    Scott, anatomy of Underworld songs is one of what interests me the most in synth electronics. Thank you, very interesting and exciting!
    As beginner in synths sound design I’d like to see recreations of their separate synth sounds from different compositions on real analog or VA synths.

    Great vibe still sounding fresh in 2024 from a great Welsh musical duo beautifully reconstructed. Excellent work!

      Thank you!!! Their work sounds deceptively simple, but when you dig into it, it turns out to be incredibly complex.

    If you want more hands on control without having to rely on the touch screen, you can use the pads. For this particular song, there are two ways you can go about it since it's so simple. You could set up the pads to launch the individual patterns. That works as long as you have no more than 4 sounds and no more than 4 patterns per sound, so only for very simple songs. For this song you could just play the 5th sound with the keys and it works :)
    The other way, which works for a bit more advanced songs, is to use the pads to launch groups. You can have up to 16 groups so you can have a lot of combinations of patterns, but you can also combine that with muting and unmuting tracks in the mixer section, which is essentially the same as launching and stopping the patterns

    Fantastic Scott, I share your passion for Underworld. Gonna hit my F8 tonight and have a go at building this track myself. I've been messing around with Ableton for too long. Always enjoyed building tracks using the Fantom sequencer, keeps it very simple. Great job 👌more of this please.... subscribed 👍

    Cool man. Is this akin to what Rick Smith is doing on stage during a live show or is he just "mixing" pre-recorded stems from their albums?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Рік тому +2

      I have spent a bunch of time trying to figure that out. From what I can tell, it's a hybrid mix. It's far more than just playing stems, although that is part of it - he has many tracks that are stems or stem segments and loops that he selects and mixes in and out on that giant SSL console. However, there is a performance aspect as well, which is why every show is a bit different. For instance, when they play Rez, the underlying motif is clearly a MIDI track triggering a synth (they used to have a Nord on stage, now I suspect it's all soft synths) as he often slows it down so much that you can hear the individual notes plucked out of the very complex sequence.

    I must admit TR-REC is a very nice feature of Fantom, definitely something I would like to have on Montage. Please do some similar video to this for Montage/MODX...

    Hello, thank you SOOOOOOOO much for this video, if you have time would you be able to show the chord chart for the chords at about 10:16 - the inversions are a bit fiddly... Thank you

    I love the Fantom 7. I've been using it for two years. The only thing I miss is that you can't make your own arpeggios, which is possible in Montage, although Step Recording is suitable for making arpeggios, but if Roland could fix it in an update so that it can be saved to a specific key and then played from a key, it would be perfect. The sequencer is simple and easy to use. Technically, there are similarities compared to Montage's sequencer, because here, too, you can connect 8 parts, which can be arranged as you like, and then in the end, this will become the final song. This is also the case with Montage, but there the 8 Scenes are connected by a Scene Chain to create the final song. One thing Montage solved better, namely the maximum 256 Measures option, which in the case of Fantom is 64 Measures. That's why it doesn't work as a linear sequencer, but it all depends on what kind of song you want to make. It's less effective for jazz and classical music, but that's not the kind of music I make. The KBD SW Group is also a good thing, but it would be even better if the sequencer could automatically step my Split and Layer settings saved on the PAD buttons, and not have to press the PAD buttons manually. This Montage can be implemented with the various Scene settings, so that for a given Performance, I switch sounds on and off, as well as save other split settings, which are switched by the Scene Chain while the song is playing. This would be good for Fantom as well.

    Very cool. Have you ever had the opportunity to see them live? They're incredible. I saw them live in Central Park in NYC in 2005 and it was awesome!
    I've recently been listening to their stuff again (also one of my favourite bands) and have been amazed by how simple complexity drives most of their biggest tracks. Usually it's just a hook like the chord riff in Dark Train and a few underlying elements, with lots and lots of repetition until it's being drilled into your head.
    I'd love to have this in a MIDI file so I could play with it on my own.

      True, and I thought about doing this, but it would be a little less obvious on the video what I was controlling on and off. That said, in a true live situation, I'd use the pads for sure, as you saw the difficulty I had triggering them on the screen (and that was probably the third take I had at doing it!)
