I own a Large Munsterlander and an Irish Setter. Actually this very movie clip above gave us the idea for the Munsterlander. On a scale up to 20 the Irish Setter sheds on 1 and the Munsterlander on 20. It is impossible not to vacuum every day and to not brush him every day (outside). I think the shedding is off the scale. Which I don't really mind, just saying.
We got him from a longtime breeder when he was already 17 weeks old and he was anxious, sensitive and aloof with everyone and everything who isn't immediate family. We socialised him well (same with all our other dogs) but we never got to a satisfactory point. At 9 months he started to get very reactive on walks, even redirected onto us. We now walk him with a muzzle. We are with our fifth dog trainer who is a genius and it has gotten a lot better. However I don't think he will ever become a dog who's okay with visitors (without the dog wearing a muzzle and a thorough introduction to the guest) or walk right next to another dog or human. We could never just take him to an outside cafe with us. We love him dearly and he has many wonderful qualities but he is hard work and a burden sometimes.

I had one growing up, his name was Smoke. He was by far the best family dog we had. He often go quail hunting with my father and then chill with us on the couch. He was the quirkiest dog when playing hide and go seek. He would look at the ceiling before finding me behind a door. Loved him so much.

I have owned a large munster now for 3 years. Previously I owned 2 working spaniels and before that a black lab/German Shepard cross.
I have nothing but praise for this breed of dog. They are loyal and extremely well tempered, (i.e. great with kids, adults, dogs alike and even the dreaded vets) and are absolutely family orientated and love attention and petting.
As an outdoors person. This is possibly the most suited dog I have owned to hill walking and exploration and extended periods of wild camping. He is adventurous, capable and well adapted to cold and wet environments.
Indoors, his nature, is placid and almost comes across as boring at times but outdoors is where this breed truely comes into its own.
He does tend to range MUCH further than any other breed I have owned, which is expected of the large munster and can be disconcerting to new Munster owners and his recall is not the best, however, he was an older rescue when we got him. Which could attribute to his lack of recall.
He is extremely loyal by nature (not necessarily training) and fortunately he always returns. Unfortunately it is when he sees fit.
In my experience this breed can be somewhat vocal, highly independent/stubborn and very instinctual ( although, this could be attributed, again, to him being an older rescue from a working farm)
This is most definatley a breed that needs plenty of both physical/mental stimulation (at least 1.5hours or 2 large walks a day) and a moderate level of weekly grooming.
Small apartment/working family owners may not be suitable for this breed (very similar to German pointers i.e. very active) but people who can give the large Munster the time, perseverance and are understanding to the breeds inbuilt instincts will be blessed with one of the most family friendly, loyal, adventurous and well tempered dogs I have ever had the pleasure of living with.
I am not in any way a dog trainer or specialist. These are just my experiences with this breeds of dog and any future, "RESPONSIBLE", dog owners should do their own research into different breeds and which is most suited to them and their situation
P.s. they also love to chase

My first dog. I did lots of research, and found him. He was a gorgeous loving boy. Unfortunately he did suffer from fits and he died of cancer age 6. I do miss him!

I currently have 3 dogs so I'm not in the position financially for a new one, but how I would absolutely love a Large Munsterlander. It will eventually be a breed I own, but from the research I've done it will be hard enough to come across a reputable breeder. They seem very rare indeed.

Someone told me my dog looks like a Munsterlander. His coloring looks closer Freya's and the texture and how the coat flows(?) looks similar as well!

These look like lovely pets although if "I" was looking for a pet I'd prefer something with a lower maintenance coat. I commend you on this very informative video. I also commend you there for retaining the breed's working ability rather than splitting them into pet and working. That said, this remains the responsibility of the breeder NOT the UKC, etc. MANY dogs of various working breeds are sold simply for profit to non-working homes. Subsequently blaming the new owner for not working a "working breed" remains the fault of the seller/breeder. These appear to be adequate for working in Britain/Europe. They are virtually useless here in America where-by typical habitat is expansive and the wild species are very skittish. As such, slow methodical dogs - regardless of breed - are not productive. In order to provide birds for the gun, pointing dogs MUST have tons of pace and an exceptional nose to keep up with said pace. I do see many dogs here - again of various breeds - that resemble the large Munsterlander's performance but I have coined them as being plushers or flointers. They are reasonably effective on game farms or hunt clubs where pen-raised birds are released. They find game birds but they work more like a flusher because they have poor pointing habits/training. If they worked as pointer should do, their methodical pace would inevitably bump birds (too far for the gun) hence, "flointers/plushers". I see them working marginally too far compared to a flusher and FAR too close/slow to point wild species. Thank you for this informative video!

That's very informative, thank you! Hard to find info on their hunting abilities out there. For North American birds, what would your breed recommendation be instead? I want a dog capable of both upland and water retrievals which is why I was first drawn to this breed. I had labs before and loved them but want to try out a new breed for a change. Have owned a Brittany before too, but she had absolutely no natural retrieving instinct which was a bummer (and only tolerated the water... and a little too hyper to sit still lol)
