@Trinity M the JLaw cover from 2022 is actually criminal though. The expression she has and the styling is absolutely terrible. It's as bland as a beige wall.
Vogue China & Taiwan are really killing it-beautiful concepts, amazingly executed. Clear artistry involved. U.S. Vogue is so embarrassing, I'm legit embarrassed for us! Artisticly devoid and, as you said, heavily relying on the star power of whoever is on their cover. If they replaced the famous people in these covers and photoshoots with some rando, then absolutely no one would care.
Now that relations with China are calming down again post covid, there's actually been a lot of representation I've been noticing pop up. If y'all haven't heard of the brand girlcult, well enjoy. What fun imagery
@@LisaFevral they're super cute too! My friend is obsessed with their powder bc it doesn't look too dry I've been loving my girlcult eyeshadow quad 👍🏾 "Made in China" doesn't have the same stigma as it once did
yeah it definitely shouldn't have the stigma, since they're the ones who actually have the infrastructure we don't since we decided to put profits above sustainable domestic production! they're the ones who basically make everything under the sun ahahah
Also Cosmopolitan is the oldest magazine in existence since like the colonial days and it used to be more like The New Yorker but targeted towards women so it’s really interesting to look at their old covers.
what confuses me is how’re other countries covers have so much creativity & effort put into them with a few duds but american covers have like 100 duds. it’s the same “put a lady in a gown with wet hair in front of a grey background” 🙄
That’s because Vogue was never created to be a showcase of creative artistry, it was a template for showcasing fashion and pop culture. The international covers are reinterpretations of Vogues own existence. If you look at the archive, you’ll see that the covers were pretty much the same format once photography was introduced.
I think they are trying to follow the trend of the all natural and simple look. That's why all the photos are boring. They stopped taking risks. They forgot that they are a fashion magazine and they should be creative and they should be the ones setting trends, not follow them. And you can still be creative with fashion, the background and the general aesthetic while giving the "all natural" vibe. You just have to find the right people for the job who know what they are doing.
If we took any of the models in their current styling, then gave them a neon object to drop, a purse for example, they could still be in these bland poses and makeup but pop since your eye would go to something vibrant them bounce back to them. That's me not even brainstorming but just at a glance the first idea that could help
Agreed. Anna got caught up in making sure the magazine sells that she stopped taking risks. Its why there's a celeb on every cover and the photos of them are banal at best. Its been this way for a good decade too.
International Vogues have been putting US Vogue to shame for years now, they've made themselves irrelevant at this point... I don't understand why they didn't switch up the creative team a long time ago!
@Trinity M I'm in my 30s and don't use tiktok. We're talking about the difference in quality of styling, photography and innovation between US Vogue and international Vogues, noting how international versions have (in our opinion) been outshining the US for several years, which has nothing to do with social media... doesn't seem like you watched the video?
@Trinity M ok I scrolled down and saw you left a lot of comments, so I'll just say... look, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this stuff is all based on perception and opinion, and we're never all going to agree. It's totally fine if you personally like the US Vogue - and as you said it's not like they don't have people who still follow them. We're each entitled to our own opinions, and since it's entirely subjective we're never going to convince each other, so let's just agree to disagree.
@@LisaFevral So behind what? Vogue China has an Australian born, ny-based editor in chief hoping to grow china's share of luxury brand market. That's the difference. Vogue Italia/US/France/Britain just share their own brands, mostly, while other parts of the world play catch-up in the high-fashion marketplace. That's why it feels stale. They're doing fine and feel comfortable. Comfort breeds mundanity. It seems you cover a lot of topics, but aren't educated in any? Maybe stay in your lane and realize the other vogues are copying what has already been done. Also, maybe realize that vogue US doesn't put they're exciting spreads on the cover, that's for a topical mainstream success coupled with their own story inside. Also, I wasn't sure about Leslie Sun, who I love, but yeah, also a cali-educated artist. Surprise surprise. Vogue Taiwan is incredibly creative, but her angle has always been an art-first one.
honestly my favorite vogue covers are the ones from the 1910s. the art is just so beautiful and fun you can tell each artist actually took their job seriously. then you get to the 70s and it just a wall of up close potraits of a womans face
I personally like how Asian vogue incorporates socio-cultural aspects in their photography that pretty much captures the collective identity in artistic contemporary form. Like how Vogue Korea incorporates hanbok, Vogue China incorporates their traditional art, and Vogue Singapore incorporating Perankan aesthetic etc etc. It's giving that ethereal vibes.
