This is WHY I don't visit BÙI VIỆN street anymore - Saigon, Vietnam 🇻🇳
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Bùi Viện, or the backpacker street, is a popular tourist spot for many people visiting Saigon, Vietnam. Unfortunately, this attracts a lot of problems as well. After living in Vietnam for 7 years, this is the main reason I stopped going down to this street.

I am planning a 6 month trip to Vietnam right now. I'm 41 and this will be my first solo trip. I know it's a little old to start but I am so excited to learn all about your beautiful country
Never too old. I hear of men in their 50s going for the first time.
Are you crazy?? No way is it too old to start, your only 41.
Best of luck!
You need to join a travel forum before doing this, my advice to you, as Phuc said, as a Vietnamese sometimes I still have to be careful when using my money for something. Transport, food, reservation, everything is available on the phone app will be good . Good luck love from Vietnam
You will love it!
I stopped visiting Bui Vien street when visiting Saigon too. Doesn't matter if you speak Vietnamese, people will still try to scam you and pressure you to buy things/services you don't want. Same in Ben Thanh. Danang is a better city overall to live in to be honest. People there are friendlier and far fewer scammers.
I really enjoy Danang ✅
Danang is great. All personal preference though, a little small for me. I think Hanoi is best.

HN, the people aren’t honest too…😡
if You aren’t their locals people… You will get the lofty price tag for merchandise..😡😡…
@@canadian1445 hanoi is the worst. People super selfish

Stayed for 3 months in district one just one square from the market to have a grasp about how it is living in Vietnam around 2019, it was really annoying walking at any tourist areas, lots of people offering stuff or may be trying to scam you. After a couple of weeks I started to go a bit far from this regions and everything was better, no scammers, truly friendly people, much more cheaper to shop and eat. It is what I was looking fore, know how the locals live. Loved the experience and I should be back when this nightmare eases.
Understood. I was very lucky to have settled close to the airport for the last 7 years. Central D1 is like an errand trip for me, but would never want to live there.
@@phucmapvlog Sure dude, found really nice places to live in Saigon just out of D1
5/ khu Phan xích Long quận Phú Nhuận
6/ khu chung cư miếu nổi quận Bình Thạnh
7/ đường D2 quận Bình Thạnh gần trường Đại học ngoại thương.
8/ đường Trường Sa quận Phú Nhuận
9/ khu Văn thánh quận Bình Thạnh.
10/ đường Thảo điền quận 2
This happens in all major tourist sites in most of the 3rd world: Cancun, Bangkok, Bali, etc. So is nothing new.
Nevertheless, the guy was probably looking to practice his English with Westerners that he haven’t seen in 3 months after Directive-16, so is understandable. But one must be careful regardless given the lack of income lately.
@@warrendarable Sure, I'm Brazilian, Saigon looked amazingly safe to me :-)
Great to see Saigon getting back to normal. As always, love your videos and updates from Vietnam. Be safe.
Knowing that you are already here for 7 years, I'm still in awe how well you understand Saigon and our culture.
Funny how you're dividing things between "us" and "them"...

@@nr655321 ?
I spent vacations in HCMC from 2003 and a long 2 year stint 2006-2008 teaching English. Loved it. Amazing how much Bui Vien and other areas have changed. I always wanted to return to Vietnam but now being medically retired and over 50 years old, that makes getting visas to stay in Vietnam pretty much unattainable (and no I do not want to end up having to live in Vietnam on a tourist visa doing border runs each month - if that system returns). So I ended up in Thailand as one of a few more retirement friendly places.
Thanks for the video Brandon. Stay safe and keep cycling 🚴♂️.
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for this update on Saigon now. I'm living in Hué and come to Saigon a few times a year. So weird to know it before, seen it since the pandemic and so good to see the opening of this horrible and beautiful city!
Happy to help, more coming soon

Hi Phúc Mập ! You're the best, get through 4 months lockdown, still fine and still living in Saigon, not run back to the States, you must really love Vietnam and/or your wife.👍
Yes, I love both of them enough to stay
I have met some very interesting people on Bui Vien street both good and bad but its always wise to be extra cautious around that area
It's even worse because most of the people in that area are intoxicated
1 year living in Saigon, I never had any problems except for my first day here: I was on a motorbike driving in Bình Tân district with my phone out and another bike came from behind and grabbed my phone. We played a tug a war with the phone until I won. Somehow I had the stronger grip. Other than that, never had a problem.

only one skill to survive in SG is the fact that you should keep your belongings secretly like you hide your budget from your wife lol
Seven years, and I was only pickpocketed once up north. I’ve had a lot of friends get phone stolen on the side of the road, but I’ve managed to stay cautious about my belongings.

