I love Sav-a-Lot. They still have a butcher to cut up meat rather than just shipping in pre-packed meat like Wal-mart (and many other places). They also have incredible deals every month. T-bone is $3.99/lb. right now (many places charge almost that much for ground beef). I don't buy much other than meat there and I usually stock the deep freeze with whatever they have on sale.
Stellar Static the Walton Family doesn't pay property taxes for every establishment in the US. Pays piss poor wages to their employees. That's just a bit you should know. Gets massive tax breaks, and stashes their money away in a big vault in Panama.
@@mateojames3231 why do the employees stay? Just for the employee discount? Funny how so many people hate Wal-Mart yet everyone works there or shops there.
Part of sams success was he didn't puss money away. He had a small house 10 minutes from me. He drove an old ford truck. The first stores were warehouses more or less. Nothing fancy. Only had what was needed. Nothing that wasn't needed. Unlike a lot of the people and companies of Bentonville today who compete to see who has the prettiest office building or house and most expensive cars and fancy clothes.
JDM A'F My ex works for Walmart, and on top of the decent pay, after 6 months of working there is the 10% store discount on non food items at any store in the USA, the option for medical benefits, and 401k retirement plans. The downsides are long hours, little time off(unless it's for medical reasons), and if you are on general stock duty, and/or lawn and garden/seasonal, then you better be in decent shape to walk across that store, and lift the items. Edit: to be known I spent 5 1/2 years at Dollar General, and with the shitty hours they gave us, the low pay(minimum wage) the fact we had to pay for our uniforms, very little time off of merit(meaning you might get a day off in the middle of the week, or go to work at 5am one day, and 4pm the next day), so if we wanted any of the crappy benefits we just about ended up owing the company money, so it was either take your shitty paycheck home, or have the 1/2 assed medical benefits( the base plan only covered $1,000 of medical cost a year), so yeah Walmart employees have it good compared to stores like Dollar General.
Birmingham AL here. Rally's was me and my cousins favorite growing up. You cannot beat their fries, and a Big Buford makes a damned Big Mac look like play-Doh food. We had an odd occurrence in the early nineties. We had our local Rally's that we'd always gone to. Then, suddenly down the road, literally not even a mile, a Checkers opened. And this was 1992 or 93. We didn't know what the hell a checkers was, so we went through there. And we discovered it was the exact burgers, fries, and everything else. BEFORE you say they merged! We would get them confused they were so similar. Eventually the checkers closed, and where it used to be, theres a damn gas station. Years later, the Rally's we went to got shut down by the health department, apparently millions of roaches. It's a "Wing Stop" now. The only Rally's still around me are ones close to downtown birmingham, two in fact. I was shocked about a year ago, that the Walmart in Gardendale, AL had a checkers. Went inside and was amazed at the quality and service.
Birmingham area as well. Sounds like The Palisades. Guess you suffered like me when all the Rally's locations closed at start of 2019. Need to go to Gardendale Walmart.
Talladega, AL!! Didn’t know there was a Rally’s/Checkers still close by! The one closest to us in Anniston, AL closed but I’m not sure how long ago. Gotta check out the one in Gardendale. Thanks 🙏🏾
Those are 2 different companies, not related to each other and founded in different areas. Though I always found it interesting you can find locations of both, in Kentucky and Tennessee(Krystal moreso in TN, there used to be a few in KY but not as many nowadays) myself. Sometimes a very close distance away, between each other like in Nashville.
Those are both the same parent company. Ditto with Homegoods being within that same parent company, as well. IIRC I once read those 3 retailers are ran by the company that used to run another chain like Zayre before all were sold to the now defunct Ames, but I forget which retailer that company used to run many years ago.
How though if it's the exact same thing 🤔 that might be mind games slow down before you get yourself hustled ... 1.99 vs 3.99 for the exact same thing the world might eat you..🤣
Hi there! Another two companies that are tied together like this are T.J. Maxx and Marshalls (as well as Homegoods, Home Sense, and Sierra Trading Post). They're two companies that started separately but are now a part of the TJX companies. The difference between the two can be confusing! Thanks. x 💙❤️
True - you can actually find therm all in the same town. TJ Maxx and HomeGoods can be found in the same space - with a walkway between them. Because the Group purchases inventory from other retailers when they close locations - or even close altogether - you can score some steals that even Amazon doesn't have.
At college in Louisiana in the around 1990, we had a Rally's right off campus, near a lot of bars. We had lots of late night burgers and fries! They changed to Checker's before I graduated. Their was also a local chain called Fast Trak, that had the same double drive thrus and seasoned fries. They lasted a few years but then shut down.
