  • This is so wicked one of the trumpet players can't contain himself. There's other BR videos where one of the trumpet players is amazed by Buddy's soloing. Some of these younger guys in the band must be thinking over and over, "Holy Sh**!!! I'm in Buddy Rich's Band. Of course they've earned their spot in the band.

I'm a lifelong fan of Buddy, and yes, he was always amazing. And yes, players in the band were relentlessly impressed with his playing. But... I think if you study Buddy's history, you'll find that the reason that the trumpet player in this video, and indeed, Buddy himself were smirking here is that Buddy often made fun of this particular rock-type fill, and did it on those occasions (like this one) where the audience was filled with young people who he knew would be "impressed". Although he played it as well or better than anyone, it was "just a gag" to Buddy.

+Mike James Maybe, maybe not. From what I see the blond trumpet player really started smiling big when Buddy started doing the cross sticking. I've never seen anybody do the cross sticking as fast as Buddy was there. Buddy mocked the triplets the rock drummers do for fills. Just my take, I could be wrong.

+rbogan9199 No argument from me here, because it's certainly true that none of us really know what Buddy or anyone in his band anyone was thinking. But, having followed him around since the 1960s, and having seen most of the videos available of Buddy playing, he would nearly always show that little smirk when he played that pattern... usually to the bass player. And, if you're a drummer, you know that this pattern is one of the easiest to do without a lot of effort... which is why so many young drummers have used it so much. If it's relatively easy for us, that probably means that Buddy could do it in his sleep. Paraphrasing Buddy's many comments on this sort of thing, "I go bang, bang, boom, boom, and then get back to the serious stuff."
Cathy Rich has allowed me to post a variety of previously-unpublished live concert recordings of Buddy, made by people like me, who sat in front of the band and recorded it. These are all free to listen to of course, and are at www.mikejamesjazz.com/br_clips.html - Enjoy!
