I've been working in animation for years, and while I'm not an artist myself, as a coordinator I'm very familiar with the production pipeline, and I can tell you that having characters in different outfits every single episode is a ginoooormous and expensive pain in the ass. There's a reason so many cartoon characters wear the same clothes for their whole existence lol. It's one of my favourite details of the show.

That is a very rare thing to do too. I think the earliest cartoon that does this after 1990 is the 1994 Adaptation of The Magic School Bus Book Series by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. The outfits change to the context of the fieldtrip from the stock casual outfit for "Classroom", but everyone still retained their color schemes most of the time, only breaking it for the Winter Special and Arnold's PJ's. Arnold- Chrome Yellow and Blue Wanda- Maroon and Pink Tim- Turquoise and Teal Phoebe- Red and Yellow Ralphie- Green and Red Keesha- Mauve and Cyan Carlos- Blue and Red D.A.- Violet (and don't you dare call it purple around her! 😂) and Aquamarine. Janet on most occasions- Brown and Navy Blue.

I love all three girls as their personalities bounce off each other which is a sign of good writing and direction. The fashion is so good and I really love the amount of outfits they wore throughout the series. Since Shoujo fashion is in the rise, we need to bring girly show fashion back. Your Sam cosplay is the best despite being your first time wearing a lace front. 💚❤️💛

The jerry and the villain who switch there mind and body is a pretty great fight like I thoight the ep highlight would be jerry mother cameo but damn the fight at the end is still memorable many years later
Totally Spies for me is another one of those good examples of strong female characters. The main trio are spies who not only know how to defend themselves and go into physical combat with the villains, but they also use their wits in order to get them out of sticky situations. In addition to this, this show also allowed the girls to be fashionable and have slice of life moments which also represents in real life girl friend groups as well ❤ They’re like the sisters I wish I had 🥺
My fav thing about totally spies is all the outfits they were cuz most shows just kept the characters in the same outfits every episode and the girls are grew up and went to college
The way executives simply could not fathom little girls liking things independently from boys enough to make a show successful continues to fuel my female rage. Do you know how many men are centered in the media I consistently consume, as both a child and an adult? Almost zero. The girls are doing fine on their own.

As a young gay boy growing up in the late 2000s, having this show to watch as a kid really unlocked a love of aesthetics within me that I keep to this day. Even now, I love going back to the early seasons of the show and just watching them for the sake of finding fashion inspiration (as well as enjoying the extreme campiness of the story). It's insane just how well everyone in the show dresses, even background characters have such distinct outfits that I can pull from and wear IRL with little to no issue.
What I like to say about shows like these is that "they don't treat the audience like they are dumb even though its for kids and thats what makes it great." Even music can treat kids as if they wont hear if something sounds bad. Its also one of those things that can make parents find kid shows annoying. *to add on, I think the new Winx reboot is treating the new audience like they are dumb and thats why it looks the way it does and so many things like Cloud Tower and Kiko are different. Even the outfits seem to treat the audience like they wont be able to tell the girls are friends unless they have something in the way they dress thats super similar (so far their use of pink).
The new season of totally spies does the same. "It's for today's kids" means it's almost talking down to kids.... and it's barely even a girls show anymore. It's gotten progressively more neutral since season 3
I’m 26 and I never watched Totally Spies as a kid, but I literally just started watching it a few weeks ago and I LOVE it. It’s so fun, entertaining, funny and the characters are so fun and feel like 3 dimensional realistic girls to me which I feel like is rare with cartoons for girls (which I think is why I never watched them as a kid cuz I didn’t relate to being very girly when I was younger). Plus i love the fashion too. It’s such a perfect escapism show with emasculate vibes lol.
First off, love the Geraldine outfit, 12/10. Secondly, a Deep Dive on another of my gulity pleasure shows growing up. As a young boy growing up in the early 2000s, Totally Spies, Winx Club and Code Lyoko were my absolute favourite shows. 7:34. Amen to that. I really miss when TV shows and cartoons had 20+ Episodes per season that were spread out. But the age of Streaming has unfortunately murdered that format in its sleep. Although one thing I cannot stand is how Totally Spies has developed this weird reputation as a "Fetish Show" when the vast majority of stuff happening are the typical scenarios, tropes, and gimmicks you'd find in any other episodic action comedy show. But because Totally Spies is anime-inspired with some (not much) fanservice, suddenly it's a "Fetish Show". People nowadays have their minds in the gutter.
Honestly the fetish stuff? Fat chance people watched that as children and it became their thing and its easy to blame a kids show. Also a show that has been running for that long will eventually have some questionable moments.
While I don't agree with the stupid "everything is fetishized" take, I have to have to play devil's advocate a bit: I definitely remember being a prepubescent boy and looking at the spy suits and thinking "wow, shiny tight fitting bodysuits with boots is a look I like a lot on girls"

