The thing that I absolutely love is that- despite being on good terms- Pewtree and Troughton would keep up this act whenever they were together in public, just for the fun of it.
There was some tension between them in real life. Troughton had a pretty loose, improvisational approach - in every take he would do his lines slightly differently, ad-lib, just generally try out a lot of stuff and see what worked. Pertwee was incredibly precise - he liked to know exactly what he was going to say, but also what everyone else was going to say. When they did these multi-Doctor stories, any scenes that they had together they would drive each other nuts because their working styles clashed so much.
@@samueldixon9028 That might be somewhat true, but they also became quite close in real life. There was no true animosity between them whatsoever.
@@samueldixon9028that’s literally just like their characters 😂
@@shadowmaster8684 I feel like every Doctors personality is to a large part based on the actor, so that all makes so much sense :D
They famously had water pistol fights at conventions.
Imagine you’re in your 20s then suddenly your really short, young teenage self appears in front you telling you you’re an idiot and he is more capable. That’s basically what the Third Doctor is feeling.
That really puts it into perspective!
To be fair based on how adulthood is going my teenage self wouldn't be wrong in saying that.
I had a dream about that once. It was rather weird shaking hands with my past self and the feeling was mutual.
@@GESSO217 I had a dream like that too and she asked if I left my boyfriend at the time.
And, if you go a step further with this way of thinking when the First Doctor turns up on Three's monitor to lecture the both of them, that's the Doctor's child-like self telling them both to stop fighting - probably why the Doctor, in general, is so kind to children because he understands their naive wisdom in a way
This is one of my favourite moments in Doctor Who.
"It's a song by the Beatles"
"Oh? How does it go!"
"OH PLEASE BE QUIET!"
WolfieRich I love these two bickering. "Maybe I could explain", "Maybe you could...."
Um no, they said they moved his previous self out of his point in time and moved him forward into his own future. He wasn't revived, just moved through time. You know, time travel. WHAT THE ENTIRE SHOW IS ABOUT IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Am I the only one who really wants to hear Patrick Troughton play _I Am the Walrus_ on his recorder?
BEATLES FPR LIFE
WolfieRich Love I Am The Walrus.
"I see you've redecorated. I don't like it" seems to be the Doctor's favorite line
I don't know about it being his favorite line, but it is up there among "Reverse the Polarity" and "Would you like a jelly baby?"
I like how 10 said it to 11 in the most recent Doctor(s) reunion.
Louie Neira Well 10 was probably still a bit upset about 5 hating on his "Coral desktop" and wanted to do it to someone else for a change
That's what I thought!!!
Well 10th doctor said it to 11th doctor in day of the doctor
2: “No, no, let me explain it.” *says the same thing*
3: “You’re just confusing her, let _me_ explain.” *also says the same thing*
Love it.
The Doctor in a nutshell.
XD
I am he and He is me
and we are all together
Goo goo ka choo
All he had to say was "when I die I can change my body."
Naturally neither of the Doctors, omniscient as they are and having spent so much time on Earth and specifically in England, knows anything at all of The Beatles.
I do find it funny when the Doctor meets himself. It's never "Nice to see you!", it's always "go away, I'm busy!"
I mean, if a freshman me and current me where in the same room for some reason we wouldn't get along
And "you redecorated. I don't like it."
There's a longstanding fan theory Two dislikes Three because that face was forced upon him while Three dislikes Two because he let the Time Lords capture and exile him
However, whenever the Doctor meets his _own_ incarnation he always gets on so disturbingly well you expect him to get a room...
Self loathing game is THAT strong
Seeing Patrick Troughton as the 2nd Doctor here makes me sad so many of his episodes have been lost.
Revolver Ocelot He’s got a glass half full approach; nothing wrong with that.
Because the careless actions of the BBC in the 70s.
Well unfortunately bad storage capabilities plus "Creative Management" Equals terrible literary and visual problems.
It took I Love Lucy for people to realize that maybe people would want to watch episodes of shows again, and it took a while for tech and attitudes to reflect that...
@@homuraakemi103 Ha....I Love Who! The story of a time traveling alien who fights intergalactic crime with logic and technology. Episode one: Who loves Who? In his newly refound TARDIS the doctor gets smothered by eager British chicks and aliens all while making multiple trips to London.
