... just a detour ... to Lower Saxon´s countryside...and a hunt for a tin of aged Syrian Latakia Blend, done by Mc Lintock... Location: www.google.de/...
It's always nice to go for a hunt on rare or aged tobaccos. I find that's one of the best things about pipe smoking. You wouldn't have that with cigarettes.
Ah, the thrill of the hunt! Then the satisfaction of obtaining something that has no value in the eyes of most smokers, but, to you, it is a treasure. A most enjoyable tour of the small town and shop. I really enjoy these types of videos. Thanks Mark!
Thank you for taking us on another adventure. You videos got me into the hobby of pipe smoking so I thank you for that. I think it's a connection from my Oma and Opa being from Berlin, and the way you do your videos.
Hello Zack! Many thanks for taking the time!...and also many thanks for your good words! Glad, you enjoy the videos...and the hobby! Take care - and...see you again...LOL Mark
Wonderful video - even when the police mess it up! Nothing better than getting out and hunting for treasures! Just discovering the UA-cam pipe community. It's so wonderful. It was Matches 860 that brought me here. Going to enjoy watching more of you videos!
Great video. That blend from Mcclintoks really sounds good and 9 years of age also helps. Thanks for bringing us along! Cheers from the city of brotherly love.
Great videos.Good style and really enjoy your accent and the cadence of your words when you speak English.Dig the black suit, pretty sharp, kind of like a German pipe smoking Johnny Cash. Dig your style and enjoy your videos! Great content and great info, keep them coming!
I always enjoy your videos Mark and look forward to them. Your country is very beautiful and I appreciate you sharing it with us and what a great tobacco find. Enjoy it in good health.
Another thoroughly enjoyable video. Congratulations on a successful hunt! I too occasionally happen upon aged tins that others avoid in favor of "fresh" tobacco. I'm amazed that old tins are scorned by so many. Their loss. Thanks for taking us on the hunt! Take care.
Greetings Mark! This was indeed a good video! I enjoyed the drive and the scenery of Germany. What a great find in that tobacco shop! I so wish I had a local shop here. Be well and enjoy that fine tin!...Mike
Great timing with the boat...that was great. I enjoy finding tobacco tucked away in little shops as well, although small shops are getting harder and harder to come by. On my last hunt I came across a great locally hand made humidor. Great video as usual. Take care.
Hello Stacey, Thanks for watching - truly appreciated! And...yes...its the same here...less and less tobacco shops. And some of them even give the "old stuff" back to the producer...I think, because they don`t have enough space for leftovers... But that just means, we have to try harder...LOL Take care! Mark
+Bremen Pipe Smoker hello wow what a wonderful review of this blend u had a gd tobacco hunt very nice I just love the scenery so beautiful thanks so much for sharing my friend happy smoking :)
Ha ha well you thought you had a quiet spot to shoot at hey? I thoroughly enjoyed this little trip my European friend. I think you scored a nice smoke. I believe it was worth the trip. Cheers
Hello John! Many thanks, for taking the time - and nice words! Means a lot to me! Well...my car and me ...we know each other very well...since we do 40thousand km a year together...LOL Take care, John! And be well! Mark
I enjoyed this tobacco hunt, a nice concept for a video. Got me looking at Google maps to see where Gnarrenburg is relative to Bremen. Thanks for the entertaining video, the customs sticker decoding and the German police dry humour.
Hello Mark! Another nice video my friend! Very nice little town. Looks like a very nice place to have a walk and enjoy a beer on a terrasse on a warm sunny day! I have never went on a tobacco hunt... Maybe I should be more aware of that when I enter a small tobacco shop! BTW, a real german driver!!!! :-) Making the tires scream on the asphalt!! :-) Take care and Be well my friend!