Totally Spies being inspired by Cat’s Eye makes so much sense that I’m surprised I never just jumped to that conclusion. I personally enjoy that show but can see why someone wouldn’t. The 80’s anime art style is just one of my favorites and it’s just oozing with it. I’m just upset they replaced the English VA’s in Season 7 of T.S.’s when they had been playing the characters for over a decade by the time the sixth season came out and they were still playing with them. I can never respect when actors who basically gave life to the characters for so long are replaced just to save money. Great video!

About TS toys: I vividly remember seeing a commercial for toy heart backpack when i was around 6 or 7, and i BEGGED my parents to get it for my birthday only to receive a bottle of body wash instead. My disappointment was immeasurable lol

I know my parents would always explain and ask about my second choice if they couldn't get something for a birthday or a Christmas. 🥰😊This came out when I was in elementary school.It's iconic. I love how the girls aren't slut shamed for dating different guys per episodes and crushing all over many hot guys. In a world where the guys in anime etc would go after multiple girls. I love how they are strong girls who take charge and can free themselves from getting caught with wits and strength no need for a man free them. Never been into shirtless he-man, WWE or gi Joe. Something about the girls being imperfect and quirky is charming. The way the girls even have different clothes/Pj's is a great detail reminiscent of Disney's The Weekenders(still not on Disney plus smh) Sam's voice actor is amazing in all deliveries and she will be very much missed by me in the new season. Slut shaming and being boy crazy aren’t the same thing though. Maybe it’s how I define it, but the girls, especially Clover since she had more romances, weren’t doing a lot (prob due to it being a show for young and older girls in the early 2000s). If they like the dude, they would make the first move or wait for the guy to and if it didn’t work, it’s on to the next or doing their own thing. Many shows that had FMCs have some element of a love triangle or having a constant relationship (WOWP comes to mind), but even then I haven’t heard of anyone accusing Alex of being a slut when it came to Mason and the other guy. 😂but that’s a whole new term compared to the show, but I haven’t heard fans say anything like that about it. You hear more about the dumb fetish theory from people.
im 19 and born and raised in boston. ive always loved totally spies and grew up watching it. even from a young age i understood that their beverly hills was a parody and that made it super fun for me. also the racial diversity without emphasis on it has always been super refreshing for me because racism is a constant problem here. on a light note my favorite detail is them having parody names for businesses like Cacy’s instead of Macy’s
my favorite thing about this show is how much they lean away from "not like other girls" tropes. this was one of only a few shows in my childhood (kim possible is the other huge inspiration for me) where you can be girly AND badass at the same time. and oftentimes their knowledge of girly things is what saves them, instead of it being a hindrance. that message is so, so important but very rarely touched on in children's media. a lot of shows of the 2000s especially have a main trio where it's 2 boys and a girl, and the girl only fits in with them because she rejects all things girly. sam in danny phantom, for example, or trixie in american dragon: jake long. or even toph in atla getting along with aang and sokka and making fun of katara for being girly and "prissy." this show is the total opposite of that, and i love it so much for that.
I think this comment just made something click for me, and forgive me, but in order to explain I need to traumadump just a little. I didn't grow up with a safe maternal figure. In fact, she was quite the opposite. She loathed men and attracted other women who felt the same way. It royally messed with my ideas of what is feminine and masculine. I never quite understood why I was always so drawn to media featuring female protagonists that just have their shit together. Maybe I was looking for something safe, something that contradicted the overwhelming evidence my real life gave me that women were unsafe.

