Herb! That was one of the first national marketing campaigns I remember experiencing first hand. I didn't realize until just a few years ago what a flop it was.

Your very first commercial shown was "Where's Herb?" That campaign was a colossal failure!
For those who don't remember, the point of the campaign was for people to be on the lookout for Herb, who would appear at random Burger Kings nationwide. Anyone who spotted Herb would win $5000. In addition, customers were instructed to say "I'm not Herb" when ordering, or if their name was Herb, to say "I'm not the Herb you're looking for" to get a Whopper for 99 cents.
The obvious problem with the campaign: how were you supposed to spot Herb if, as the commercial showed, NOBODY KNEW WHAT HE LOOKED LIKE?! This no doubt led to a lot of annoyed men at Burger King being asked if they were Herb. Second, the prize money was a paltry sum for a grand prize, even in 1985. Third, by the time Burger King did put a face to the name during the 1986 Super Bowl, it was too late. Customers had already lost interest. To make matters worse, a 15-year-old boy who spotted Herb in Alabama was denied the prize money because he was just shy on the minimum age requirement, which led to his parents complaining to their representative and Burger King's actions being declared consumer fraud.
So yeah, not exactly your best foot forward on this one.

I love the V-8 commercial! Then again, I love anything that has a cute fuzzy in it (there there are some exceptions).

Music for the NBC "Love is Not Silent" promo is a portion of the Hagood Hardy instrumental song called "The Homecoming" (the first I found out about it was learning on the SouthernMedia News Music Search Archive site that my local ABC affiliate, WVEC in Norfolk, VA; used the song as closing music for the Friday 6:00 p.m. newscast).
Regarding the Opium spot; surprised the name wasn't changed by this point considering this was well into the "War on Drugs" (though this was far from that perfume's lone link to controversy)

Hmmn...the new version of the YSL Opium perfume is called "Black Opium"...that sounds kind of controversial too like a street drug name.

I only ever heard of Chun King from the Strong Bad E-mail "Date".
"I'm twying to order the Chun King!"

Chun King had a line of canned "chow mein " with vegetables on the bottom and a small can of sauce attached on top ; you mixed together and served over rice or crispy noodles, very popular in the late 70s and early 80s- you can still get it under the LaChoy brand, but I wouldn't. I don't know if I didn't know any better as a kid, but I tried it recently out of a sense of nostalgia, and it was truly awful. Like not finish it and throw it out awful.

The black guy in the Armed Forces commercial is Corey Glover, lead singer of the rock group Living Colour ("Cult of Personality").

The eyepatch really confused me when I saw that, I guess it's a very old advertising campaign: i.imgur.com/KvbWIZw.jpg

All of the bumpers here are of old movie stars of the 20's and 30's, it's not a tribute to any one person.
