As a kid in the 1970s, my most favorite thing to do was look at models in the toy section of department stores. Seeing these Tamiya boxes bring back the feeling I had as a kid seeing them!
Throughout the years Tamiya has stood for Quality with a capital Q. Mr. Tamiya srt a standard to which they have adhered ever since. Thanks for posting this, you gave me ideas for new dioramas....
Tamiya box art is the best. Fantastic paintings that stir the imagination. If you are ever in Shizuoka, Japan, visit the Tamiya corporate offices (South of Mt Fuji) that have a museum (including commissioned paintings for the box art!) and a great gift shop. (Appointment needed, your hostel/guesthouse/hotel can do this for you) There is a well tended koi pool right outside. I found out where the factory is and walked to it. You can get the whiff of the plastic that is being poured into molds and see the trucks rolling out with outgoing shipments.
I was a huge fan of Tamiya in the 80's and I built 100's of their kits. In the early 90's I became a fan of Dragon which put the older Tamiya kits to shame. I haven't built models in decades, I guess I should check out Tamiya again.
I've only recently got back into it after over 40 years and I've been having so much fun. There are so many "How to" vids on here that I have achieved some results that I never thought would be possible.
You should. Loads of Dragon armour and figure sets here, but I have to say Tamiya are just fun to build AND anything circa 1990-'95 and later to the new tools today generally have sufficient detail for me. Tamiya's current figurines are pretty much up there with Dragon Gen II IMV.
Wow this is youth sentiment for me,i am 54 now and building ww2 Figures ,tanks, vehicles and planes whas one of my Favorite Hobby`s in the 80`s,Tamiya is one of the best brands, but i also like Revell and Italeri..........
Throughout the 80's and early 90's I lived and breathed 1:35 Tamiya. All the new stuff they now do is awesome but these days I'm so boss-eyed I'd make a total pigs ear just opening the box.
Thanks for the video. I incidentally, order the US scout infantry recently. Your mention of Shep Paine brought back some fond memories of his books on modelling.
Tamiya despite the high quality of their rival model manufacturers are without doubt the best . Always loved their models , always of the highest quality and go together like a dream . An excellent company o.k. a bit pricey but you pay extra you get the best .
Finally!! .. Back in the day I had to use US era Vietnam war mortar crews to hold up my Euro winter scene of December '44. It just wasn't right! Love these.
British? What about commonwealth in general? As a Canadian, I won't mind buying a British set that came with Canadian markings...but even the aftermarket is slacking. Yes I can buy a British Sherman and crew, but now I have to spend $60+ for aftermarket tank and infanty markings? I could buy a decent stock model for that price, and can have just as much fun building it. We had the same gear as you Brits! Don't you guys remember you gave us all of the gear we were using? I mean, I guess I can't complain too much, because options for me are faintly out there...but I guess I'm just some guy rambling on...
@@UA-camSaysThereCantBeTwoRyans Agreed. Really what I meant by British is the coalition of forces in the commonwealth. It covers most theatres and isn't recognised enough imo
I discovered Tamiya in the late 1960s and was floored at the quality that put Revell and Monogram to shame! Glad they've really continued the soldiers lines. Someday I may return to modelling when I have the space.
I got the US tank crew and it's the best plastic figures I've seen. Only Masterbox comes close. I didn't know that the new infantry sets were similar; I'll have to check them out.
I have assembled more than a hundred sets of Tamiya military figures and vehicles. And now my sons have taken over the baton and have increased the quantity.
I think due to the quality of resin and 3d printed figures manufacturers using plastic are having to up their game. Some nice sets for Shure and a nice review.I will certainly be looking into these sets.🐒🐻🤗👍
Tamiya has certainly come a long way when you think about their awful old 1970s/1980s figures. They’re a great alternative to $20 resin figures. I understand your point about the usefulness of more static poses to stick on a base next to a vehicle, but there’s a real dearth of good quality figures in action poses to help you create drama and tell a story.
Tamiya's simple attempt to 3D scan a person and create a 1/35 scale injection kit was successful. Miniart's kit had few failures in human body modeling due to the extraordinary craftsman's modeling technology. Tamiya has a 3D scanned model with comparable quality. I am also looking forward to seeing how the lineup will be expanded in the future.
Good channel ,the tamiya figures are a lot better now,I think because, the likes of miniart ,master box ,but name a few I have a fair few figure sets ,mainly tamiya, and a few others.