Omg i remember i used to have a subscription to their magazine, and one day a letter came with it that ‘’the spies had too many missions to keep up with the magazine’’ and it was cancelled💀💀 probably because there weren’t enough readers here in the Netherlands. i cried so much because i was so upset that the magazine from my special interest was getting cancelled and i don’t think i ever recovered lol

This was a great video and really enjoyable to watch. As a boy who grew up only seeing commercials of this but never watched it themselves, this was a cool deep dive into a series I otherwise would have totally forgotten about. I really appreciate the animator's attention to detail on costume design and environments. That kind of stuff adds so much to a story and makes it so much more memorable. I had no idea the series is still ongoing. Might have to check it out myself!
My opinions on Jerry have also changed upon rewatching as an adult. I did like him when I was a kid but there were definitely episodes that made me side eye him because what the hell was he doing??? He made many questionable decisions and was too grown to be behaving like that.

They're a group of songwriters and producers known as the mastermind behind the success of Uk girl group "Girls Aloud" 🩷😌 Personally, I think season one and two were the best. Season three and four were good but something was off ... To this day I don't know what it is. Sam was/is my fave but I've always had a soft spot for clover ... Oooh I think the Art direction title card was the one for season 1 episode 1! Oh no I'm almost certain to have heard the 70s bike ost in an episode before! And no, we never had a squeaky issue in french, they've always sounded the same! The only "issue" with the french dub is the cast is very limited, so we get recurring VAs for completely different characters. It's a bit of a non-issue imo because not only it forces the VAs to make fun random accents which adds to the comedy, but also it's not even a recurring problem in french dubs it's basically the norm. Also where is the unused theme for s5 that we luckily had in french lol, it's the most Totally Spies song ever made "woohp is shiet at finding anything" I hope you didn't count the amount of times one of the villains escapes from their "high security" prison lol, at this point it's more of an open house than anything Wait, wasn't Sebastian also the villain behind the iconic rave parties and subsequent outfits? Also I'm a bit surprised you didn't include Clover's cousin, Virgile, and the president's daughter, they're all annoying but iconic One other thing that annoys me, in the early seasons Woohp was working with the government, but then it's forgotten entirely and the spies have to infiltrate structures? For the longest time I thought Totally Spies was an American made tv show, but something seemed kind of off, but couldn't figure out why as a kid. Then years later I found out it was a French/Canadian made show with it's home setting based in the US and then rewatching some episodes I noticed that it was giving off an European vibe with some episodes. I'm glad you mentioned it cause I thought I was just overthinking this.
As a man my entire life. I loved Totally Spies, Power Puff Girls, Winx Club, H20, Kim Possible, Teenage Robot, Hannah Montana, Lizzie Mcguire, As Told by Ginger, Brace Face probably 1 or 2 more im forgetting but yeah definitely all making the Childhood Top Memories list. I watched these with no shame around my family & never saw them as girls shows everything was just cartoons/tv. Never thought to assign a gender to it except for something like Barbie.

