It was great to hear about your thoughts when buying them. I'm curious about M1 vs M2 Mini and whether the A) the BT issue is still there and B) the NAND chip hampers day to day performance.
With the Pro, I'm curious as to whether with more ports, you can get away without a hub or is that still a Mac Mini essential.
Also, would be great if you reviewed or spoke about a range of monitors you can buy (Apple and not Apple) to pair with them.

Everyone is doing reviews of the M2 8GB/256 base model or the Mac Mini Pro. No one is doing reviews of the Base model 16GB/256 version. We all know now the 256gb version is half as slow as the 512 version on read/wrote speeds, but how fast is the 16GB version with still 256ssd? Does it improve performance like the 512ssd does? If you could only upgrade one thing for performance increase on the base model, should it be ram or ssd?

I bought the M2 pro with 16gb and a 1TB ssd drive for 4 reasons. I owned a 2015 iMac I5 that was getting very slow. 1st I wanted something that could possibly last a little longer. 2nd I play guitar and am doing recording. 3rd I’m a amateur photographer and can’t stand the wait while processing RAW photos. The faster the better. 4th I wanted as many USB ports as possible. I am using all the ports plus a couple on An extra hub. I probably could have gotten away with the regular M2, but wanted the speed, flexibility, and as much longevity as i could get.

I'm a muso and feel very left out of the discussion about the M2 series and usefulness/specs for Logic, virtual instruments, etc. So I'm glad that in some way you will be able to give me an idea of what I can expect of the new generation - and hopefully not in comparison with the M1 but as a stand alone experience. Because of their reliability and continuing usefulness, like a lot of people I'm shifting from Macs many more than 1 or 2 generations ago. I have a (still very functional) 2010 macbook Pro 17", and even a quite capable 2007 cheesegrater (for 32bit driven music hardware) and so videos about improvement over the M1 are absolutely redundant for me.

Moving a piece of data takes time and energy. If you shorten the distance to move that data, e.g. from 5 to 3 nano-meters it will be done with less time and energy - it's like driving a car 3 or 5 miles in the same speed - shorter distance means less time and gas. This is not the entire truth, but it's a kind of visual way to look at it and grasping the benefits of shrinking the size of the components in a chip. I think that still 3 nm (0.000 000 003 mm) is referring to the thickness of the "wire" (the silicone lead) between two components in the chip.

Not because I'm an actual "pro" user, but because I'd want this thing to last and be very useful for years to come. Will I get the M3 Studio? Nobody should buy the cheap "pro" when Apple are once again putting in the poor performance components to save them a few cents.
Buy with at least 1TByte ssd (4 nand instead of only 2) or you will get poorer transfer rates. You will likely also burn out the ssd chips like on the first M1. The good thing about mcmini is that you don't risk another keyboard gate or display burnin gate.

Things I'd like to know: 1. Is the M2 Pro worth considering over the M2 in terms of "future proofing"? I'm leaning towards the Pro mainly because of the extra ports even though I probably don't need the extra power, but would like another reason to spend the extra money! 2. How quiet or otherwise are these Minis? Can you hear the fan?

    • @NorthernWhisper

The mini computers are very quiet. The pro will spin its fans sometimes but the regular m2 is basically silent. As for the ports, if that is the only reason you want the m2pro, just buy a dock designed for the mini for about $80-$100. Spend what you save on the 1TB drive M2 rather than letting extra power go to waste. I am editing multiple 4K streams of video on the regular M2. The pro is only worthy is you are a pro and will earn money with it.

I keep looking at all of these new Macs, but I literally cannot justify upgrading from my base version M1 MacBook Air. Just cannot fault it. If anything, the only Mac I'll be looking at getting is a refurbed version of the M1 Mac Mini you've got with the 16gb RAM and 512 SSD, so I can just keep my M1 MacBook Air in my bag when I get in, instead of plugging it into my desktop set up.
With regards to your conundrum (once reviews have been carried out) ... perhaps keep with your original plan of using the M1 Mac Mini for music production, send the M2 Mac Mini back and replace it with the M2 Pro Mac Mini, and use that for production work at your desk, and keep the 14 inch M2 Max MacBook Pro as your laptop. Then sell the 16 inch M1 version, your M2 MacBook Air and M1 iMac to top the bank balance back up a bit.

The Studio is a better buy when compared to a fully loaded M2 Pro Mac mini. I got a "maxed out" M2 Pro Mini with all of the above, but bumped up the SSD to 1TB which improves IO even more. I also have a couple Mac Studios (a base model and an almost fully loaded one with 1 TB of SSD). You have to be very careful when selecting the SSD on any Apple product since it often has a disproportionate effect on performance. There are specific reasons to get a beefed up M2 Pro Mini, but if you know the box is staying put, then get the M1 Max Studio base model with 1 TB of SSD since that will bring your disk IO up to 5GB/s and provide an extra 20% performance boost over a fully load M2 Pro Mini. As soon as you raise the memory on a Mini to 32GB, you have to ask yourself why you're not opting for an M1 Max Studio. The answer in my case was that I needed something even more portable than a Max Studio for live gigs and travel to difficult locations. The only other good reason I can think of choosing a Mini over a Studio is if you absolutely need HDMI 2.1 support.