The Zara catalogue now looks “editorial” because Vogue US got so lazy, not because Zara suddenly became groundbreaking. It’s embarassing, tbh. A fashion magazine should be some of the craziest, most conceptually challenging thing ever, aka take something as basic and daily as clothes and transform it into art
Zara has one of the worst websites in the history of the world lol. Also, they do that in the US to specifically appear high-brow, like other high brow fashion spreads. They're fast-fashion, no different than h&m or forever 21, but have duped Americans.
oh wow the Vogue China covers are literally stunning like THAT is the kind of magazine you want to see on someone's coffee table, it's actually artistic
I'm so tired of seeing models and artist pose with a blank expression. IT`S SO BORING. I see so many videos and pictures that are ruined because the person looks like they're disassociating, all because people see exaggerated (and even normal) facial expressions as "ugly." Screaming, crying, yelling it's all beautiful. And you can convey so much with a simple smile or frown. some of these models look like a deer in headlights and only get away with it because they're conventionally attractive. Everything is about features and not expression when usually it should be the other way around.
@@LisaFevral lol, that's ridiculous. Why lie on the internet if you don't know what you're talking about. Where's your source for this. Not smiling is partly because it draws from the clothing/theme, and partly because it makes the model look less serious and more relatable. Models are meant to be seen an untouchable, above the general populace, special. Not smiling gives a sense of power. There are plenty of specific "lifestyle" spreads that feature laughing and different expressions. Although, again, because we're human, our eyes will immediately be drawn to that instead of flow around the page. Inaccessibility is the name of the game.
@@KimmaParish it's 2023, facial expressions will always depend on the concept (if they have one). Believe it or not, those models looking blank are still being directed to different expressions.. you can express by just the eyes, how you look into the camera, not looking into the camera.. a little pout, a little squint, etc. They are not really blank.
i feel like vogue in general is sometimes boring with their covers, i rlly love dazed magazine covers im always so excited seeing them - nayeon & doja are my favorites!
As a Taiwanese, I'm sooo glad that Vogue Taiwan is getting attention! I don't really buy beauty magazines but still would visit bookstores every once in a while just to check the new magazine covers out 😭❤️
the reason the britain covers blend together is mostly because they follow the greige agenda. its extremely minimalistic and safe to try to make it "timeless" but also mostly because it is simply the colorscheme that fits their culture in comparison to for example african or asian cultures, where bold colors in their house & clothing are prominent. mina le just released a very interesting video about it regarding home decor but its interesting to see that the trend also influenced the magazines
@@LisaFevral i dont think anyone likes the boring griege vogue covers here either. i very rarely see a cover i like artistically and never hear anyone talk about them. most of the population here also have a moderate to strong distaste for the griege agenda because theres an epidemic of people buying beautiful old houses and turning them into modern, grey squares. but i think op was correct in that vogue acts more as a safe and timeless documentation of pop culture? it doesnt even try to cater to most of the fashion thats popular among the youth here
@Trinity M oh yeah thats fair enough. imo i dont think sales represent how much people like the covers themselves though, i think its mostly the celebrities and the safety and reputation of the brand that makes people come back to it when overwhelmed by tv mags on the same rack- in that vein i do understand how it could look considerably classier. but when i worked in a shop i only saw older people buy it, so perhaps this is more of an age thing (although i personally dont know any older people who buy it)
@@dickottel That's interesting. There's something to be said for cultural differences, but also, whether the vogue of that country is vying for a high-fashion art house look or commercial fashion journalism. W magazine is for couture in the states. I love it, but there's literally not a wearable piece from cover to back. Not even something you could take inspo from for a wardrobe piece. It really is great as art, though, and the haute couture space is covered well. I don't think US vogue is going for that, nor ever has. It's always been a commercial fashion bible of sorts. Vogue China, probably doesn't want to compete with the already established commercial Chinese fashion mags, so has carved a high-fashion, celebrity/elite look out of the market.
I think that another problem is that many western celebrities care too much about their face? Like, they're scared of not being seen as pretty, scared to deliver an impactful imagine, and that's what's holding them back!
But seeing as they're not professional models, I think they would rely on guidance from the photographer and creative director more than anything. I feel like a lot of celebrities would be down with interesting concepts, but it's not up to them. Unless you're Beyoncé and then you get to demand the photographer you want to shoot you, but most of them aren't like that.
