Never had Latakia gotta try some. Thanks
Ordered some C&D Latakia and can't wait to try it. I'm an aromatic smoker who is trying to expand my horizons in the pipe tobacco world.
Another great video! Made me load a bowl of Lancer's Slices.
I have mostly cyprian lat mixtures, but the one i have with syrian def has something different about it. It's a little sweeter, to my tastebuds. Also a different smokiness to the jar note and flavor. It has an almost floral vibe, and more leathery notes. Euphoria by pipes and pleasures in Columbus from back in '09. They recently reopened and the owner told me that she hopes to have it back in production soon. She didn't mention whether or not she's sourced some Syrian, but I hope that's the case.
Good video. You're pipe smoking journey was on par exactly with mine. I smoked so much of the English/Balkan blends I went to the straight Burleys/Virginias which were cigarish. I smoked cigars before pipes, so I liked it. Then did a 360 back to aromatics. But I love everything.
Great talk, I like Balkan and English blends myself…. Which have a little Latakia in them. I’ve never tried a straight Latakia tobacco.
Syrian Latakia basically is no more. According to the blenders I’ve heard at pipe shows from the big houses like C&D and Mac Baren, production in Syria stopped years ago due to both the Syrian government shutting it down and the non-stop civil war destroying crops and facilities. Anything that still has it is being made from dwindling stockpiles that were built up all the way back in the 1980s. C&D lost their supply in a large warehouse fire. Mac Baren says they ran out in 2018. Enjoy it when you can find it. There are some industry reports that tobacco cultivation is making a small comeback in northern Syria, so maybe there’s some hope for a revival.
Great info Piper. Have you had the opportunity to try any Syrian Ladekia Piper???
Only a couple times when friends have had tins of Mac Baren’s HH Vintage Syrian.
Better then Perique
Thanks for your review! It was very informative and enjoyable and I will try Latakia!
