Today, the 3/4 ton truck is about obsolete. Every reason to go gas or diesel in a 3/4 ton is the same argument as just going 1/2 ton or 1 ton. Today half tons tow more then yesterdays 3/4 and even 1 tons. If you need it, go big/diesel or go half ton!
Thanks. Finally a honest opinion
In the lowest suspension height do you know how far it is from the ground to the seat cushion? I am in a wheelchair. That number would be very useful to me. Thank you for the info.
Thanks for the video. I also have a Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi. Still having troubles with understanding my numbers. A lot of the information I'm finding is vague and unclear or basically one person's opinion over another. Out of curiosity what are you numbers?
Just bought a 24 Tradesman 6.7 Cummins getting 19-20 mpg. That’s non towing, even got about 10mpg towing 20k as Ive got a massive 20 foot Kaufman dump trailer and the Cummins puts in work very nicely. The exhaust brake feature makes stopping those loads a breeze instead of pounding the brakes to slow down. Both are great options but towing near limit weights get the Cummins. Trust me.
Hard to take advice from someone about driving...while you're filming a video..nice that you get to decide what rules you will and won't follow..

@@divinobambino you've got this my friend!
have a 2018 chevy 2500 and a 2014 ram 2500 and ram outshines the chevy in power pulling 10k lb trailer. the chevy outshines ram in comfort. I drove my ram pulling trailer to the ozarks with ease and never ever had to floor it to maintain speed. The chevy struggled a bit with same pull but still didnt have to floor it to maintain speed. I averaged 9 mpg on both trucks heading up to ozarks. I drive with the rigs when towing using same driving techniques they use to improve fuel economy like slow cruising through the little towns so as to not hit the lights red if possible. Not sure how steep the angle u were at but mine was a steady climb hours at a time. As far as sway goes i run with rigs and rarely have that issue even with a lifted truck with AT tires. 6.4 hemi is a beast. Try pulling the rotors to have them, turned at a parts store. They are monsters and weigh quite a bit. My son says my ram is the truck version of my C7 with the power it makes. Hard not to agree.
I was told a diesel is more expensive than a boat and Harley combined on maintenance
@dogdroper it's definitely expensive. How much more depends on each individual scenario imagine. It is definitely more expensive than gas
What’s def? I have a 5th gen but the def gauge shows full all the time and has never done a regen must be a miracle. Or that sweet 5in straight pipe idk
I have the same camper and was thinking about doing this. Did it help much?
@mattwhite5669 it definitely did. Well worth it and it wasn't hard nor did it take too long
I’m curious as to what trailer hitch you’re using. I just bought a bulletproof trailer hitch
Do you need to use the tow haul mode? or does it operate better without?
@jordankovacs162 I always use tow haul mode when towing. It helps control the shifting and helps to save the transmission
unless it's a one ton truck it don't need a diesel engine period and if it doesn't have an eight foot bed why buy it? It's just a car maskerading as a truck..
Im watching this 3 years later, and so much of this applies to ALL drivers. Staying in the right, dont clog up the left lanes, and driving "speed limit" making you a hazard. Well said and too much pride gets put into driving, just be respectful and if youre not in a hurry dont just hit the left lane and put your cruise control on, passing on left is a forgotten rule of the road. Its much more dangerous for 20 cars to jump over to the right and back over to the left than for one car to just get over one lane.
Good information. 👍
Durham NC here.. Great Vid!
@backyrdbully3276 what's up neighbor! Thanks!
You are too concerned about oncoming and offcoming traffic. If you are in the right lane, you are not obligated (legally) to get out of the way (or make holes for) of oncoming traffic. They have two pedals and can pick the hole in front of me or the one behind. It is their job to merge into existing traffic. It is not your fault that they cannot turn their head and execute a plan.
I have a ram 2017 1500 4x4 truck and the trailer I’m looking at is 33foot trailer that’s dry weight is 8960, my towing capacity is 10,640. Is the trailer too long for me to tow? What’re y’all thoughts??
I agree with some of what you said but in other ways I disagree. If you're an average truck owner maybe you tow/haul occasionally get a half ton. A carefully optioned out one will have comparable towing/hauling numbers that of a 3/4 ton(gas or diesel). the 3/4 trucks are slowly losing a place in the market as half tons are improving and 1 tons still providing the best capability of both. Ram 2500 6.4 hemi payload(3690) Max trailer(15,220) Ford F -150 5.0 V8 payload(3315) Max trailer(13,000) Ram 3500 6.7 Cummins payload(6120) Max trailer(34,650) Now those numbers I pulled straight from the manufacture charts, now keep in mind it depends on how you option them out but those are examples of why half tons are for everyday people. But for me I'd taking the 4th gen 3500 srw 6.7 deleted cummins everyday it's my "Do it all and then some" truck but that's just me not that I recommend everyone do that.