“An Elle cover from 2010” SOOOOOOOOO TRUE BESTIEEEEEEEEEEEE. Relying on star power alone is like thee problem with everything in the 2020s movies music fashion and almost NO ONE is GIVING
As an artist its really interesting how obvious the editing is in the american vogue covers? Like pretty much all of these are clearly edited, but the good ones like the zendaya one or the taiwanese heat wave one with the gold in the water use that editing to place their subject in their photo or make them look almost like a painting themself. The editing is not like... taking away from the photo, but adding to it like deepening shadows and sharpening colors. On the other hand, the american ones definitely take away from the image itself, drawing the eye to strange places and just like. covering the whole image in one color? Which doesn't make any of it stand out. It's just an odd and seemingly incredibly amateur choice.
Those covers give 45yo housewife magazine with fast and easy food receipes, tips on making your own herbs garden, and a free pattern for a skirt.... To be fair I don't think Vogue France is that much better, but still. And that's why growing up I was reading science magazines!
I think Vogue France can make beautiful artistic covers, IMHO. June/July 2022 comes to mind, where they evoke Boticelli's Venus, or even August 2022, which at first appears to be rather simple, but the color gradient on the hard copy is incredibly beautiful. Same for September 2022 (which I regret not purchasing at the time). Their October 2022 is a good example of how to do a simple cover as well. The background is muted but Lou's pose (the artist on the cover) and the Courreges outfit makes for a very powerful cover despite its simplicity. I do agree that they have some mediocre covers as well (their recent issue with Lily Collins as an example) but Vogue France is of those magazines that I never seek to buy when entering a bookstore, and yet I end up buying it half the time regardless because of how beautiful the photography in some of their covers can be.
My every day makeup style is heavily 20s inspired lol A little liner on the eyes modernized with glitter, heavy blush but not just red (even though I love looking like pikachu too), blank glowy skin, no sculpting like bronzer, polished brows instead of that sad expression that was trendy back then. Gals were dressssssinngggggg I also really live for 60s and 70s Italian styling
Thank you for dragging American Vogue, it’s well over due! South Korean Vogue in 2022 was also amazing I loved their Blue issue for June/July especially!
i feel like they should’ve leaned into that more! like put het is fucking busted up carhart and dickies and just a simple cap and have here stand in a sterile room with a fish. no makeup, no glossiness. why is this lady in a room with a fish? idk. it’s funny.
I have to say I did not expect a video based on critiquing photography/cover design from your channel, and it's a welcome surprise! You're extremely perceptive and understand the need for a good concept, good color choices, framing, and I'm really amazed because as someone studying graphic design I too pay a lot of attention to that kind of stuff and not a lot of people have an eye for it. I really think everything you said was spot on and how you explain your train of thought, I know a lot of people think of graphic design and photography in general as a bit of a nerdy thing and you make it fun to listen to, so I look forward to more videos like this if you choose to do so!
I have a degree in contemporary visual art, so this is kinda the thing that I know on a deeper level. I did focus on conceptual art instead of fashion or something media related though, so I know more about pivotal artists than commercial successes!
I remember time when vogue was considered bible of fashion but i think Anna mostly focuses on met gala and vogue nowdays is just a brochure full of adds. I buy Vogue just to decorate my coffe table but never read them cuz its just boring.
you know I thought about that and I just don't know why our generation or even a few generations before us ever considered Vogue the bible of fashion, since we actually got to only see the tired, lazy version of it our entire lives
@@LisaFevral I agree. I think until mid 2000s people mostly saw what celebrities wore and what was the “next big thing” in pages of vogue, now it’s easy to go on social media and gather inspiration. I just remembered when Anna became head of Vogue, she bringed something new and fresh...kind of a bit rebellious.I don’t wanna say that Anna and team of vogue can’t create something interesting but now it’s just airbrushed celebrities on the covers(sometimes I feel like Anna should resign and just focus on met gala)cuz China and Japan are really eating American vogue alive without salt.
@@Paula11117 considering Anna Wintour allowed the Marilyn Monroe dress thing to happen kinda shows she doesn't even care about the preservation of historical fashion, which is the original purpose of the Met Gala so I really doubt she should be allowed to deal with the Met Gala as well (idk if US has the cultural artifact preservation laws that would allow for the legal removal of her from the role tho considering Ripley's owner is not in prison at the moment)
Hi! I think you would appreciate some of the Vogue Ukraine covers, not for 2022 ofc (the January one slaps though!) but 2020-2021 you could definitely see more and more work being put into the artistic aspect of it all.
