The "Paraguayan National Anthem" (Spanish: Himno Nacional Paraguayo) is the national anthem of Paraguay. The lyrics were written by Francisco Acuña de Figueroa (who also wrote Orientales, la Patria o la tumba, the national anthem of Uruguay) under the presidency of Carlos Antonio López, who, at the time, delegated Bernardo Jovellanos and Anastasio González to ask Figueroa to write the anthem (Jovellanos and González were commissioners of the Paraguayan government in Uruguay).
The lyrics to the song were officially finished by Francisco Acuña de Figueroa on May 20, 1846.
It still remains unclear who was responsible for the creation of the music. Some sources claim that Frenchman Francisco Sauvageot de Dupuis was the composer, while others claim it to be the work of the Hungarian-born Francisco José Debali (Debály Ferenc József), who composed the melody of the Uruguayan national anthem. What it is known for sure is that it was the Paraguayan composer Remberto Giménez who in 1933 arranged and developed the version of the national anthem which remains in use by Paraguay today.
Though the national anthem has many verses, usually only the first verse followed by the chorus are sung on most occasions. Due to the song's length, the wordless introductory section and the latter half of the first verse are often omitted for brevity when the national anthem is played before a sporting event such as a soccer game.

The First stanza is one of the most depressing in Latin American Anthems
As a paraguayan I can say we did that on purpose because the melody was made after in 1938 after Triple Alliance War and Chaco War so we were in a somekind of "post-punk" moment when the original melody of the Anthem (a more happy one) was changed... for this.

No, the Uruguayan anthem is a little bit different yet it was partly made by the same person (Francisco Acuña de Figueroa).
The Paraguayan people had various national music throughout their history.
1) National March (This music was used without lyrics between 1814-1840 during the "perpetual dictatorship" of Dr. José Gaspar Rodríguez, and finally acquired a lyric in 1842, although at that time it was already replaced by other music as paraguayan anthem). ua-cam.com/video/ts8Vk3tlgY4/v-deo.html

3) First OFFICIAL Anthem (This is the hymn that Paraguayans remember as the "first", forgetting the previous two, because it has the lyrics of our current hymn, albeit with a happier melody, and also that this was the first OFFICIAL legal hymn . 4) The "Ocupation" Anthem (After our defeat against the Triple Alliance [Empire of Brazil, Argentine Republic and Republic of Uruguay], our country was occupied during the period 1870-1876. Between 1873-1876, this was the national anthem that the occupants of the war imposed on us. The lyrics were written by an Argentine and the melody by a Brazilian. The music even begins with a funereal tone that I don't know if it was condolence for our defeat or a way to humiliate us. 5) CURRENT Paraguayan Anthem (The anthem we both already know, the "DEPRESSING" one; The melody was created by the Paraguayan musician Remberto Giménez in 1933, selected in 1934 by the national government as the new anthem but

BTW, I actually like my current Anthem. I do not know if it is because stoicism as a way of life is taught too much in Paraguay that we easily tolerate learning the miseries of our past, our multiple dictatorships, revolutions and civil and international wars, and even our current social precariousness. I think that current music reflects a lot the stoicism with which the country has developed culturally during its 210 years of history. Dictatorships, revolutions, civil wars, international wars, natural disasters, Coups d'état? The Paraguayans be like: "What does it matter, life goes on".
