Man I have been trying for 2 hours to find a way to stop the crank shaft from turning on my zero turn to remove the pto clutch and couldn't figure it out. I am heading out to try this rope trick. If it works You have no idea how much you have helped. THANK YOU!!! UPDATE: It works like a charm... What a Help this video is for people like me without an impact wrench.... I did exactly as he said in the video and changed it out in less than 30 minutes... after 2 hours of messing with the crankshaft. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m trying to make an off-roading mower and I’m wondering if my mower can run without the pto, to see if it’s even worth taking off. Thank you for taking the time to answer if you do.
Well it would but your issue is the PTO also keeps the drive belt pulley bolted up. I would just take the belt off, that PTO won’t be sucking any horsepower without the deck belt. An off-road mower lol I don’t know what that is but I like it !
Like magic. Thx to you and Jessie J. In looking for a video to watch on this because my LT1045’s PTO stopped working and it wasn’t the switch. The first one I starting watching was a video with text over images of flowers. The stupidest way to mistreat your audience is to totally ignore the visual part of your video by excluding the extremely relevant visuals of things like the tools actually being placed on the bolt and things like that. Your video was dead on. Clear audio even though a tad echoey, you were still close enough to the mic that you were easily understood. Thank you for a video well done.
My PTO clutch was totally burned out on my XT1. I didn't have an impact so I ordered one and still couldn't remove the bolt. It's only a 1/4 inch drive so that was a "live and learn" moment for me. But the rope trick worked! That saved me a ton of time and probably money too. Mower Mike, thank you for this video!
The string trick absolutely worked, thanks Jesse!! We had to feed it in while turning the bolt on mine until it got wedged in the crankshaft. Once the rope got in there good, the bolt popped like a charm. I used Paracord type rope.
You are a hero. I would never have thought of this trick. I have an impact, but it didnt have enough oomph to kick the bolt off. You have saved me. I spent an hour looking at every other video on these darn mowers, half of them dont have the clutch and the rest use impacts. I'm just a guy trying to save a couple hundred bucks on a repair bill, and youve saved it for me. What's the best way to send you a few of the bucks I saved? It's worth it to me to pay you back. Amazon links? Patreon? Ko-fi? Let me know, I'll do it!
Haha nothing needed just glad to help. I started doing this videos because they are what I would want to watch. The rope idea actually came from a viewers comment so can’t take all the credit.
Thanks for the videos made my drive belt replacement snap. Regarding the rope trick I was able to use a smaller rope ( 3/16 all I had here ) by using a sturdy drinking straw to guide it into the cylinder making it possible to push rope...lol
Man sorry to hear that. Somehow I feel like this is my fault. I would get as much of it out as you can and then just run it. The engine should eat whatever is left of that rope. Full throttle it will make some funny noises for a bit then smooth out. (Remember I am a guy on UA-cam giving you free “advice”)
Hey mower Mike, we’ve got a old 1330 cub cadet and 2 out of the 4 engine mounting threads are stripped, have you ever seen someone have success pulling the engine and tapping the holes to make new threads?
That shouldn’t be too hard especially since it is just aluminum. I would drill it out and tap new threads for a slightly larger bolt in there. Or you could just drill it out and put a bolt with a nut on the end of it will fit and not tap anything. You got this check out this video. ua-cam.com/video/oecrhBGueOQ/v-deo.html
@@MowerMike already tried that… with plenty of Blaster penetrating oil on it. Plus, I am afraid to pry against the casing of the engine. This thing is really stuck. I read about somebody welding a large nut to the end of the PTO and using it to pull away from the shaft, but I don’t have a welder!
@@MowerMike thanks for caring! It’s a PTO honor cub, cadet mower, and the sprocket is Tucktaway up in there and I can’t get to it to put a polar on it. The only thing that is exposed is the housing for the clutch and that’s pretty thin material. I guess I’m going to try to rent an air hammer with a blunt end then attack it with that…
@@MowerMike Thanks so much. I'm always terrified of making a problem worse by snapping a connector. Would you happen to know where the black/yellow wire connects near hydrostatic fan? I replaced the drive belt and noticed that the fan was damaged...on...but barely.....wanted to move the tractor just far enough to test....moved about 10 feet and tractor suddenly (instantly) went dead. No electric whatsoever. I just noticed that the broken fan must have cut that wire. Green in still screwed in location...but can't tell where to reconnect the yellow/black....?
The rope trick worked great for me. Was replacing the drive belt and this worked to loosen the bolt to get the PTO off. To tighten the bolt, I had to adjust the rope in the cylinder, perhaps because the engine was turning in the opposite direction?
One question,If a piece of rope should happen to come off and stay in the motor yoy start it would it hurt the motor, could it scare the piston walls or the rings? Test that😊put a small piece in thwn run it for an hour take apart and see! I would live to know if tt jyst burn up and do nothing😁😎
Good morning Mower Mike, taking your advise and I found a cub sitting in the weeds. The guys said it runs but the mow board is bad. I'll have to search your videos for mow board videos and of course ask you for guidance. We'll see how it goes. Its a Super LT 1554 and wants 100 bucks. It looks worth it.
d@@MowerMike I guess it's called the deck. For me its the thing that turns and holds the blades. As well as any bigger truck that was brought in to the shop. But I digress......
@@brucegillette5713 Detroit’s are built like tanks I hear! As far as your deck, if the things turning the blades are bad those are the spindles. Super easy to replace. So for the life of me I cannot get this to work on our LT1050. What am I doing wrong? I swear we did it all exactly the same but it just is not working. Keeping in mind I don’t think this bolt has ever been taken off before.
Replace both pulleys, unlike the deck pulleys which are metal, the transmission pulleys are plastic. My flat pulley melted in half. Not sure how to post a picture but that caused my belt failure.
(Xt1 that is) Older models used metal pulleys. Cut corners in the wrong place. Plastic pulleys that are under that much stress are bound to fail. My flat side pulley literally melted.
Great Video!! I am wondering if you could possibly do a video on how to remove a Hustler 54” zero turn deck and clean it up underneath and check the belts? Thanks 🙏🏻 Have a blessed day!! Amen 🙏🏻
Thanks Scott. Phew finally a positive comment so many angry guys on UA-cam lol. I don’t have a hustler at this time. It shouldn’t be hard though just find how to loosen the deck belt, on that one there is probably a lever you pull. And the pull the pins on the deck mounts, should be three and pull her out. Good luck
Not at all. Don’t have it running. The black bracket you most takeoff to remove the pto goes into a slot on the pto to hold it still while it’s running. Put that bracket back on and use a regular ratchet. This is a lot of unnecessary time and steps lol
This little trick just saved me from running my head thru a wall. Thanks for this video and S/O to Jessie for being a wizard.

Great trick! I’ve been using that method to remove chainsaw clutches for over 40 years.
Yep, is so much easier this way. Better than an impact
On 2 cycle engines there,s no valves to bend.

That sucks. Try a big flat head screw driver and try to pry it down or wack it softly with a hammer to loosen up the rust.

Does the electrical connector just pull apart? I’m afraid of breaking the wires…
Yes it does. They get sticky, may need a flathead screwdriver to help persuade it off.

No idea get a manual for it.
What if you are 180° off compression stroke, at exhaust stroke, could you Bend the exhaust valve from the piston pushing the rope into the valve?