When you said the name of the photographer in Russian, I felt the same way as when my teacher at the American school spoke to me in Russian. I literally didn't even think that we speak the same language. Thanks for the video. The criticism is constructive, you're gorgeous, the accent came out of the chat.
The vogue issue of Grimes ( I am not sure if it was vogue China or Japan) is a perfect example of using a celebrity in an artistic way not just a marketing tool like you said, it can be done!!
if you had to come up with a concept for florence for vogue, what would you have done? i think i would’ve made the food look like jewelry or something.
I think I would do shots in similar locations and props but with a different framing and styling, as well as photo approach. More like taeyon’s INVU album photoshoot in the apartment vibe, a weirdly high fashion framing of a domestic setting
I will always love the British Vogue Feb 2022 issue with all dark skinned women. It is so beautiful especially because I grew up with one of the models and I’m always so shocked but proud of her achievements. As someone who is also dark-skinned and South Sudanese it’s just so special to me 🫶🏿
I like that cover too, but I saw a lot of people criticizing it for bad lighting! I’m not an expert on lighting a scene with a lot dark tones in the shot, so I’m not sure if the criticism had any merit, so I didn’t include it. But personally I really liked the shot and the contrast of it with the bench and publication name - I always like a bright pop of colour!
@@LisaFevral the lighting issue was actually done on purpose from what I understand. But people had already decided to hate it so nothing could be done about it at that point
The craziest part to me is that all the people involved with each shoot have thousands of dollars to play with and this is what we get. There's so much money, read as potential, being wasted constantly every day it's dizzying. Whenever there's a lazy portrait, the extra dollars go into someone's pocket instead of the page and that's what breaks my heart the most. Yes the models should be paid what their star power brings but it shouldn't be at the expense of the finished result. We deserve a society with less greed and more art. This video is art. 💐🥂
I genuinely think that they are just being lazy and still think that they're doing something "good". just the name of the publication would get them anything they want, they don't even have to spend that much money to get something interesting, and yet -
@@LisaFevral you're right on the money as they say. when people like you tell em they're resting on their laurels, they take it as a compliment, fer sure.
Lisa! Would you be interested in making a deep dive maybe on how you would make a cover/whole fashion magazine? Like what topics you would put, how you would design the pages and how to make a cover interesting? It would be a very interesting video considering you are an artist!
I think a common misconception is that American Vogue is a fashion magazine for fashion people and it’s not. It’s target audience has always been women who can afford the clothes, who themselves are often afraid of artistic fashion. The wealthy soccer mom from Texas or the investment banker from Wisconsin understand the Jennifer Lawrence cover. That beauty approach translates to them. American women often appreciate visuals they can see themselves in, whereas women of other cultures with wealth seek fantasy and opulence (India, China, Italy). American Vogue focuses on retail and business. If you look at NYC in relation to the other fashion capitals you will see the same.
6:53 that is so gorgeous and it kinda reminds that the Little Mermaid live action is coming in this year and it feels so nice to see random stuff remind of it since I'm SO EXCITED FOR IT. And the design, the DRESS OMG I LOVE IT
7:59 it gives winx season one Musa vibe and I love it. It's gorgeous, both feminine AND masculine in my opinion and it works so well with the white background
I feel like a big reason is that Vogue is no longer the trendsetter but is being dictated by trends. I’m a Chinese American artist who spends a lot of time in China and the political economical climate is still very much maximalist and materialist, unlike America which has taken a huge turn in the last two years. I feel Vogue no longer has autonomy it’s just depending on the socio-political climate which has been leaning much more towards the “natural” aesthetic, at least on the surface.
@@LisaFevral oh I agree. But I don’t know how genuine that is. The people the magazine is published for and the people who work behind them exist in very different socio economical circles that lead to different fashion utilities
You should go over some of GQs recent covers. Their photoshoot last year with Robert Pattinson was so fun and compelling in my opinion, but they picked the blandest photo of the bunch to be the cover.
I go to LCF in London and literally the student photography work they put on our walls is sooo much more exciting and interesting than whatever this is. Vogue UK def had a (slightly) better year than the US - I have no idea what's going on but if they're really struggling to find the talent I'm sure there are plenty of creative directors and photographers around who would loveeee to help out 😂
Honestly i don’t even know if it is the talent issue or the iron fist these publications hold the creative teams in at this point 😭 like for example people attack stylists of shows and movies about the looks that are in them, but sooooo often it’s actually directors and producers who have restricted every creative choice the stylists would make. So I really can’t tell now ahahah
As a photographer I Love this video. So on point and great to vent along with you as ive greatly noticed the constant decay of fashion photography over the years. Its.... Sad.