Hello Gilles, my friend! Many thanks for taking the time! Yes...its really a nice town. The historical parts are completely intact and (nearly) without any destructions by the war....thats very rare here in Germany... Its unclear, why the allied air forces spared the town...a legend says, there was a nice of Churchill living in Nienburg...lol...but thats just a legend... Unfortunately you can`t see the manuell gear shifting in the video...thats the "german part"...LOL Take care! And be well! Talk soon! Mark
Great review Mark. Always a pleasure watching your video's my friend. And hey it was cool the police boat, better than a damn neighbor mowing. lmao... Have a great weekend... 🔥🔥🔥
Hello Eric, my friend! Thanks a lot for watching ... and...yeah...I was surprised, because, I thought, it may be fisher boat, thats behind my back...and when I turned around, I just realized....its the police! Thats always the moment, when all your sins come to your mind again...LOL! Take care! And talk soon, my friend! Mark
Good hunting sir, always good to get a tin with some age, so enjoy. Got 2 tins of Mc barens dark twist roll cake after your last video, so going to open & try one tin but put the other away & try & forget about it for at least a few years!! So thanks again. Regards Mjs
Thanks for watching! and yes...thats a brilliant idea...hope, you are patient enough...thats always the most difficult part for me...so, I guess, I have to go for some more hunts...LOL Take care! And be well! Mark
My grandparents came to the US from Spalt in the early 1900's. Do you know of that small town? Is it anywhere near Breman? Just wondering. I enjoy all your videos very much. Been smoking pipes for about 45 years now.
No...Spalt is deep down in the south...a six our ride from Bremen...beautiful anyway... But I guess, your grandparents have seen Bremen, before they left...cos 90percent of all Germans, heading for America, did it by one the Bremen harbors...just showed Ethan some days ago the building, were they all have gone through, to enter of the ships... Take care, my friend! Hope, you're well! Mark
2020 that was a great selection of packaged blends they had. Pipe tobacco has all but disappeared from the shelves in the US. Must order it online. None in the drugstores anymore. its sad
I would love to find a tin of that tobacco. I love Syrian Latakia...when I can find it. Now I'll be on the hunt for that one. It's fun to find something rare.
i make a e-juice with that flavor its strong as F 1 drop per 10ml flavor art makes it // u can taste the tobacco b/c ur not lighting it on fire ,, anybody on the east coast i can make u a sample , if u vape //
Hey Bremen I subscribed because your awesome adventures for amazing pipe tobacco. I'm not exactly a new enthusiast for pipe tobacco but lately I have been expanding my pipes and tobacco. and I have a question about meerschaum, their are alot of cheap ones on the market as well as expensive. how do you know which ones are worth buying for some one who actually plans to smoke them but doesn't exactly wants to buy super cheap ones either? also it will be my first meerschaum so tips on care and stuff would be great, do you have a video on that??
Many thanks for watching...and for the sub! Well...have you seen my video about "Meerschaum talk"? Perhaps that could be a start for you...and there is another video about buying custom built Meerschaums (hopefully) coming soon...hang in... :-) Take care! Be well! Mark
Wow what a wonderful display of pipe tobacco..In the UK supermarkets are not allowed by law to show their tobacco, it’s all closed off behind behind the counter ..Thanks for showing us.
It's same as in Japan. Tobacco shops in countryside sometime have aged nice tobacco, so when I go travel to countryside, I often go to tobacco shop there. Nice video !
Hey there Mark. I've commented on a couple of your vids before but I'm going through them one by one, and couldn't help but comment again. Love your concept, very informative and entertaining. I'm also curious if you wouldn't mind sharing your packing method, you seem to be able to chat for minutes at a time with out your pipe going out. Any tips? Thank you sir!
Thanks for taking the time! And nice comment! Well...there is no big secret to it....I prefer, to take the tobacco in the bowl in one portion, without tamping or pressing in between...I try to keep the tobacco as twisted as possible...by that way, the glow finds it's way down to the bowl very easy... When it comes to the flakes, I rub them between the hands in rotating ways, until there is some kind of tobacco ball....very twisted. I gently put it into the bowl...that's it... But I think, its mainly a question a practice... :-) Take care! Be well! Mark
Smoked a bowl this morning using this method and it lasted longer than most have in the past! Greatly appreciated Mark! 😁. Keep up the good work man, your content is awesome.
