I was fortunate enough to witness the changing of the guard back in 2002. What some people forget is that these are not actors, they are real soldiers and they are on guard duty. They are protecting this tomb as any soldier would protect a military base. Every effort should be made by any visitor to not interfere with this duty.

In any case, for those who simply can't show respect and follow the rules, the options ought to be (in order): 1) being firmly advised to follow the rules/requirements; 2) get run through with a bayonet; 3) be asked to leave. One time someone came walking up from the front not realizing where they were (they’re stupid for not seeing the signs but they didn’t intentionally walk into the area), and the other time was some Asian lady who went around the rail to get a better picture. Don’t think she even spoke English. My point is that 99.9% of the time people are respectful and fine, and when this happens it’s usually not an American. Although obviously sometimes it is

Is there a penalty for approaching or trying to desecrate the tomb?
Edit: Did some reasearch and apparently - YES those rifles are loaded and fully functional. If the person is not an immediate threat, the Guard issue three increasingly severe warnings before bringing their rifle to bear. If the person approaches the Guard after the first warning they will bring their rifle to bear immediately. If the person is not an immediate danger, they can be arrested and brought up on a surprisingly large number of charges, not the least of which is human endangerment since they caused the Guard to bring to bear a potentially lethal weapon. Obviously the Guard do not intend to go around shooting American citizens who step a tad out of line at a place of reverence and respect, however if it's too over the top the person can be removed.

I just watched your "New Zealand Girl Reacts to US NAVY AIRCRAFT CARRIER CONTROLLED CHAOS" video, I think you should see this as well: 'Dangerous Navy Jobs - Centerdeck Operator Catapult #3' and also, more U.S. history and a personal favorite of mine, 'Big Boy 4014 Steam Train: Return To Steam!' (I know it's long, but I feel it's worth it). I would really like to see more people watching and learning the history of these amazing machines. As of 2019, only one is still operational, with seven on static display. Sadly, the rest have been scrapped over the years. Many of the remaining engines are being left to rust without any restoration work, and I believe everyone should get to see these engines before they are destroyed by the weather. I hope you see this and enjoy these videos as much as I did!

Heres a guy you might be interested in. His name is Desmond Doss and he was the only conscientious objector who never carried a weapon to win the congressional medal of honor in WWll. This clip is from the movie Hacksaw Ridge, based on a true story. Desmond was a shy socially awkward guy who was so religious he refuse to even touch a weapon. His sergeant in boot camp called him out in front of his entire squad and told them not to rely on Desmond to have their backs. His captain tried 3 times to get him booted even charging him with mental illness. the captain told him that he would NEVER have Desmond at his side in battle. (Des later saved his life) And his fellow recruits mocked an harassed him and even threw boots at him while he was praying. What this clip shows is what Desmond did after the Americans were forced to retreat off the ridge. He did this an estimated 75 times over a 12 hour period, saving 75 soldiers before he was wounded himself. this was not a one time thing either. He earned two Bronze Stars for valor before this for his actions on Guam and another island. He didn't stay back at the aid station. He was right in the middle of the fighting treating wounded and pulling them back to safety ua-cam.com/video/r8Tr2KLGzb4/v-deo.html

It was a hot n' muggy late May and in just one day, I had witnessed an individual being called out by the sentry for sitting during the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a dozen tourists chatting it up and laughing like it was an outdoor party at the Kennedy family burial site, and if I hadn't seen enough, later the same day I saw several people wading in the fountain at the World War II Memorial! Absolutely no respect, and it all had completely upset me since I'm a U.S. Marine Veteran. I gave my "two cents" and a little more, but it's a good thing the Nat'l Park Service arrived and handled all the individuals tactfully and lectured them accordingly.

Unfortunately, many people go there thinking it is just a show for tourists and they don't know the full history of the monument. My son is in the U.S. Marine Corps, and seeing people disrespect that particular monument gets my blood boiling as well.

I wish to thank you for these videos. Most people are very respectable at the Tomb but some have no respect. My family have been to the tomb and my mother and sisters belong to organization that allowed to place a wreath at the Tomb and they placed wreaths there. These ceremonies are with love and respect and dignity. Again thank you for the respect you show.

I was actually there a couple of times when I witnessed Prince Harry lay a wreath there and I also witnessed a changing of the guard ceremony. As a US citizen, it's in my experience that being silent and respectful there is actually really easy and not as hard as some people make it out to be.

@ 5:05 A woman in the crowd had fainted (or collapsed) and people were trying to assist her as her children were being moved out of the immediate vicinity to help keep them from being too traumatized. Notice the guards did not intervene when the children were being hustled across the plaza. Whereas anyone else doing that would have been in deep shit.

