  • Today on Adventures and Things we journey back to my hometown of Picton, Ontario, Canada. We go on what the locals call a horn trip. We check out the Sandbanks Provincial park, Point peter, The sand dunes, and all sorts of other neat places in Prince Edward county, Ontario.

    Very interesting. I was born in the old Picton hospital (Hill Street), now demolished. I remember when cows filled the fields, not vines, and when cheese factories were everywhere. I also remember hearing of how proud people were of their "boys" who were in service during WW II, with both Picton Heights and the Mountain View airports playing such an important part in the war efforts. Thanks for putting so much detail into this video. (And for heaven's sake: watch out for poison ivy when you're on those dunes!)

    • @AdventuresThings
      @AdventuresThings  9 місяців тому +2

      Thank you, way back when. I think my Grandpa had some cows roaming his field back in those days. They are out in Waupoos, which is also wineries mostly and cideries. Yes I need to watch out for that poison ivy, I forgot all about it until my friend reminded me. You still around the county or moved on?

      @@AdventuresThings Hi there. No, I moved from that area around 1970. I live in that big place that people don't like, (starts with "T") and my friend from Picton complains about the tourists from there who clog up the roads and take up parking spots, and who make it difficult to get anywhere near the Sandbanks. I don't go back much as I no longer have family in the area, but I'm always amazed when I hear about the fancy restaurants with high prices when it used be that the Riviera (down past the Regent theatre) was one of the main spots to eat. The County is such a pretty area and for so long, it was sort of like a hidden secret, but not now. I don't think I could live there again due to the lack of doctors. There isn't even a walk-in clinic, and a friend has to go to Picton ER when he needs medical help. Would you consider moving back?

    • @AdventuresThings
      @AdventuresThings  2 місяці тому +1

      @@sashineb.2114 hey sorry for such a late response I didnt see this. I have thought about moving back but I dont think I could. I do miss it sometimes but I think its because I look back at it and romanticize the place instead of looking at it practically like lack of doctors and no walk in clinic. Which really are big factors.

      @@AdventuresThings Hi there. You're right that the lack of doctors and no walk-in clinic are big factors. Who wants to drive to Belleville or Kingston to see a doctor (if they can get one)? I couldn't move back, either, and that includes Belleville. Having access to a doctor means everything, especially as we get older.

    Always come back to this video or it pops up in my feeds again. Tourism sure has changed much here. I started doing 360° videos of The County as my content. My little videos don’t make any kind of impact on gaining tourism further. That’s coming whether I do a video or not. My goals are to get in and around everywhere for those in nursing homes and the elderly living at home still that can’t get out anymore. Many of the locals are enjoying the content. There are still some that have negative comments based on “Don’t add to the tourism”. At my age, I don’t care anymore. It’s changing and it’s not stopping. Now that Base31 is here and going to build a 7500 home small city of its own, I’m capturing the county now before it’s all changed.

    • @AdventuresThings
      @AdventuresThings  Місяць тому +2

      Ya tourism was changing the landscape even when I lived there. That was 80’s, 90’s. When I left in 2001 you could see the changes happening. There’s not a lot you can do about it now. It something that happens. Enjoy it while you can.
      The funny thing is I never intended this video to be any sort of tourism video, it was meant to be my reflection on growing up there and coming back years later. It is a beautiful place that I feel very fortunate to have experienced before it changed too much. Its good to hear you are capturing it now. Its cool that other people can experience the county through your vids as well. Take care and enjoy the next few weeks of the county before it gets too crazy