Have a 3500DRW as my daily drive, hurts like hell to fill, but I do own the roadways.
Did you leave it on tow haul mode going uphilll? I am towing for the first time up a mountain. I am not sure if I should just leave it on town haul mode or use my gears. I have a 21 Ram 1500 5.7 liter. Pulling 24ft trailer 4000lbs
@fernandob104 I recommend to use tow haul mode whenever you tow the trailer. You can always lock out your gears when going down hill if the grade is too steep. Tow haul will regulate the transmission for you.
Try pulling a 12000 lb trailer through the passes in Colorado and you'll understand why we use diesels.
@crashdsnowman1 did it this summer. Diesel will naturally be better but the gas did just fine. Second time doing it with this truck with two different trailers
@@liveyourfree I use to go through 3 passes twice every day for 2 years. Gas trucks about 35mph at the top, diesel 70 if you can keep it in the lane. Interstate passes are easy, Hoosier, Wolf Creek a little tougher.
@crashdsnowman1 at the rate you had to do it, absolutely a diesel. That makes sense. I topped out between 40 and 45. Then ended up getting stuck in a major traffic accident on the vail pass
The only problem I have with the "5th Gen" Ram HDs (aside from 4th Gen crew cab) is the small 31 gal standard fuel tank.
@@M_dot202 I agree with this statement!!!!!
I just bought the 2025 reflection, same model. I am a professional truck driver, owner operator with almost 2 million miles logged. Unfortunately, I have the 5.7 hemi half ton, and after doing a deep dive, I realize the half ton on this rig is pushing it even for an experienced hauler. With the 3.92 axle ratio, you can legally haul this unit and have room for people and gear, but that doesn't mean it will feel right. Most importantly, I never push weights when hauling. Wind is massive, especially when you haul oversized like I do. It's time to call my dealer.
@@Woadyn Congrats on the new trailer! I agree and appreciate your wisdom for safety
Full gas towing experience - RPM - 1:37, second gear up grades. Wound out. "Wouldn't go faster if I could." Bonus downshift at 2:13 because it couldn't hold 3rd. Diesel price - 1:29, smug about "savings" after maneuvering a trailer in the gas lanes, but didn't bother to check fleet card discount price. (Loves is notorious for high sign price vs fleet card price.) Ride - 1:06, "This is going to be a good smooth ride." 3:15 to 3:30, good shot of hood bouncing as truck porpoises down the road. Typical camping world blue ox setup. MPG - 4:02 - 8.2 mpg. Even 11 mpg in a diesel rig would be 34% better. Even the loves sign prices were only 28% different. Engine brake - 5:50 - there is no engine brake. Engine braking.
I drive a cab over box truck for work/business. Had a brand new diesel, as soon as the emissions warranty ended at 50k miles it was in the shop every 6 months for something emission related. $1k+ a pop, plus a week wait so get a rental, and had to be towed a couple times (limp mode). Last straw was a $2,500 repair quote for another emissions issue, walked from service to sales and worked out a trade deal on a new gas cab over box truck. It has a 6.0 LS engine, Allison 6AT (5 year unlimited mile warranty on the tranny). Plenty of power for a 18k GVWR box truck, pulls/accelerates good when loaded, cruises at 70 all day long (will drop to 5th gear to pull hills at 70 mph). Diesel got 10 mpg, gas gets 7 mpg. Even without the additional repair costs, with diesel being 60-80 cents more per gallon, and more expensive maintenance, just isn’t worth it for my situation. Then all those extra emissions repairs made it a seriously losing proposition. Local delivery, 20k miles a year. Ford evens offers the Godzilla in their 26 ft, 26k GVWR box trucks. Shows that there is a market for gas instead of diesel even at that size, especially if you’re local delivery. No need for diesel if you aren’t hauling extremely heavy loads, or driving over the road mileage every year - the math just doesn’t math.
@shannoncrawford7212 greatly put!
I wish there were more drivers like you on the highways.Great advice and video!!!!!
@@NOOCH5710 thank you!
I tow a 27 foot with a ford f150, no problems but I don't speed and like you stated know how to drive down hills. Everyone talks about tow rating, payload capacity, etc. And being within those numbers but no one talks about the most important number of all, staying within the speed limil.
@@frankzicari784 couldn't agree more
A big gas engine is perfect for a 3/4-ton truck. If you need the power of a diesel engine, then you need a one-ton truck or larger. You can even put the biggest gas engine in a one-ton truck for more payload.
