I've been searching for motion matching resources for quite some time now, and I almost gave up on using it for my project due to the lack of good quality material available, especially at my experience level. Even the documentation didn't help me much when I was just starting out. Now that it's production-ready and there's a project example to study, I feel like I'll finally be able to fully understand how it works. Thank you!
Fast shader compiles is a good addition. I work all day long with in-engine shading models and its a pain having to compile all engine shaders when making minor changes. Glad this is improved in 5.4! Way to go Epic!
@@knartfocker_ I do, but after 14 years and all the updates, it's still a lot. Even catching up on changes to things I do know. That being said, the "learn only what you need" method is only good for starters. Once you become a professional you need to stay ahead of the curve. Especially when you are the technical lead on a project and have to devise all the systems in the best way possible. Learning only what you need will cause you to make many mistakes in those circumstances.
@@tehf00n its hard but on the positive side, UE5 will be here for some time and the pace of new features should slow down a bit as it will mature. Also you dont have to have expert knowledge in every area as tech lead, one person cant cover all.

It won't beat Unity until the new scenegraph system is released. See 53:25 of the "State of Unreal | GDC 2024" video. The best part of Unity is the hierarchy/inspector. Unreal is still way behind there.
@St4rdog I made and released a game using unity and it was fun to learn on, but with blueprints In unreal I can never go back to writing C# scripts and attaching them to everything
@@St4rdog Who cares ? Unity is far behind in almost every domain. I mean, their Blueprint system is above Unity's own, Animation is coming full circle to be even better than before, their Inputs are at the same level, Audio, Unreal is already better and will now far surpass it, for materials/terrain generation the new tools look great and in AI, Unreal has a builtin Behavior tree generator and now a State Tree generator. Only their navmesh is worse than Unity's but an update could improve it easily I think.
I started learning Unity about 5 years ago because it uses C# and was easier to understand than Unreal Engine’s complicated interface and C++ programming. At this point, I have a pretty good understanding of programming and game development and am able to create pretty much anything I can think of…in Unity. I want to switch to UE5 because of the graphics which, Unity does not compete at all. I tried using Blueprints, but I hate it. I am currently trying to learn UE5 with its Actors, Pawns, SceneComponents, etc. Using C++ because all of these updates that they’re doing is just unmatched to Unity and I’m jealous. 😂

Strangely enough, you are moving on the right path in the updates, I study your engine, albeit with difficulty in the English manual or databases on UA-cam from different people, but I want to note that your people who are engaged in the engine are the best both intellectually and in new chips that simplify ordinary developers of different genres of games. I hope that it will continue to be free, with the time when payment is available, I will be able to contribute my share of your work.

@@oscaride283unity also released preview for version 6 release and apparently it's gonna take minimum 6 months after the initial beta version for the lts version lol... u can't complain about unreal as they are working really hard to make awesome changes that game developers actually like and respect unlike unity who are just into their garbage ai stuff
You’ll be waiting a while… It’s generally 7-8 years between major Unreal Engine releases. UE5 only formally launched in Q2 of 2022. Unless the next version is a major departure from tradition, UE6 should land around 2030.
@@milktruckdriverYes, that's similar to what I'm thinking of but more of something officially championed by Epic is really what I'm after. this will be the norm in the near future for 3d packages and NLEs. Very surprising that we don't see this on the roadmap yet
I tested it and it is horrible. 5.4 is laggy and cant even create a huge map. It keeps saying out of video memory like back in 5.1 because its using more than it should on the video memory. 5.3 runs way better. Epic just stop trying to fix things please. Every time you do you break more stuff than you supposedly fix. I give 5.4 a 1 star out of 5. And stop trying to force fortnight on everyone. Only kids like it and verry few adults.
Fortnite is how they fund their R&D and how they test their new engine features. If you just shut your brain off any time you see Fortnite then you miss the point of Fortnite.
Like it or not Fortnite is propelling both the game and movie industry forward. Its allowed Epic to do all this work on UE5, It's allowed them to provide masses of resources to developers for free as well as fund small studios and content creators through grants. You don't care about Fortnite, but you should.

Hopefully they will at least implement it as a game mode in Fortnite Creative, seeing as it will now support First Person Perspective and a lot more customization. They tried making free UT in UE4 and nobody played it. I tried and it was sadly a ghost town, only bots. As part of Fotrnite it could at least have a chance to be rediscovered by gaming community (and it fully deserves it - UT was incredible!).
Everyone's asking for UT but you still don't understand that Epic will probably never bring it back, once a game is dead and another game blows up they have no reason to satisfy a minority that wants a dead game back... Also, they probably won't read comments that are not about the engine

I've been using Unreal since 2010 and I've struggled to keep up. I still struggle to keep up. This is a lot to learn.
