“You may be a Doctor, but I am *THE* Doctor, the Original you might say.”
MattyMatthews _YT "You tryin to be funny?"
+Michael McGrath don't you mean Dalek android duplicate?
"Success, paramount success! It is impossible to distinguish from the original!"
Lol.
It’s Filtch pretending to be the 1st Doctor.
Pournaras I find this story "booooriiiing" and much prefer the original 1st Doctor era of the show great and on occasion, hilarious, especially some of the fluffed lines. The original 1960s 1st Doctor era really didn't need saving, especially not by this story, which had "jokes" which fell flat and were the worst part of the episode according to most people I've seen online. David Bradley is a good actor, he can play the 1st Doctor, it's just a shame he didn't have a good script in this instance.
If I'm not mistaken, Peter's first doctor was Hartnell. He was there since the beginning, so having his Doctor play opposite the 1st as his send-off must be a real treat for him.
Wdym hartnell was his first?
@@ashtoneslit5929 I mean when Peter Capaldi was young, his first Doctor was William Hartnell. Aka the First Doctor.
@@StormSage13 makes sense
I thought that the other day lol
He's also the 1st doctor in his new cycle so technically there both 1st doctors
From clueless old man to righteous protector of the universe... old man.
He's come a long way.
To quirky, sparkly and quickwitted woman.
@arnold jayeola I'd like to see you make a sonic screwdriver out of spoons.
The original was far from clueless.
He was a young gallifreyan man near the end of his regeneration.
He was never clueless. He played the part of an old man to get his way or to manipulate events.
I adore how Capaldi brought the energy of a young man into the appearance of an old man with the guts of a man and the weird humor of a teenager (we all remember the electric guitar with a tank.)
he bought that tank for his fish
Twelfth has a major growth......Not just the hair but in behaviour. Imagine 8th series 12 in this situation lol
But that's the beauty of Peter's Doctor. He grew in character like no other Doctor.
I thought you were going to say it's behind his ear. Or the side of his neck, that's where I tend to notice most major growths.
This is why Capaldi is my favorite Doctor.
@jooie444 Nah, He regressed like no other. He was fantastic in his debut, but then in the series 9 opener he literally showed up in a tank, with an electric guitar and shades continuously shouting dude! I'm sorry but that's not character development, that's blatantly rewriting a character just to make him more appealing for younger audiences after a public backlash towards the dark themes of series 8.
Steve Davidson
Don't be stupid, he was always meant to develop. If it wasn't in a way that you liked, though.
Capaldi’s inner childhood doctor who fanboyism came out when he said, “you still call it a ship!”
2:22 _"But if you, if you die here, if your future never happens, if you don't do the things that you are supposed to do, the consequences could be..."_ love that line, you can really see the fear in his eyes, and the musiccccc is everything!
I love the 12th doctor
And then everything... just... STOPS. Awesome. :D
I'm pretty sure I heard carol of the bells !
Peter has some less than stellar stories and his strength as an actor made those stories a pleasure to watch.
I love that realisation that he has to save himself by convincing his old self to regenerate
"I have the courage, and the right, to die as myself" is a super underappreciated line
The 12th Doctor fanboying over himself. 💙🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ooooh yeah! True.
It would be like if you met yourself as a little kid and just found the shit they did at that age adorable. “Oh you still call it a dynasaw. Eeeh!”
I remember that 10th Doctor meets the 5th Doctor short.
Seeing Tennant fanboy over Davison was fun.
I love how he mentioned that the 1st Doctor still called it the "Ship." It was called the T.A.R.D.I.S. back then too, technically, but he always called it the Ship instead.
He's basically a 50 year old seeing himself when he was 10.
"I don't suppose either of you happen to be a doctor?"
Peter:" You trying to be funny?"
XD ROFL best line EVER
It’s such a Scottish thing to say anol lol
Gracie Conroy-Hargreaves reminds me of that scene where Peri says to Six “Perhaps you should see a Doctor” and he responds “Are you trying to be funny?”
Moffat: Well yes..
@@calumgallagher4518 it was also a Lethbridge-Stewart.
So was that man the Brigadier?
The first doctor has met his future selves multiple times before this, so he must have been super in denial to try not to regenerate.
Some of them if I remember correctly. He flew with all of them to save Gallifrey. However he only met the others up to the 5th doctor. Looks like I'm going to be watching the classics soon.
Yeah I think all multi incarnation encounters end up being forgotten by the younger incarnations to avoid paradox.
João Vítor Freitas da Silva usually yes, but in the Five Doctors #2 refers to Omega from the three Doctors
Wiche episode is it
From my understanding only the latest incarnation of the Doctor remembers meeting his past selves. Which makes sense because otherwise EVERY version of the Doctor would be walking around with knowledge of their own personal future (that cannot be okay).
This episode still brings me a smile when David starts talking. You may be a doctor. But I am the doctor. Such a legendary line
I wish they'd taken the opportunity to quote the 4th. "You may be a doctor but I am The Doctor, the definite article you might say."