Hungry Jack's is just what Burger King is called in Australia, as far as I know. On the video could anyway look at other comparisons between Hungry Jack's in Australia, and Burger King elsewhere,
I worked at a Rally’s in Virginia in 1991. They didn’t last too long here. My husband loved the bag of burgers. We have a Checkers about two hours away. That’s a nice Sunday drive.
And Ralph's in California right? They did a promotion with Jeff Goldblum recently and he went to a Ralph's, but it looked exactly the same as a Kroger it was trippy
Here in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) we have both. So the commercials and mailed coupons say both and have both logos on it. From about Richmond to VA Beach it's Rally's from Fredericksburg to Baltimore its Checkers. Interesting.
Could you do Dollar General? If I'm not mistaken it's the fastest growing retailer in the US and it's commonly considered to be a symptom of a town doing poorly when one moves in.
mom and pop stores should go out of business if they cant compete...its called capitalism... mom and pop stores usually make money off the back of minimum wage labor...
These things are everywhere in Virginia, and have been a long time. What makes them unique seems to be they are moving in where other retailers have dared not tread, particularly in small declining towns that have lost a lot of services, or more remote counties that have been long starved for retail.
Company Man Before the 1999 merger, what were some of the small differences between Checkers and Rally's? There had to be some, especially when both first started off.
The 1994-99 period was when the menus and suppliers were standardized between the chains. Rally's had seasoned fries which were adopted by Checkers. Checkers didn't serve shakes. Checkers had two sizes of beef patties, for a regualr hamburger and their signature "Big Buford". All burgers now use the same 3.5 oz patties. Rally's offered a sloppy joe variant barbeque-flavored loose meat type sandwich called "Rally-Q" which has been eliminated. Some Checkers markets offered onion rings which have been discontinued. Checker's did advertise, but mostly in print and youth-focused radio. They adopted some reworks of Rally's spots after 1994. Rally's was always an inescapable advertising presence on television and radio in all the markets they served, including Los Angeles where they had only two stores.
Stan Baker Thanks for the information. The Rally-Q sounds pretty good, as do onion rings. I know mergers like this can help companies compete overall but they also lose their identity too. I vaguely remember an ad for the "Big Buford" burger back in the 90s.
Honestly, their logos are so similar that if they just swapped the actual name on the sign of all the Rally's buildings to Checkers overnight (or whenever the least-busiest hours were), I'd doubt anyone would even notice. You'd get a few people go, "Wait, didn't that use to say Rally's on it? Oh well.....and proceed to drive-thru". They've done such a good preliminary job of unifying the menu, branding colors and style up to this point that the final switch should be relatively painless. They can also run a simple "Rally's is Checkers" campaign to help ensure the least amount of brand-identity confusion.
Albertsons is another one of those bigger than you think grocery chains. Never realized how many grocery brands they owned until I went to their Wiki page.
Lol.. Yeah if you dont know much about retail. Kroger is one of the largest grocers and private label companies in the U.S. and operate multiple different stores under various names etc.etc. Kroger is a giant
Fry's not the electronics version but the grocery store also belongs to Kroger , which brings up another idea for a video , Frys Electronics vs Fry's (the grocery store) are they the same ? I dont think they are but ...
There's an instance where Hellman's mayonnaise is called that in the eastern US while it's called Best Foods mayonnaise in the western US. You should look into it for a future video.
Hearing this story reminds me of a Michigan franchise that rose in a similar way: “Hot-n-Now”. They were cheap, drive-through only burger joints that had 30 cent hamburgers in under a minute. Rose during the 90s, then got bought by PepsiCo and totally mismanaged into oblivion. I think there’s one Hot-n-Now left on the west coast of Michigan.
We have both Checker's and Rally's in my area. The joke is that the Checker's are in the nice parts and Rally's are in the economically depressed parts. The truth is that the Rally's were here first and had an established customer base with brand loyalty. The Checker's locations were the newer stores serving new customers. Sounds like good business strategy to me.
illegalclown Yeah, when he mentioned that the Rally's locations had decreased I thought about the 3 I know about in my city. All older/economically depressed, surrounded by other chains that have since bailed.
Elliott Enriquez That's funny, I've seen one in Long Beach too. My local Rally's was removed around five or so years ago so Long Beach is probably the closest I can get to a Rally's.

