James May has crashed his Tesla! | Everything wrong with his Model S

- Опубліковано 18 лип 2023
- James May revealed his Tesla Model S years ago on the DriveTribe channel, and he has been using it as a daily ever since. It has taken a bit of a hammering since then, and he admits to having crashed it on more than one occasion. He decided to take Mike Fernie for a tour of the bumps and scrapes, before sending him off to fix them.

Came for a car video, stayed for May’s iconic shirt.
i want to know what it is made of, because it's been around a LONG time
@@ghomerhust I think that, for posterity, someone ought to go back into the TG archives and find every bit of him wearing that shirt, and then make a compilation showing the color fading over time. I suspect it will have faded entirely to white before he stops wearing it.
100%!
I watched one of May's travel shows last week and he was wearing that same shirt🤣😂
He wore this on the Patagonia special didn’t he? He was in the lotus 😂
I did not know James could drive fast enough to have a crash .
Unless its a sweet old Mitsubishi evo before they turned to garbage. Those also get him in trouble 😅
I didn't either until the Scandi flick special.😂
@@austinmoore5334 Nothing suprised me as much as that crash. And I am sure that wall also quiet suprised James aswell, maybe he had his reading glasses on then too?
My dad always said, driving slowly is the hard part. (he was a truck driver).
Only in tunnels
part of James' problem is that it is so wide. At 77 inches (195.58cm) it is nearly as wide as an F150 (79.9 inches). It was designed for the U.S. road system, not the UK.
Actually, that's about the width of any large luxury sedan. Audi A8, BMW 7 series, BMW 8 series, Merc S class, etc. They're all around 194-196 cm. Then you got all the different SUVs roaming the roads in the UK, which are just as wide.
@@khanikun but in an SUV you have an unconsciousness awareness about how big it is, the model S just looks like a pretty normal saloon car so maybe psychologically you dont think its as large as it actually is
We have cars and trucks in the UK as wide as in the USA. Our motorway lanes are the same width as highway lanes in the US etc... We have some old villages with narrow roads but you always see 7.5 ton trucks and long wheelbase sprinter vans everywhere all of which are bigger than a Tesla or an F150 for that matter.
London is literally the world capital of asfalt crawlers, just for info.
A Range Rover is 80.1" wide, designed in the UK.
Captain slow clearly not been driving slowly
Captain "doing 6 in the 5 zone" now 😁
Well, his nickname isn’t Captain Cautious…
Half his accidents seem to be on the driveway or putting the car away lol
I'm glad James appears in this episode, and I hope he comes back again, Drive Tribe has its own style, but he and also Jeremy, could be part of this sometimes, it's nostalgic😅
I only watch this channel for May and Hammond.
It was set up by all three, but Clarkson has sold his share I think. May is doing more of the cooking side of the Tribe websites, Hammond mainly does the DriveTribes as he can combine it with his workshop and get exposure for that as well. Unlikely for Clarkson to show up any time soon unfortunately.
First it's Hammond crashing everything now it's May. How times have changed.
James didn't want to be left behind, now Clarkson is crashing his farm machinery and Hammond is being Hammond.
He basically wrote off the evo
Wish this happened sooner since James normally goes really slow so he only scratches paint. Hammond totals cars and almost kills himself every time.
@@Elwaves2925 It's more the countryside crashing into the orangutan's massive tractor.
@@GloomGaiGar A perfect Clarkson excuse.
why is james taking richards place ? richard is the crash man 🤣
Richard crashes with much more enthusiasm.
@@michaelrice500 James starting to give competition to RH with the Scandi Crash
2:33 Sarah my other half helpfully put rocks on the driveway of our house so I can drive into them.. "helpfully" LOL love James' sense of humor 😄
Possibly in retaliation for taking her to a plywood exhibition
I'd have never imagined one of James' car to be in such a condition. Hammond's,... I'd be surprised if it's still in one piece.
I am so, so happy to see James on Drivetribe. I hope Lucy continues to make cameos as well. This is gonna be fun!
As a new driver (I'm 17), it's nice to know that even a long time car journalist has the occasional bump and scrape even on a modern car with a multitude of sensors and technologies. Makes me feel less bad about relying too much on my own car's sensors and having a couple scratches.
That's the problem with the newbies....too much reliance on technology and sensors....in the olden days, people like myself relied on our own senses and spacial awareness.....
that pfp says so many things!!!!!
Seeing a more experienced driver constantly scraping a car isn't the benchmark any 17 year old should be comparing to
Still, learn the techniques on how to drive and avoid these bumps/scraps WITHOUT the tech and sensors. We're far too reliant on technology as it is, and learning the old ways can be rewarding.
Most simple explanation for James' Tesla has more bruises than all his other cars is that James drives most of his daily miles with his Tesla.
I agree he used this car as his daily beater. Most damage happens during routine tasks where complacency reduces your attention. It does also make me wonder if it's related to his age though.
@@jagvette1I hate electric cars aswell but I can talk about them without mentioning my dislike, especially when it's irrelevant to what was initially said.
I drive all of my miles with my one car which is not banged up like this Tesla.
Yeah but the thing is that all of the damage has occurred at the ends of his journeys (parking or entering a garage), with the wheel damage being the exception.
Forgot to get the Alcolock option by the sounds of it.
@@jagvette1 having lived with one for 4 years, I can safely say over that period I've spent a substantially less amount of time waiting for my car to charge than you have at petrol/gas stations filling up. I've also had zero fires :/
Respect to you James and Richard, for keeping the saga alive. I've been an avid fan since 2003 so still watch the re-runs on a certain media platform which isn't Dave. Would've been nice if Jeremy was still involved.
Im confused why he isn't tho, I guess he's just too busy with the farm but still odd cause it seems he still loves the grand tour and has been on drivetribe in the past.
@@oliverkachani some say he sold his share of the channel, some say he didn't liked it, some say its because of what he said, all we know is... He's probably won't be featured any time soon
From my far off days as an automotive engineer, I think many wheels are 5 spoke is because the stress calculation is easy with 5 spokes. This was explained to me by Bob Upcott-Gill, the suspension guru at Rolls-Royce in the 80's, where I worked at the time.
Odd number of spokes gives wheel equal gyroscopic inertia at all fractions of rotation. Same reason windmills have three blades instead of two.
@@cameratool Odd number of spokes... one is an odd number 🤣
@@sjwright2 Citroen did it with steering wheels
I heard this years ago too actually. Dunno if it's true but that's what I heard 🤷♂️