@@Myfriendvinny golden advice. I agree 100%
great information... thank you
@MaineOutdoorsChannel thank you my friend
You fill with regular or premium fuel?
@@farhenheit628of1200 mid grade 89
With my truck the difference between the lowest octane rating and mid grade is the difference between 11 miles per gallon and 18 to 20 miles per gallon
Other experiences a lot with my 2017 6.4 hemi it's your octane if you use the lower octane to get horrible gas mileage and horrible power if you use the mid grade you'll get excellent gas mileage almost double what you will on the low octane and much better power and if you go with the highest octane rating it actually starts to fall off again
@trinidyjohnson9295 agreed. I use the 89 octane and will only use higher if 89 is not available
Wanted to ask how to floor mats are holding up? Also do feel like you needed to primer Aqua marine seals for this application?
@stevenl6995 so far so good! I didn't get to use it that much this summer. Yes, I think the prime helped
You helped me alot with the half ton in the mountains and I for one appreciate it. I hope others do as well.
@jamesjones2985 I appreciate your consent and am really glad it helps!
As somone who is looking for a newer 2500. Im stuck between the gas and diesel. ive always wanted a diesel as a fanboy. you know roll coal and what not but the def and emissions make me wonder if I shoukd say screw the dream and get a gasser
@@jordankovacs162 I get it! My suggestion is to weigh the options for how you will use it the most and pull the trigger in what makes the most practical sense to you. Let us know what you do!
@liveyourfree I dont haul a lot at the time but my goal is to eventually buy a camper and a dump trailer to start a side hustle
@jordankovacs162 makes sense. To me it sounds like a gas would work for you since you're not hauling often and when you do, it will be a side hustle. I guess it depends on how heavy and how often your side hustle would have you hauling. Either way, I respect the vision you have for the side hustle!
I have towed trailers of this size with both 1500 and 2500 pickup trucks. To say that a 2500 tows better is false, a truck doesn't tow better its the driver and knowing what to do and how to drive. Sway doesn't magically disappear with a 2500, slowing down will decrease sway.
@frankzicari784 thanks for your comment!
I''m new to owning a 6.4 HEMI and watned to know if you let your truck warm up upon start up? I know its not a diesel but 5 minutes or until not cold? Thanks
@connorrowe2667 I normally let it warm up for a couple minutes in the summer and until it's warm in the winter. I don't let it idle too long though
I tow about 9K with a less than 900 lb tongue weight loaded. Oh, I love that Hemi Growl. But, I know I have 3,000 lbs payload and 15,000 max tow. Your WELL within your limits. I love my Hemi 2500. Wish I had the new mirrors, but other than that, I love it. I always have been used to having to watch what I put in the bed of the truck with 1500's and after market airbags even thought within specs. Now days? I load it up, generator whatever, no problem. Oh, I live in MT at 4500 feet and everywhere I go is up up and down... My mileage is essentially equal to the 1500's towing maybe a tweak less but not much at all in the low tenths of a mpg. That actually surprised me. Yep the 1500's are noticably better not towing but, hey you bought a truck to tow safely not be a fuel sipper and I like sitting up high with all that steel between me and reality. Sorry if that offends anyone. AND, no Diesel logistics to deal with. The 2500 is pretty much relegated to towing and some light off road trips and appliance hauling, big stuff and transfer station for big loads. Comfort is fantastic as I have a Laramie with the heated seats, cooled seats etc. And I do NOT like the big screen so was happy to find one...of the last Laramies...with the 8.4 screen. I do dislike UConnect 5 as I was one of the first with that. I much preferred the intuitive fewer choices UConnect 4..that also has the weather, and other things that are totally screwed on the UConnect 5. And frankly I don't need 400 pre-programmed stations. BUT, I do like the off road screens with the summarized engine guages so you can drive AND keep an eye on things. The only things I wish I had was the blind spot monitoring and the new mirrors. The new mirrors are very nice. My last 1500 had all the safety stuff and I have no problem giving most of it a pass on the 2500 particularly at the prices then. That is it. I do have the front and back parking sensors and on this beast I'm glad for that. And it is a beast not the best for daily driving. I ended up getting a Jeep Gladiator at 30% off MSRP for the daily driving and love that too so even less of a load now days on the Truck. Did I say it is really a beast and parking lots were really NOT made for them all things considered.
I found people think they want to drive like they do when they arent pulling a trailer. Slow down and enjoy the drive people!
Seems like the biggest reason this gas and diesel truck debate has more to do with men not knowing how to turn wrenches and paying big dollars for others to fix them. Men are supposed to know how to fix things you cant learn by being a lazy turd. By the way i own a 06 Chevy Duramax LBZ completely deleted. I love the truck, every issue i have fixed myself saving $10ks of Benjamins. Stop buying over priced trucks, its insane how many of you are ok with a $1300 a month payment.