I like when Jo mentions a song by the Beatles, the Second Doctor gets distracted and asks how it goes so he can play it on his flute (recorder).
+RogerWilco "Flute (recorder)"? You do know they are different instruments, right?
Patrick did have a Beatle mop top too lol.
I'd ask for the Beatles on recorder, but all us Americans who took music class know how well those things REALLY sound...
Andrewnuva199 What?
Recorder lessons are a frequent requirement in US elementary school music classes. All I remember from that experience is playing the tune Hot Cross Buns on the thing.
"It's a song by the Beatles"
"Oh how does it go!?"
"QUIET YOU"
Nightcore Master "oh please be quiet!"
Xxero Chronicles I'd pay good money to hear the Second Doctor's rendition of I am the Walrus.
"I'm he as you are he as you are me and we are all together!" XDD
Apparently, some of that tension is very real. Troughton was the kind of actor who loved and thrived off improvisation. He joked around a lot while working. Conversely, Pertwee took things very seriously. Acting was his job and he was focused on getting things done and doing them right (ie according to the script). Both are valid approaches but that caused some frustration for Pertwee and I suspect Troughton just loved every minute of it.
"Oh really how's does it go?" - one of the funniest DW lines ever.
That Beatles reference killed me. I'd kill to see the Second Doctor play a recorder version of "I Am the Walrus."
Benjamin Del Rosario
That would have been the best scene ever.
@@MaskedMan66 anything can be played on a recorder if you try hard enough
@@MaskedMan66 Yes it would be tricky but it could be possible who knows I am terrible at the recorder so I couldn't say if possible, but I know for a fact that it is possible to do just about anything as long as two things are true. One, you are simultaneously very determined and very bored and two, the thing you want to do is just the right kind of stupid and pointless but at the same time also amusing.
Would've been beyond amazing but incredibly difficult, especially never having heard the song. He would've had to extrapolate from Jo's singing its very complex melody and song structure.
Second Doctor: "Your effectiveness has now doubled!"
Third Doctor: "Halved more like.."

This is what I love about the concept of the Doctor regens meeting each other. How there always is antagonism and denial that each regen is even the same guy, leaving each of the companions, particularly the ones who carry over with each regen, meeting each other and being thoroughly confused. But by the end each regen works and plays off one another perfectly well and makes for a good time.
The thing I still fail to understand is if they are technically the same person how can one like the new TARDIS and the other not. I understand having different taste in food (different taste buds) and even different clothing choices (they look better in that outfit since they're in a new body) but I can find no reasonable explanation for how one like the TARDIS and the other doesn't.
Queen JellyBean
slightly different brains with the same memories? And in the time it took the 2ond doctor to go to the 3th doctor his taste of decoration might have changed.
They are the same person but not really. They seem to have some collective memories that they all have but generally they seem to forget their past self and become completely new person - new behaviour, new "fashion" sense, new favourite phrases etc. And usually after each regeneration they do know only their name and basic knowledge of time travel and very recent past.
They all love the TARDIS. They just might not like the other's taste in "screensaver" of how the TARDIS looks for that Doctor.
I always thought the 2nd Doctor was just saying he didn't like it just to irritate the 3rd Doctor, and since then it became a running Joke to Himself throughout his incarnations
I've never seen a Troughton episode but his acting style is delightful. He never fails to make me laugh and he's so honest and upfront, there's no filter on his mouth, and he does lots of crazy little things that are so characterful.
You should definitely check them out, he's my favorite Doctor!
@@Jordan3DSThat is somewhat complicated by the fact that a lot of Troughton's serials have been lost 😔
The second Doctor proved that the regeneration concept would work and that the show could go on. If Troughton had done a poor job or if someone else had been cast and done a poor job, we probably wouldn't have a new 36th series of Doctor Who starting this Spring!
Asleepforaweek he perfected his role as the second doctor
We really owe a lot to Patrick Troughton.
I do believe he is one of the most underrated Doctors. He was always an excellent character actor and could play any part convincingly, for example the priest in Colditz.