Thank you for the video, it's useful, and the trip also, you are a great guider . 👍 Can I ask you about the meerschaum pipe, if it's good for aromatic tobacco ? And why ? Thank you sir ✌🏻️
Thanks a lot for watching - and for kind words! Yes, the Merrschaum is very useful for Aromatics. First of all, it provides a very precise taste...but it also holdes back a lot of humidity ...and (last but not least)...there is no cross over or "ghost" effect... Take care! And be well! Mark
Hi Marc ! Very nice ! Enjoy ! And thank you for explaining the meaning of the letters. It is something that i dont know till yet ! Be well and greetings to the north ! Andreas
Gread vid again mate. Haha- when the boat went by I thought you were going to get v-wet as from that angle it looks like you were standing in the water :) If you like that blend you have to try MacBaren HH Vintage Syrian Blend- it's one of my faves :)
Thanks a lot for that! Yeah...to be honest...when I heard the waves, I wasn`t quite sure, to stay dry...LOL...but don`t worry...they missed... :-) And ...yes...I have one tin of the HH Vintage Syrian in my cellar...its quite good stuff.. Take care! And be well! Mark
...lol....well, guess, they're just made for "internal use"...and we're not really supposed, to know about the code... Thanks for watching! And take care! Mark
Thanks a lot for taking the time, my friend! May I ask you something...is the production of "Lattakia" in the region still in progress? There are friends here, wondering about that... Take care! Hope, you're well! Mark
+Bremen Pipe Smoker I am so sorry i haven't seen your comment immediately ،the Production in lattakia is quite good,we have many kind of tobacco but it's owned by syran tobacco Association mostly you can buy some .
Wow , Germany has real Rum and Maple in a tin ?? Who makes that now ?? Wonder if you guys can still get Lane Limited Mountain Leaf ( or whoever makes it ?)
Hello Vince! ...well...Rum and Maple is some kind of "grandfather tobacco" here...synonym for cheap "brick and mortar" tobacco... You can find that in any fuel station. It's produced by Planta Berlin...(guess, they bought a license back in the day...also for "half and half" and other stuff)... Thanks for watching, my friend! Take care! Mark
Bremen Pipe Smoker Yes i was checking that out, Planta must have bought the rights from Lane Limited who made it when it was still sold in the states. Yes, your right, it was kind of cheap and not that good. There used to be good drugstore blends in the US but those days are gone.
MARK.. I did forget to ask you.. What pipe is that you are smoking and do you recommend it.... It's a real great looking pipe you got there my friend.. Thanks Mark.. Be well my friend ☺👌👍👍👍
...well...you're lucky, my friend...because, this is a "standard" pipe...a Peterson St. Patrick's Day 2014. I think, you should still get it...with some research perhaps.. It's absoultely reliable and could be the perfect companion for hiking...because it's short, has nice thick walls and a very good clinch...besides that: it's not expensive..LOL Take care! Mark
I'm fairly new to piping im big into the hookah hobby but recently started in piping but I have a question in not big on all the diff types of tobacco. Is their a huge flavor difference in all the diff types of tobacco? I know obviously the aromatics are diff but say the regular flavored types are their huge differences like say for example the Virginia, burley, rubbed, etc. I'm just on the smoother aromatics now for starters but will be branching out soon the hookah world has spoiled me on flavors and taste as well as smell so I'm just dabbing in aromatics but have been watching a ton of videos on pipers and the diff types of tobacco. That's my question anything will help if anyone sees this! Cheers 🍻
Hello Phil! Thanks for watching! And...yeah the differences are huge....and even for a beginner easy to detect. It really goes from camp fire to sweet candy, from pepper to sugar...even without any flavor added. You'll find out, if you just take your time and work yourself through some different tins... Take care! Be well! Mark
Mark how are you my friend ..I came back to this video because I actually found some of this tobacco ...bot not in tin unfortunately..but still want to try it and this was a great video ...thanks Mark take care be well👍🏻😀😀😀👍🏻👍🏻see you soon
Definitely going to to try it Mark.. Could not find the tin but oh well.... Can't wait to try it... I really appreciate and enjoy your videos great job my friend see you on the next one be well my friend
...yeah...pretty sure. I think, the production wasn't really completely ceased...as far as I know... And the producers had some pretty good stocks... You can taste the difference anyway...the Syrian Latakia is much smoother and softer... You should also give the Reiner 51 a shot... Take care! Be well! Mark
I've just purchased a 2oz tin of Boars Head pipe tobacco for £6.00, at a guess is about 40 years old, maybe longer. It's unopened and I've yet to summon up the courage to do so!
