I'm glad they're singing the original lyrics, they're much creepier and make Margaret's perverse religion seem even more sinister and twisted.

@@catfish1616 theres a few more changes i think, including "go to the cellar and pray" which is WAY more creepy/badass, although i must say the original version when margaret yells that line, around 1:30 in this version ua-cam.com/video/v-65bgz4kN8/v-deo.html. I think it's interesting that they changed so much, even when the original lyrics were objectively better. My theory is that the original flopped so hard that they felt compared to change a lot of stuff. My personal favorite line that was tragically cut is in The Destruction (the song when carrie kills everyone). In the original, carrie does a little reprise of this song, saying "he will burn you he will burn you" etc, while she burns down the gymnasium, which is just too perfect. Sorry for the crazy long reply, in case you can't tell I feel super strongly about this haha

(I'm guessing that's at two points in the song: once when it became clear that this was from Carrie, a famously bad musical.
The other point was when Caroline Bowman got off the stage. And there's just no 'serious' way to blend into the audience.
Besides, the "villain party" was a very lighthearted event, (judging from other videos, I wasn't there.) )

People are laughing because this is a concert setting, and more of a comedic one at that ("Broadway villains party"). It's kinda weird to be suddenly thrown into this grim setting with such a powerful, highly emotional song. Naturally every audience tends to start laughing, if only out of nerves or the sheer surprise of seeing the actors start to actually perform the scene in front of their eyes. It's a pretty normal response which you see in almost every concert performance of "And Eve Was Weak". Don't blame them, you might have done the same lol

I love this performance; especially Julia: She let you know exactly what show you were watching, let you laugh for a second, and then stepped back into character until the last note was sung. Caroline; what can I say; very good beltress; I like in particular the moment where she holds the note on 'Mama', so that for a second Julia is singing a litany under her sustained power. Both of these women and their superb accompanist (I completely approve the change in tempo) made this scene work: If you ignore the laughter, this scene still slaps HARD, and that is why I keep coming back to it.

The show needed to take its key from And Eve Was Weak and embrace its horror roots. I saw the 1988 production and the tone was wildly inconsistent. All it needed was some tweaking in the staging and a couple of new songs, and it could have been a success instead of Broadway's most notorious flop.

Overall I think the musical is terribly underrated due to its failing way back when, but some of the revivals are amazing.

Bow your head and pray, woman.
And God made Eve from the rib of Adam,
And Eve was weak and loosed the raven on the world.
(Mama, it's not my fault.) And the raven was called sin.
And God visited Eve with a curse,
And the curse was the curse of blood. Say it woman.
And God made Eve from Adam's Rib
And Eve was weak. (Mama, how could I know?)
    And Eve was weak.
And Eve was weak. (Why didn't you tell me?)
And God made Eve to bear the curse.
The curse of blood, (It's not a curse.)
    The curse of blood. (Ms.
Gardner said it's something all girls go through.)
The curse of blood. (You should have told me!)
You're a woman now! Pray to heaven for your wicked soul!
The raven came to plague the world,
Its name was sin (It's not a sin)
Its name was sin (Oh, Mama, it's not a sin)
    Its name was sin, Begin!
And lust was how the sin began
The sin was man (I don't understand)
    Well understand (No!)
The sin was man (What have I done?)
    God has seen your sinning,
    Just beginning
    Pray for your salvation
    From Damnation
    Pray or
    He will burn you
    He will burn you
    The seed conveys the power
And it's come again (Mama, what is the seed?)
It's come again (Don't you care)
It's come again (That I started to bleed?)
    Until the seed is crushed
    The power never ends
    It never ends
    It never ends
(Mama, I was so scared and they all stared
Then I started crying I thought I was dying Mama!)
    (Please don't hurt me)
Have you no sense of shame?
Pray for mercy, get down on your knees. (Please don't hurt me)
    Satan's staking his claim
'Cause your soul is a hole of disease
I can see you inside (Don't believe with your eyes)
Full of sin, full of pride! (Those are lies, Mama, lies!)
That's how Lucifer fell (Mama, how could I know?)
    And you're headed for Hell
I won't let you go! (Mama, let me go!)
    Heaven hates a sinner!
    Hates a sinner (I'm not a sinner)
Save your soul from burning (Mama, stop it's burning!)
God, she's burning (Stop it's burning!)
    Pray or (No! Mama, please!)
    He will burn you (Stop!)
    He will burn you
And God made Eve from Adam's Rib
    And Eve was weak.
    And Eve was weak.
    And I was weak.
I prayed this day would never come,
    I should have known,
    I should have known,
    Now I'm alone.
    I'm so afraid
Oh Lord, I've seen this power before
The flesh is weak and I implore
    Father, don't forsake her
    Father, take her
    Cleanse and purify her
    With the fire
    And the power
    And the glory
    Forever,
    And ever,
    And ever,
    Amen