The same could be said about Hartnell for he was the first. Also Jon and Tom stayed 5 and 7 years, totalling 12 years. If it wasn't for them the show could have been cancelled before as well, and maybe never revived. In the end we owe a lot to the first 4 doctors.
It's definitely unfortunate that doctors 1 and 2 are not well know/held by many people.
I think Jon Pertwee is underrated to. I see all too many top Doctor lists with him ranked in the bottom 4. For me he's a top 3 all time Doctor.
"Oh dear, we ARE in trouble, aren't we?" I don't know why, but that always cracks me up.

Patrick and Jon…incomparable. Talk about masters of improv. They used to razz each other like crazy. So glad I went to all of those conventions.
No offense to Hartnell and Pertwee, but Troughton just stole the show.
Well I always considered Troughton to be my favourite of the first three.
To me, Troughton and Pertwee are ranked about evenly and I love all their interactions together 😊. Tom Baker is still the best though 😉
Βut Hartnell did nothing in this episode.
Hartnell died before this episode and it was a different actor but yes he did nothing
edit: i get it, he was alive during this, fuck off jesus. i don't need a 12th person coming to tell me
that was in the five doctors, he appeard in this one but he was to ill to play the character properly
The Second Doctor has my favourite line of the series altogether. From the Five Doctors.
"Strictly speaking I'm not breaking the laws of time, but I am bending them a little."
The second and fourth are always fighting for my number one spot.
"You never did bother much for rules, as I remember."
These two had such amazing chemistry. It really was a blessing to get to see them together in a Doctor Who story.
Jon Pertwee was the doyen of the Doctors for me, untouchable. But Troughton is the first one I can remember watching as a child and this clip reminds us of his brilliance. He somewhat stole the show whenever his Doctor returned, yet he was popular with the other Doctor Who actors. Tom Baker, an admirer, watched this adventure when getting to grips with taking over the role as the fourth version. He pinched the idea of jelly babies from Troughton, who used them in The Three Doctors (but not this clip). Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor, admitted that Patrick's mercurial version was his favourite. Though he breathes his own style into the part, Doctor no. 7, Sylvester McCoy, is very much a tribute to Troughton's impish second Doctor and that echo resurfaces again with Matt Smith's popular eleventh incarnation - floppy hair, bow tie and all. So the influence of Patrick Troughton's second Doctor has been immense and he had the daunting task of taking over and completely re-inventing a TV lead role from a much loved predecessor, for the first time. The success of the regeneration concept rested on Patrick's shoulders and he pulled it off magnificently.
Well said Tony
Pertwee is _my_ Doctor. I always feel his adventures are the best. It was only when I acquired the DVDs that I realised he'd had a profound influence on my outlook on life and my sense of ethics.
Yet Troughton is somehow still my favourite.
Like a pair of uncles, Pertwee is the one to admire and respect; Troughton is the one to love.
There would be no Doctor Who beyond the fourth season if it weren't for Patrick Troughton. Deciding upon a radically different actor in both appearance and temperment was an enormous risk and it's doubtful anyone else could have pulled it off, even if they had happened upon Jon Pertwee at that time.
In my youth Tom Baker was my favorite, because I saw a lot of his stories, and he was the favorite of the friend who introduced me to the show. But when I got into my 20s, and started renting Who DVDs via Netflix, and actually started seeing more of the show for myself, including all of the 3rd Doctor, he quickly and easily became my ACTUAL favorite. I love Tom, he has some great stories, but to me Pertwee's era was near-perfection. It was the strongest and most consisted era of the show, thanks to Terence Dicks and Barry Letts, and IMO even the weakest stories of his tenure are still rather good. No stinkers in the lot. And his best are some of the very best the show has ever had.
It was a similar deal when I got to start watching more 2nd Doctor stories, thanks (sadly) to the animation of missing episodes. He has easily become my #2 Doctor, as while he has some strong stories as well, I just really love his persona of the Doctor. Tom would be my #3, and grumpy, wonderful old Hartnell would be my #4.
But you're right, without Troughton's brilliant performance, Doctor Who would have died on the vine, meaning no Pertwee, no Baker. Just as without Pertwee's brilliance, the show wouldn't have soared to the greater heights it achieved in the 70s, he helped grow the much bigger audience that Tom inherited and enjoyed. Both highly integral actors to the show's history and success.
