It has been a few years since I had to fix my pool screen. Like you discussed it is an aggravating job. Thanks for the quick review, and especially for the laughs.
Excellent, clear and humorous demonstration. Great job! Many other video's attempting to describe this process are complete failures. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! Best advice ever! Call a damn professional and be done with it for $30 or less. I wasted hours trying to do it myself. I even bought flat spline online that was the wrong measurement. Very frustrating. Then called a local professional and had it done for $28. The cell phone is the best tool for this job!
Hey Thank You! I searched out your video because I was getting frustrated. I’ve used round spline before but not flat spline and WOW what a difference. Watched your install tips and the rest was ... way less frustrating. Thanks again!
The other part of the flat spline fiasco is finding the correct flat spline and understanding the vagueness of the descriptions by the sellers. There are many different widths and the sellers are vague and sometimes don't describe the width of the spline or say only that it is for a particular type of window screen and don't tell you how to measure the channel. Many general comments about what kind to buy make the process harder than necessary. Thanks for your video. It was to the point and showed us how to get the process started. Thanks! Just seeing the process done helped a lot.
This was the best video I've found. I live in Fort Myers and I have to replace some that were blown out from the hurricane. As do 1,000 of other homeowners. You're right, it is not easy. In fact, it requires lots of patience. Loved your added humor. This is going to take me all day to replace 5 panels. 😃
...I can actually give you a secret tool that isn't click bait...buy the retaining install clips...they will hold the entire section of screen you're installing to alleviate the weight of the screen that fights you as you're trying to start the spline...hope your recovery is going well...
I was totally doing this thing backwards. I was doing all the things that you were saying not to do. Thanks for making this video brother, you saved me from myself.
Well, that Michigan symbol says it all !! (Go Bucks ! Even though that team up north beat us this year ! ) Besides all that, I agree with your comment ! I was so glad for his funny video also !! Take care have a good one. Good Luck on your next installs ! I love youtube, real life saver !
Too funny! I am a "screen repair guy" and only searched because a customer (wanting a dirt cheap deal) told me how easy rescreening is cause he saw it on UA-cam. Thought I'd check out some UA-cam videos. Glad I did! Good stuff.
Hey I have an addendum here. Definitely use some tape or clips that you can purchase online to hold up the top while you are moving across. I did not have any when I did this video but now that I just replaced a second screen using the tape it was a lot less frustrating
I use duct tape to hold the screen on the other side, then start two or three feet of the spline in the groove, spray it with soapy water, and it goes pretty easy, you know, just a little lubrication
Good tutorial for beginners! I just made my helper sit and watch your video. I've been building and servicing screen rooms and pool enclosures for almost 9yrs. The pros make it look easy (and it really is once you get your technique down). I would definitely invest in a better roller.. however!! You won't find a spline roller that's really any good at your local Home Depot. Every seasoned aluminum installer ive known custom builds there own rollers. I've seen many different kinds. The real reason I'm writing this post is I have to say the comment about the flat vs round spline I can't agree with lol. Once you've installed several hundred miles of screen then you'll agree.... Round spline SUUUUCKS! lol. Even still great video!
Yep, that worked for me. But I found a secret too! You have your right hand working the spline tool and your left hand guiding/stretching as you work. But here's something I found to help. Take the spline that you have hanging down on the left side, lift it up and drape it over your left hand & over your left arm. That will alleviate the weight of the spline from pulling down from where you are pushing in the slot. It helps keep the spline about level with the slot while working it in with your right hand. NOTE: Your left fingers are holding the screen AND also positioning the spline into the slot at the same time. Call it multitasking with fingers if you will. I hope this helps. It's a real tough job.
I love the way you explain it yeah it's not very easy but you did a real good job of explaining it and you best tool is your cell phone thank you for your help though that was very instructional and very easy for the common man to understand what you doing good job
Central FL residents can call integrity screens if they want a job done right that guy has done it for 20 something years and I honestly recommend him. Funny video
Just for chucks, today, after hurricane Ian, and living in Arcadia Fl, I lost several screens on lanai, they had the flat spline, the ones that had the round spline stayed put.
