Louis Armstrong - Go Down Moses (Lyrics)
There'll never be someone like Louis Armstrong again.
🙏🎼❤ I agree!
One of my good friends Neil Curtis!
A Story about a Musician and Singer :
A grandson of slaves, a boy was born in a poor neighborhood of New Orleans known as the 'Back of Town'. His father abandoned the family when the child was an infant. His mother became a prostitute and the boy and his sister had to live with their grandmother.
Early in life he proved to be gifted for music and, with three other kids, he sang in the streets of New Orleans.
His first gains were the coins that were thrown to them.
A Jewish family, Karnofsky, who had immigrated from Lithuania to the USA had pity for the 7-year-old boy and brought him into their home. They initially gave him 'work' in the house, to feed this hungry child. There he remained and slept in this Jewish family's home where, for the first time in his life he was treated with kindness and tenderness.
When he went to bed, Mrs. Karnovsky sang him a Russian Lullaby that he would sing with her. Later, he learned to sing and play several Russian and Jewish songs. Over time, this boy became the adopted son of this family. The Karnofskys gave him money to buy his first musical instrument, as was the custom in the Jewish families. They sincerely admired his musical talent. Later, when he became a professional musician and composer, he used these Jewish melodies in compositions, such as 'St. James Infirmary' and 'Go Down Moses'. The little black boy grew up and wrote a book about this Jewish family who had adopted him in 1907. In memory of this family and until the end of his life, he wore a star of David and said that in this family he had learned "how to live a real life and determination." You might recognize his name. This little boy was called Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong. Louis Armstrong proudly spoke fluent Yiddish!
And I bet you didn't know any of this.... And 'Satchmo' is Yiddish for 'Big Cheeks."
What an amazing story, thank you for telling it. I had heard that Louis Armstrong had been homeless for a time as a child, but I never heard about the Jewish family who adopted him. Beautiful story of human compassion and love.❤
I've heard this song many times before, but the connection between the enslavement of the Israelites in Egypt and Africans in America just clicked for me. It's no wonder that this song was and still is so important to the African American community
@@esther3479 You're delusional. Black people are not, nor have they ever been Jews. Jews are Jews, and black people are black people. Your historical revisionism is absurd and no one takes it seriously.

Louis Armstrong was such a wonderful singer!!! His singing is beautiful, esp. singing spirituals.

One of Louis Armstrong's most potent songs!
No one knows until the family gave him the money to buy an instrument as their custom and the little boy found his true calling. What a great true story of a humble kid and became a master of music, Louis Armstrong.
Thank you for sharing his legacy. Praise the Lord. Hallelujah! Amen😇🤍🙏
I think about my ancestors and I think about the world now and this song brings me to tears
Me too, princess! All Praises to the Most High!!!

Amayah Battiste But you gotta admit. My religion is just as bs as Christianity but it's more fun! :D
We sang this in Hebrew school last Sunday and it’s stuck in my head 💕
Louis Armstrong wore the Star of David for most of his life, as a Jewish family had helped him and had given him his first musical instrument.
nice to know!
No, because he knew he was a Hebrew….!!!….. go down Moses was a censored song amongst the slaves on plantations according to slave autobiographies….Caucasian plantation owners, and slave owners did not like them, singing this song ….. the conditions of the Negro directly links to the curses and conditions of the Hebrews in Egypt……… not surprising white people didn’t like them singing it

