A couple of other great comedies from this era would be "The Jerk" with Steve Martin or "Johny Dangerously" with Michael Keaton

The Vaseline under the baseball player's hat is an old cheating trick pitchers did. They didn't have the whole jar under the cap, but they'd have a glob of Vaseline smeared under the visor. The pitcher would pretend to adjust his cap but he was really getting some Vaseline on his thumb so he could 'doctor up' the ball. A ball with Vaseline on it was harder to hit.

The intro is a meeting of world/terrorist leaders at the time this movie was made, the bald guy with the port-wine stain birthmark on his head is supposed to be former USSR leader Mikhael Gorbachev, The one at the head of the table is I believe supposed to be Ayatollah Khomeini, there's Yasser Arafat etc. too

I always thought this scene was completely detached from the rest of the movie. But if I'm not mistaken, there we see that very Mr. Pahpshmir, who later came up with the best terrorist act he could think of: to kill the queen.

The humor from the Eighties are so great. Cheesy but i love it. Leslie Nilesen is such a stoic faced actor. Airplane was his first role as a comedic. Before that he was only serious roles. RIP this great actor. Love your reaction, sure you had a great time watching this. Please watch the other two.

The jokes that are a bit dated, or obscure:
Lipstick on the stakeout - Back in the 80s, pistachios were dyed a magenta color to make them more appealing. The joke being that they had been sitting there on stakeout so long eating pistachios that their faces were stained, and there was a huge pile of discarded shells next to the car.
Frank searches the pitcher - Frank searches the pitcher and finds some seemingly random objects on him, like sandpaper, vaseline, and even a cordless grinder. These are all things that can change the aerodynamics and flight characteristics of a baseball to make their thrown pitches harder for the batter to predict. They're also considered cheating.

What's sad is this style of comedy died. The slapstick humor was great for the 80s, paying homage to folks who grew up with Bugs Bunny n 3 Stooges found fun, but this kind of funny is the 21st century inability to appreciate such fun. Good attempt to revitalize with the Scary Movie formula, but that was blowing on the remaining embers of a dead fire in my opinion.

  • @erikvaid2560

While the physical comedy is straight out of the Three Stooges there's no way this movie would have been made in the last decade.