THANK YOU. This question has plagued me since I was a kid, growing up in Ohio. We had both. And since the internet wasn't much of a thing yet, we couldn't exactly go online and do a side-by-side comparison. My parents and I wondered for YEARS, with them insisting there were some small differences that kept the two companies apart.
We had one of each in my town for a while. Rally's was first, then Checkers came in about 3 miles away. I do remember the entire Checkers building coming pre-made on the back of a flat bed, then hoisted by a crane and put down on the foundation. Checkers didn't seem to last 10 years, and the location is now a Taco Bell. Rally's continues to this day.
That’s interesting you say Checkers is mostly in the south and Rally’s in the Midwest. I live in Illinois and grew up going to Checkers. I’ve actually never seen a Rally’s around here.
Im also in Illinois, and never even HEARD of Rallys until watching this video. I've also never seen a Checkers in person, but at least I new they existed.

There used to be a Checkers in downtown Nashville, then it changed to Rallys, then back to checkers. Then after a bit I had that sign they use now, but it had checkers/rallys in the white name area. I remember seeing both throughout Nashville
Rally's fries are the best, but the location nearest me is halfway across town, so I always forget it exists. I had also completely forgotten that old yellow Rally's logo until you showed it, which was cool to see. So the other one I'm curious about is White Castle and Krystal. The burgers seem very similar.
Never had seen that old(and probably the original) Rally's logo, till this video. But it looks better for sure, than the 2 Rally's logos that succeeded it.
They're the same company. The reason they use the name Edy's back east is so they're not confused with Breyers . Dreyer's Ice cream started in Oakland Ca in 1928 on Grand ave. Breyers started in Philadelphia in 1866. Dreyer's invented Rocky Road ice cream
Hellmann's and Best Foods Mayonnaise. I live in the eastern US and from childhood I was always fascinated by the note on the back label of Hellmann's, "Known as Best Foods Mayonnaise west of the Rockies." Sure enough when I visited Denver as an adult (not west of the Rockies, but close enough), on the grocery store shelf was Best Foods Mayonnaise, with the note "Known as Hellmann's Mayonnaise east of the Rockies."
The situation involving the two supermarket chains branded as "Giant" (Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle) is worth covering. It's similar in some respects (formerly unconnected chains that now belong to the same parent company) and essentially the opposite in others (they've been kept separate and distinct, despite operating under the same name and bordering each other's geographic footprint -- purportedly because Giant-Landover is unionized and Giant-Carlisle is almost entirely non-unionized). Other interesting details include the relationship to Martin's (an alternative name for Giant-Carlisle, whose logo typeface it shares) and Stop & Shop (another sister chain, which shares Giant-Landover's logo typeface and an icon that also appears on store-brand products sold across all of these chains).
A few years back (probably more like 10-15) Rally's/Checkers was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and they did use both brands at their concession stands, even though Indianapolis is a Rally's location.
I noticed that when I moved out west. Same case with Dreyer's/Edy's ice cream. It's Edy's east of the rockies and Dreyer's west. Apparently this was to avoid brand confusion with Breyer's when that brand was not on the west coast. Also the shape of a stick of butter is different east and west of the rockies, long and thin in the east, short and wide on the west.
The "what about checkers and Rally's?" Comment section of this video was hilarious. Then it got old. Then it went on long enough to be hilarious again. I loved it.