I really enjoyed the hunt. I'm trying to limit my latakia blends to a meerschaum, I gather with the characteristics you described that it's the right thing to do.
Thanks for watching - and kind words! The Meerschaum will give you a proper smoke...for Latakia...and also for "Amphora"...LOL Take care! And be well! Mark
Hi Mark: Another great video. Very entertaining one, too! You know....I've met a number of the German YTPC guys over the last six months or so, and it's been great. Such really nice fellows. I have noticed one thing, though. Generally speaking, most of them don't like latakia. As a matter of fact, they often have fairly strong negative opinions about the stuff. Do you have any idea why? It's pretty much the opposite reaction here in America. Or, of course, in Britain. Thanks, Mark. Really fun video, today. Be Well, my friend. Ed
Hello Ed, my friend! Thanks for taking the time - and good words! Yes, your observation is absolutely correct...I was thinking about that since several month. Athough - of course - my thinking was: "Why is (nearly) everything in America about Latakia...?" ...LOL I think, its really a complicated question...and I think, both sides are quite special compared to the rest of the pipe smoking world... In Germany, you have to consider, that the traditions of tobacco and smoking were completely interrupted by the end of WWII. Before that, most of the tobacco was imported from the Balkan region...the "normal" Cigarette was a dark Balkan cigarette ... and cigar smoking (mainly imported from Brasil and produced in the Bremen-region) was the average daily smoke of the common man (often a card board box a week...)... The line of tradition of todays pipe smoking mainly reach back to the 1970s and is related to political changes and societal orientation to the scandinavian countries..especially Denmark. Pipe smoking (often as a habbit of intellectual men) then was combined with "light" and "good smelling" tobaccos (liked by women and without the "rudeness" of the Latakia and Balkan blends, smoked by their fathers in the trenches...)....that was the spirit of the times...scandinavian names, furnitures and holiday destinations became quite popular...and still are...the cigarette was american...the pipe scandinavian... I think, thats ONE reason... And there are also reasons (I think), why americans are that much into Latakia...have you ever thought, why you don`t see any campfire videos in german (or any other..) YTPC ...and why "out in the woods" is a very american (except for Yogi perhaps..LOL) video concept... Another question is: "Why is there (nearly) no "original" Latakia - means Syrian Latakia - in America...?" ...which is more expensive than the cyprian...but also much "rounder" and "softer"... But thats all too complicated for a comment...LOL Joshua and me...we are planing on several "transatlantic tobacco talks" with many topics...and we have this one already in mind...same as the question, why germans seem to like the moisty aromatics more than other people?...we think, it has to do with the 9mm filter... Take care, Ed...hope, some of these thoughts may be useful for you...LOL Be well! Mark
Hello Mark: Thank You for this very thoughtful response. I think the points that you make are great, and very good insights. I was thinking of the types of tobacco that were smoked in America, during the 30's and 40's...the ones my father would have smoked, for example.Of course, cigarettes were extremely popular, as you mentioned. Brands like "Lucky Strike", or "Chesterfield" (all unfiltered Burley tobacco cigarettes). With pipe tobacco, the popular brands were generally Burley blends, also, like "Prince Albert". When you think of an "American" pipe tobacco, you usually think of Burley, or Kentucky. I don't think my father, or any "average Joe" (common man), ever smoked Latakia. I doubt if he knew what it was. So, I suspect, as you said, that the influence of WWII, was big in changing things. The GI's may have returned from Europe with a taste for these Balkan type tobaccos. Very interesting discussion. I will look forward to your "Trans-Atlantic" tobacco talks with Joshua. Sounds great! Thanks. Ed
...welll...thats really an interesting information...we can`t really exclude the possibility, that Germans (and Europeans except our British friends) smoke Virginia, because its so American...and Americans smoke Latakia, because its so European...