I'm not usually one to comment, aha, I'm a lil shy. But I feel like I want to mention this, the Creative Director and Editor in chief of Vogue China is Margaret Zhang. She has a blog, I still think it's up, but for years, before she started working at Vogue, I religiously looked at her blog, and was just in awe of her work. Def check it out. I'm not exactly sure how big publications work for magazines, but I'm assuming since she is the creative director and editor in chief, that she has a lot of input into the end result of the magazine. And she's just incredible, and has been for years. Just a genius. And as someone who has been a supporter of her blog for years, it's just amazing to see her work evolve, and how she was able to get to where she is now. Anyways, just wanted to pop in here, and make that lil comment. Also your full name is so gorgeous. Great vid as always! ✨
The covers from China and Taiwan are on a whole other level for real! I'm in love with Zendaya's one as well, I remember seeing it on Instagram the first time and I was mesmerized!
Agreed girl, agreed! And I have been on the hunt for Taiwan's Heat Wave without it costing my whole bank account for months and months! Like you, I was in shock at how well they portrayed everything!
Honestly the most notable difference I noticed, was that the Chinese and Taiwanese vogue made such interesting silhouettes with the clothes and poses of the models
I live in Germany and it’s horrible- like the 50+ magazines that lay around in rich people waiting rooms. They had only one acceptable photo shoot in that magazine that I paid 8€ for
i personally love Vogue Singapore and now, apparently, Taiwan. every photo you showed was AMAZING. and the Chinese inclusive one really surprised me. really good too.
The reason why American Vogue tends to make simplistic covers is because Ana Wintour (the chief editor) wants the covers to relate more to the average reader. This was a change she made when she first became editor. Before her, the covers would always feature headshots of popular models with heavy makeup and expensive jewelry, but after she became chief, she changed the style of the covers to feel more casual and natural. In fact, for the first cover she did as chief editor, she showcased a lesser-known model, laughing, with hair across her face and wearing jeans; the printers of the magazine ended up sending the picture back because they thought Vogue had sent the wrong image. (It's true, you can look it up.) So while the current cover choices may seem artless to some, to others, it's genuine and realistic fashion that they can try themselves.
I feel like that might've made sense at the time, but today magazine sales simply aren't the same, and I'd wager most regular folks don't really spend their money on a magazine when they can get the attainable fashion inspiration online for free. I think it's safe to say that today most of the people who even care about Vogue are people who are more into fashion. And when there's influencers who have more interesting/inspiring photos consistently on their social media than Vogue does on their covers, it feels like it's time for a change.
Why does it have to be attainable? For me, cover has to be inspiring instead of showing that fashion is attainable. If we want to see attainable and relatability we can just see the h&m catalogue or something. This is vogue. There has to be some class, purpose, and artistry in the creation. I'm not mad at you for the info btw
Hmmmm, I never thought the "average person" could relate to "Vogue" unless they were interested in fashion and especially haute couture but you have the 411 on that change for sure. I think they should re-consider that decision. I'm not into looking at celebrities who look like crap and are wearing clothes I could buy at Walmart.
On the subject of magazine covers, could i recommend looking at the Gothic Lolita Bible covers? their covers always have beautiful artwork and/or photoshoots inside that I personally spend hours looking at
As a former photography major at a fine arts school , I absolutely adored your rants about framing😂 . I really wanted to become a fashion photographer actually ha, btw I fr lold when you said Elle cover 2010 😂😂😂😂
But I love watching you go off sis! I support how picky you are about fashion. It means you’re not looking at the medium as a giant advert for consumers but rather as a lover of art who demands that the people at the top of their field put forth better work. I think it’s always ok to dissect fashion the way an art critic would dissect a painting

I was JUST thinking about this the other day, it's like you read my mind lol I go out of my way just to view Vogue China instead because the art is more moving and inspiring, or even just interesting!
I just wish mainstream magazines we see in our stores would put more effort in! But at the same time it would be nice if indie magazines were more accessible
From back in the 80’s on, I noticed one magazine would “get” the zeitgeist and the others would be stale. Sometimes a new magazine would evolve and be able to capture the aesthetic of the moment. Elle was the 80’s. I think Vogue and Bazaar were the essence of the 90’s. The 2000’s brought us a barrage of really great experimental sometimes extreme wearable art and new magazines.
