I feel like while we have all heard similiar RnB tracks in the current day, something about Normani’s voice and stylistic decisions really sets her apart from the other girls. It is impressive to have a unique voice in a heavily populated genre.
While her “mm ah mm ah” and viva in Wild Side may seem random, I really think it may be a unique and cool way to introduce accented notes and syncopations similiar to jazz scatting. I think as she continues she will develop this into a signature of her songs. I am really excited because I haven’t heard an artist do that since Young Thug.
People holding her to releasing an album like she done already dropped 15 projects are a ki to me. This was her debut album. And it was a very cohesive body of work. I don’t think it’s perfect but I do feel like it’s a stronger debut than some of the other new artist we’ve seen release projects in the last few years. Everybody is playing it on social media.
I think these critics mostly come from”I wanted motivation” fans. Normani is more Waves, Fair, Love lies, Wild Side of and sound aka RnB! Normani wants to be urban because she is urban! She’s inspired by Black women before her time. She wants to be on BET and Soul Train. I love that for her
I acc liked dopamine, I had low expectations ngl never really cared for her music, but she really surprised me. Her layered vocals overall were the standout, and damn the songs were smoooth. There were deffo skips on the album fs, candy paint, big boy, BUT all urs, lights on and insomnia are my faves
My favorite tracks are "Still", "Lights On", "Distance", "Insomnia" and "Take My Time. I love "Insomnia" because of what Brandy did with the backgrounds and the vocal stacking. "Lights On" was her sensual Janet Jackson moment. "Take My Time" gave me early 2000's pop vibes. Normani was paying homage to her Houston, Texas roots with the Mike Jones' reference on "Still". The version of "Candy Paint" on the album was different from the version that was released. Normani added more to it.
Normani has a technically strong singing voice, but it often lacks emotional depth and personality. The first three songs on her album felt quite boring. She should steer clear of moody R&B and focus on upbeat pop or sultry R&B enhancing her sound effects, which suit her style better. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to listen to what her fans want. Overall, the album was disappointing.
It feels like you didn’t want to like it but didn’t have a choice because it’s so good. This album is better than ALL the crap put out today!!!! 10/10 Y’all born in the late 90s and 2000s really don’t know music it seems.
For those saying this doesn't justify the wait must also keep in mind she had bigger issues she was dealing with outside of providing music for an ungrateful and tasteless audience 🙂
I thought the album was ok. Insomnia was the only song I really liked besides Wild Side of course. To be honest, I don’t really feel like this album was worth the long wait. That’s just me though.
My first listen I found it underwhelming but after stepping back from the thought of what I thought normani was going to sound like. my second listen was way more enjoyable enjoyable and I love the album it’s a Story work of art now she just needs the push and she can lead the whole the early 2000s rnb sound renaissance like dua and The Weeknd did with the disco pop sound.
@@str8faxx yeah, you were definitely born in the 2000s. You only know today’s mediocrity. Embrace Normani so you can have an introduction to REAL music artistry.
The lyricism was so childish and when it wasnt, it was sexual. I was disappointed. It's an okay album but not worth the wait. I'll still stream though because i want her to win
While the album was better than I expected, it’s still pretty pedestrian R&B/Pop that could be made by any other r&b songstress. Nothing groundbreaking or life changing to justify the years of delay to chase perfection (as Normani claims to be a perfectionist). For so many years making this project I expected the album to have a bit more lyrical substance if I’m being honest. Normani spends so much time with her guard up, I thought her album would be where she let go, dug deep and came out with something profound to say about trials & insecurities these past years - à la RAYE on her debut album (which also arrived after years of stifling delay). Raye’s brutal honesty on ‘21st Century Blues’ is what made it so captivating and gave it bite. I don’t know why I expected a similar candour from Normani. By the end of the album you learn nothing new about Normani or her life, it’s distractingly impersonal and lacks identity.
You know nothing about music. Did we know anything about Whitney, Mariah, Toni, hell even Beyoncé’s personal life? It’s music. They don’t have to talk about their personal life if they don’t want to.