Great food for thought while I’m sipping on some Mac Baren HH Vintage Syrian that I just received. If you’ve had some HH, I’m interested in how you would compare the two.
@@grandpacavendish4422 I'm a fairly new pipe smoker and I absolutely love Latakia. The more Latakia a blend has, the better, as far as I'm concerned. As for the reason American pipe smokers love Latakia, I think it may have something to do with the similarities between the taste of Latakia and American BBQ. I'm from the south and a smoked whole hog, with a strong vinegar based sauce, is my absolute favorite food. However, alot people, in other parts of the world, probably wouldn't like smoked pork with a vinegar based sauce, but it's an American delicacy, when done correctly, especially in the deep south. Latakia tobacco is very similar in flavor IMO.... Just my 2 cents, but I'm positive, it's the reason I love Latakia....
Haha Great video mein freund! and beautiful town, I'm trying to cellar some tobacco but I usually don't have the luxury of buying that much. Is there any traditional type of tobacco in Germany? Cheers -Dustan
Hello Dustan! Thanks a lot for watching and kind words! Yeah...it's the same for me...I normally don't cellar, although, it would be a good idea... And ... well...there are some traditional german brands here, like John Aylesbury or Planta Berlin...and tobaccos (german and non german) traditionally smoked by many pipe smokers....like some of the stanwell tobaccos...mainly B&M stuff... Take care...and be well! Mark
sure about the letter standing for the year? I have a tin of dunhill that I know is from 2015 and it also says 'G' on the tax seal. so it might just mean Germany.
Yeah...a common mistake... The very small letter near the price is always a "G" ...guess it means "Germany"... Some producers - and in this case "Planta Berlin" - use an extra letter right beside the producers number...thats the one, telling the year of production... So, the tin in in the video for example has of course the "G"...near the eagle...then the producers number (363) and an "H" for the year... Hope, that was of some help...unfortunately the camera didn`t get the sharprness right...otherwise, you would have seen it...sorry...! Take care! Mark
+Bremen Pipe Smoker everything clear now, thanks! I wish all tobacco companies would simply put the year of production on the tin like the vintage of a bottle of wine. that would make things so much easier
It's always nice to go for a hunt on rare or aged tobaccos. I find that's one of the best things about pipe smoking. You wouldn't have that with cigarettes.

Take care! Be well!
Mark
Smoked a bowl this morning using this method and it lasted longer than most have in the past! Greatly appreciated Mark! 😁. Keep up the good work man, your content is awesome.

Thank you for the video, it's useful, and the trip also, you are a great guider . 👍
Can I ask you about the meerschaum pipe, if it's good for aromatic tobacco ?
Take care! And be well!

...don't know really...
It's allowed at Ronny's place...and I just do it... :-)

Take care!
Mark
Bremen Pipe Smoker
Yes i was checking that out, Planta must have bought the rights from Lane Limited who made it when it was still sold in the states. Yes, your right, it was kind of cheap and not that good.
There used to be good drugstore blends in the US but those days are gone.
Great video! What pipe are you smoking there?
Thanks for watching and nice words!
Which pipe? In the Beginning or at the end?
Take care!
Mark
+Bremen Pipe Smoker At the beginning. It sure is a beautiful one.
...its a Peterson St. Patrick`s day 2014...there is a video "castle lichtenberg with my peterson", where you can take a closer look!
Take care!
Mark
It's absoultely reliable and could be the perfect companion for hiking...because it's short, has nice thick walls and a very good clinch...besides that: it's not expensive..LOL
Take care!