Thanks to this breakdown I was finally able to pinpoint what always stood out about the spies: they feel like real people, even though the characterization plays with stereotypes. Like Clover is the most "girly" (so to speak), she loves fashion and love, but she's also very "tomboyish", Alex is the sporty one but she's sweet and soft spoken, Sam is nerdy but she isn't stuck in a book all the time, she loves to dress up etc... Like a real person who has different interests and layers

LIKE IT WAS A HOUSEHOLD NAME TRULY 😭😭😭 i even remember i watched it during a hurricane we were affected with (i forgot the year, maybe 2018's hurricane florence) while flipping back n forth from that to the weather channel. that show will FOREVER be so amazing to me and just the details, the story, EVERYTHING!! this deep dive was so amazing and i'm actually drawing to this video right now because i love long form content 😭 keep up the great work!

Totally Spies for me is another one of those good examples of strong female characters. The main trio are spies who not only know how to defend themselves and go into physical combat with the villains, but they also use their wits in order to get them out of sticky situations.
In addition to this, this show also allowed the girls to be fashionable and have slice of life moments which also represents in real life girl friend groups as well ❤ They’re like the sisters I wish I had 🥺
My fav thing about totally spies is all the outfits they were cuz most shows just kept the characters in the same outfits every episode and the girls are grew up and went to college

As a young gay boy growing up in the late 2000s, having this show to watch as a kid really unlocked a love of aesthetics within me that I keep to this day. Even now, I love going back to the early seasons of the show and just watching them for the sake of finding fashion inspiration (as well as enjoying the extreme campiness of the story). It's insane just how well everyone in the show dresses, even background characters have such distinct outfits that I can pull from and wear IRL with little to no issue.
What I like to say about shows like these is that "they don't treat the audience like they are dumb even though its for kids and thats what makes it great." Even music can treat kids as if they wont hear if something sounds bad. Its also one of those things that can make parents find kid shows annoying.
*to add on, I think the new Winx reboot is treating the new audience like they are dumb and thats why it looks the way it does and so many things like Cloud Tower and Kiko are different. Even the outfits seem to treat the audience like they wont be able to tell the girls are friends unless they have something in the way they dress thats super similar (so far their use of pink).
The new season of totally spies does the same. "It's for today's kids" means it's almost talking down to kids.... and it's barely even a girls show anymore. It's gotten progressively more neutral since season 3
I’m 26 and I never watched Totally Spies as a kid, but I literally just started watching it a few weeks ago and I LOVE it. It’s so fun, entertaining, funny and the characters are so fun and feel like 3 dimensional realistic girls to me which I feel like is rare with cartoons for girls (which I think is why I never watched them as a kid cuz I didn’t relate to being very girly when I was younger). Plus i love the fashion too. It’s such a perfect escapism show with emasculate vibes lol.

First off, love the Geraldine outfit, 12/10. Secondly, a Deep Dive on another of my gulity pleasure shows growing up. As a young boy growing up in the early 2000s, Totally Spies, Winx Club and Code Lyoko were my absolute favourite shows.
7:34. Amen to that. I really miss when TV shows and cartoons had 20+ Episodes per season that were spread out. But the age of Streaming has unfortunately murdered that format in its sleep.
Although one thing I cannot stand is how Totally Spies has developed this weird reputation as a "Fetish Show" when the vast majority of stuff happening are the typical scenarios, tropes, and gimmicks you'd find in any other episodic action comedy show. But because Totally Spies is anime-inspired with some (not much) fanservice, suddenly it's a "Fetish Show". People nowadays have their minds in the gutter.

Totally Spies being inspired by Cat’s Eye makes so much sense that I’m surprised I never just jumped to that conclusion. I personally enjoy that show but can see why someone wouldn’t. The 80’s anime art style is just one of my favorites and it’s just oozing with it. I’m just upset they replaced the English VA’s in Season 7 of T.S.’s when they had been playing the characters for over a decade by the time the sixth season came out and they were still playing with them. I can never respect when actors who basically gave life to the characters for so long are replaced just to save money. Great video!

