There's a story comic and impersonator Rich Little told about being somewhere the same time Regan was there. The press was there and wanted to ask some questions, but Regan was running late. He told Rich, "You do a pretty good me, why don't you answer the questions?" Rich did, and Regan left. Of course, Rich was answering with jokes and satire of Regan. After a minute or so, he heard something behind him. He took a quick glance and saw Regan in a doorway listening and trying to stifle his laughs.
Can you imagine how El Cheeto would respond to a roast like this? Rickles with the rapid fire barbs about Reagan being dumb...Cheeto Bonito would rudely attack Rickles and say that Rickles was stupid and, get super passive aggressive and, completely NOT be able to handle it in stride as being a friendly and, non-threatening roast by friends...as much as I was NOT a Reagan fan at the time of his Presidency...he is an exponentially better and, more professional, President... How unbelievably low have our expectations fallen...
More selective memory in operation. He likely didn’t understand the humor, especially later in life. His recession was self-induced, and his science understanding is equaled only by Trump. And let’s not forget the Iran-Contra issue.

@Truthfears Guilty , I didn't say always... I just said there were celebs who were who and what they said and appeared. There always were those who presented something, usually because it was a shtick. Dean didn't drink like that, neither did Foster Brooks. Jack Benny wasn't THAT cheap, and Don Rickles was a wonderful and loving man to all who knew him. There were those who had to keep "private things private" too, of course.
I only learned about 'roasts' a couple of years ago - this one is now my favourite! Watching them laughing so hard made me laugh even more. How refreshing it was to watch a black man enjoy a good laugh and not consider it 'racist' when everyone laughed with him! Ronald Reagan was a good sport and a great man. He had a beautiful wife too
California has lived off that reputation for 40 years...it isnt true now anymore, overseas they still know it as it once was it carries that reputation. I would never move to CA if my life depended on it now.
Reagan a great man being roasted before he went on to do great things for our country. Thank you President Reagan for being the greatest president of the 20th century.
Phishean: So true! I lived in Sacramento when Reagan was Governor the first time, back when we were proud of California, which was once the 2nd richest State in the Union, the best in so many ways -- no more, now it's 10th or lower, their Governor, Jerry Brown, has ruined that Golden State, and so many of us who were native Californians have long ago moved away. Brown has and continues to queer any chances of that State being great again. They'll probably have 3-D, smell-vision, special effects you can see, hear, and feel all around you, that will probably take the place of movies and television as we know it today. Even agricultural companies are giving up and some are moving to the fertile valleys of South Africa to raise their crops! Guess they'll take a chance on the hippos eating their crops and the elephants trampling them, rather than having them dry up and blow away! No, California is no longer the Golden State. Even smart Hollywood citizens (at least the older, smarter ones) are moving and making their primary home away from California and only come to CA if their movie is being made there.

Reagan was funny as hell. He always had a joke up his sleeve. I suspect he hired comedians to write for him sometimes, but he executed the jokes so well, he owned them.
Ronald Reagan was one of the best -- admirable in so many ways, and he had such a great sense of humor! Good man, good husband, good actor, and a good President. RIP, RR. It is fun to watch and listen to the comedy, but I also feel bad that just about every one of those great comedians to got up to speak are gone now, along with Reagan, except maybe Mark Spitz, who is about 78 now if I'm not mistaken. The humor may have insinuated a thing or two that was a bit ribald but no one ever said even one 4-letter word -- just good clean fun (something we are very shy on today) and it is refreshing! Bravo to all the old comics who could make us laugh anyway!
Really??.Diferent strokes, different folks..It's humorous no doubt. But gut busting?I dont know..It is one hell of a brilliant time period piece though..
Reagan was neither. He wasn't a bad actor nor president, but be totally honest. He held no candle to the greats of either business. No where near as good of a manipulative bastard as the other politicians and actors were and are.
I don’t think that it has to do with being “thin skinned”, but more so with, “I’m sick and tire of your shit, stop putting me down” and now it can be said, while back then you just had to take it. This is my humble opinion.
Deanna Kramer I bet he was really laughing as his people negotiated with Iran not to release the US hostages before the 1980 election. I bet he was laughing when they illegally sold weapons to Iran then funneled the money to buy guns which they illegally sent to the Nicaraguan rebels, even though most of the guns wound up in the hands of the drug cartels. I bet he was laughing during the first 5 years of the AIDS crisis, during which he didn’t mention anything about it even once.
This was just a year before Jack Benny died. One of the all time biggest stars, perhaps the biggest star ever on these roasts (and yes including Sinatra). The biggest radio star ever, and his program successfully transitioned to television and ran from the early 1950s to the mid 60s.
Being funny has nothing to do with the era in which people live. Consider "The Office" and "30 Rock", the two best sitcoms of all time - both of them of this modern era.
What a terrible president. Union busting, illegal wars financed by CIA drug money, deregulation that haunts us today, trickle down economy that never worked, staff full of crooks ( like Trump) and the ability to ignore facts if they conflicted with his 'beliefs' Just a B grade actor that fooled a lot of Americans - so sad.