Mark
MARK I thank you very much for the information I'm going to try to find one thanks again for all take care my friend be well
I'm fairly new to piping im big into the hookah hobby but recently started in piping but I have a question in not big on all the diff types of tobacco.
Many thanks for watching (again) my friend!...LOL Give it a shot...may be a good companion for hiking...
Take good care! And be well!
Mark
Definitely going to to try it Mark.. Could not find the tin but oh well.... Can't wait to try it... I really appreciate and enjoy your videos great job my friend see you on the next one be well my friend
Another excellent pipe smoking video!
Thanks for that, Steve! So much appreciated!
Take care!
Mark
I just bought Ashton Artisan's Blend and Macbaren HH Vintage Syrian. Are those really using Syrian Latakia?
...yeah...pretty sure. I think, the production wasn't really completely ceased...as far as I know... And the producers had some pretty good stocks... You can taste the difference anyway...the Syrian Latakia is much smoother and softer... You should also give the Reiner 51 a shot...
Take care! Be well!
Mark
Bremen Pipe Smoker I will try to find that, thank you for your time.
They have Kentucky Bird. I've been trying to get my hands on some of that for YEARS. It's impossible to find in the states.
I've just purchased a 2oz tin of Boars Head pipe tobacco for £6.00, at a guess is about 40 years old, maybe longer. It's unopened and I've yet to summon up the courage to do so!
...just do it! That's why they packed it in the first place... :-)
Thanks for watching, my friend!
Take care! Hope. you're well!
Mark
I did open it, but it had gone rock solid and resembled a lump of road tar. Oh well, the empty tin looks good in the collection.
I really enjoyed the hunt. I'm trying to limit my latakia blends to a meerschaum, I gather with the characteristics you described that it's the right thing to do.
Thanks for watching - and kind words!
The Meerschaum will give you a proper smoke...for Latakia...and also for "Amphora"...LOL
Take care! And be well!
Mark
Haha, "Amphora", my daily favorite. There was a time when it was KIng of the aromatics!
Athough - of course - my thinking was: "Why is (nearly) everything in America about Latakia...?" ...LOL
I think, its really a complicated question...and I think, both sides are quite special compared to the rest of the pipe smoking world...
But thats all too complicated for a comment...LOL
Joshua and me...we are planing on several "transatlantic tobacco talks" with many topics...and we have this one already in mind...same as the question, why germans seem to like the moisty aromatics more than other people?...we think, it has to do with the 9mm filter...
Take care, Ed...hope, some of these thoughts may be useful for you...LOL
Be well!
@@grandpacavendish4422
I'm a fairly new pipe smoker and I absolutely love Latakia.
You are a smart man. Good on you for capitalizing on your fellow mans ignorance
I dig your style.
... :-)
Thanks for that!
Take care!
Mark
Very curious what watch are you wearing?
That's a Hamilton Jazzmaster Maestro Auto Chrono...
Take care! Be well!
Mark
I really wish you would have smoked the tobacco from the tin you purchased and told the tale.
Is that a fountain pen clipped to your pocket by chance?
You got a sharp eye... it's a Pelikan Souveraen M1000 ...my every day companion for 17 yrs now...
I thought I recognized that clip! Excellent choice of pen as well, Pelikans are fantastic writers.
Planta is cheap and super underrated. Germany is on point with beer and pipe tobacco. I wish the states had Bavarian Brewing laws.
Mark
What pipe were you smoking in the car?
...a Peterson St, Patrick's day 2014...
sure about the letter standing for the year? I have a tin of dunhill that I know is from 2015 and it also says 'G' on the tax seal. so it might just mean Germany.
of course, that wouldn't explain why yours has an H. I'm confused now..
I wish all tobacco companies would simply put the year of production on the tin like the vintage of a bottle of wine. that would make things so much easier
...completely agreed!
Great video! Still, I have question. Why does he speak like a mix between German and a southern planter from the American civil war?
...yeah...sorry...lol...perhaps too much HBO... :-)
Thanks for watching anyway!
Take care!
Mark
Nice trip! :)
Cheers!