I wanna see a vid on doing the 11' triangle corners of a pool cage. That's when you call a pro. I helped a pretty experienced guy today...not easy doing corners.
Concave ) wheel is for round spline. Rounded ( wheel is for flat spline. Install upper right corner on the vertical and finish to ground. Move to the left side and install spline in the vertical. On the upper rail install spline 2"- 3" on the right upper corner. Take thumb and lift and hold screen level. Use the round ( wheel and pre-roll screen. Grab the spline and stretch across pre rolled screen and now roll spline into groove. Alway make sure the little squares in the screen run parallel to the spline groove for easier install. Usually runs $1.50 - $4.00 a square for rescreening panels depending on location of panels .ie. wall or roof
I just replaced some screen in my pool enclosure. Lost my religion several times doing it. Used too heavy screen material, which made the job even more difficult. Not a job to be done in the heat of the Florida sun.
I totally appreciate your video and especially the secret weapon. I wish someone had talked me out of doing spray foam insulation by myself. I cursed the you tube gurus for days fir making it look easy, as im picking green spray foam out of my hair. Hello, I would like to add that the flat type of spline in used with a flat spline lintel (aluminum) framing because it holds up much better in higher winds. Also the key is to put the spline materials out in the SUN for a while before using. Let it bake. If you can't do that then maybe use the floor heater in your truck to heat the spine up.
My *@%! cat somehow ripped through the screen on my patio chasing a stray cat in the back yard. So now I have a rip along going down the side and bottom of one of the screen walls. The repair person was gonna charge about $300 to fix, but after watching your video, even though it looks to be a pain in the rear, I'm gonna try fixing it myself.
15 Minutes and I would make you a proficient entry level screen technician. There are a handful of "techniques" to be learned... With that said start to finish for a single bottom panel cleared of debris (i.e. "spline grooves" accessible) is less than 5 minutes! And actually much easier than you'd think. #Technique
the flat spline is for Storm type (heavy duty) screen enclosures, got that info from the local hardware guy who explained the difference to me. i can get it on with patience and the screen tool. Happy screen replacement everyone :)
EXACTLY. The witdth and flexibility of the flat 'ribbon'-type spline act like a lever. One side edge of the flat spline is deep in the groove (or 'spline channel'). The other edge of the flat spline is forced into the top region of the channel. If any pressure is exerted on the screen by a high wind (which some states experience every year, seasonally) - the flat 'ribbon' spline is lodged in, and completely fills, the entire depth of the channel, which locks the screen in place. While it's harder to REMOVE old flat spline - THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT, get that lever into the channel, BAM that screen ain't goin' nowheres. Round spline in seasonal high-wind states has no leverage in the groove. It's round.
Also, if you're using a heavier or thicker screen (like pet screen), you can use the roller to push the screen into the channel. It will hold the screen in place. No need for duct tape or a helper.
I was able to remove the flat spline and torn screen and replace the screen using a .175 Round spline. Went in nice and tight. Holding great. Just a thought. 😎✌🏼
First step, get a screened in pool. Thank god I only have to worry about a section on my screen door. The round spline at your local walmart is the worst, because it never stayed in place.

you were great. It was funny and informative, but it would’ve been more helpful. If you showed what you did when you got to the corners, did you just continue with the spine all the way around the frame to where you started or did you cut it off at each corner and start with a new piece of spline, Anyway, very helpful. I was just trying to understand that step I guess you could do it either way thanks though

Flat spline locks into place to handle the wind load on large panels. Round spline will roll out under high winds like we have in Florida.
EXACTLY. The witdth and flexibility of the flat 'ribbon'-type spline act like a lever. One side edge of the flat spline is deep in the groove (or 'spline channel'). Round spline in seasonal high-wind states has no leverage in the groove. It's round.
I've seen many videos and they always do the open side. No tight spaces. I wanna see you do the bottom. You need clips as well.
Also, if you're using a heavier or thicker screen (like pet screen), you can use the roller to push the screen into the channel. It will hold the screen in place. No need for duct tape or a helper.
On thicker screen once spline is in about 4 inches pull spline to make it go in easily