Hey Company Man, love your videos. I was wondering if you could do a video on Boston Market. They used to be huge, but now not so much. Some have closed up near me, and the ones that are left I never see anyone in them so I'm curious at how the company might still be in business.
Sean Watson there like I think 4 Boston Markets in downtown Indianapolis. I’ve seen one in castleton, eastern indianapolis and one near Washington square.
It’s pretty simple to figure out what happened to Boston Market: The 2008 economic collapse Every restaurant chain that was marketed as “premium” fast food had a hard time as people’s disposable income was reduced. Companies that featured “cheap” food comparatively thrived for the exact same reason. It’s the reason that McDonalds and Burger King with their “dollar menus” did fine; while burger joints like Five Guys expansion halted. It’s the reason Subway $5 footlong excelled while $10 sub shops floundered. Taco Bell did okay while places like Chipotle lost popularity. You can see this throughout the entire fast food market as well as every other consumable market where there is a “cheap” vs “premium” option.
I definitely remember a Rally's being in Danville Ky, me and mom would go and eat there every other day since it was so good and the shakes were amazing. But for some reason, like at least 12 years ago, it vanished. Turned out the place the building was at didn't do well for anything that was there and they left, that same building was a taco place and some other few things possibly including a Krystal at one point if im not mistaken. Danville has a large crossroads on the south end of town, going south you would end up in Liberty, east goes to Stanford, north brings you to the center of the city where all the business and homes are and eventually leads to Lexington, and west will go around and into the industrial side of the city potentially leading to Harrodsburg or Perryville. If you went west on the crossroad, Rallys was right by the road a few hundred meters from the crossroads, beside a bank and in front of some shopping centers with Kroger and more smaller shops just further down. My idea for why Rally's closed there may have been the fact that the south of the city was where all the other restaurants were and there is a LOT of them: McDonalds is on the hill, Dairyqueen and Subway beside it, then a very strangely placed Kfc in front of Lowe's and beside Lowe's is a Cracker Barrel on the hill in front of Rally's, going west from where Rally's was is Applebees and Zaxby's then BurgerKing used to be across the road from McDs in the big Manor lot, O'Charlie's beside it, Fazoli's next door to BurgerKing, a pizza place in the manor itself which used to be a Cici's in that spot too, Wendys and JimmyJohns just a little further north, next door to Wendy's is potentially my fav restaurant in the town a combination A&W/LongJohnSilvers, then near Wendy's is Little Caesars, beside Little C is TacoBell, across from them is Pizzahut, go further up the road you find a pizzeria franchise called Giovanni's and a chinese restaurant called Wok-N-Go, and further is Sonic near some of the residences, waaaaay further down entering the main part of the city is Domino's and Lee's, in the city itself is a bunch of places like Grace Cafe, Tut's, Bluebird, Wilcher's, Burke's Bakery, and many others, then you got like 3 to 4 Guadalajara restaurants in close proximity, going east from the crossroads is what used to be a Shonney's, then Cattleman's Roadhouse and a Buffalo Wings and Rings, also south of Danville leaving the town is a big place called Cheddar's and further south in a tiny town called Junction City less than 3 miles away is a Hardee's. Oh, also Chick-Fil-A now brings a little food truck to the lot where Rally's used to be now. Yeah, Danville is somewhat a popular town in the center of the state where a lot of good food is. Rally's probably couldn't handle the pressure.
I’ve lived in Minnesota my whole life and have never heard of either of these food places. Never seen a commercial for either of these brands either. Thank you for teaching me about these/this company(s). :)
I'd love to see a video on Jack in the Box and their earlier identity crisis including their attempts to change the name of the chain a few times in the process :)
The Phoenix area had a lot of Rally's in the early nineties. Sadly they filed for bankruptcy and had to restructure closing some of their stores. Now there are a few rallies left in the Phoenix area. They were once everywhere but now they've been remodeled has Mexican fast food restaurants.
I love Rally's! I grew up going to the one by my old apartment complex and I went there last year and the fries still taste the same which made me happy because I love their fries
When I was at Ohio State in the early 90s, they had Snapps, which I loved. Eventually it became Rally's. Rally's is really good fast food, but the Snapps was just as good and had indoor seating.
They were both from Standard Oil; when SO got split up the various companies that were created each got to use the name "Standard Oil" in their region, such as Standard of Indiana or Standard of New Jersey, etc. As they all started to expand outside of their home areas they needed to have another name for places where another Standard already had rights to the Standard name, so they branded themselves as Chevron, Esso ("S-O") Amoco, etc. Eventually they all just dropped the Standard name and became their own brands. And then they started merging with each other again.
It was rally’s when I was little and then checkers came. One of the original rally’s locations was still around as checkers came into the picture but before then, the rally’s restaurants were disappearing one by one. The banana milkshake comes to mind when I think about rally’s.
From what I understand, It was named Edy's on the East Coast to avoid confusion with Breyer's which has it's roots in Pennsylvania. Oddly I think Breyer's sold nationally, So I guess confusion was ok for the West? 😛
Oooh! Checkers bought out a small regional chain in Michigan called Hot N’ Now in 2008, that was a big push for the company there and most of those locations were converted to checkers. A video on hot n now would be cool too
MegaThunder70 They're a fairly young fast food chain. Huge menu and big meals for a low price is their big thing. They have over 40 milkshakes, a $5 box where you get a main item with two "mini-entree" like sides, and a drink (their sweet tea is a 44 oz. "Huge Tea.") It's a very southern chain that is growing pretty rapidly, but I doubt it would be very successful outside the Southeast to be honest.
I'm from Chicago and was a kid when that happened...still remember my parents refusing to go there and saying how bad of a place it was. I'm in my mid 30s now and I've still never been to Jack in the Box nor can I think of any around the Chicagoland area. There might be some locations here but I can't recall seeing any.
I haven’t been to one of these places so until this video I always thought all the restaurants were called “Checkers & Rally’s” due to advertisements, I had no idea they were separate names.
It's nice to know Checker's/Rally's still exists. When I lived in Southern California, they closed many of their stores, at least all those convenient to me. We have none here in Arizona. I assumed they'd gone out of business.
In Springfield, IL we had both. They opened as Rallys, then changed to Checkers. Then they closed down for years then re-opened as Rallys and still open today.

