I can make profit off a whole submission without getting any PSA 10's... it's all about the specific cards that are graded and know what collector's have an interest in. Find a niche and get really good at knowing how those sets grade then expand.
Keep in mind, the only one who earns money for sure is PSA, with grading fees more then double of CGCs, it is unlikely that they do not earn a pretty fortune.
100%, they are making bank on the hobby. I don't know how they managed to position themselves the way they have. They aren't objectively better than other graders, but they certainly have managed to corner to market

I think the part you say about finding a niche and expanding from there is great advice. Find the spots that work and gradually spiral out from there.
Grading is a scam. PSA siphons at least $25million a month from the hobby.