'Sarah, my other half helped me out rocks on my driveway so I can run into them'😂😂😂😂
the jab at Lucy Brown is savage XD
I appreciate James taking the time to properly do a completely 2023-appropriate clickbaity thumbnail for the video. That is true professionalism.
We need a Lucy rebuttal... or JM roast. :-) Get 'em Lucy!
Absolutely!
Take a shot every time James gestures with his hands to the sides.
James is getting great mileage out of that T~shirt. I remember it on top gear when the stig .. I mean James did a record lap .. 😂
James May's tractor story is oddly reminiscent of the story of the fastest rental car… in the world.
Was that the Sailboat vs Car challenge in New Zealand?

The legend James May! I’m excited for the show from India.
This video made my day!
Your shirt too!!! YASSS even numbers are very pleasing to me too: in math...to make art & stencil patterns.
James I can't wait till you get your new Tesla! I bet it'll feel great.
Thank you for making me feel not as bad, I still haven't bonded with my new Toyota,
she is a magnet for dings too...but drove through the high waters in Vermont this week so well.
I CANT WAIT FOR "Our Man in India"
Him saying "i am very old" just makes me sad, worse than my dad saying it😂
I feel like the odd number of rivets and such looking better comes from it being easier to havr a rivet be direct center so its easier to be perfectly symmetrical. Say theres 31 rivets. 15 will be on 1 side working towards center and 15 on other side with the 16th rivet matching directly center.
“ToP reASOnS WHy JaMes hATes HiS TEsLA”
1- he bumps it into things
2-it has a lot of sensors
Yup. All those sensors on my Model 3 and I've dinged the back at zero miles an hour and fell off the road thanks to black ice. Dinged the NSR wheel three times in one year. It's also horrendously expensive to repair! Deep blue metallic is also a lot of paint as it's a three-stage job.
I got to the 4-minute mark before I realised James was not having a seizure at the beginning of the video 😂
Let's not forget that at the beginning, James had a Bentley now THAT is a big car.
“Sugar on the seat” I think we now know why it is prone to scrapes
I was exactly the same with my kia stinger James, I liked it, but I wasn't that attached to it as I though I would be and got complacent when driving and had a couple of low speed dings. Back in a ford ranger pick up now and love it.
Weird isn't it how things like that happen.
Hello you. Allways a pleasure to watch anything you do James
James scuffed his electric car, so he's taking it to the bloke who destroyed a Rimac . . .
James seems to have collected the scuffs and scratches just so he could get Mike to have them all corrected/fixed with channel sponsor money…
It's time for James to hire a chauffeur. ;)
Been driving a Bolt EUV and I absolutely LOVE it's small form to slice through traffic, easy to park.
I moved from a blue Model S exactly like this (that I'd run into various things) to a Model 3 Performance, and I didn't look back, the M3P is brilliant for all the reasons James mentioned. This feels like me!
but you don't have the other machines he has. Maybe 5% you?
May is turning into hammond with the amount of crashes he's having
I just love James.. I was alarmed as Mike when he said he might not live that long.. but then he just said a typical James thing lol
The rustling of May's jacket as he's doing the impression of Lucy is golden.
problem is between the seat and the steering wheel 🤣
James may is the guy who walks around with the newest iphone with no case… and crashes it more than once
Well done on the camera pan to show the wheel when May was waxing on about spokes.
I love these guys. I need to find a way to watch all the old top gear episodes without paying a fortune.
Pluto TV has them all free on demand
So does utorrent