My mouth hung open for a while when you showed the vogue Taiwan issue omg!!!!! Art. That is all. Pure art. Vogue China killing it too. The US vogue should really be EMBARRASSED because I am for them.
I’m confused only because americas next top model attempts to do high concept shoots but people make fun of how elaborate it is. But just like you, I WANT to see that in high fashion!
As you are young woman, I'm happy you're calling out, seeing through and pointing out the lame, mediocre mainstream magazine that Vogue has turned into, besides Asia that's doing well and carries on the magic creative legacy and fashion status Vogue is all about. I, as an older woman, belonging to a generation growing up in eras of highly skilled creative professionals when it comes to fashion and high status fashion magazines like Vogue it's just so sad and painful to watch the death and decay of Vogue. I was subscriber to French Vogue for many years, especially the magic content of the 70s was pure artistic masterpiece. The cover girl photos you briefed in the end of the video are from my era and they're are masterpieces - as I understood it you didn't like them and I just love them!🥰📸😍📸🤩📸😘 I'm very thankful for this analysis you're doing, how weird it is that Vogue is sinking lower and lower in its lame content. It's like Vogue is suffering from creative paralyzes. Some of the cover photos I don't agree with you anyway, eg zendaya or the cover you think is going down in history and the african b&w profile - these 3 are nothing special to me, not lame, not mediocre but nothing special as in my eyes they don't reach up 100% to Vogue standards. I definitely think it's super important with your reviews! Even if we don't agree on everything I respect how you run through it with your critical judgment. It's a relief to watch that the younger generation is reacting against this kind of bullsh*t nonsense. Thank you very much✌😊

The international covers are reinterpretations of Vogues own existence. If you look at the archive, you’ll see that the covers were pretty much the same format once photography was introduced.
the greige aesthetic strikes again
I think they are trying to follow the trend of the all natural and simple look. That's why all the photos are boring. They stopped taking risks. They forgot that they are a fashion magazine and they should be creative and they should be the ones setting trends, not follow them. And you can still be creative with fashion, the background and the general aesthetic while giving the "all natural" vibe. You just have to find the right people for the job who know what they are doing.
Yeah and the framing doesn’t have to be sloppy even if you’re going for natural
If we took any of the models in their current styling, then gave them a neon object to drop, a purse for example, they could still be in these bland poses and makeup but pop since your eye would go to something vibrant them bounce back to them.
That's me not even brainstorming but just at a glance the first idea that could help
The covers remind me of my mom's old J. Jill and Woman Within catalogs
Agreed. Anna got caught up in making sure the magazine sells that she stopped taking risks. Its why there's a celeb on every cover and the photos of them are banal at best. Its been this way for a good decade too.
Italian Vogue does the same thing in some of their covers tho and it's not nearly as boring
a random screenshot of midsommar looks more fashion worthy than the whole editorial vogue did for Florence
International Vogues have been putting US Vogue to shame for years now, they've made themselves irrelevant at this point... I don't understand why they didn't switch up the creative team a long time ago!
they are so behind, I genuinely thought that maybe I had the wrong info in my brain and vogue originated somewhere else bc damn
I honestly think that Grace Coddington is true creative, but Anna Wintour seems to cut all of her best photo shoots
Yeah, like they really didn't try that hard with photography
Deep vintage fashion was actually really fire if you can ignore the racism and whatnot
Yes i love the covers from the 1920s and 10s
art nouveau >>>>>>>
Everything is about features and not expression when usually it should be the other way around.
oftentimes the reason why they have no expressions is also because they don't have a concept for their photoshoot either
Yeah i like wonderland covers, but there are a few vogues around the world that serve time and time again, to compare to whatever we get😭😭
dazed magazine is so dope,, paper magazine and galore are also some of my favourites
As a Taiwanese, I'm sooo glad that Vogue Taiwan is getting attention!