T-bone is $3.99/lb. right now (many places charge almost that much for ground beef). I don't buy much other than meat there and I usually stock the deep freeze with whatever they have on sale.
I've had the frozen ones. The ones from the stores are even better, and their milkshakes are amazing too
Will Edwards I’ll have to find one on vacation sometime!
My walmart Also carries their fries. We have a Checkers but its a not out of the way for me to go to.
What about you talk about the history and rise of Walmart? I'm curious on how they got to where they are today.
Thanks for the fact joe smith
Hartselle AL here
Birmingham area as well.
Thanks 🙏🏾

Some fat guy advice though. Sonic's double cheeseburger is alarmingly similar to a Buford. And Popeye's fries are basically rally's fries.

Those are both the same parent company. Ditto with Homegoods being within that same parent company, as well. Hi there! Another two companies that are tied together like this are T.J. Maxx and Marshalls (as well as Homegoods, Home Sense, and Sierra Trading Post). They're two companies that started separately but are now a part of the TJX companies. The difference between the two can be confusing! Thanks. x 💙❤️
Ashley Glennan T.J. Maxx just simply bought out all the companies you mentioned, no real story behind them.

You need to do Kroger and all the other groceries that they own

Kroger > other grocery stores
And Ralph's in California right? They did a promotion with Jeff Goldblum recently and he went to a Ralph's, but it looked exactly the same as a Kroger it was trippy
Fun fact: Kroger owns Food 4 Less.
Like Fred Meyer's.
Yeah, go to any small town in America and you'll see Dollar General sitting there near the edge of town acting as the de facto convenience store.
These things are everywhere in Virginia, and have been a long time. What makes them unique seems to be they are moving in where other retailers have dared not tread, particularly in small declining towns that have lost a lot of services, or more remote counties that have been long starved for retail.

Your right I'm in Virginia also and their everywhere .

Company Man
Before the 1999 merger, what were some of the small differences between Checkers and Rally's?
Stan Baker
Thanks for the information. The Rally-Q sounds pretty good, as do onion rings. I know mergers like this can help companies compete overall but they also lose their identity too. I vaguely remember an ad for the "Big Buford" burger back in the 90s.
Checkers still has the Big Buford. Looks good too. checkers.com/food/burgers/big-buford/
Rally's was better, now the burgers suck and are just cheap crap.
bruh
As someone else mentioned, its time for a video about Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Thanks....
That's what happened in my area. They remodeled the Rally's into a Checkers and no one noticed for a while because it had the same motif.
you need to do a video on Kroger, they're bigger than they seem!
Kroger is my main grocery store and whenever I visit California I shop at "Ralph's" which is their version of Kroger.