This moment right here feels the most like Classic Who since the series restarted in 2005. The way Capaldi speaks, the writing, the presentation of the First Doctor, the music - everything. Just hearing First say “How extraordinary.” and speak so proper is not something we have much of nowadays. Capaldi plays off of it all so well too.
It's so interesting seeing the 1st Doctor mention things like Regeneration and Time Lords. Remember things like that weren't really touched upon until the 2nd Doctor's era, so seeing 1 talk about Gallifreyan topics like that is really a nice treat. Shows us what could have been if they decided to go into the Doctor's backstory earlier.
I don't care about Chibnall's writing. William Hartnell is first incarnation of the Doctor (and all the other actors who played the First Doctor).
I agree
@Nathan-DTS Yeah that's the problem for me that Doctor is basicly space jesus now. I prefer the consept that he is just one person of his people who decided to run away and see the universe. Main character doesn't need special origin story to be special person. Average person who travels around who wants to do right thing is much better for me at least than Jesus running around saving everyone.
But if you like Chibnails way more, good for you. I'm not gonna stop you for liking that.
Yeah, I hope they retcon the timeless child out, it kinda ruins the character.
John McAuliffe agreed, the reason that doctor who is so amazing is that we know very little about who the doctor is. I liked the bits of history before timeless child, but timeless child a) makes hardly any sense and b) ruins the mystery of Who.
@@Jonewii long before chibnall they were going to turn him into space jesus. Had the show not been cancelled in the 80s, then the plan for the writers for season 26 of the 7th Doctors era (the utterly brilliant Sylvester Mccoy) was for a new origin story for the doctor that was intended to restore some of the mystique around the character - the plan was to make him essentially the jesus of the time lords. So it's not just chibnall, it's an idea that's been around for 30 odd years
David Bradley does a great job filling in for the late William Hartnell as the First Doctor. Here are two veteran actors, knowing what they're doing. We all would like to stick around longer, but this episode is about knowing when the time has come and how to leave with dignity, and both Bradley and Capaldi play it well. From the battlefield scene on, it's damn good acting, with the rest of the cast chipping in. Jenna Coleman was shot separately and she was CGI'd into her scene.
How? He sounds nothing like Hartnell, behaves nothing like Hartnell, didn't pick up any of Hartnell's tics and gestures, doesn't have Hartnell's attitude, doesn't carry himself like Hartnell...it's an old man in a wig. Are they going to just stick a tall guy with curly hair in a scarf next, and call it the Fourth Doctor? Because apparently if you get a vaguely similar-looking actor and stick him in an approximation of the Doctor's costume, then all the classics can appear! Ugh, I hate this reboot.
@@TakeNoteOfThat It's called acting, not mimicry.
@@rjmcallister1888 ...when you're recreating a character, it would be lovely to behave like the character.
@@TakeNoteOfThat after 2 years, I hope you've grown a brain
@@TakeNoteOfThat So, you probably didn't like Richard Hurndall as the The Doctor in the Five Doctors either? This was not exclusive to the reboot, friend.
David Bradley is an an amazing 1st doctor, He even plays the 1st doctor in some audio adventures by big finish they are amazing.
And the movie about the first doctor! He plays Hartnell so well!!!
This "First Doctor": sounds nothing like Hartnell vocally. Does not appear to have even attempted to approximate the tenor and pitch. Does not speak with Hartnell's cadence. Where are the stammers (not just when Hartnell couldn't remember his line, he threw in stuff like that constantly). Does not use even one of the dozens of little gestures and tics that Hartnell's Doctor had. No grabbing his lapels and thrusting his chin up to communicate authority. The written dialogue is nothing like the First Doctor.
He's an old white British man in an approximation of the First Doctor's costume. He doesn't behave, talk, or hold himself like the First Doctor. The BBC continues the nonsense policy it began in 1982 in "The Five Doctors": 'As long as we get the look right (Edwardian clothes, mid-sized scrawny old man, white wig), then we have recreated the First Doctor!'