May needs to get full PPF and ceramic coating for his cars 😂
I think that's the plan for the plug - probably on the new car though, but maybe on the S for when it's sold..
THE RUGBY SHIRT, with the hi-vis yellow jacket. I've had a crisis.
Fun fact: James May has owned that purple shirt for over 20 years.
Three spoke wheels looked wickedly cool on the Gen 1 Viper. Especially with the ones on the concept car seen on the show circuit, which were even more deeply dished.
Leaving the Tesla in Hammonds care? I kinda expect some form of pranking with the car.
Boardwalk feelers connected to the emergencybrake! 🤣
Deck chair for a seat!….and a V12 in the rear!
he will break the air conditioner and make the heater goes full
Superglue the volume dial.
@@thomasawl old and in an iPad Tesla????
What’s with the hand movements at the start 😂 man I love James ❤
Welcome to ten minutes of Captain Slow pointing at his car. I'm not joking.
you should restore james may evo, it would be amazing project
It was way beyond repair. The whole chassis was bent out of shape and would cost more than the value of the car x3 over.
Anyone else had to think about "the fastest car in the world" Top gear episode, where Jeremy crashed into a wall while moving out of the way of an agricultural vehicle, when james talked about his curbed rims?
Newzealand toyota rental episode in which a maniacal tractor driver driving at 70 mph swerved in front of jeremy😂
Odd spoked wheels are not only pleasing to the eye but also best casting practice with rolling benefits in that stresses are better relieved when spokes don’t oppose each other.
Agree on 3 spoke wheels. My Saab 900 turbo had 3 spoke wheels and I never loved the look. I'm so glad that James agrees with me!
A Tesla is a toaster. It's not a car you're inspired by, or fall in love with. It does a job. The end.
"A Tesla is a toaster" - Yep, especially when they decide to spontaneously combust during charging. 😂
@@RichardLordRixget a jobe mate 😅
@@RichardLordRixmy toaster has never done that tbh
@@harriska You've been lucky 🤣 I've seen a couple cremate a toasted teacake or two
OBJECTION. SAABs 3-Spoke wheels are still cult!
Correct. That’s the first thing I thought.
And they’re a perfect fit on a Citroen CX
James may turning 60 and feeling deaths door. I started feeling that at 25 😂
The comment of the rims is perfect, I've thought it many times. The exception could be the 6 spoke rims in the c63 AMG years ago, they look stuning.
If anything, this makes me think the paint is better on a Tesla than the rumors suggest.
Get Richard to take the motor out and fit a proper V8 😂
Richard as in Rich Rebuilds tho
So that it will take off slower, have less carrying space and will also need regular maintenance... OK, interesting idea.
Can’t wait for the follow up to this one! ✌️
SAAB 9⁵ owner and enthusiast. My anger has peaked with the "Because three spoked wheels look ridiculous" comment from The Captain. Lol
James may never crashes cars he just stops slowly into things lol
This is considered "as new" in Spain 😆
The striped jumper with the yellow hoodie is an explosive mixture!
I do the same things with my keys too. I don’t 100% trust keyless/key fob technology yet. Thanks for the video
I've always puzzled over gravel driveways. Isn't the idea to keep pebbles away from cars? Don't the tires kick them up into the paint?
cheaper? less aquaplaning? if you drive slowly (look at the owner) then it won't kick any pebbles up
Gravel driveways are excellent at discouraging thieves.
Gravel driveways are noisey, there is no way a scumbag and sneek in without waking a dog.
James is just the coolest guy ever.
The slow transition of James May into Richard Hammond has me fascinated. Next thing you know, he'll be driving fast cars in a straight line on a runway in the north.
Nice to see James on Drivetribe!

