Small request - when donating to charity please can people store summer stuff to donate near the start of the season as many shops don't have much storage space for out of season stuff. Thank you
It’s best to ask your shop. I assumed that too but when I asked my preferred charity shop when I could bring in fall clothes and they said anytime, they put out all seasons year-round.
I’ll be purging my closet in a few weeks to store spring/ summer clothes and get out the fall/ winter. I always have a bag or two to donate to charity. I love your videos. You give usable, reasonable advice with humor. Thank you!
Agree Margaret, I used to just see something & impulse buy. Now I try to think more about the fit & fabric & what else will it go with. We live and learn!!
When I learned to sew, one thing that was stressed was to match the design at the seam. “You can tell the garment is cheap if it has mismatched seams,” the instructor said. It takes more material to match seams. I never forgot this, and am one who notices this on other people. The worst are mismatched Celtic plaids. The Celts would never do this. Some expensive garments have mismatched seam nowadays, and I think people just don’t know. So I’m glad you mentioned this in your podcast.
Seam misalignment drives me nuts!!! Bravo for pointing that out. I continue to be amazed how many young women go for plaid shirts that are misaligned. My grandma who taught me how to make a plaid skirt would be appalled.
When my mother taught me how to sew, she pointed out the importance of making sure that the fabric matched at the seams and that the zipper was sewn in neatly. Like you, I notice that plaid flannel shirts, in particular, often have mismatched side seams. This video is an excellent one, so kudos to My Over 50 Fashion Life! It will serve as a helpful guide in sorting out items in my closet.
😂😂😂😂 LMAO....you're hysterical! You've learned a lot and if the right women are watching you've taught a lot too! Anytime my husband is with me when shopping and I come out of the fitting room in a flowered print he says "old!" and I put it back. Totally agree about large armholes, with thin arms it's hard as hell to find a sleeveless top that fits so I don't bother anymore. The reason items are made with unmatched seams is because there is fabric waste if its matched which costs money. Used to be only cheap clothes were made that way but I see expensive brands doing it now a days so beware! Loved the video! Thanks
Spring/Summer.....capri pants in white and navy, stonewash jeans, white jeans, tshirts in white, pink and navy. Metallic tshirts in navy and silver for evening. Midi dresses, plain and patterned, sandals and plain trainers, chunky and plimsol. Blazers in navy and cream. Autumn/Winter.....Boot cut trousers, dark jeans, cashmere sweaters, new wool coat, parka. Boots long and short. Cord below knee skirt, satin shirts in silver, navy, red. That's my entire wardrobe at 56 years old. Always without exception worn with quality underwear. If your undies don't fit properly your clothes won't look their best. It has taken me many years to find my look and I only buy a few pieces each year. If you buy quality items and look after them they last. Most importantly, wear what you like with a smile and confidence!!!! That's my tuppence worth.
Yes! Those overlarge armholes are a big no. I have also recently added costume jewelry I no longer wear each time I fill up a bag of clothes for charity. Our taste changes with time so I don't bother to wonder what I was thinking when I bought that weird print 10 years ago. 😅
Totally agree with you on several things here. The pilling thing is one of my pet hates too. Another pet hate is dirty sneakers. On men and women! (Use dirty sneakers to garden)!
What a timely video. I just went through my closet and dresser today. I have 4 piles of clothing on my dining room table (thrift store, neighbors, and 2 for friends). It feels good to get rid of clothing that no longer fits or isn't really your style anymore.
As for pilling, I use a cashmere comb which also works well on most knits, including tees. It safely removes the pills and allows for many more years of use without looking worn and tacky.
Its a hard balance! Each age has its own look and it’s important to be mindful of that before totally getting rid. I have a fear of joining the mid blue and beige briggade 😊
Everything you mentioned is so on point. Since I became a thrifter I have become a fabric snob. After losing 25 lbs, I donated my whole wardrobe when I hit my goal, I had to begin all over again with buying my clothing wardrobe..I stopped buying fast fashion, and what a difference it has made as far as pilling, misaligned print on tops, and just all around quality of the clothes I now buy. It has been eye opening what good quality clothing feels like, washes like and fits. It amazes me I spend just $4.79 cents for a Ralph Lauren, or Banana Republic, J Crew, most of my thrifted purchases are 100% cotton, or a good quality knit. If something is Jersey or polyester I will not buy it any longer I am ironing a little more, but I am loving my new wardrobe. I donated all my costume jewelry , and only wear my 14 k, it feels good to elevate your wardrobe I have thrifted purses that are made in Italy all of them are genuine leather, I pay $5 instead of buying junk purses , it takes little money to buy wood quality once you find a good thrift store. So many of my purchases are brand new with tags
Loved this and agreed with everything - I had a cheap grey snake print shirt for ages and everytime I wore it I felt awful so last week threw it in the bin 🙌🏻
I am 5 foot two and I weigh 130 pounds, I never wear prints especially big bold prints. I only wear Britain stripes, and animal print in accessories. Great video!
For big armholes or loose necks, I always wear a cami tank under my shirt and dresses. It helps things to lay better and absorbs sweat so my shirt doesn’t get sweaty. Also prevents bra from showing through on thing fabric. I just gave away a pair of animal print (leopard like maybe) combat boots. They looked fun and fun but too young. The problem is I have size 11 feet so the proportion is just too much for some things in larger footwear.
I agree about snakeskin - I bought some awful boots, and I don’t even like animal print! I’ve learned my lesson with fake bags too. But your best point is seam alignment. Even some quite expensive clothes are misaligned at the seams, and it looks awful.
Thank you, it was very entertaining. My wardrobe is always drastically cut down because I constantly do it but you gave me the idea of looking through my jewelry box so that should be fun.
