- In this video you can see a BMW M4 which has a pretty unique sound. Normally M4's are mega loud with straight pipe, flaming exhausts, but this one sounds totally different and very nice in my opinion! Enjoy the video and let me know in the comments what you think about it!

Theres a video of a Austin yellow M4 with the resonated equal length midpipe on youtube.. sounds very similar. Sounds waaaay better than the non resonated most people choose👌
@@jortepap most people get the non-resonated one because the do stock catted downpipes but in this video the m4 had catless downpipes and active auto works says to do the resonated mid-pipe with catless downpipes. It is almost the same sound between the two setups.

Why the hell did BMW make the downpipes different length???
It’s actually the midpipes that they changed out to achieve this sound, and look up active autowerke equal length mid pipe and you’ll see how much more complex it is and why bmw may have not wanted to put in the extra RnD plus the extra amount of money to manufacture this into the process. God it sounds good though and they would have probably made the money back had they put something like this into the LCI f8X’s as half the m3/m4 hate is just in how bad it sounds.

The equal length midpipe is what changes the tone completely. You need an equal length exhaust to get the true inline 6 sound out of this engine. Resonated EL midpipe with stock downpipes sounds the best. The one in this video has catless downpipes too so it sound a bit too raspy.

"An inline 6 engine naturally has an evenly spaced exhaust pulse which results in a more smooth and full sounding noise. However, the twin turbo setup of the S55 engine while producing addition power has created a sound which sounds more like 2 independent inline 3's competing for noise than the throaty sound one would expect. The variance between the lengths of the front and rear down-pipes of almost a foot and a half creates unevenly spaced pulses so that when the merge in any form of crossover system whether stock, x-pipes, double x-pipes, single mid-pipe or rear-section solutions. Since the sound waves are moving at the same rate when they exit the system, these crossover sections are simply creating a higher pitched sound resulting in the annoying sound some have referred to as a weed eater sound. The current systems allow the banks to merge unequally pulsed sounds and after much research and testing (from many BMW experts) it was determined that equalizing the length of the exhaust pipes before mixing was a solution to this sound problem."

that farting sound is the DSC kicking in when accelerating.
Turn DSC off and you will have great, smooth sound.
Sounds horrendous, just leave it the way it is.
