Its the only way to go these days, it makes polishing dark colors so easy. and as I mentioned if you cant justify spending $500+ on the Rupes Bigfoot then you can use an orbital palm sander with a polishing pad on it.

Black is a real bitch to get the swirls out, that orbital polisher is awesome for it, if you have an orbital sander you can get a foam pad with a velcro back that goes straight on it then use that for a final polish and swirl remover.

Layton Dilley 3m is so old school. there are so many better compounds nowadays. i cant believe anyone can use 3m. i have a few bottles someone gave me that ive been trying to use up but they are just crap i cant stand using them. way overpriced as well.

What speeds do you use? I work at an autobody shop and we're having problems with swirls man.. Our combo is a 3M 3-step system that we can't change.
We use woolpads for cutting on light colored cars - white foam pad for cutting on dark colored cars.
I've been experimenting with speeds of 1200-1800, with cutting. And 1000-1400 with polishing...
It seems like it'll look perfect when we're done. Then once it goes to detail for a wash, the holograms come back. Its almost like the step 2 isn't strong enough to take out the swirls from the previous step.. We can't switch up the chemicals either (VOC laws). Any advice would help. Thanks

The 3m foam pad with the number 3 blue polish is still a TAD aggressive on softer paint. Also, lighting is key. Try using a sun-gun when polishing black paint. Also, make sure your foam pads are SUPER SUPER SUPER clean, and the panel is SUPER clean between steps.

    • @alexotis9281
      @alexotis9281 11 місяців тому

We use compound on wool for 1st step then compound white foam for 2nd step then polish on grey foam then ultrafine 3m polish on blue foam pad all done on 1800 rpm works great for the production shop I work in just takes longer because we use the most steps on black hope this helps

I personally can't stand using the 3m system anymore, now that I've been using it for 3 years. It's old tech. The EX compound work good. I don't like their pads or final polishes.

That's like a mirror, even better the buff!.
    I got ripped off.
Just got my 81 Camaro Z28 back from paint a couple months ago.
I did the body work. They then layed on a heavy coats of primer and then block sanded it. They checked it over and did some touch ups here and there. They then primed it again and block sanded it out.
They then painted it base/clear gm lemans blue.
They took 4.5 months but told me that it would only take 1.5 months.
It turned out all orange Peely.
    There fee was C$5000 Canadian.
They want another $1000 to wet sand and buff it out.
    That a fair price?
I'll be doing the cut n polish myself now.