You've got me cracking up lol. I think when pattern's don't line up that's a sign of a lesser quality garment. I always look for this especially when I buy striped garments.
I so needed to watch this! I thought I'd had quite a purge but am still guilty of holding on to things that no longer suit me. I also struggle with guilt of getting rid of pieces with sentimental attachment (even though they no longer work for/flatter me), guess it's all part of a process....x
The letting go of things takes time. It doesn’t have to all go “at once”. Unless you’re having a major life change like moving noise and downsizing or are a hoarder. The emotional attachment things can be paired down by using the rules of “having value, quality, when did you use it last, and do you have the space to keep it”. So eg, a locket with an emotional connection takes up very little space and can be handed down eventually but can sit in a drawer and not make clutter. But those expensive boots that just don’t go with your style anymore and are taking up lots of closet space can be donated, etc. it’s a process Don’t doubt yourself and let go when you’re ready.
I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said and showed BUT I nearly pee’d my pants a few times! Omgosh, the way you say things is hysterical.. absolutely loved this video! I’m hooked.. going to binge watch now lol. Thanks for the tips and laughs.
Great video! With age hopefully comes wisdom! I have had my share of huge fashion blunders and buys for sure! Eg A dress in a bold pattern with a ridiculous uneven hemline. What was I thinking! These days I rather opt for simpler lines and a more classic look and it works!
I adore my snake print shoes (they are much darker than yours, though)🤣 I hate florals, never wear them. Buttons as decoration (gold or plastic) look cheap to me, too.
There are many good points in the video e.g. you may not want to buy your clothes from QVC 😁. But you don't want to be boring, no matter what your age. I liked the Steve Madden shoes and, for me, if they are comfortable, they're keepers.
Classic / preppy LOOK is always in style, simple and elegant LOOK is always the look that has the spotlight on you as the most intelligent and most important person no matter where you are going .
I love costume jewelry because, if a piece breaks or an earring is lost, I’m not out much money. I now live in a small rural area, so my expensive jewelry doesn’t really fit. I save the bits and pieces, and fasten them to zipper pulls or sew them onto purses that I sew. The teardrop earrings are the best.
You’ve inspired me to declutter my closet today! I’m to the point where even my “at home” clothes have to look cute. This video reminds me of my ex husbands stretched out awful clothes…hence he is an ex. I love your video I’m cracking up! 🤣
Thank you! I don't mind cheaper to mid range clothes (not a millionaire any way.. lol) but always find the fabric does not drape, hang or wash well. Its false economy. Love the red handbag!! 0
😊Just think of the huge amount of wasted fabric in creating garments with only matching seams. I think it’s not needed in most prints anymore. Plaids and horizontal stripes - yes.
I do like the animal print shoes even if a little unsubtle. I would wear them to lift a very plain outfit. I know what you mean about bold prints. As an artist I am drawn to very bright colour and florals but realise now that in practice I feel more comfortable in plainer (polka dots I do love) with some accessories for interest (like those shoes 😂).
I have to agree with you! Shoes, scarves, jewelry & even handbags with prints add visual interest, and up a classic, streamlined outfit to the next level in style. Great ways to add some trendy looks too. I just bought some leopard print booties I wear with classic style ensembles, and get so many compliments. Just make sure it’s good quality.
Absolutely.. I think at a certain age we know what suits and what doesn’t I may be 60 but I’m still young in my head and just adapt the trends to suit my wardrobe with reason.
Oh, bugger. Vivienne Westwood dressed like a certifiable nutjob. Why would you take advice from a woman who dressed like she was ready for the funny farm? No, thanks!
Thanks for all your very good examples and I had a really good laugh! I do have a few of those dresses that I have saved for our Caribbean type of vacations but did indeed just fill a bag with most of them now for a giveaway. Funny that you showed that navy/white dress as I kept one similar to this also - it is a maxi dress. I have not decided if I should shorten it or leave it long. Just curious if you group paisley prints with the large flower patterns? Would love your thoughts on the Lily Pullitzer type of prints? Will need to check some of your other videos. Gee my closet is getting smaller 😂
Very brave of you to show past fashion choices. I think we end up buying things like the snake skin shoes with metallic and tassels because it was on sale.
Good morning ! OMG, I must do this in January! Yesterday, I thought I would wear this shiny" silver top (still had tags on it) to a Holiday Party and oooooh nooooo, I looked so so matronly, yup, going to charity and the stretchy necklace my goodness I have 3 of them, different sizes and colors. Oh well, we girls bought them 15 years ago and why do I still have them in my jewelry drawer. Anyway, thank you so much for the encouragement! Cheers and Happy Holidays
I can’t imagine anyone would think you were “up yourself”, you come across as lovely. The vest and sweat thing 🤮. I hate other people’s sweat, don’t even like my own! 😂
I have a pet peeve over pilling. They were so pretty and are so tacky with pilling. And I think I have that same blush stretchy top. I do know what you mean by it being too stretchy. Thank you! Did you say your name? You are adorable. I agree with every item you tossed. On my own I still have doubts, so it was nice to have your opinion.
I love heavy jersey. I ordered a blue dress that was described as jersey, but the material was so thin you could see right through it. I can't bring myself to wear it.
I’m guilty of that too. I’m getting better about it since I realized that one of my girls is really using my gently worn items. She’s in graduate school and volunteers to write up my charity boxes - she was embarrassed to ask at first… I told her there’s no shame in recycling things
lol. I laughed at the wide leg. I love them and have tried them so many times. And donated them so many times. They look terrible in me!!!! Too short. I think I have finally got it through my thick skull that I’m not 5’8”. 😂🤣😂

