I hope that we can keep on protecting Groenendaels and Tervurens; I would hate to see them being overbred like the German shepherd and Malinois. They are way to gorgeous and adorable to end up in shelters.
PLEASE do an all about living with the Belgian sheepdog! I know they’re technically the same breed as the Malinois but after talking to a few Groenendael owners I’ve learned that the 4 Belgian Shepherd types are a bit different in temperament and energy level, etc
I recently adopted a five yr male and 3yr female (both AKC registered, rescued from a horrifffic dangerous hoarding situation.) and I would say they are very different. So much more chill. They do not snap. I am going to meet the other 17 that were locked in this house, but I hear they are also so far scared but sweet. So for a situation where they were living in scarcity and against eachother they are unbelievably docile. Different than mals. But I hear long haired German shepherds are usually more laid back than short hairs. They are so beautiful, and sensitive. Better for herding and work than protection I would say (especially their frame).
Had a Groenendal for more than 13 years. She was the best dog ! I feel much love when I watch the Dogs in the Video. I really miss her. She travelled whith me and my son through Europe, always protective and by our side. We had much Fun going by Bike. She did run at the Trottoir me in the street and she just looked if I still agree. We had telepathic connection.
What a wonderful and beautiful breed. I could listen to Peggy all day long. Her love of , and her deep knowledge of these dogs is simply amazing and infectious. I wish you rainbows Peggy.
I grew up in the 1970's and we got a 1 year old female Belgiun Groenendael Sheepdog we called Renee. Renee was the best dog I ever owned. Smart, loved people, an amazing guard dog. I highly recommend them, They have a great nature and their fur does not smell. They only shed a tiny bit and are remarkably clean dogs. The biggest mistake we made with Renee was not giving her stuff to do...training her to fetch, jump around and through stuff, and tricks was what these dogs love. As a result Renee put on weight and died at only age 12.
I've just adopted a Belgian shepherd Groenendael that was rescued from Spain. She was terribly sick with heart worm, but now she's healthy and the sweetest dog I've ever owned. She's by my side constantly, and responds to training like a star student. Unfortunately she hates other dogs, so our numerous daily walks are off the beaten track, which she loves.
I had a Belgian that lived to 17. My husband uses a wheelchair and he was quite perfect as a companion for us. They are lovely dogs and fairly hard to find.
I've chosen to dedicate my life to this breed. Currently on waiting list for my second groenendael. I have to say that you chose a very good owner represent the breed, I agree with every word.
I had a gray groenendael. Best dog I have ever had. She died of cancer a week ago, but she was loyal and playful until the day she died. Everyone should experience this dog once in their life. They are so loving, will follow you everywhere, wants to be by your side all the time. The way she described the breed was good :) So energetic but can also be calm, but the second something happens they are up and going in a second! They are also kind with children. I would recommend a groenendael or a tervueren if you want a companion dog.
Do ypu know if they would be good on trails with horses? I want a dog that can walk along with us on rides. I worry that he/she would overheat. I would also take the dog to work daily so i need an animal that would be calm with older adults.
@@0316asdfjkl They fit the description. My terv is really calm inside and blow off steam once he gets to play outside. If you prefer a short haired sheperd dog anyway (still with a calm temper), the smooth collie might be for you. You’ll have to socialize your Belgian shepherd A LOT though, cause some can be skittish

Peggy was a good choice for knowledge on this breed. And I appreciate her honesty in the limitations on the stock they can handle. They simply aren't the popular choice for people breeding for everyman working dogs to handle harder stock. Curs, border collies, kelpies, and others are being bred more commonly for harder temperaments to move tough cattle and even harder rams. Most people who try any tending style herding with these guys, are hobbyists or very small boutique farmers. Groenies in the USA at least, are mostly found in the show set and the temperament has been softened to a large degree. Look out for very spooky dogs. It's far too common. There ARE people dedicated to reviving harder working ability in this type, so that it's not just the malinois doing well. Peggy's website has some links to get folks started. A GOOD Belgian with a solid temperament can be a real treasure.
can agree regarding cattle, but I've yet to see a ram back down any of my dogs. As for tending, used to do this regularly with my Nyjel to save buying hay. they just weren't bred for low heel and aren't "range cattle" dogs. OTOH, not too many kelpies, BCs etc that will herd your sheep and deal summarily with anyone trying to steal them or mug you.
Very true. BCs and kelpies are supposed to be bred to be very human friendly. I've heard of the odd kelpie defending it's owner, but it's not the norm or the intention behind that breed. Belgians are more multi purpose while BCs and kelpies are specialists.