what's with the opening and closing of the hands XD
They're making fun of Lucy Brown doing those hand gestures in her videos lol he says it at 0:19
I’d recommend starting with a neon yellow, then slowly dialing in blanch until it becomes barely pastel.
Judging by the most recent Grand Tour episode, I'm not surprised James May likes driving into things XD .
If James is looking for a new electric car, I can recommend the Hyundai Ioniq 5. I drive it now for nearly one and a half year and it's great. Lots of space inside, great look, ultra fast charging and a pretty well range.
James May is a national treasure 😊👍🏼
I missed the old timer so much 😂😂😂 haven't seen him since the grand tour break up
"Tesla's have really thin flaky paint". Wow what a coincidence they also have a really thin flaky CEO.
Time to take his license off him. 🤣
Well I guess James is finally at that age…time to give up the driving. Unfortunate really but everyone eventually goes thru it.
Time to play...'Phrases never uttered in the Chicago area, except by me':
'The stripey jumper is back!'
Very interesting - I rented a Model X, Model S and Model 3 Performance before buying a Model 3 AWD, I think the Model 3's coil springs make it a better drivers car than the Model S, which is more of a highway car than a country lane vehicle. I think James will enjoy the trade, and seeing the Model S as a 'Tool' not a 'Friend' also makes sense for the S, the sometimes wallowy air suspension make the insane power a bit of a one trick straight line pony, whereas the coil suspension of the Model 3, especially all wheel drive, makes it much more engaging on twisty roads, especially punching out of corners. The reasons I didn't go for the performance was mainly cost, I could not afford it, but also no need for the much higher top speed and the larger wheels are less efficient, and I wanted maximum range - it's also slightly too stiff a ride - the AWD, especially with the 18" rims and 'boost' purchase was the sweet spot for me at the time, and is a real stealth car against pretty much anything except a performance Tesla.
Might be worth waiting for the rumoured refresh of the Model 3 coming soon.
I agree with you. The Model 3 AWD LR with acceleration boost is a better option than the performance. The bigger rims are really just a liability, and reduce your range as well.
Oh my gosh, the dirtyness of that car makes me cringe. Can't wait to see it cleaned up! I think in his older age, James has inherited some of Richards driving or shall we say, crashing habits! LOL
His other cars are fine, seems that this one he takes as an appliance more than a car.
@@nm2712Or rather a car and not a mantle piece.
Id like a tour of James May's bicycles please.
For someone as cautious as James, he seems to be a careless low speed driver. 😂

Thats how you introduce some individual character to a tesla. Glad to see it is being treated with the respect it deserves.
You'll find all Tesla's are treated the same way. I ubered around LA for a week and every Tesla I rode in had some damage just like this.

He needs a mobility scooter
Nobody cares if you were (or actually weren’t) first.

Nah let the kids have fun 🧒👶🧒
You should prank James and wrap his Tesla with pink and purple print to match his shirt! 😀
It’s soooo brave to admit you keep the key on the wiper.
So this is the appliance that James drives to the pub and then hopes helps drive him home lol
Dunno how they could make a video about a car I don’t like actually entertaining, but here I am!
LOL, I was thinking, why not touch it up at the Smallest Cog 😋
So what James is saying, "I will sell my dog if its difficult". Cold man. I hope the new dog fills you with joy.
I hope James doesnt sell his dog.
He should run it over, buy an aligator and feed the dog to his new friend.
Even/odd thing has to do more I think with the fact that "5" "10" lists usually have compromises in order to make that round number. Whereas "7" "9" seems to be more indicative of a more consistent and honest list