I agree it's the first thing I notice on plaids!
I notice that sleeves are not cut out on the bias and bind your upper arm.
Can’t bear misaligned seams, need to be matched or I don’t buy no matter what the cost

Even expensive clothes don't have seam alignment these days. Fabric is often cut in layers now so seams are less likely to align.

Sparkly plastic jewellery design it for the Xmas tree
I love both pair of the snakeskin shoes. With a solid black dress or solid black outfit yes... I will let the shoes do the talking...
You can use a shaver to deal with pilling. It usually works amazingly well.
I use some tops as pj's.
I don't know about those Steve Madden snake print sandals. I think you could have made them work. With an all black outfit, or a black/white outfit.
I agree with everything except the shoes, and I'm not a big fan of animal print but I liked those. You'd need a plain color outfit to pull it off.
I always get a good chuckle when you describe some of the items. I love your perspective.
Glad you like them! Thank you 😊
Good points, but that gold color of your shirt is not good for gray hair. It's for redheads.
You are right that it's not in my pallet, if my pallet is correct. I'm not sure if you watched my colour analysis 🤔.
Great video people need to go through their wardrobe and it be very very picky about what they keep!
I actually like bold patterns, with plain jeans they look nice.
Love this! Especially your humour - can relate!
I am 5 foot two and I weigh 130 pounds, I never wear prints especially big bold prints. I only wear Britain stripes, and animal print in accessories. Great video!

I am 60 now too, thank you for the sensible advice , and the giggles . I could do without the shame Im feeling 😄.
Hello from Texas, I agree with your assessment of the big prints. This is my second of your videos today, You are very entertaining and spot on.
The shoes are great! With a plain dress they’d be perfect!
Same here love the shoes, & with a plain outfit they can look classic.
You were cracking me up! Thanks for sharing! :D

Hi there 😀. I have more to do in January too.
Thank you....I'm taking notes!
Well done. Entertaining and true all at the same time.
I like the tassel snake skin loafers. I'm 63, I don't even wear loafers.☺☺☺
I have a pair myself, but without the tassels.
Get a depiller …. They work great and revive favorites
Yes i found a rechargeable one today.
Ha ha 😅 totally agree large armholes on hairy men (or women !) is a definite no ! 😀
Thank you! I don't mind cheaper to mid range clothes (not a millionaire any way.. lol) but always find the fabric does not drape, hang or wash well. Its false economy. Love the red handbag!! 0
I went through my wardrobe these past couple of days and I discarded about 75%. I can still throw out some of what is left! Very liberating!
I'm a fan
I agree with a lot of what you showed. I loathe handbags with logos (or anything with a logo). Why am I paying to advertise their brand? 🧐 😆
Great suggestions! Here's another one, this video should have timestamps✌️
There flowers looked like sheep from distance and love ittttt
😊Just think of the huge amount of wasted fabric in creating garments with only matching seams. I think it’s not needed in most prints anymore. Plaids and horizontal stripes - yes.
Large prints, plaids, checks should match. Small patterns not so much. Quality items use more fabric and you can usually wear a smaller size.
A number of people said that about the shoes so I'm going to put them on vinted.
Vivienne Westwood said wear whatever you like whatever your age, be creative throw nothing out just reinvent it ..