Hi Mark, The videos I've seen so far indicate about a 20% uptick in performance. Not a bad jump. What I cannot get over it that Apple in their infinite wisdom only uses a single Nand chip in their base model Mac Mini and the base model 14" Macbook Pro. I'm not certain about the 16" yet. I find that unfathomable in 2022 that they would hobble these machines for the sake of saving a few dollars in parts. This is one of those "What was Tim and crew thinking" moments. Definately interested in the Mac Mini Pro (which does not suffer from the Nand chip issue, by the way). Looking forward to that video in particular and your take on that machine.

Test it pleaseee...Does it handle everything an ordinary user can throw at it? is it good for someone just getting into photo editing or video editing? Could it work for the student doing all those things on occasion, or the family ?

In around 1988 I bought a Schneider PC/AT 10 MHz for around £700. It had a none standard slower 20 Mb hard disk which is why it was so cheap. It had on board EGA graphics. It revolutionised my gaming and word processing. It wasn't a proprietary system such as the Amiga where the base system was cheap but every upgrade cost a fortune. Over the next three years I upgraded to a 50 Mb hard disk, bought a VGA card and monitor and a bought a higher capacity floppy disk drive.
Modern Macs are even more restrictive than Amiga's were in 1988. You cant upgrade your storage for any money no matter how much you pay. A Mac Studio with a single plug in 512 Gb flash module cannot have a second one fitted even though this would be a simple plug in option. Linus Tech bought two 512 Gb Mac Studios but found that something in the firmware stopped the 512 Gb flash module from one being used to upgrade the other. Apple's only upgrade path is to buy a completely new system. The cost of extra flash or RAM chips in one of these "upgraded" systems costs around ten times the cost of the chips themselves.

Here’s an idea , annoyances, like for example buying a Mac Studio Pro and not having thunderbolt ports in the front and the reported fan noise that doesn’t happen on the max $4000 version, getting the Mac Mini with 512G ssd and having performance degraded because of the on chip ssd case; the point is, what’s the minimum or reasonable choice to,NOT have any of those annoyances. I’ve just bought a studio display and annoyingly enough dont come with thunderbolt out for daisy chainring nut it s advantages are more than this annoyances since a $4000 monitor is not a reasonable choice for me. I think you get it. To summarize how to travel thru your choices and not end up with something unreasonable priced and full of annoyances. Feel free to contact me if you want to talk or chat. Every reviewer orders the wrong one - partly because their job is to compare, and to see what the minimal machine is that can get people by until next (year?). To avoid regret, wait until you absolutely must have one, and get the biggest baddest one you can. Then run it until the wheels fall off or must-have software requires new architectures.

I think you should pick up the base model M2 Pro (w 16GB & 512GB ssd - you can probably pick it up at your local Apple Store) which I really think is what any small(ish) creator needs and see how well it does for both video creation tasks and as a home audio setup. I think you will be surprised. Everybody keeps upping the ram or ssd or gets the unbinned model. The base model will run your music studio fine and serve as a backup for your laptop.

I don’t think any of the comparison guides doing the rounds have any point to them .. we all know a similarly specked M2 will be around 30% faster than the same specked M1, so as you say ‘why bother testing’ The only question is which spec to choose when ordering. To me this is simple and straightforward, but a guide for others may be useful.

Good to be upfront. Music production on the M2 would be interesting to see. I’ve been using Intel Mac Minis in my recording studio for years and I’ve added the Mac Studio M1 Max last year. I stack them with Vienna Ensemble Pro to get more processing power rather than just using one of them. M1 was a huge leap for music production but M2 is a small step for us. Because music production priorities are usually RAM (and swap speed now makes the SSD effectively part of RAM) and CPU (GPU is nice for making music videos but not something you use much in a DAW) then single core speed (multi-core is relatively less important in music production), the fully loaded M2 Mac Mini is probably overkill and the Mini Pro is probably not really necessary to deliver better or more musical product compared to the baseline Mini (of course avoiding the cheapest M2 machines which we all know slow down the swap speed by using a single SSD where M1 base models kept speeds up by running two SSD chips). Anyway, music production on the M2 would be good to see. I suspect the M2 will allow a small increase in DAW performance over the M1 and probably just through the load and save times being quicker - i.e. it’s a mild workflow improvement. M1 was a leap but M2 over M1 is just a bit of progress forward. M3 (the 3 Nm just brings everything closer together so makes it potentially even quicker) will be probably a larger improvement…
