  • Time for an updated WorldBox map making video! We're going to spend a little more time on the details this time, as well as just making a larger map overall. Hopefully you'll either learn something, or even just enjoy watching the map-making process because its kind of satisfying.

      There was a bridge update tho I'm pretty sure. The Totally Accurate Bridge Simulator update. Despite the name being a play on TABS it is a real thing. They can bridge over shallow water, tho I don't think it can be too wide.
      What I think they need to add are naval battles so boats are more than just transport. Maybe flesh them out more with traits that affect speed or add offensive capabilities like cannons or harpoons.

    What makes the most sense would be putting mountains right on the border of the savanna facing the ocean, many deserts and savanna’s are bordered by mountains because the mountains block moisture and rain

    • @dragex6582

      While mostly true, I will point out that rivers CAN split naturally. It's called river bifurcation. It's not necessarily permanent, especially if the 2 branches meet again, but that depends on the material and size of the island formed, thanks to erosion. But rivers and streams CAN split naturally. Just, as someone else said, it's rare.

    Hey bro- Have you ever considered a run of this game where you basically play Dungeons and Dragons? You take one member from each main human-like race (or maybe just 4 humans if the orc and elf butt heads) and send them into a world like the one from the 1,000 years of war video. Then, you closely monitor their stats, weapons, etc., and arrange fights for them with classic foes like bandits, dragons, and necromancers. Heck, even have some flourishing towns scattered about so they can "stop at the local inn", and elemental towers surrounded by powerful monsters to act as "dungeons".

If the towns are different races they would start fighting. Great idea but world box doesn’t really have the facilities for that without mods

    one of my favorite things to do when i finish a map, now with the newest 0.14 release, is after i finish my map, i box out a small part of my map with a 2 or 3 thick mountain wall. Then I go into debug (click the cheeseburger in settings a bunch and then click the green bug in the top right corner) and scroll down and click the settings that apply infinite resources and fast culture and stuff to kingdoms. After applying all those, put it on superspeed or x5 speed and put some people in the box and wait until an awesome looking advanced city is there. when you are satisfied with how developed it is, get life eraser tool and erase all the people, then delete the mountain walls and fix what used to be under the mountains. Apply a lot of trees and shrubs and now you have a neat overgrown ancient city as part of the terrain. Maybe a future city during a game will take advantage of the unique end-game watch towers and buildings inside the abandoned city. If you want the city to be destroyed instead, just apply madness on the people then life eraser after you're happy with the city's level of destruction.

    Great video! Personally I like building on a world-scale, i.e building several continents/1 massive continent, what I like about this and focus on doing with this is designing bodys of water (i.e bays, oceans, lakes) and having all of them come together into 1 world. I think bodys of water are sort of the make or break of a good map. This also lets me add more biomes in a more realistic way, but its fine if you have unrealistic biomes next to eachother, it's all art and art does not have to be realistic, I appreciate your style a lot.
    A few tips are incorporating peninsulas & islands as prominent features in a map, I think this varies the shape & makes communities feel more geographically defined (Like they are in real life, borders form around water, rivers, mountains, and worldbox will sort of follow this too. I wish they updated the way ai works to put more emphasis on this)
    Also using gradients to blend shapes, convey height (colors do this regardless of if it makes sense, manipulate the biomes) lowness, wetness, and tempature. Mountains will *almost always* have 1 wet-side and 1 dry side (ex. Jungle - Savannah, Plain forest - sand, etc, even putting in some swamps inbetween mountain ranges works too). This makes for a great transition between biomes that is realistic! I also like to use wetter/fertile biomes (like jungle/forests) alongside lakes, rivers, and oceans
    For rivers, noticed you didn't add any, personally I think not adding any rivers is fine. It's better to have no forests than unrealistic ones & they can interrupt movement of people if you don't like that. For rivers you have to remember the high points of your map, water flows from high up areas to low areas, and do not go from 1 coast to another. A river drains into a lake, and then that lake drains into a water-shed/coast. To convey whether its draining or being drained you can use water gradients to convey water going lower and/or make it thicker at the top and then get more narrow.
    Most important thing to remember, Have fun with it, build a map you want to make and feel free to disregard realistic features, make fantasy explanations for natural phenoma, different scales.

    Love the video. The only thing is that IIRC rivers do not split, they converge. Usually starting as smaller streams from higher points(like from that body of water in the frozen area). As far as I remember this is because water takes the shortest path possible, continuisly eroding more terrain to make the river wider and thus, easier. There are of course exceptions but someone more knowledgeble would have to expliain why such circumstances happen.
    Thanks for the video!

    This kind of thing works a lot better if you start with full land...and carve the seas out of it, instead. Then you can layer your way down, and everything is much tighter...you don't get those weird deep ocean pixels right next to the coast in the middle of the shallows for no reason. The soil level is "neutral", and then you cut the seas out of it...and build up the hills/mountains onto it. It also means smaller islands don't look like the top of a tower in the middle of the deep water.

I like making maps that make geographical/geological sense, so I looked up the different climate zones (temperate, tropical. subtropical, deserts, etc.) to understand where they are located and why. I can now make more realistic fantasy worlds. Understanding why a certain biome is located where it is definitely helps.

Also I think it'd add to the realism if you make rivers grow slightly larger as the flow further downstream, as well as add a few river deltas whenever they flow into larger bodies of water.

    Plains->jungle->savanah->arcane->inferno
    Or Permafrost->swamp->mushroom->plains
    Neutral areas plains,lemon,enchanted, etc
