The best thing about this video is a lot of Julia's emotion at the end is real. If you haven't heard the story, Julia was an unknown at the time. So when it was announced that she would be singing this iconic song, the audience's response was lukewarm. As you can hear at the end, she really won them over. She has said that the response she got was just amazing.
Bar none one of the most underrated Broadway actors of all-time! Does ANYTHING about this scream "JULIA!" to you? Even her voice seems to be manipulated just the slightest so that we aren't watching her person anymore. This is ALL her character! GOD! She's fucking brilliant! xD
I've literally returned to this video countless times since it was uploaded in 2010 and this is really one of the best gems of bway youtube. to whoever posted this, you're truly doing god's work :)
I love how she sings this. Before I first heard her version a few years ago, normally, I'm like "mehhh, it's okay" when others sing "People", but dayuuum, she was amazing. And the climax at the end, the whole one-breath part! How did she CATCH her breath after 3:56 let alone singing a million bars IN one breath?! Murney is phenomenal!!
Whoa now...Ms Murney has been one of my faves for a minute, but this is my first time seeing this. It just entered slot number two of my favorite live performances. The other being Linda Eder singing Vienna. Her acting here is superb. And her control is beyond. I'm floored.
Why does everything always need to be a comparison? Streisand was and still is great. Murney is great. They're great in different ways, because they both have unique talents. Julia is a whole lot nicer to work with though, I can guarantee.
If you did a little research you'd know that Barbra has worked with many of the same people for over 50 years. They wouldn't put up with it all these years if she was that difficult. It's called being professional. Be nice it's not that hard
That's what made this performance even that much more amazing is that she sang that entire phrase in one breath and gave it a scope and grandeur never heard before because no one sung it that way before. Outstanding!!!
Here after seeing Lea Michelle's boring version. Julia's version is just the best, right after Babs. Super dynamic, powerful chest belts and vulnerable moments as well.
Such a great voice. But her attack on the song in some spots is just too harsh. This magic of this song is in it's subtlety. She would have been a great Fanny.
when I watched this, the person standing next to her looked like an Ewok before he turned his head. I really didn't know if it was a parody or something. LOL!
@drawntotrouble When Murney has one millionth the success of Streisand, then you can make such a childish, inane comparison. Just how many records has Murney sold lately? But you know better than anyone, of course.

The audience reaction says it all. Wow what a performance.. She was already incredible, after this they remembered her Name..
“ARE THE LUCKIEST… people”
OMG such a well executed dynamic change! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

14 seconds of pure belt!!
Unbelievable and heartbreaking performance! The longing for love in the song! I keep coming back to this. Brava Julia!

Gah! The emotion she puts into not only the character, but in her singing voice! What a talent! A star!
Knocks Barbra Streisand's out of the PARK!! I love Julia Murney so much. I wish I could hear her sing everything.
Sure. See a professional.
First time I’ve ever felt some real emotion hearing this song.
She's just incredible
Perfection! Loved the performance! ⭐️
Listening to his will never not give me chills
Haven't seen this one in forever. Thanks.
God, I love this woman......I wish she would come and perform in the UK...... so massively underrated.
That was freakin incredible!
Stunning...just stunning.
Not me coming back to this song _again_
Thank you for posting this! I'd been looking for it for the longest time.
4:44-4:57 one breath
Good God, the woman can belt.
Subito piano at 2:17...floors me EVERY TIME
So good!!!
And the she headlined on Broadway in wicked and the national tour

A-mAHzing.
4:44-4:58 in one breath was pretty damn effortless...

i had to listen to this again to cleanse my ears because i just watched Jennifer Lopez sing this
Where is there sheet music to this!!! I can find people, but they don't include the intro and the repeat at the end
I found one version but it's total garbage
The intro is in the complete Broadway vocal score. Julia however brings her own twists improvising with the melody.
@lcowles that's some dang good lungs. for real.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET THIS AS MP3 OR VIDEO?!?!?! BEEN LOOKING FOR 2 YEARS NOW...
Here after seeing Lea Michelle's boring version. Julia's version is just the best, right after Babs. Super dynamic, powerful chest belts and vulnerable moments as well.
No, that’s what i love about Julia. Don’t compare her. She nailed « Funny girl ». Streisand gave Fanny to us. Be respectful, please
born for broadway.
@drawntotrouble What a silly comparision. Utterly foolish. But Murney is an EXTRAORDINDARY talent.
daaaaang! she did better than barbaraaaa!! :o woooww that ending!!!!

Yikes!..... a very different yet convincing approach to the song for me... at any rate...
@BlueJeanBaby012 She's way too old to play Brice.....but a MUCH better choice than Lauren Ambrose. What a HUGE MISTAKE!

just because you can belt it doesn't mean you should.
It lacks the emotional depth of Barbra- and NO one can beat Barbra.
Oh boy, how atrocious. Fuck, people have no standards.
It is pretty harsh in places.
Barbra IS still better, she doesnt seem to even try while singing this song.
