- There are hundreds of cruise ships at sea, but only one of them, off the coast of New England, is making waves and history for women. Kate McCue is on her maiden voyage at the helm of the Celebrity Summit. She's leading the 14-day cruise with more than 2,100 passengers and a crew of about 950. CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg spoke to the pioneer for a story you'll see only on “CBS This Morning.”
I met her on a 14-day New England/Canada cruise. She is so much fun, so gracious, and even served coffee to passengers. Every boss should be so great!
I worked with her on the Rhapsody of the Seas in 2013, she is truly an amazing person.

Just finished 11 nights to the Carribean on the Equinox - and will say without a shadow of a doubt that Captain Kate is THE BEST captain we've ever sailed with. She is just so personable, and approachable - and her daily mind bender quiz's are superb. Celebrity definitely have a serious asset on their hands with Capt Kate.
What would we do without those amazing dads who tell us the magic words..."if you're willing to work hard, you can be anything you want"!
As a Captain myself, I am very proud of her. She deserves praise. And, I bet she will not abandon ship like that chicken-hearted liar of the Concordia.

@@BajanNatureMysticDolt Acosta Concordia that ran aground presumably because the captain wanted to get in close to shore to impress his girlfriend with the view. After it ran aground, he left the ship while there were still passengers on board. I forget how many people died.
Met Captain Kate (and Bug Naked) when she made Celebrity Summit's inaugural call on Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She is an absolute gem!
She is the best. I had the privilege to meet her on one of cruise. On the Celebrity Summit. A very nice person, sociable and friendly. I had a great time. ⚓🛳👍
I meet with Captain Kate a few years back right she was married and still on vacation she dropped her go pro camera in the water at Peggys Cove, and told me all about drying it out. Loved the Ship cruise with Captain Kate ❤️🌈.
Met her on the Summit; she's great! And had a wonderful cruise to Canada!
And every male captain is better then she is. So what is the aim of such artificial "achievements" ? Women will never be comparable to men in such jobs, because one of the most important tasks of the captain is to manage the male staff. And believe me: this is something beyond any possibilit of a woman. No man will listne to the orders of a woman.

Yesterday (December 6th), Celebrity Summit made it's inaugural call to St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). The SVG Tourism Authority interviewed the Captain Kate McCue. Maybe 2 years later in a small island most have never heard about; but no CBS, you're not the only channel we'll see/hear the story!

I did a double take just after handshaking being the third most important part of her job. That was Captain Kate’s husband! As for Lisa Lutoff-Perlo: girls this is a super star. When I grow up I want to be either Captain Kate or Lisa L-P 😊

Shes the first captain "Female Captain" to be the Master of a Cruise Liner lol they often forget to define that part but i am so proud of females as Masters
Thus the difference between boats and ships.
I doubt the vast majority of those women would be able to handle a mega cruise ship! She trained for almost 20 years! I think she's very much earned all of the recognition ❤️
It's an amazing job. Refreshing to a real Captain who also happens to be a woman and not the fake ones circumnavigating around the world all in the name of sailing to see places. It's a great career, what's not to love about Captaining a big ship like that.
The chance to see places is a great reason to become a captain..

Sad that shes the first woman in 2015 thats its taken all these years for a woman to become captain. Good for her though. Hope she captains many trips to become.

I can't wait until the first woman submits her mandatory draft registration card. It's long overdue.
The only reason, she is the first captain in 2015 is, that women prefer to stay home, where it is warm and safe.
She looks like a guy though, maybe born male. She is also missing not only some pounds to look like a male captain, she is missing some pounds to look like a normal human.
Also she is just the first American woman..I think there are a few from other nations. But never the less a big milestone.

Just got off of the Summit, and Captain Kate is an absolute shining star. BUT!! I do worry that the cruise industry is going to discriminate against men and say behind closed doors. Yea, we are looking for THE MOST QUALIFIED, so long as it's a woman. Comments aren't neccesary. Time will tell the truth if we start to see female Ship Masters.....

styldsteel1 just because you see an increase in the number of women at the top of their profession doesn't mean men are being discriminated against. It can just as easily mean that since women know they're going in to a field which is overwhelmingly male they have to work hard to prove themselves and they end up being top of their class and a better qualified candidate.
It can, but it doesn't mean that. If there is a job competition and a man an woman are the top candidates, most of the times the woman will get the job, because not choosing her is politically incorrect. She may complain that she is discriminated based on sex. Many grow in the hierarchy this way. I work in the same marine industry and have seen it many times. And exactly those playing the woman's card are the most useless ones. They just have one more weapon in their belt. The girls who do the job and deserve to get promoted, they are ok and dont play I AM a WOMAN in the men's world. We accept any good professionals no matter man or woman, as long as they the job and work hard.

People tend to forget that women are typically better under pressure, don't display machismo, and are more emphatic. Much better in these command positions.
I don't think the passangers are that shocked because I doubt they know she's the first woman Capitan... I've went on one cruise and I didn't know there was no female Capitans... My Capitan was a old man but if it was a woman I wouldn't of even have known this...