Slut shaming and being boy crazy aren’t the same thing though. Maybe it’s how I define it, but the girls, especially Clover since she had more romances, weren’t doing a lot (prob due to it being a show for young and older girls in the early 2000s). If they like the dude, they would make the first move or wait for the guy to and if it didn’t work, it’s on to the next or doing their own thing.
Many shows that had FMCs have some element of a love triangle or having a constant relationship (WOWP comes to mind), but even then I haven’t heard of anyone accusing Alex of being a slut when it came to Mason and the other guy. 😂but that’s a whole new term compared to the show, but I haven’t heard fans say anything like that about it. You hear more about the dumb fetish theory from people.
im 19 and born and raised in boston. ive always loved totally spies and grew up watching it. even from a young age i understood that their beverly hills was a parody and that made it super fun for me. also the racial diversity without emphasis on it has always been super refreshing for me because racism is a constant problem here. on a light note my favorite detail is them having parody names for businesses like Cacy’s instead of Macy’s

my favorite thing about this show is how much they lean away from "not like other girls" tropes. this was one of only a few shows in my childhood (kim possible is the other huge inspiration for me) where you can be girly AND badass at the same time. and oftentimes their knowledge of girly things is what saves them, instead of it being a hindrance. that message is so, so important but very rarely touched on in children's media. a lot of shows of the 2000s especially have a main trio where it's 2 boys and a girl, and the girl only fits in with them because she rejects all things girly. sam in danny phantom, for example, or trixie in american dragon: jake long. or even toph in atla getting along with aang and sokka and making fun of katara for being girly and "prissy." this show is the total opposite of that, and i love it so much for that.
I think this comment just made something click for me, and forgive me, but in order to explain I need to traumadump just a little. I didn't grow up with a safe maternal figure. In fact, she was quite the opposite. She loathed men and attracted other women who felt the same way. It royally messed with my ideas of what is feminine and masculine. I never quite understood why I was always so drawn to media featuring female protagonists that just have their shit together. Maybe I was looking for something safe, something that contradicted the overwhelming evidence my real life gave me that women were unsafe.

This was a great video and really enjoyable to watch. As a boy who grew up only seeing commercials of this but never watched it themselves, this was a cool deep dive into a series I otherwise would have totally forgotten about. I really appreciate the animator's attention to detail on costume design and environments. That kind of stuff adds so much to a story and makes it so much more memorable. I had no idea the series is still ongoing. Might have to check it out myself!
My opinions on Jerry have also changed upon rewatching as an adult. I did like him when I was a kid but there were definitely episodes that made me side eye him because what the hell was he doing??? He made many questionable decisions and was too grown to be behaving like that.

Oh no I'm almost certain to have heard the 70s bike ost in an episode before! And no, we never had a squeaky issue in french, they've always sounded the same! The only "issue" with the french dub is the cast is very limited, so we get recurring VAs for completely different characters. It's a bit of a non-issue imo because not only it forces the VAs to make fun random accents which adds to the comedy, but also it's not even a recurring problem in french dubs it's basically the norm.
Also where is the unused theme for s5 that we luckily had in french lol, it's the most Totally Spies song ever made

For the longest time I thought Totally Spies was an American made tv show, but something seemed kind of off, but couldn't figure out why as a kid. Then years later I found out it was a French/Canadian made show with it's home setting based in the US and then rewatching some episodes I noticed that it was giving off an European vibe with some episodes. To just mention one thing, since I'm at that point in the video about Jerry. Remember the episode where Sam, clover & Alex got framed for robbing a bank and Jerry wanted to reprogram them with goddamn microchips in their brains. Thanks to this breakdown I was finally able to pinpoint what always stood out about the spies: they feel like real people, even though the characterization plays with stereotypes. Like Clover is the most "girly" (so to speak), she loves fashion and love, but she's also very "tomboyish", Alex is the sporty one but she's sweet and soft spoken, Sam is nerdy but she isn't stuck in a book all the time, she loves to dress up etc... Like a real person who has different interests and layers