I'd would do the same thing you did in that situation ! Living here for 7 years give you the good reflexes on the street. Good to see you on your bike and vlogging again !
Thanks pal 🤙
Visited Saigon multiple times back in 2019 and it’s crazy how you don’t see anyone out walking at all! Like it was normal people would throw themselves to cross the street in that city
It's slowly recovering, but still won't be the same for awhile

Thanks for showing me Tân Bình. I used to live there for, nearly since I was born to my 17th birthday. I moved to district 7 2 years ago and tbh it changed a lot. I still remember the Lotteria on the Cách mạng tháng 8 street and it was removee on your video 😂 anyways hope you do well and keep up the good work

It’s a good thing to see
nice slice of life vid. definitely been missing VN. hope to be able to make it back soon. as for Bui Vien, definitely a lot of shady characters, but I noticed it's all over VN. wrong place, wrong time type of situation
Hopefully you can make it back soon enough
First year I was in Viet Nam in 2016 I was staying at the Khach San Lux on Le Than Ton. I had been over on Bui Vien all night and was going to walk back at around 1am. Walked part of the way and an independent bike guy talked me into riding. Got to the Hotel, discovered I had nothing smaller that 500k VND. So I gave it to him after I was off the bike. He tried to run off with the loot, but I was too quick for him. I grabbed the bike and threw it down, got my money back. No he didn't get paid anything..👍😂
Crazy story
They have been trying that trick with newly arrived tourists all the time.
I haven’t been back in Vietnam since 1980. Everything looks the same now in Saigon like before 1975. I really enjoy your videos and please don’t try to lose weight . I like you just the way you are now Phúc mập . Keep up the good works
Thanks for watching! I still have videos from all over VN to release
17:55 the guy thought you're a tourist, tried to ask you something, just talk back vietnamese to him, like that he will know you are almost vietnamese as he, then no more harassing.
Nothing like a little cruise on the canal! Great video my man!
Appreciate it!
Good to see you still in VN , take care and enjoy
love to see you do more videos next month for Christmas 🎄,New Year and Chinese New Year in phố đi bộ Nguyễn Huệ -Phúc

When a stranger pulls up and tells you “stop here”, run.
makes sense to me
This is especially common in that street, Bùi Viện street tends to have the highest rate of pickpockets in the city.
I know that’s a little bit foreshadowing but I heard that before some of the locals and international people got the issue there.
Chạy xe đạp dễ gặp cảnh này lắm. Trước mình đi xe đạp gần dịp tết gặp 1 ông kêu ổng là dân nghiện, đòi mình dừng xe và có ý xin tiền mình luôn.

Damn that crazy that bui vien has turned that way. I used to always live on bui vien when i went back to vn and never had an issue. I guess times have changed. Quan 1 is looking so foreign to me now. I havent been there for almost 5 years. Maybe its almost time for me to go back. Hope you are doing well.
I enjoyed Bui Vien in 2014-2015, but the tricks got old real quick
after lockdown initially, there are many robbers, so i think you should be careful them ( sorry i'm not good at english)
That's right. Im Vietnamese but i also feel very annoying when people try to scam and make you buy something. Uhh it also happened in Da Lat. One tip for all you guys from other countries travel to VN, dont let anybody try to make you buy things. It's very expensive, especially strawberries in Dalat
Great video, it was like a trio down memory lane seeing some of the sights again.
How are your tyres in Saigon much problerm with road debris? I live in Bangkok and have been thinking about a bike I really miss cycling
Glad you liked it. This is why I opted for a mountain bike. I use to have a bike with skinny tires in the US, but it wouldn’t fly here
Thank you Phuc! I have been in Bui Vien when I was small over 40 years ago. Now, i cannot recognize it.
Thanks for the tour👍🏼

You’ve got more patience. I usually don’t even begin to talk to people who just start an unnecessary conversation with me. Just ignore and a few seconds later they move on.
That's rude man....
@@paoloc3318 it's not rude when it's UNNECESSARY CONVERSATIONS
@@fencopauline when people approach you you cannot just ignore them .... That is insulting and disrespectful behaviour when you ignore someone....
Hence the “Have a nice day” 3x 😅
@@paoloc3318 You may be right, but at some stage of living somewhere you develop a filter for when people are there to sell you something (fake sunglasses, prostitutes, drugs, alcohol) or are actually there to create a meaningful connection. I would also argue it's rude to distract people in traffic and/or interrupt a private discussion between friends at a restaurant.
It's unfortunate really, scammers and robbers exist everywhere that have Civilization, this one with denser population of people further increase the chances of one being robbed.
I severely dislike the way stealing almost became common now with people taking advantage of others insecurity to get what they wanted.
Nowhere in a major US city are you guaranteed multiple approaches like this, and on a motorcycle/ scooter/ bike no less. Even with our chocolate population. Most you'll get is hustled into buying a garbage rap CD if you don't have the will power to say no. This is on another 3rd world level.