I don't really buy beauty magazines but still would visit bookstores every once in a while just to check the new magazine covers out 😭❤️
the reason the britain covers blend together is mostly because they follow the greige agenda. its extremely minimalistic and safe to try to make it "timeless" but also mostly because it is simply the colorscheme that fits their culture in comparison to for example african or asian cultures, where bold colors in their house & clothing are prominent. mina le just released a very interesting video about it regarding home decor but its interesting to see that the trend also influenced the magazines
it is so strange to me that they don't use colours, but I guess I'm also not British so
@@LisaFevral i dont think anyone likes the boring griege vogue covers here either. i very rarely see a cover i like artistically and never hear anyone talk about them. most of the population here also have a moderate to strong distaste for the griege agenda because theres an epidemic of people buying beautiful old houses and turning them into modern, grey squares. but i think op was correct in that vogue acts more as a safe and timeless documentation of pop culture? it doesnt even try to cater to most of the fashion thats popular among the youth here
@Trinity M oh yeah thats fair enough. imo i dont think sales represent how much people like the covers themselves though, i think its mostly the celebrities and the safety and reputation of the brand that makes people come back to it when overwhelmed by tv mags on the same rack- in that vein i do understand how it could look considerably classier. but when i worked in a shop i only saw older people buy it, so perhaps this is more of an age thing (although i personally dont know any older people who buy it)
@Trinity M Yesss I hated the weird mermaid photos, I'd never buy a magazine with that on the cover. Give me a 'boring' beautiful woman any time.
I don't even know if they can serve anything else, maybe they can, but they never showcase it😭
But seeing as they're not professional models, I think they would rely on guidance from the photographer and creative director more than anything.
Relying on star power alone is like thee problem with everything in the 2020s movies music fashion and almost NO ONE is GIVING
it's like they want everyone to starve
As an artist its really interesting how obvious the editing is in the american vogue covers? Like pretty much all of these are clearly edited, but the good ones like the zendaya one or the taiwanese heat wave one with the gold in the water use that editing to place their subject in their photo or make them look almost like a painting themself. The editing is not like... taking away from the photo, but adding to it like deepening shadows and sharpening colors. On the other hand, the american ones definitely take away from the image itself, drawing the eye to strange places and just like. covering the whole image in one color? Which doesn't make any of it stand out. It's just an odd and seemingly incredibly amateur choice.
exactly, and it's a pattern! that photo from 2008 or so of vogue has SUCH heavy handed photoshop I cannot believe it
Those covers give 45yo housewife magazine with fast and easy food receipes, tips on making your own herbs garden, and a free pattern for a skirt....
I really missed when fashion illustrators made the covers
like in the 20s
It would be nice if vogue had a special month each year that would have a fashion illustration cover
@@LisaFevral PERIODT.
My every day makeup style is heavily 20s inspired lol
A little liner on the eyes modernized with glitter, heavy blush but not just red (even though I love looking like pikachu too), blank glowy skin, no sculpting like bronzer, polished brows instead of that sad expression that was trendy back then.
Gals were dressssssinngggggg
I also really live for 60s and 70s Italian styling
Essence did an illustrated cover with Angela Basset that was very cool if you'd like to take a look!
Adore 1920s makeup & fashion as well. Maybe could come back? Yah tired contour. Heavy blush is underrated.
Thank you for dragging American Vogue, it’s well over due! South Korean Vogue in 2022 was also amazing I loved their Blue issue for June/July especially!

I feel like most men post that crap on their dating profiles and that’s also the first thing I thought of when I saw Florence ahahhahaha
dlsdkksk i think it transcends the countries bc men literally everywhere pose like that with fish in their tinder profiles 😅😅
i feel like they should’ve leaned into that more! like put het is fucking busted up carhart and dickies and just a simple cap and have here stand in a sterile room with a fish. no makeup, no glossiness. why is this lady in a room with a fish? idk.

She's evolving and letting herself bloom and so gorgeously it's a wee bit insane but whatever

I just remembered when Anna became head of Vogue, she bringed something new and fresh...kind of a bit rebellious.I don’t wanna say that Anna and team of vogue can’t create something interesting but now it’s just airbrushed celebrities on the covers(sometimes I feel like Anna should resign and just focus on met gala)cuz China and Japan are really eating American vogue alive without salt.
yeah I think she needs to get some new blood in the studios

The vogue issue of Grimes ( I am not sure if it was vogue China or Japan) is a perfect example of using a celebrity in an artistic way not just a marketing tool
like you said, it can be done!!
It also makes a lot of sense with her aesthetic and themes she talks about in her music!
It was vogue china, they even did a short video.
if you had to come up with a concept for florence for vogue, what would you have done? i think i would’ve made the food look like jewelry or something.
I think I would do shots in similar locations and props but with a different framing and styling, as well as photo approach. More like taeyon’s INVU album photoshoot in the apartment vibe, a weirdly high fashion framing of a domestic setting
@@LisaFevral WAIT NO imagine instead of taeyeon it’s florence cutting the apple! that would be a serve actuslly!