Troughton was Eccleston's favourite too, and you can see his influence in 9's performance

Pertwee’s gravitas and severity are what make him my favorite doctor. He adds so much intensity to the program. His stoic, brutal reactions to Troughton’s antics are just so fun to watch. It’s why I also love Capaldi.
I just adore when the Doctor is surly and bitter.
He was a serious, stern "take command" Doctor. But he could also be childish, and goofy at times. His comedy was more subtle. Which is funny, because Troughton came from a more serious acting background, playing a goofball Doctor, and Pertwee came from more of a comedy background, playing a serious Doctor. lol
Capaldi is a fan of Pertwee. I have to say if the new Doctors he is my favorite.

@@saberiandream316 it will be the fifties in 40 years
You know it just occurred to me. The Doctor could be his OWN companion. Now that would make an interesting season. Let's say one doctor was trapped for a season, out of sync from his own time frame, and you end up with two Doctors going on adventures together, trying to make the TARDIS whole again, as this has caused her to split into two entities. One flying off into the fabric of space and time while the doctors search for her in a more erratic incomplete TARDIS and less able to control than ever.
But the big question is, who would be the companion and who would be the Doctor? Thus, the title, Doctor Who. I don't know how that would work, but it would be interesting and weird. At times, one could rescue the other from peril. Other story lines would include the dilemma of having two doctors in the same time line and the effects it would have on the time stream.
larry potter Also known as: If you're the Doctor, and I'm the Doctor, who's flying the TARDIS?
TurtleCanUA-cam ' She seems to have a mind of her own. Still, some how the Doctor has a certain connection to the TARDIS. A kind of oneness, if you will. And let's say our dear TARDIS was to split into two, still being the same TARDIS, and one segment of it flies off into the fabric of time and space and the two Doctors remain in one state of time together, searching for it in an even more unstable TARDIS possibly needing one another to think clearly as Rassilon's First Law of Time has been broken. But as you pointed out, without the connection of the Doctor, Who indeed is running the run away TARDIS???? The Master??? Or the Dark Guardian??? THIS COULD BE THE BRINK OF NON EXISTENCE!!!!

I really enjoyed "The Three Doctors" largely because of the dynamic between himself and Pertwee on-set, and even Hartnell was used fairly well considering his small role as the 1st. Thank you for uploading this wonderful little scene.
Pat Troughton is my favourite Doctor. Shame that so many of his episodes are missing...
Well, at least he's been well compensated by being the Doctor who's returned for multi-Doctor stories the most...

The original multi-Doctor scene and still arguably the best. I just love everyone's reactions from Three being rather unhappy at seeing his past self, Two being deliberately annoying, Jo understandably getting very confused and frustrated at the lack of a clear and simple explanation and good old Sgt. Benton helping to clear things up.
Pertwee was actually my favourite Doctor before Capaldi came along (and even then it's hard to decide which is top), which makes sense given there are a lot of similarities between their Doctors.. I know he and his era is very divisive, especially regarding Three's rude and blunt attitude towards various people but his lack of tolerance and patience with the bureaucratic mindset he often had to deal with is actually one of the reasons I like him so much. Troughton is in my top 5 as well, which is saying a lot as I'm one of those who thinks all the actors have been very good in their own way. R.I.P. to both these amazing Doctors.
Imagine if the Pertwee and Baker Doctors had ever met in a Multi Doctor Story. I think 3 would have a even bigger issue with his 4th Self than his Second.
Considering the actors didn't like each other to begin with I think that would have bled a lot into their performance
@@kennyt4849 I have never once heard either actor state that they didn't like each other. Tom said he respected Jon immensely. I think that Jon was just ready to move on from the Doctor, and distanced himself from it for many years. Which sadly was also the case, for different reasons, for Tom. Tom was worn out from being the Doctor too long, yet also bitter because unlike Troughton and Pertwee, who both chose their time to leave (I honestly think BBC would have been fine, originally, with Pertwee playing the role throughout the 70s if he had wanted, as he was super professional and very popular), Tom was basically pushed out.