Thank you! We just had a Checkers open up here in Palm Coast Fl, gonna check out out thanks to this video!
Long Beach?
Nope, lower Michigan.

I live in the eastern US and from childhood I was always fascinated by the note on the back label of Hellmann's, "Known as Best Foods Mayonnaise west of the Rockies."
Sure enough when I visited Denver as an adult (not west of the Rockies, but close enough), on the grocery store shelf was Best Foods Mayonnaise, with the note "Known as Hellmann's Mayonnaise east of the Rockies."
David Levy Maryland represent!
You should do a video on Kroger and Ralph's. It's a similar situation to this but a grocery store.
Kroger Owns Ralph's. They're a brand of the Kroger Company just like Smith's, Good 4 Less and Fry's grocery stores (not the same as Fry's electronics)
I would actually say the opposite!
A few years back (probably more like 10-15) Rally's/Checkers was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and they did use both brands at their concession stands, even though Indianapolis is a Rally's location.
What about Hellmann's and Best Foods?
Yeah!!
Majoofi I've heard that East of the Rockies, it's Hellman's, and West of the Rockies, it's best foods.
Don't quote me, but that's what I've heard.
I noticed that when I moved out west. Same case with Dreyer's/Edy's ice cream. It's Edy's east of the rockies and Dreyer's west. Apparently this was to avoid brand confusion with Breyer's when that brand was not on the west coast. Also the shape of a stick of butter is different east and west of the rockies, long and thin in the east, short and wide on the west.
read somewhere that the recipes are slightly different.

It’s pretty simple to figure out what happened to Boston Market: The 2008 economic collapse
Every restaurant chain that was marketed as “premium” fast food had a hard time as people’s disposable income was reduced.

I was always fascinated at the west coast / east coast differences in gas station names, such as Chevron/Standard and Exxon/Esso.

@@kyleflounder9783 We just had one open in Montgomery AL. I thought it was just a new local restaurant. Might have to try it out.
I used to work for the company that provides checkers/rally’s tech support. Was always super fun to have to deal with the similar differences 😂
Another similar one is Tom Thumb and Randall's they are both in Texas with different names from City to City, but are exactly the same
Both seem to be copies of Safeway, having lived in three areas with the three stores.
Video idea. You can do a dark story on how there are no Jack in the Box restaurants in Chicago because of what happened to that little girl.....
I remember Jack in the Box in Chicago, but I never heard the story about the girl.
David W; None in my state of Maryland.
please elaborate
@@wannabeeyour Look up e-coli and Jack in The Box. From what I remember she died from e coli found in a tainted burger. Made many people sick as well.
I’ve been waiting my whole life for the answer to this.
I haven’t been to one of these places so until this video I always thought all the restaurants were called “Checkers & Rally’s” due to advertisements, I had no idea they were separate names.
Anyone else hungry?

Yes, it's what I was expecting, but it's still good to hear some of the facts behind them
It's nice to know Checker's/Rally's still exists.
When I lived in Southern California, they closed many of their stores, at least all those convenient to me.
We have none here in Arizona. I assumed they'd gone out of business.
There's a Rallys in Tempe.
There's also Hellmann's and Best Foods, and Breyers/Dreyers (Edy's).
In Springfield, IL we had both. They opened as Rallys, then changed to Checkers. Then they closed down for years then re-opened as Rallys and still open today.
If I had to completely give up Junk food. I would Still eat Checkers🍔
They may not be the cheapest anymore. But it's SO Good👌
Especially the fries 🍟
PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON CHI-CHI'S!!! 🌮🥙🌯
Candie Jo what's Chi-Chi's?
That would be a really good video
Mexican-Restaurant chain that used to be in the United States. They were a pretty popular place but ultimately a massive Hepatitis-A outbreak shut them down.
I read this and was surprised. Didn't they die forever ago
OH GOD I REMEMBER CHI-CHI'S
I used to go to that Checkers in 1986. I loved it.
I call it Checker-Rally’s
The checker flag at the end of the rally. :-)