And the outfitssss omg those jackets are so nice
@@LisaFevral the lighting issue was actually done on purpose from what I understand. But people had already decided to hate it so nothing could be done about it at that point

Right??? That’s what I thought right away ahaha and I can’t stand nonsense like that! Hated it before cancer, and absolutely loathe it now ahaha
They are not only conveying a very real issue but also bringing it in terms of concept, artistry, design, execution... I mean, we need more of those.
Both Vogue Taiwan and China
The craziest part to me is that all the people involved with each shoot have thousands of dollars to play with and this is what we get. There's so much money, read as potential, being wasted constantly every day it's dizzying.
Whenever there's a lazy portrait, the extra dollars go into someone's pocket instead of the page and that's what breaks my heart the most. Yes the models should be paid what their star power brings but it shouldn't be at the expense of the finished result.
We deserve a society with less greed and more art. This video is art. 💐🥂
I genuinely think that they are just being lazy and still think that they're doing something "good". just the name of the publication would get them anything they want, they don't even have to spend that much money to get something interesting, and yet -

oh my god, taiwan’s vogue mermaid photos are soooo gorgeous, such a vibe ❤
Emma Corrin on American Vogue is such a joke next to their British Vogue
Yeah it’s literally unbelievable omfg
I feel like a big reason is that Vogue is no longer the trendsetter but is being dictated by trends. I’m a Chinese American artist who spends a lot of time in China and the political economical climate is still very much maximalist and materialist, unlike America which has taken a huge turn in the last two years. I feel Vogue no longer has autonomy it’s just depending on the socio-political climate which has been leaning much more towards the “natural” aesthetic, at least on the surface.
I think natural aesthetic is great, I just think it could be done a lot better!

Gosh i love seeing someone with so much eye opening and frank things to say. Nevers stop please !

@@liv97497 and also would have made sense if it was still just models, but celebrities are not at all relatable
Relatable never mean lazy though

But I love watching you go off sis! I support how picky you are about fashion.
But just like you, I WANT to see that in high fashion!
i loved the rihanna one ngl the red and the gold looked stunning to me
you just opened the doors for me to obsess over vogue china and taiwan. i'm so so so thankful
The cover girl photos you briefed in the end of the video are from my era and they're are masterpieces - as I understood it you didn't like them and I just love them!🥰📸😍📸🤩📸😘
I'm very thankful for this analysis you're doing, how weird it is that Vogue is sinking lower and lower in its lame content.
Thank you very much✌😊
7:31 OH MY F-CKING GOD IT'S SO GORGEOUS I'M OBSESSED. honestly this feels so good and I just wish Fate:the winx saga went out with their creativity to make the magic and fairy design look good like hell imagen a fairy looking like this golden angel.
I wish all these people with their heaps of money would put a little effort in
I can remember when vogue in italy or other western countries were fire, unreal, inspiring and pure avant-garde
7:02 They should make Halle Bailey wear something like that if she's ever gonna do a magazine cover as Ariel for the new little mermaid remake
Yessss omg but they'll do a regular shot in nature or in a studio in a basic ass outfit with a crooked horizon ahahaha
oughh those vogue china and taiwan covers/photoshoots are so gorgeous
I feel like American Vogue just got Miranda Priestlied haha - you're like "Flowers? For spring? Groundbreaking!"
I literally have the heat wave Taiwan Vogue cover photo saved on my phone from when they first released it. ITS SO GOOD. I’m not even super educated about photography, (it’s more my dad’s thing), but even my untrained eye could tell that it was something really special and gorgeous.
Also, for good photography, (according to my hobby photographer father), would absolutely recommend Interview magazine, especially the Symone cover from last year, that one SLAYED.
oh I LOVE interview magazine photoshoots and covers, they really make it look breathtaking
@@LisaFevral snxkgxkhc ok hi first of all
"Jennifer Lawrence is not holding back"
Jennifer Lawrence looking subdued as hell
It's like they were just practicing how the shoots gonna take place, snaps a couple of pics, and accidentally publishing it. Raw and unseasoned.
One of my favorites is Vogue Latin America December 2021 with Arca in the cover because it broke all what was been doing in the past issues
omggg yessss Arca in general always has interesting photoshoots
I'm from Brazil, and when i used to work with fashion, around my 16 to 24 yo (i have 30 now) i noticed american vogue is very basic...even Brazilian vogue looked better and more artsy. Vogue China has ALWAYS been the best one, the vogue beauty from china still my fav beauty vogue of all times ! i used to like British and italy vogue too.
2:11 It's giving divorced dads on rural area Tinder.
Exactly😭😭