And it was sadly because Tom was bitter and at the time didn't want anything to do with Who, that he robbed us of getting to see 4 interact with 2 and 3 (or surrogate 1 or 5, for that matter). He at least admitted many years later, that he should have done Five Doctors, if nothing else for the fans.
Never would have happened. Tom did not like Jon and refused to appear at any convention he was at. I never found out how that rift occurred.
Jon never distanced himself from Who. He left the show because of Roger Delgado’s death. Jon and Roger were best friends.

11th Doctor: Oh, oh yeah! You never do!
6th Doctor: I can't concentrate with all this chronic lighting. I usually like to see what I'm doing.
7th Doctor: I don't like these stairs. Much too energetic... and what the heck are those things?
There was a similar moment in The Five Doctors, in what was formerly the Brigadier's office.
13th Doctor: You've redecorated. I really like it.
2nd Doctor in The Five Doctors said that first.
0:22 That was a good camera effect for it's time.
"You don't mind do you"
"yes"
"I didn't think you would"
I love the second doctor.
So THAT'S where Ten got the "I don't like it" from...
In _The Five Doctors,_ the 2nd Doctor tells the Brigadier's replacement that he doesn't like how he's been doing up UNIT HQ.
It’s a running joke throughout the franchise.
1:52 Oh yeah the second doctor would be interested in Beatles he's got the same hairstyle.
@BLEEMORALEST I think he's younger here than McCartney is right now Xd
His hairstyle was specifically a Beatles reference in the first place
Oh, and of course 2 and 3 squabbling is just golden.
Robert Lythgoe Both 10 and 11 make snide remarks at each other as well as Matt doesn’t like David’s dress sense, makes fun of his trainers. Not sure what they would make of Jodie’s outfit. The doctor has always dresses eccentrically if you notice because I think he is meant to have some slight quirky ness being a humanoid alien with two hearts. Each one has a different approach and personality though but essentially the same person, I didn’t like Colin Baker though, his was arrogant and cocky.
I remember watching this with my sister a handful of years ago, and with 30 seconds of meeting the Second Doctor, she exclaimed, “Oh my God, I love him!”
I always find it funny when the past Doctors say the don't like their successors TARDIS interior. It's really a paradox because eventually he WILL like it because they're the same person.
1:27 'Main't' is now my new favourite word.
spelled 'mayn't'
"It's a song by the Beatles,"
"Oh, how does it go?"
Aaaaand the fate of the universe goes out the window.
"OH. PLEASE BE QUIET"
Look is he really you
2:06 - Whoops, Patrick jumped in a little bit too early here to start his line, nearly speaking over Jon.
I miss this politeness in the new doctors.
I guess when I'm over 2000 years old I wont give 2 shits about someone's feeling either..
Revolver Ocelot but that wouldn’t make sense if 9-11 are barely reaching 1000
The new doctors are older and wiser
@@timm2396 the Doctor has always been an asshole and we love them
I love how well-spoken the Doctors were back then!
That's because all 7 of the original (IMO real) Doctors, were old school, classically trained actors.
@@Retrorevelations, It definitely worked for selling the doctor as a intelligent person.
Having good writers doesn’t hurt.
"Well, it's a bit hard to explain, but here you see,... I am he, and he is me!"
How does it go?
Please be Quiet!
“You’ve redecorated. I don’t like it.” I had no idea this was a reference
These two played so well off each other because they were good friends IRL ^^ I always love seeing Troughton and Pertwee on the screen together in both this and The Five Doctors.
"To Rassilon's Tower we go"
"Doctor, are you in pain?"
Lol
I loved seeing two with the brigadier in "The Five Doctors"!
1:46 An amazing moment for me because I am a huge Beatles and Doctor Who fan!
"I am he and he is me..."
"And we are all together, goo goo ki choo?"
"What?"
"It's a song by the Beatles."
"Oh really? How does it go?" (lifts recorder)
"Oh please be quiet!!"
... Priceless!!!
1:10 Third Doctor: Well, not so much one of them as one of us... One of me, to be precise. Second Doctor: Oh, no, no, no, no!
0:38 "Oh boy, you broke the TV..."
Patrick your grounded now we need new telly
I adore both these incarnations of The Doctor. Seeing them together getting snippy with each other is a treat.
Man I love Patrick Troughton so much! He just knows how to steal a scene!
