    Is it legal to collect sea urchin and share it with friends who don't dive but want to try cooking with it? I like to share my harvest because I have a lot of friends who have disabilities and can't get out.

    • @92bagder

      Nope. That's like saying if you hunt an elk or go salmon fishing the people you share with have to have a license

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  11 місяців тому +9

      Yes that is completely fine as long as you only take your legal limit and the seafood is not traded for other items. Trading would still constitute a system of exchange and poaching syndicates have tried to get around buying and selling laws by trading (for instance) a new car for a bunch of seafood in the past. Since that example is still pretty much selling seafood, all selling and bartering of wild fish and game is prohibited. Gifting fish and game to friends and family is still totally legal though. Great question!

    The shot of you on the surface. Look at your weight belt clip / tongue, you can hook it on the kelp and either loose your weight belt or hold you under water. To keep this from happening, move the belt weight closer to the clip, to where the clip is under the weight.

    Dude, another great video man, Lost Coast Living's channel is Lost Coast legit! I'm what I call an advanced Kook when it comes to free diving the CA coast. I've always wanted to try spear fishing, I might just give it a shot after watching this, well after getting all the regulations down to you know. Anyway, Thanks for more great California content. Hope your Archeology work is going well, and remember "History's happening, Dig it!" (Sorry for the long comment. )🌲have a great day.

      Right on! Enjoy the dive, but be sure to go with an experienced diver! There is a lot that can go wrong out there and the learning curve to spearfishing is a lot higher than hook and line. It is very important to learn this activity alongside someone who can coach you out of the sticky situations that you will surely find yourself in out there from time to time. Be safe and thanks for watching!

    I have a Florida spearfishing channel that I've followed for years. I've been searching for an educational Westcoast one that has catch, clean and cook with good camera work and editing. I'm glad I finally landed on your YT channel the other day. A++ content! Thank you.
    I'm curious, if urchin are an invasive species causing this level of destruction on the native habitat and species, why does CA have such stringent regs on them?
    Many other states with invasive species such as feral hog or lionfish have no regulations on them at all. In some states you don't even need a hunting license to harvest them.
    I read your comment regarding crashing the urchin market but the commercial urchin guys would segue to another fish etc.
    Idk, I would like this to make sense to me. One would think that thinning the population by as much as 60 or 70 percent would make everything native more sustainable including the abalone. And the urchin market would level out through supply and demand. I was actually looking through your uploads for the urchin festival hoping to see a big sea urchin roundup.

      I am glad you found me and thanks for watching! Since purple urchin are native to CA and only acting like invasives in the absence of their keystone predator, and since the commercial urchin divers had it so hard, I am guessing the Cal DFW is somewhat skeptical of treating purple urchins like invasives (similar to hogs or lionfish). I really do not know though. In my opinion it does look like if we adopted an emergency "no bag limit" policy (exclusively on purple urchin) things could improve. CAL DFW is allowing for that in a few select coves as a test run so maybe they want a year or two of data in those locations before implementing that all along the North Coast? I honestly might take it up with the CAL DFW at a community meeting because I am also curious about it.

      Thanks for watching. It is good that commercial fishing licenses required to sell fish/seafood in my opinion. Most countries that do not require these licenses have very little sea life especially in the shallows. In many parts of Europe (for instance) one must dive 80 feet to get to small reef fish. It may seem like a lot of regulation here but there is a lot of marine fisheries biology data backing up why it is regulated this way.

      @@catchncookcalifornia1574 Understood and question; Do you need a weight belt or vest in tropical climate waters where it's warmer?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  11 місяців тому

      @@markopolo945 Very good question. If the area has warm enough water that no wetsuit is required, then you would not need a weight belt to balance the buoyancy of neoprene as you would not be wearing a suit. That being said, many folks in tropical waters will wear a 1-2mm thick suit to help keep their body from being exposed to fire coral or stinging jellyfish and add some warmth at the bottom on very deep dives as the water tends to get cooler below the thermocline. In this latter case the 1-2mm thick neoprene would need a few pounds of lead on the belt to balance it out. When I have spearfished in tropical waters in the past I have mostly worn a rash guard and shorts but I did get stung by quite a few jellies.

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  11 місяців тому +1

      If you are not a strong swimmer I recommend getting fins, mask and snorkel and practicing at your local pool with a lifeguard present until you feel that you are a strong swimmer (at least with that gear). Then I recommend taking a PADI freedive class or a level 1 performance freedive class and then linking up with an experienced diver to learn the ropes in the ocean on the calmest of calm days. A lot can go wrong out there so it is very important to go with someone who can help get you out of sticky situations.

The back of the CA DFW Ocean Fishing Regulations Booklet will also have that info and might name specific areas you are thinking about fishing. oehha.ca.gov/advisories/statewide-advisory-eating-fish-california-coastal-locations-without-site-specific-advice

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  11 місяців тому +3

      I think it would defiantly help the seaweed but would also likely the sea urchin fishery's already threatened economy. As I hear it the sea urchin divers on the North Coast have had to apply for federal bailout aid due to declining uni quality as a result of kelp forest die offs and lack of food for urchins which translates to lower urchin yields. The long and short of it is that the situation is incredibly complex and as of now it seems that the best way for us to help is to go harvest more sea urchins to eat and give to folks who will enjoy them!