First sang that song in third grade catholic school. This is my favorite rendition of my favorite gospel song. Thank you Sister!!
got assigned this song for cello lessons. Was told to UA-cam it, and wow I am not disappointed. This is such a beautiful and meaningful song
If there's going to be a "black national anthem," this should be it. Not just the song itself, but this priceless recording by the matchless Satchmo.
The current national anthem is pretty black since we were at that battle on that perilous night. And we did do a good bit of fighting I might add to see that flag remain. 😉
la musique de l’âme . elle pénètre lancinante dans l'entre de l'univers a travers les méandres même de mon humanité. gloire soit rendu à DIEU
c' est une musique qui parle de l'esclavage non ?
et plus précisément de la libération de l'esclavage. @@delphinelebourhis8456
I dont think its only religion theme music, its historic. Anyway the pleasure is reaching the highest level. Love the music.
This kind of songs is called spirituals , we've learned about this on a music school in Greece. Spirituals are songs used by black slaves in America back in the 19th century and every lyric of them has a secret meaning. Through these songs slaves were capable of making escape plans as every word symbolises what information had to follow so as to reach North America - where black people were free - by swimming across the Mississippi River and be finally lead to freedom. Slaves weren't able to clearly make their plans so they used spirituals not only for entertainment but mostly for describing their plans to the other slaves. Especially in that song Moses symolises the white men that would lead them to the river and offer them intructions till the end of their journey , Pharaoh symbolises the guards , people the slaves and Egypt land South America , the regions tht slaves were captured . There are loads of songs like this Sush as ''Wade in the water'' , ''Swing low sweer chariot '' and others , and it is true that slaves back then ignoring their importance to our new society , offered us a great masterpiece not only for history but also for music !!!!!! Respect
I was thinking exactly the same. Thank you very much.
Yeah! Another name is Gospel
In reallity its called " nigga spiritual "
Thanks Bruv
Thus said the Lord, bold Moses sais, Let my people go, If Not !'LL Smite Your First Born Daed. Let My People Go; And so since Columbine, white youth have been met with devine judgement. The defiant ones refusal to see this as such and seek redemption. This means such acts will contiue! until they humble themsevles and repent for their centruries of racism!
what could the U.S. be without African American community?

THIS SONG IS WONDERFUL AND IT BLESS THE NAME OF JESUS
This has literally nothing to do with Jesus. But I agree song is great.
@Samvel Hasan-Jalalyan Song is literally about Moses and Old testament story of Exodus of Jews from Egypt. It was approximatelly 1300 years before Jesus.
@Samvel Hasan-Jalalyan You are quite dense or really latent Christian as thanks to your last reply I am sure you know nothing about Bible except the name of the book and that it also contains person of Jesus Christ.
@Samvel Hasan-Jalalyan You're really thinking christians wrote the old testament????
@Samvel Hasan-Jalalyan Even so, no part of the story he mentions was written by those who would call themselves Christian's, they didn't even exist. Especially since this is a foundational story about the formation of the Jewish people, who preceded Chrisrians by a while

Ok, for yall saying religious things, remember that this song isn't actually about religion. Its about the escape of slaves. Slaves would use it to communicate by singing this, letting those hearing the song that it was time to escape the Slave house/plantations.
In the song:
Moses= Harriet tubman (she was referred to using the code name moses)
Pharoah= the white man.
Egypt= the plantation
I'm pretty sure the slave master would understand "let my people go" isnt exactly a coded message

I feel my people in these songs. Our struggles together will be able to rise against our suppressor Zemar.
To all those under the reign of Master Martin, hear this song!
it gives me the chills now i know about the origins and what it meant. A lot of bad deeds go unpunished
Yes, u r right, Fatima. A typical example of nazi exploitation by the imperialist French government has been goin' on in the former African colonies for several centuries. Francophone Africa is still economically ripped off by France, with the complicity of African heads of state, who are controlled and threatened by the french government. The international community is either unaware of this unacceptable situation or just does not care. Francophone Africa, just like back in the 15 thru the 19th centuries, is not free. Let us all tell the french to set francophone Africa free. Just like france was liberated by the Allied Forces from Nazi Germany in 1945.
it won't go unpunished forever dear Fatima and Muhammadu. God sees all, we answer to Him and He will judge and give true justice.
Louis Armstrong was adopted, and brought up by a Jewish family. The mother sang him Jewish lullabies. This is about the enslavement of the Jews by the Egyptians.
