I need to go dig up some old film of the earlier Rocky Long/Bronco Mendenhall defenses where they ran the 3-3-5 at New Mexico (and then BYU) in the late 90s early 2000s. Urlacher played small in that system then really bulked up once he got into the league.
Hey Coach! Just a couple of things. I've been running my version of the 33 STACK since 2007 learned from Air Force Academy and West Virginia University. Now to my point, Coach you where pretty fired up today and I say to the naysayers let them PLEASE, the less people in my area trying to run the 335 the better. When I was the only one running it it was great because teams didn't have a lot of answers for my "gimmick" defense. Then we had some good success and others started running it and they (the OC's) had to pay better attention. I don't want any more converts to the stack or the 3 high. All you end up with is a bunch of "messed" up (had to clean my langue there) versions that when you have to sell your ideas to a head coach he points to so and so school who "runs that gimmick defense" and it doesn't work. I've long ago given up trying to explain to anyone who would listen the virtues of the 335 and how in high school we got so many more kids that fit this set than others on a more consistent basis. So I just laugh and add another blitz to the package when the naysayers say..."Oh...we'll just run right at that defense." Have a blessed day coach.
@@nialap I started with Jeff Castel West Virginia (video), Airforce 335 (multiple videos), and Leo hand's coaching the 335(book). Study study study you are going to need an answer for all the people who don't understand your vision to every question that sound like....well what if the offense "just" does this...When I first started running it our main goal was to not allow a 100 yard rusher, then the spread offense came around and we had 52 sacks as a team and didn't care if the RB got 100 yards or not as long as we kept them kicking FG's instead of throwing (or running) for touchdowns.
Loved this defense as a player. I got to run this 3/3 years on varsity. I got to play both the strong and the weak side overhang in the stack, as well as the free. I've pretty much done/learned every assignment/job you could do from the DB spot. The 3-3-5 is fascinating to me with the different stunts you could pull from any position. What are some good references I should be looking at, primarily run defense/ different stunts and when/how they are effective? Great video Coach!!
You can change the front or shift to a different from from a 404 front which takes away the look of the stack but it’s still the stack principles (the marriage concept). This also allows you to play two high removing a safety from the box. In the end it’s all gonna go back to stack principles by run fit. At the high school level it’s best to keep the run fits the while changing the look to whatever rather if it’s a bear front over under overload the whole concept will be the same. So you can take away the title stack but it’s the stack.
Just my opinion but the backer fits are more 3-4 than they are stack fits. They also played some 3 High which makes it different from true stack. But i like your approach to simple.
@@CoachMac yeah In my opinion that’s not 3-3 that’s more 3-4. At the college level where they have more prep time, they can play more with fits blitzes etc. I just think when you do that you leave the 3-3 and it ends up being a 3-4 defense. Just being an odd front allows you the freedom to do that.
Tcu was a 3-3 principle team back in the day that lb to the weak side carried the same rules as a stack marriage lb. Their blitz calls were basically the same terminology used in mostly all 3-3 defenses
Love it, my defense has been based off a 3-3-5 that is never stacked for about 5 years. More 1 high than most that run it though we do a fair amount of split safety stuff
Coach I love the 3-3-5, stack or not the only thing I don’t understand is how you generate a pass rush without sending an extra guy. Is this an issue you also see and if so, what types of players are you looking for at the DL position?
Pass rush will never be as good sending 3 but in my opinion the ball is out really quick in HS so i would rather play coverage. Our DL are usually smaller athletic types
Good video. Would love to see you explain where most, traditional Edge rushers fit in with the 3-3-5. Do you typically see them play the role of Will or Sam or would they play DE next to the Nose? As an example, where would you play Micah Parsons, TJ Watt, and Von Miller in the 3-3-5?
If you are constantly bringing a 4th like a 3-4 team then they would be that backer, probably the will. For me they would be Ends because we don’t bring a 4th all the time. A really creative way to do it would be letting them be the Mike in the middle and adding them on to the rush from everywhere and treating it almost like a 4-2 box
Yes, what’s different about the 3-3 is you set the temple instead of the offense setting it. When you use different blitzes along with different fronts offenses have to make adjustments. When that motion player moves your free safety can be the adjustment which basically keeps you balanced for the counter boot reverse. You should always have one more number on either side of the center.

Rocky Long is awesome

Hopefully nobody buys into the 335 and you stay different!!!!
Im looking into the this defense do you have any advice?

I just search 3-3 stack on UA-cam
I’ll look up some 3-3 stack sites and try and share them

The only change to fits is if we gap exchange due to blocking scheme k.i.s.s.

GREAT VIDEO COACH, thanks
Thanks
coach mac i wish i knew the rules to this defense, rules of the middle safety
Very similar to a Mike LB
congrats on your 10 year anniversary
Thank You

Hi Coach Mac. Offensively, where are the weak points in the 335? How would you attack this defense? Thank you!!
Gap schemes
@CoachMac thank you sir!!
Got it. I'm a Dawg. How do you beat it?
Big personnel
Walk through the natty after that performance TCU had
Dude ball, the best roster won
Georgia smashed that defense, especially running to the perimeter. I figured TCU's defense would shine on the edge. That was a depressing title game.
Yea it got ugly
So is this from the same family as the Joe Lee Dunn and Rocky Long stuff? What might be some differences ?
Similar but less stack oriented, looks more like 3-4 stuff
I am not playing TCU. Cmon Man who gives a darn.
Vslid point, but you realize you can choose what you watch. Have a great day.
Do you think in the look you have on the board you are weak to the outside weak side?
Absolutely not
Do you think the 3-3-5 defense would be helpful in the high school world vs wing t?
It certainly can if those are your body types

too many syllables lets just play ball
Lol
who cares if it's stack or not?
I do not, but several people in the football world do
5 minutes in and you haven't explained anything useful
Thanks for watching