@@DJMurdock The Whoverse sings another verse or much to his disdain there is a refrain.. The Book of The Physician prints another, expanded, edition.
I adore this special. It's a love letter to the series that feels like a proper finale to over half a century of Doctor Who, but in the spirit of its own message, the show goes on.
‘The very first time’
Chibnall: and I took that personally.
Too personally lol
I love the first and the twelft Doctor together!!!
Michael McGrath I known that already.
I like William Hartnel FIRST Doctor very much
Because it is not entirely inaccurate. This way the sexism of the early classic series (which started to stop with Zoe, one of the final companions of the Second Doctor) is acknowledged instead of swept under the rug.
CzB404 in the entirety of the first doctors era he is nowhere near as sexist as he is in this one episode
According to the feminist guru Anita Sarkeesian, EVERYTHING is sexist and she has to point it all out.
Hardly 'sexist' he treated all his compainions like children, women included, so that's why it might have come off to you as such.
It’s super appropriate that the first actual incarnation of the doctor would meet the first incarnation of their new regeration cycle.
2:45 there's something so strange and cool about a british accent saying "how extrordinary"
Considering how disillusioned Capaldi was by this point, he really did put in a fantastic performance at the end.
3:13
The best line ever 🤣🤣
The Captain "Hello ..... Sorry, so sorry. I don't suppose either of you is a Doctor."
Twelfth Doctor "You trying to be funny."
😂🤣 xxx
Fun fact: The Captain is Brigadiers Great Uncle
Me ........Mycroft
That line is uttered far more effectively and comically by the Sixth Doctor to Peri in 'The Two Doctors'.
When you think about it, this is the First Doctor speaking to the First Doctor, since Capaldi is the first of the second regeneration cycle. Two First Doctors, unwilling to change, wanting to stay the same out of sorrow, going on an adventure with each other and exploring together, resulting in them both deciding to regenerate, kicking off Second Doctor and Thirteenth Doctor. Fantastic.
"The Ship!!! You still call it a ship!"
XD I love how giddy the 12th Doctor is in this scene.
Even despite some fan negativity towards the episode (or maybe I'm just getting more sentimental as I get older) But I do still have a soft spot for Twice Upon a Time as an episode for being the swan song for more than a few things.
Steven Moffat's tenure (Series 10 made sure he ended on a high note for me personally)
Murray Gold's music.
Peter Capaldi (DX I didn't want him to go)
Bill and Nardole (Their time with 12 was far too short and I need my Big Finish reunion ASAP)
The tone and feel of Moffat's Who (For better or for worse in some cases but I will say that looking back on the Capaldi Era I've enjoyed Series 8 and 9 far more than I did when they were originally broadcast back in 2014/2015)
I just love how Twice Upon a Time closes out this era as it touches upon something old (The First Doctor's regeneration and by extension the Moffat era's nostalgic references) what's current (Giving closure to Twelve's suicidal tendencies character arc, as well as Clara, Bill and Nardole's goodbyes, demonstrated as every thing about the Twelfth Doctor's era disappears)
And of course something new as the 13th Doctor is ushered in, (Hopefully) remembers the optimistic words the Twelfth Doctor had ended his life on and brings new life as it cleanses what came before... Even if it ended up destroying my favorite TARDIS console room : (
Here's hoping Captain Chibbers does well for Series 11.
It wasn't just the 12th Doctor being giddy about how the 1st Doctor still called the TARDIS a ship, it was also Peter Capaldi being nostalgic about the 1st Doctor, because Peter Capaldi watched the 1st Doctor episodes when the series started. Also, if people saw The Three Doctors, they would realize that David Bradley's portrayal of the 1st Doctor matches William Hartnell's final time portraying the 1st Doctor. Watch both and you'll see what I mean.
What I see is a Whovian so delighted and excited getting to meet his childhood hero, his first Doctor, THE first Doctor. I mean look at the lights in Peter’s eyes! It’s pure happiness and nostalgia. You might as well say it was actually the Doctor himself feeling the same way after 2000 years.
@Fellinux Actually no. Moffat declined in quality I think from series 8 to series 10. And his portrayal of the First Doctor in this episode is such a major insult to the actual First Doctor, makes me wish Steven would've quit after series 9.
Too bad “Chibbers” just blew a massive hole in Dr Who...
I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry.
"you're face... it's all over the place!" behold the hand wave for hardcore fans about it not being hartnell
EDIT: Yes I KNOW! Hartnell is dead. has been for a long time. I am fully aware of that. That was the Joke! that this was the explanation for anyone offended that they had a different actor play the first Doctor. I'm not an idiot. I KNOW they couldn't use Hartnell.
Well... shhhyuu!
*your
wasn't Hartnell dead long before this episode? hell wasn't he dead before the 80s? lol
It COULDN'T have been Hartnell. Had Hartnell not died when he did, then the Doctor wouldn't have been able to regenerate, and the series would have ended prematurely.
nonspiderweb
Hartnell was kinda unavailable, deal with it.
I've always imagined it, since I watched Classic Who...that this is EXACTLY how William Hartnell felt as his illness was progressing...
Both as The Doctor, and himself. *le sob*
#LongLiveClassicWho
You should watch “An Adventure In Time And Space” if you haven’t! David Bradley (the actor portraying the 1st doctor here) plays William Hartnell in that and his performance as the actor behind that doctor and his struggles during the filming is absolutely breathtaking!!