I have a 2023 ram 1500 limited with the towing package and I’m now looking into buying a camper. Never pulled anything in my life so any advice would help! I’m looking at a 29ft camper that is around 5600lb(keystone 24rpr) I will only be pulling it to the beach(3 hour drive) and the foot hills( 2 hour drive). Is this something safe to pull?
@kennethplaster6766 make sure it is within your numbers. If it is and you are comfortable being able to control it (including stopping it) and are willing to take it slow then I'd say go for it
Diesels are a headache that should be avoided if possible.
Exactly, that's why I have the 2022 Chevy Custom 2500, 6 speed only but next year I'll get the 10 speed but with the 3500 for more payload with the 6.6 Gasser.😁
That is what I have been waiting for ( around 20 mph unloaded ).
If you look at the rating charts for the Ram 3500s over, say the past ten years, you'll notice they bump GVWR for options that add weight: 4x4, mega cab, diesel, etc. So yes, when you buy an administratively limited, derated, and handicapped GVWR truck (a 2500 that is limited at 10,000) and they are already at the 10k limit and can't at gvwr to compensate, then yes, the payload "rating" is going to be limited. Which is why for personal use (where the rating doesn't matter) you should buy the 3500. For commercial use where DOT 10k rating matters, the 2500 makes sense. If you don't understand this, you don't understand why the 2500-10k truck exists, and your criticism is irrelevant. At the 8:00 mark you double down - "there's no reason for the diesel truck." Yet in the background we hear the 6.4 downshifting again, and again, and again.
@johnneil6653 you ALMOST had a valid point if I didn't already very clearly express how and who is using the truck makes diesels make sense or not make sense. I have done hotshot as well so all of that was considered and understood. Always be sure to consider the full video before spending so much time to debunk something that was already clarified. Your response is actually irrelevant because of your lack of consideration of the full video.
@@liveyourfree You're right. I didn't hear it over the downshifting. People ranting about irrelevancy of 3/4 ton diesels because of payload? Sorry, can't hear you in my one ton that cost the same.
@johnneil6653 😂 love it! Doesn't help with the irrelevantcy of your comment but I love the attempt!
@@liveyourfree It's like someone saying that size 12 shoes are irrelevant because they're too small. But yet, there was a size 13 right next to it on the shelf. It's not Nike's fault you picked the wrong size and it then faulted the shoe based on...its size. If payload is what you need, shop by payload and not by, "well, I gotta have me some 2500, so how do I equip a 2500 to have me the payloads I be needin." 3500 is arbitrarily more cost and...has the payload...even with the weight adder options. So you're missing the point. The payload rating isn't a function of it being a 2500 diesel. It's a function of Ram's choice to cap the 2500 gvwr at 10k. (GM and Ford allow >10k GVWRs on their 2500 models.) There are solid arguments for that cap in commercial space. So your argument is really based on an arbitrary model distinctions. It's the same dead horse rant the 1/2 ton HDPP/HDTP fanboys go on against 3/4 ton diesels without acknowledging that they've got their heads in the sand.
@johnneil6653 That analogy has no relevant comparison at all 😂. Kid, what are you even talking about?? You are really triggered by this video and its clear you haven't processed all the information that was stated in the video. I even covered this in other videos where I stated, "if I was to get a diesel it would be because I needed it and it would be in a 1 ton." Again, irrelevant reply on your end further proving my point. Remember my friend, you shouldn't put the value of your identity in your truck. I do appreciate your comments as they are great for the algorithm. Just don't get yourself too upset over it 😉.
I want to say a BIG thank you ALL this valuable information. I do have a 2018 Ram 1/2 ton. I have had HD air bags installed. What else can i do for a sured up ride? Any information on said equipment would be greatly appreciated.💯👍. Great video HANDS DOWN!
2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD LBZ Duramax. No DEF fluid. 450,000 miles. 21 mpg. Still running like a champ. When diesel went up near $4/gal. I switched to B100 biodiesel at $2/gal.
Have you noticed and performance difference in power or efficiency with the biodiesel?
@Jordan-ql6tm yes. Throttle not as responsive. Valvetrain noise almost non-existent. Ran smooth as glass. Had to replace the fuel filter once because it cleans out your system. I loved it.
@@segarza appreciate that info brother, glad you're happy with it man. So all positive things aside from a deduced throttle response as the only real negative?
@Jordan-ql6tm yep. That's running at 100% biodiesel. At 40%, or B40, I couldn't tell the difference in performance. I lived in South Texas when I ran B100, so weather was never a problem. Up north, low temps could be a concern.
