He doesn't have to roar or drop bombs to make a statement. There is a time and place for everything in drumming. If you play ear splitting loud and louder you can loose your audience and your hearing. Buddy could drum you a story playing so soft and audible. He can punch drive like a cruise muscle when he wanted to. He had that ability to do it all and then some