Thanks for posting this! If I can make a small suggestion, next time could you take the decals out of the wrapping when you display them? Hard to make out when they are covered with tissue and plastic. Just a thought, but otherwise loved this series and thanks for letting us see these sets before we buy!
That is the best I've seen of Tamiya model figures. Yes true they are getting better. The poses are very natural no strange positions. I'm soon ordering these sets. So far the best out of all.👍🇭🇲🦘✌️
i played with these as a kid, i think about the time i turned 12 i was painting them to give the more life, plus the 1/32in scale half tracks and airplanes that went along with that scale, and i finally think i gave them to a cousin of mine and never saw them again...............😢😢😢
I guess they felt the competition from MiniArt & MasterBox and realized they had to improve, people simply would not buy the old style figures any more.. Well, I still like them, admittedly, but the new setas are brilliant and a great improvement to those of old.. and the decals are absolutely excellent, I agree.. Now we just need MasterBox and MiniArt to follow suit with THEIR figures.. :)
The details are good and crisp from one who has built Tamiya kits since 1970 it saddens me that some figures are no longer available. Like the flak crew on the Early SDKFZ 7/1 Quad flack cannon with crew the were in winter clothing . You can still find the kit, but they have standard weight uniforms. Plus as far as I know the never made a Afrika Corps Tropica version of the crew. Just as they have a habit of discontinuing some models of weapons vehicle combo sets. I know that some sets get stale and don't sell well any more . But I think if the could do a bundle for a series like Anti Aircraft guns with crews single 2cm , quad 2cm. 3.7 cm and .88 mm flack guns. Or half tracked like a light 1 ton to the Famo series. Plus, you could do a vehicle series like the kluben , swimagen Horch Protze Ect. Because to me, it sucks to raid multiple kits to get the correct equipment, figures for a diorama, and when some are no longer discontinued from being offered, are getting costly just to rob parts. I would prefer to have to pay a bit more for, say, a "premium" version of a kit with enhanced build options and special metal parts . Example say a M113 APC kit is discontinued, the motor version is discontinued. But you can get the crew-served mortar weapon and crew figures. You can also get the M113 Acav versions. Why not since they both use basically the same chassis running gear. Why not design a slightly higher price point kit that would say all you to built say two of three kit options. But what the hey do I know, I have been building models for over forty-five years. I have seen some good trends in the industry and a lot of crap . One trend I've seen go the way of the dodo was, like, I stated, where you had the opportunity to decide what versions of the model you were going to build . Most of the packaged kits were a double kit, so you could build two of the same model (example halfthack) or make one troop carrier and one anti Aircraft model. Plus, you had extra parts for detail and building wrecked equipment. Tamiya used to offer their package series, but 99.96 % they are either sold out or discontinuing them.
Tamiya is tip of an Iceberg. There are many resin figures both poured & printed & branching off to other scales. 1/16 scale is on the rise. I have so many 1/35 specialty figures. August 30, 2023---Thanks for the video but didn't see you using a scale ruller on the standing figures. The reason for this is are they actual scale figures from the WW 2 time frame? I Googled this info and average height for Americans and Europeans was 5' 8" tall. Noticed size differences when I compared a Italeri German figure who was 6' tall. Dad was with Patton's army and he was 5' 8" tall. Japanese were 5' 6" tall. Into zombie/apocalypse dioramas now so it'll help having different sized figures after I modify them into civillians.
I like the fact that these models look so relaxed, so many opportunities for conversations, I got a couple of the new 40K Guard models really cheap (£10 -£16-ish), and the amount of "action" poses ruin quite a lot of the models, unless you intend to make them as Storm Troopers, which even then are in dire need of heavy conversion. I miss the FW relaxed Krieg and Elysian models... I will have to pick these up, these are just fantastic, exactly what I have been looking for.
Something about the US box was bothering me, it just didn't look right. Then I noticed the extra foot on the guy kneeling (right hand side) I know the foot belongs to the man behind but that mean one leg was significantly longer than the other.
due to age and infirmity my hands shake far too much for any kind of model building that I loved so much as a kid, is there any way that I could acquire a finished set of these, painted and decorated to put on my shelf as a moment of days long past
Yes, the recent figures by Tamiya are very good. But, like some of their 90s releases, you’re pretty much stuck with the poses they give you - they can be converted, but you need good skillz.
