    Speaker Bio
Atif R. Mian is the John H. He is also Co-Founder & Board Member, Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP). Professor Mian's work studies the connections between finance and the macroeconomy. His latest book, House of Debt, with Amir Sufi builds upon powerful new data to describe how debt precipitated the Great Recession. The book explains why debt continues to threaten the global economy, and what needs to be done to fix the financial system. House of Debt is critically acclaimed by The New York Times, Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and The Atlantic among others. Professor Mian's research has appeared in top academic journals, including the American Economic Review, Econometrica, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies and Journal of Financial Economics. He holds a bachelors degree in Mathematics with Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). More about Prof. Mian HERE.
    --------------
The Mahomedali Habib Distinguished Lecture on Pakistan is named in honor of one of the leading figures in the history of the Habib family. In addition to successfully guiding the Habib family’s transition from India to Pakistan following independence in 1947, Mahomedali Habib laid the foundations for the House of Habib, a group of powerful business and financial companies. The group has a long-standing history of philanthropy and social service and is currently leading the establishment of Habib University, a liberal arts and sciences university, in Pakistan which aims to bridge the gap between global academia and Pakistan. Toward honoring the legacy of Mahomedali Habib - who was distinguished by his love for Pakistan and his deep commitment to education and philanthropy - the Habib family has decided to endow an annual lecture series in his name. Through this lecture series the Habib family aims to improve and diversify conversations about Pakistan in the United States as well as create opportunities for US and Pakistan-based scholars to dialogue.
This event is presented under the aegis of the Berkeley Pakistan Initiative

Brilliant. Dismissing this man will go down as one of the biggest mistakes Khan's government made. Pakistan is worse off without this man at the helm of its economic policy.

Atif Mian is brilliant at simplifying a complex problem. I found Dr Munis Farooqi's first 14 minutes difficult to stay focussed on (sorry). Consider starting to listen from 14 minutes when Dr Mian comes on. The transcript is invaluable for this important talk. Thank you for posting it on UA-cam.

This was wonderful. Thanks Prof. Atif Mian. Now I understand the background of why Pakistan has to frequently go to IMF for a bailout. I wish Pakistan will heed his advice and head to a prosperous future.

Thank you Prof. Atif Mian. Pakistan had an opportunity of having you to set it's economic right during beginning of Imran Khan's regime but Pakistan lost you just because the coward Imran khan could stand against the insane pressure from some non entities . He not only lacked all the 5 Cs of good economic governance identities by you in this brilliant lecture but also any plan or even a will to fix the economy. For a first Pakistan was really on the brink of bankruptcy had he continued in office even for a month more beyond May 22. You just gave the exactly right economic course ,the tax on land being the key. On the contrary Imran khan not only gave amnesty to the investment in real estate sector from any question being asked about the source of investment but also gave this most unproductive sector tax immunity. As a result the real estate sector became the safest haven for black money and rent seeking. His regime was unparalleled in external borrowing and misgovernance of every sector of economy and rule of law. Please sometimes let Pakistan benefit from your critique of the economic management by the current federal govt in pakistan.

Their only interest is to increase their domestic capacity of jihad and build more capacity madrasas. The whole idea of Pk was built on this paradise. He himself was kicked out of govt. and still in a dream land.
