They even walked during the hurricanes. I for one could not make this one. I greatly appreciate what they do. I took my son there and told him all about it. After that I took him to Arlington cemetery and the grave of Sgt Valentin. My brother in arms who lost his life saving mine and one other. It’s important he understands the sacrifices some make for our freedoms. God bless these soldiers.

Tomb Guard Badge, The entire regiment of The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, "The Old Guard" of which the Tomb Sentinels are part, where the Honor Guard Tab (the blue shoulder tab). The Tomb badge is the metal device on the right lower chest. That can be revoked and the name is removed from the wall in the Tomb Quarters.

Hi Courtney, Arlington is a place you will never forget. It is very, very large and the Tomb of the Unknown is a post many soldiers aspire to. It has a different , deeper meaning stepping onto the grounds if you have served, fought, sacrificed but made it home. Its a high honor to guard those who couldnt return , or in the larger scope have been laid to rest at Arlington. If you get the chance to go, be aware there are many ways to be thoughtful, considerate and respectful of exactly where you are. If you by chance see coins laid on tombstones or grave markers, there is a code for those as well. A penny means you are visiting this particular person, a nickel means you went to basic with them, a dime means you served with them and a quarter means you were there when they died. Do not disturb any coin you see, or flowers. I love to see your interest in learning more, you are young and I salute your fiancee for his service.

As I understand it. This is about guarding the bones/remains of those that died but their Dog tags as they are called were not with the bones/body so if no one was there that knew the guy they went back home to their country or were buried with no name. Hence why their families never got to bury their son or sibling. I say son as to the best of my knowledge and going back to when this was set up they were doing this for combat soldiers and back then that meant only Men filled that role.
And as I understand it they are not allowed to drink alcohol or swear in public the rest of their lives.

Courtney, I'm not really sure you understand who the guards remain vigilant for. The persons buried at at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Are just that, unknown. They gave up everything in the defense of their country. Their youth, their future, their lives.. Even their identity.
Their sacrifice, and the duty of the Sentinel's vigilance; pays homage to all unknown US service members, that gave their lives in each of the major engagements of the United States. And to the family members who will never bury their loved ones.

A Sentinel can lose the right to wear the badge even decades after they leave the military. The badge can be officially stripped if the Sentinel brings dishonor to himself or others.

yes the battle of gallipoli was a complete and total disaster, the ANZACs were slaughtered during that engagement and the ones that made it ashore only were able to hold a small foothold, and for almost a year they suffered because the british were too stubborn to admit that the operation was a complete failure. the british finally pulled all the troops out after almost a year, and the results were alot of men dead for absolutely no gain.

Big facts. It’s so devastating to think about how those men were sent to their deaths.

Yep through everything, I don't know if you were told but a hurricane hit 200+ miles an hour winds and they were told they could leave if they chose to and they stayed and continued the march

LOL! We have never had a 200 mph wind in DC. Both Isabel and Sandy had sustained winds of 70 mph. No orders to leave the Unknowns were given. They had the option to stand at the top of the stairs, but stayed on the plaza.