What about the Schipperke ? The Groenendael and Schipperke both originated from the Leuvenaar, a now extinct 40-pound dog often found in the Louvain region of Belgium and employed to guard flocks and transport. It is said that the Leuvenaar was bread larger to create the Gronendael and smaller to create the Schipperke.
Frida In my experience Groenendaels tend to be far more mellow than Malinois. Mals are intense dogs and have very strong working drives; they’re always “on”. Groenendaels are smart and need to be exercised, but they’re a bit easier to get to chill out.
Beautiful dog... I know that the Malinois is more inclined for home protection but wondered if the belgian sheep dog could also work as a home protection dog?
They’re smart enough, and willing to serve but they aren’t as inclined to aggression and are fairly lightweight they’re bite wouldn’t be desirable for home protection
They are fine with the cold but they want to be with you always wherever you go. We live in the pacific northwest and get up to 7 feet of snow and our dogs love it!
Does anyone know if they can adapt to other dogs in the house/garden? (2 dachshunds, seniors) + 1 little adopted dog. We want to welcome a dog like this to our home, but there is very little info in my country. Kind regards (:
I would love to have one of these dogs if possible when I am able to learn to look after dogs along with other animals as pets. They remind me of Sirius Black from Harry potter when he was in his animagus form.
You should do a video on Ca de Bou. If you can find one. I've lived with one for almost eight years now, the first puppy I raised myself, and there are about 50 of them here in Sweden but not many more (possibly fewer) in the United States. Also Chow Chow. They are really good guard dogs, and seem underrated and misrepresented, thought of as a "mean" dog just meant for show.
it's possible you can have a good dog to go along with a horse but I don't think it's highly probable without a lot of effort. socialization is probably going to be the most important thing here and having a dog that's open to new experiences and well-tempered. Best wishes, I sure love my dog!
@@wholesome122 Totally not they are very different. Groenendaels are real family pets and they can be highly energetic but cuddle bears indoor, while Malinois don't have an off switch. Even inside they love to be buzy. If they get bored they tear your house down. A Groenendael or Tervuren would never do that.
I feel her, a lot of schutzhund clubs don't want anything other then german shepherds and mals involved. Even if you just wanna hobby at their club they just don't want any other breed near their club.
Most people don't even see the difference between a Tervuren and a German shepherd. A lot think that the Groenendael is a black German shepherd. My neighbors thought they had a German shepherd and it was a Tervuren. All these dogs including the Dutch shepherd all come from the same ancestors. They are basically the same. High energy, highly intelligent, needs lots of training, playtime mental stimulation.

Frida In my experience Groenendaels tend to be far more mellow than Malinois. Mals are intense dogs and have very strong working drives; they’re always “on”. Groenendaels are smart and need to be exercised, but they’re a bit easier to get to chill out.
Huge difference. Malinous are bred for high intensity. Would not have around toddlers. As always dogs temperament is up to the breeders.
My Mali is a raw fed freak of nature. Her job is PTSD/Seizure Alert K9. She is 94 lbs of pure high octane. Loyal, intelligent and quite protective..
do a standard schnauzer vid plz!
How are they in colder climates ????
They are fine with the cold but they want to be with you always wherever you go. We live in the pacific northwest and get up to 7 feet of snow and our dogs love it!
Dogumentary TV when can we expect a video on the Alaskan Malamute
Please make a video all about living with a mudi! Or, all about living with a croatian sheepdog?
Leo&marius IVE NEVER HEARD SOMEONE TALK ABOUT MUDI I LOVE YOU
Can I focus their training in tricks? I rescued to stray siblings but I’m from the city.
do malinois shed like german shepherd? or are they like the groenendale ?
i'm thinking of buying one.....
No the Malinois shed a lot less. Even Groenendael and Tervuren shed less than a German shepherd.
Depending on the lines they have a slightly shorter double coat than a GSD but they shed year round, a lot.
Do a video with the TERVUEREN too 😍
Ronja it’s all the same tbh. Or at least they should be the same as all the Belgian Shepherd varieties EXCEPT in coat.
How are they around horses
What kind of jobs would be good for them if they live in a home?
Can you do a video on Briard dogs, Dachshunds, and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers?
such a beautiful stride
nice document 📝
Nice 👌
More of this breed
Does anyone know if they can adapt to other dogs in the house/garden? (2 dachshunds, seniors) + 1 little adopted dog.
We want to welcome a dog like this to our home, but there is very little info in my country.
Kind regards (:
Yes absolutely. They are amazing with other dogs and cats. But better take a puppy,.
Guys, I want a dog to teach him how to open and close a gate by pulling a rope attached to the latch, do you think this breed would do that job?
Nice job
Do a documentary on Tervuren
How are they with children?
Is this dog a header or heeler ?
I gotta get another.
I have one that looks just like this one here black eyes as well
please do a video on irish terriers I can't find 1 anywhere😂
Would love to see some sighthound videos!
Does anyone know if these dogs are good with horses in general. I want a dog that can do trail rides.
it's possible you can have a good dog to go along with a horse but I don't think it's highly probable without a lot of effort. socialization is probably going to be the most important thing here and having a dog that's open to new experiences and well-tempered. Best wishes, I sure love my dog!
Mals,bels & dutchies. That’s a bloody good gene pool
Jake Mals are the same thing as other Belgian Shepherd varieties. Only differ in coat
Can you do a dogumentary about Dalmatians?
can you look at doing a video for a Finnish Lapphund?
If anyone lives in California I would like to have one of these puppies ❤
You should do a documentary based on Berger Blanc Suisse.
I am from belgium