"Ahh...you've done the TARDIS up a bit, I don't like it"
"Ahh...you've redecorated, I don't like it."
The 2nd doctor says that multiple times if I remember.
In the five doctors!
And the 10th Doctor have also referenced this line in The Day of the Doctor.
Excellent to see two of the very best Doctors together at once at the same time .
Ok it’s my first time seeing older Doctor Who
And the fact the joke “you redecorated, I don’t like it” was this far, I love it
I just imagining all of them together in the tardis, where the second doctor is playing the flute, and sassing the third doctor. The third doctor is trying to actually get stuff done, and jo is confused. Also what jo says about “i am the walrus” and both doctors reactions are priceless
2 and 3’s personalities clash in the funniest way! I love it!
Oh! I can see they've been doing UA-cam up a bit. I don't like it!
Katycat Perry Oh, you never do!
***** Yeah, you never do.
Miller Animations Oh, yeah, you never do!
Now that that's out of the way shall we head over to the Black Archive? I hear Zygons are trying to get their big red rubbery sucky hands on Jack's vortex manipulator.
And UA-cam regenerates yet again!
This is one of the best Doctor Who scenes of all time.
Second Doctor: "You don't mind do you?"
Third Doctor: "Yes."
Second Doctor: "I didn't think you would. "
0:09 you can see the join in the two videos because of how Jon’s shadow on the console is cut off. Lol.
I so miss both these actors. Particularly the mighty Trout.
Troughton and Pertwee just have a wonderful dynamic.
0:03 - Nice clean split screen work here, hiding Patrick Troughton who is actually on the set with them when this is filmed. I think you can make out Patrick's shadow cast on the TARDIS floor before the split if lifted.
0:33 And here we have the origin of the “I don’t like it” ongoing joke.
Love how the Doctor always argues with himself XD
Also, poor Jo. As Peri once said, the Doctor is a very confusing person to be around...
1:05 - technically speaking he was already here - just - ya know - further back lol
Love the 2nd Doctor, he cracks me up. Matt Smith really channels that child-like energy.
Troughton and Pertwee were the best, hands down.
Yes, my Dad was a huge Doctor Who fan and I was raised on the classic series. I've never seen the current ones YET. I love Pertwee so very much.
I despised that ranking list from....I want to say watchmojo or something? I think it had Pertwee near the bottom. Which makes it justifiable to completely ignore.
Companion: " We are all together. Goo Goo. Ga Choob. "
2nd Doctor: " Hm? What? "
Companion: " It's a song by The Beetles "
2nd Doctor: " Oh? How's it go? "
3rd Doctor: " OH PLEASE BE QUIET! "
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Look is he really you
Gosh, I know so LITTLE about 2nd Doctor but I alerady love him !
"Your effectiveness is now doubled!"
"Halved, more like."
😂🤣 It's a pity they couldn't have been in a series together.
"you dont mind do you?" **"YES"** "i didnt think you would!" cracks me up all the time
Troughton just knocks it out of the park in two minutes doesn't he? If only current Doctor Who could be as good as this.
+arniebunny
Heaven Sent
Raz Salt Very unpopular opinion there.
+Ionut Maris not really an unpopular opinion with the public.
Raz Salt
It is actually.
+Ionut Maris not at all mate, since tenant left (and I don't like him) the shows popularity has dwindled if you want evidence look at the viewing figures mate and then come back and tell me.
The Doctor meeting himself is always the best thing ever.
Troughton and Pertwee just had the best bickering.
I love how Patrick Troughton talked as his Doctor. So quintessentially British. The dialogue between the 2 Doctors here, is freakin' HILARIOUS!
The interplay between them....sheer poetry!
To this day, this is still the best multi-Doctor show. "The Five Doctors" and "The Two Doctors" were certainly fun, but this one sets the standard. "I may call you Jo, mayn't I?" is just one of my favorite line deliveries in the whole series. :-) Troughton's Doctor is just so flippin adorable, and Pertwee will forever be the real Doctor for me!
This was always my fav classic episode, the sass these two throw back and forth is amazing
0:37
Iconic line all through the whoniverse
The second doctor can see they've been doing the TARDIS up a bit, but can he see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