I think we all are.
Well, until Big Finish manage to get him for audios, or he returns for the 60th. But, that's a while off.
Just sitting here impatiently waiting for some Big Finish stories with him.
Stranger Day Great doctor, but mediocre storyline
I like the new doctor, but the writing for the shows is horrible. Peter had a much better team working with him.
While I think the Doctor Falls is a better send off to Capldi and the Moffatt era, I can’t help but love Twice upon a Time as it was made so Moffatt could keep the Christmas special slot that RTD got years ago, it let Capldi go out on a more optimistic note, and best of all it gave the first Doctor a proper regeneration story and feels like a send off to his character that The Tenth Planet wasn’t.

No matter how much Chibs tries to retcon with his crappy storyline nothing will change the fact that Mr. Hartnell's Doctor IS and always WILL be the ORIGINAL.
The Timeless Child is the original though right?
@@SimonAckerman The Timeless Child is about as original as Chibbs is a good showrunner, ie nothing at all.
It also implies that Chibs has a poor understanding of the Doctor’s character and what make him unique among his fellow Timelords. While I don’t know chibs personaly and certainly have no clue on why he did it, I do know that making your character inherently special/born special as a god Is terrible writing, more often so then not and in the case of the Doctor himself, most certainly so it is.

Peter Capaldi is an amazing Doctor. I hope we'll see him again as The Doctor.
Peter Capaldi's episodes get a lot of slack for being bad but he has the two best Christmas specials.
Each Doctor that dreads regeneration has a good reason for it. And those who are jubilant, too
* 1: Scared as he's never experienced it before, capable of going once he knows it will be all right
* War: Doesn't want to live with genocide, leaves smiling knowing he found a peaceful resolution
* 9: Prevents himself from committing a genocide and sees the Daleks gone forever, at least as far as he knows
* 10: Lasted under a decade, leaves believing he committed genocide a second time
* 11: Knows the Time Lords are alive. Bitterly accepts he is at the end of his life, joyous that the Time Lords repaid him for his acts with a new lease on life
* 12: Has died billions of times over, doesn't want to be replaced. Seeing his oldest self come to terms, he accepts it and lets himself regenerate
I see you have missed 2-8.

Couple of observations:
1) In true 60s Who style, the cliffhanger is refilmed rather than copies and pasted in.

A real treat. Both Doctors are the first generations. I am stating the fact the 12th is the first after the reset from "The Time of the Doctor"
David Bradley went from playing William Hartnell in an adventuring space and time then to playing the first doctor in Doctor Who.
Fantastic.