That was one of the funniest Celebrity Roasts I have heard in a long time. Such a much loved man was Ronald Reagan. To bad there arent any more like hime.
Ronald Reagan was without a doubt the greatest president of my lifetime. One of my great disappointments is that I never had the chance to vote for him. I was only 16 in 1984. I voted for George Bush in 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2004. I suppose that must have been similar to voting for FDR once upon a time...
@cheetah Trump is different, not nearly as classy or reflective....Trump is a warrior, to stand up to the crazed leftists these days we had to have Trump. Trump has surprised the hell out of everyone including the left who vastly underestimated him.
Now this is just the funniest thing I have seen in years. When stars were real stars, politicians were not offended by any little thing. could never imagine Trump doing something like this. He will cry and walk off. Reagan just laughed all the way and to see Dean Martin in tears is awesome. Reagan gave as good as he got. Plus he also can take the piss out of himself and other politicians. God bless Reagan as he was a real man and great American. As to Dean Martin he was a true star, TV, singer, actor, movies, stage he was a grue great. This is when America was great and looking at these guys you can see why they made America great. Thanks for uploading this a real treat.
That was DAMN AWESOME!!!!! LOVED IT!!! And feel extremely thankful to actually seen this now in 2019! Because I'm 45yrs old the only recollection of Ronald Reagan I have was from the age of about 5 or 6 watching him run for President with my beloved Grandfather. He was a strong supporter of Regan. My Grandfather died a year or 2 after that so I don't believe he was alive for Regan's entire Presidency, but I was. Today, unfortunately Politics has become increasingly nasty which is very unfortunate & sad. Especially comparing this roast to that of Sarah Sanders which was ugly & just mean. Yet Sarah Sanders endured it like a lady. Whether you agree or disagree with President Trump, I think Ronald Reagan and everyone at his roast would be mortified!!! I served my country proudly. So as a Veteran who volunteered to protect our country REGARDLESS OF ANYONE'S POLITICAL BELIEFS, I'm disgusted with how our current President TRUMP has been treated and DISGUSTED w/the political divide in our country now. I just wanted to express my beliefs in what I see happening since Obama's election, both Clinton's corruption that's claimed many lives, President Trump trying his damndest to steer this country in the right direction & how Former President Regan must see what's going on after all his hard work for our nation seems to be for nothing. President Ronald Reagan is someone to be revered & herald as one of THE WORLD'S GREATEST LEADERS!!!!!
I feel lucky to have had RR in my life. He totally changed my way of thinking. A man like him might come along once in a generation, IF we are that fortunate...I hope our kids have a leader like him in their lives.
This is a really cool video. The great actors & actresses & audience may not have known they were in the presence of one of the great presidents. Maybe they knew? Great video either way.

@Slavic Soldier No, I will not respect a man whose administration sold missiles to Iran to raise money to pay for covert operatives in Nicaragua who supported a rebel group that raped nuns. End of story.

Loved olde Ronnie....voted for him twice.
If you had voted for him 3 times, we wouldn't have had Carter. LOL
I wish we would have voted for him 3 times, then I could have had the privilege of voting for him twice like kempoguy. Wasn't old enough the first time, but still enjoyed him as president in my youth. I don't think it's possible to ever have one like him as president ever again! :(
These guys are real funny ... nothing now can compare to them
Reagan has a great sense of humor I'll give him that, solid President
Doug Smith Great minds think alike. Our lowered standards can only be met by Lord Marmalade.
@@samuelsmith5773 you and Doug might wanna watch the roast of Donald Trump then. He took the insults with a smile and dished out some decent jabs. We'll come back from the virus too by the way.
Phyllis Diller...Ronnie, when you get to be President someday, and I think you will......Quite the prediction that came true.
That is because, back then, there were celebrities who actually were what they said they were.

He had a beautiful wife too
This was the good old day when Ronald Regan made California the "Golden State"!
California has lived off that reputation for 40 years...it isnt true now anymore, overseas they still know it as it once was it carries that reputation. I would never move to CA if my life depended on it now.
Under Ronald Reagan's watch, the USA was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Corporation. He was a major puppet/actor with no power of his own.

The only wealth is in Hollywood and Silicon Valley, and the heads of those companies live in Seattle or Utah or Idaho -- NOT California, and many can work from home with all the latest advanced technology; you don't have to be "at the office" -- since your office is at home.
Anyway, movies in the theater will be a thing of the past in a few years, since most people will have theaters in their homes, IF they are interested in movies.
Too much whining. simply say Mr. Reagan is great, then hang up the phone.

I think I finally figured out his charm, he has laughing eyes
That's true - and always, always smiling
Deanna Kramer laughing eyes I like that one
Yes he does and a great big American heart.
Deanna Kramer it was his voice to something very welcoming about it
Reagan was such a great sport!
This was just a year before Jack Benny died. One of the all time biggest stars, perhaps the biggest star ever on these roasts (and yes including Sinatra). The biggest radio star ever, and his program successfully transitioned to television and ran from the early 1950s to the mid 60s.