I went to see the tomb of the unknown soldier once with my boy scout troop once. I was the SPL/leader of the group we finished watching this we walked around and right near this people were burning the American flag. After just watching this with about 15 of my very patriotic friends we were angry and ended up picking a fight as 16-17 yr Olds we were ready to mess these people up. The police came to protect them like usual and we ended up being begged to go by the officers who agreed with us, but had to do his job.

I'm retired military and a former (Air Force) Base Honor Guard member, so yeah I know the history of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, but I think most people only know that there is a Tomb for Unknown Soldiers and they do a changing of the guard ceremony, that's it.

Some people just are just clueless and some think the rules don’t apply to them. Some just let emotions overwhelm them. There is audio of a WW2 Captain who got emotional and excited at a wreath laying at the tomb for a soldier of his who remains had been located only a couple years ago. The Captain had put on his old uniform for the ceremony. He let his emotions cause him to start talking about how he felt to the others with him who had help find his missing man. You could hear the sentinel yelling “Officers are to maintain proper bearing at all times”.

That being said it pisses me off to no end to see the Tomb disrespected. There are literally signs ever 10 feet explaining proper behavior . Maintain Silence and Respect exactly as the guards state. You have to remember that this is one of the most popular tourist sites in The Washington D.C. area (it's actually across the Potomac River in Arlington, Va.). As such many non-english speaking tourists visit it yearly. That was probably the case when in one of the early videos you can see the couple on the left, trying to go down the steps, seemingly trying to figure out why the soldier is yelling at them.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY should go there without the utmost respect for the men that gave their lives for our country and respect for our country en toto. Unfortunately, there are too many in this country that don't have that respect. From a proud American, thank you for the honor you show our men in uniform and the men that sacrificed all for our country. Certain others really need to take notes from you. God bless you and yours.

One thing I realized in this video was that if an active Guard's march was altered, he would continue off the path until reaching the proper end...not continue on the ritual, but ramp up the guard aspect. Wonder if that throws off the changing ceremony because the previous watch was interrupted, there is a prescribed number of steps per minute in their watch cycle?

Those sentries don't play! When they tell you to do something, they mean it! Personally, I love it when after a sentry tells a crowd to remain silent, you can hear a pin drop!
Interesting tidbit of information for you here, Courtney. The Tomb of the Unknown in located in Arlington National Cemetery. The cemetery grounds were once the personal estate of Robert E. Lee who commanded Confederate forces in the civil war. When the civil war broke out, the Federal government seized the grounds and began using it as a field hospital for wounded Union soldiers. To spite General Lee, a Union general suggested burying Union war dead on the grounds. That's how Arlington cemetery got its start. After the civil war, Robert E. Lee's son sued the US government for illegally seizing his family's estate and the Supreme Court eventually ruled in his favor. He later then sold the estate back to the Federal government.
Arlington National Cemetery is indeed hallowed grounds. Many notables in US history are buried there including John F. Kennedy, the crew of Apollo 1 who died in the launch pad fire of January, 1967 as well as some members of the space shuttle Challenger. I do hope you get to make a trip to Arlington someday. It'll be worth the trip.

Yes, it's disgusting, I'm a veteran of the United States Navy and it makes me furious that people can be so disrespectful before, during and after the changing of the guard. Why attend if you can't remain silent and treat the the proceedings with respect? It's not Cedar Point, or a Thanksgiving Day parade.

When I was there 99% of the people were very respectful. There were some foreign visitors and 1 or 2 Americans that I think did quite “get it” as to how important this is. A quick reprimand though, and everyone was on point. I think some people just see it as a tourist attraction and forget what it’s there for.
What was worse to me was the WWII memorial. People, foreign visitors and Americans treat it as a fountain in a park. It’s disgusting. People let their kids play in the water and stuff. Disgusting.

Some people just don't get it. Back when I was on active duty my unit was given the honor to lead the annual Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone day parade held every year in his hometown of Raritan, New Jersey. Funny Basilone was a Marine Corps legend who earned the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle for Guadalcanal during World War 2, he was later killed in action during the battle for Iwo Jima where he earned he Navy Cross. I was part of the color guard leading the parade, at the end we returned the colors and changed into our short sleeves shirts to mingle with the crowd and grab something to eat. As we were headed across the street a local volunteer fire company rode past with a water cannon on the truck and thought it would be funny to hose us down. You've never seen 5 more pissed off Marines than us that day.