This feels more like the 60th anniversary then what we have now
The man who was afraid to change, and the man who was tired of changing
Amazing conclusion and now we get timeless child.
Should've ended with capaldi
Timeless child doesn't exist
I'm thinking timeless child might actually be the master. He's well gone past all his regenerations and yet, still keeps regenerating and the doctor don't seem to have questioned this!
I like the slight parallels of this story being how the first doctor is refusing to regenerate as well as 12 (who is technically the first doctor in the new regeneration cycle provided by the time lords ) is also refusing

David Bradley is the best choice for this situation. Fresh off one of the most reviled characters on television (Walder Frey) and now one of the most beloved (the First Doctor).
Capaldi speaking to him abou the time he was cut off from sounds like him just fanboying naturally, like revisiting a fond old memory, both in character AND out.
This was a special special moment and one that I'm glad we all got to see.
Yes he is very good as the First Doctor.
It's amazing how much he looks and acts like hartnell

And in a show that allows you to do almost anything. But that was the best they could do.

I am 61. As with good literature, you always have more to discover and appreciate, re-reading, re-watching the growth of Capaldi's Doctor across three box sets. Also, if all future Doctors are given a maximum of only two series, then Chibnall and BBC are weeping angels making you look away, sending us all back to Past Doctors to rediscover a sense of hope so we can all regenerate rather than die with Chibnall. Too much?
this is a great episode

I actually would like to see all of what they recreated (as it's recreated, the 1st Doctor isn't a sexist). It could be cool as a bonus feature on a Tenth Planet Special Edition DVD.
yeah exactly
Or just watch the original.
If they’re going to recreate anything I’d say go for a completely missing story that hasn’t had animation done like the massacre or the crusade or even Marco Polo to try fill the gaps?
Anyone else watch The Doctor Falls ending so many times, that when we got to the opening of this episode, you could notice the lines had been reshot?
Some beautiful somber, graceful and epic music here!
I cried during this like every 5 minutes
"...The Original, you might say." DO YOU HEAR THAT, CHIBNALL!?
I wish we could get an extended cut of this special, given how much footage was left out of it.
For now, I recommend the audio book and kindle of Twice upon a Time, drawing on the TV script AND material left out plus interior monologues of the two doctors in their scenes apart from one another e.g. during the actual regeneration flambe, each alone with additional inner thoughts.
"Are you tryin to be funny?" Nearly wet myself laughing! 😂
This seems like such a hard regeneration episode to top, regardless of who is, or ends up, writing for Doctor Who. I mean the (then) current Doctor meeting, and being revealed to have shared their regeneration story, in a sense, with the First Doctor? Not sure how you top that, or even doing something remotely similar and make it work (you could crossover with another previous Doctor for a regeneration story, but it wouldn't be as big as doing so with the First Doctor, and it would just look like you're recycling this episode anyway.) Also, being able to tie in to the First Doctor's lifetime must have been a great way for both Peter and Steven (both fans of Doctor Who who got to act in and write for it respectively) to say goodbye to the show.
And yes, whatever has happened with The Timeless Child, and whatever people's opinions on it is, this is still "The First Doctor" as he was The First Doctor in the show, regardless of whether he's now confirmed to have had other forms before this - he's the Doctor the show started with, so this is still crossing over with the First Doctor.
“I don’t suppose either of you is a doctor?”
12th doctor: “... You trying to be funny?”
Me: xD, i am dead!
The perfect send off for both cycles
I just love that ending " You trying to be funny"
I'm still expecting capaldi to appear on the next anniversary
And now this moment means absolutely nothing thanks to Chibnall.
Yup, bloody vandal
Returning Russell T might restore order and reverse the polarity with a bit of luck.
God that a long time ago thing wasn’t helping the nerves on Christmas, the music nearly had me crying from the start, this episode meant a lot to me as although this era hadn’t been my favorite it was still the end of doctor who I had grown to love as I am still very very very nervous about the future of doctor who
Oh my this episode was amazing it almost hade me on my toes
This was brilliant thanks you peter and David
Michael McGrath how cause I have seen hartnell 1st docotor episodes and it takes a great actor to do what bill hartnell did
Cameron Jarvis I agree!.
If you actually watch the entire first Doctor's era and jump right to Twice Upon A Time once you get to the end of The Tenth Planet, it's not a character assassination, it really feels like you're seeing the episode from the perspective of the First Doctor and not Twelve, and a lot of the lines don't come across as sexist with the added context, especially the lines of the companion cleaning the TARDIS.
