I've had my hedgehog for five months now and Tori's videos helped so much when I was panicking wondering if I'd done the right thing. Now my little guy is happy and healthy and I have Tori (among many others online! So many resources!!!) to thank for advice! :D
I'd like to share a little info with noobs like myself: in cold climates you will obviously have heating in your cage/ vivarium. But it is important to have the room warm when getting your hog out for petting/ handling. I thought my hog was really anti-social for our first 5 months, but now summer is starting he has become really happy and friendly! Clearly, our house, heated to 19C in winter, is too cold for him. He was fine having a footbath in warm water, but became grumpy 2 minutes after coming out of it. Headed straight for his snuggle bag asap. Would not unball for handling. But now the sun's out and the ambient temperature is over 20, he loves being held and exploring! I have never seen anyone mention this issue in countless 'grumpy hog' videos, so I'm passing it round to help others.
This is so helpful, in a few weeks I will be visiting an open house at a hedgehog breeder to learn more and hold them to make sure their right for me. Woohoo

Sort of like a viv but the whole top is meshed. I want to try bioactive, want something that looks nicer, and something that is a bit more solid/sturdy.

I got Finland after seeing a post of someone selling him and he was living in a small storage tub that gave him ZERO room to roam only to sleep and get in his wheel with food and water dishes in between. do you think you could ever make a video on bedding/cleaning a bedding cage for hedgehogs? i also have a midwest cage with fleece, and i noticed he still likes to burrow. he has a burrow box but still likes to try and get under the fleece lol. and he has plenty of hides, he just likes to dig up fleece, so i think it’s going to be best if i switch him over to bedding. i’ve had guinea pigs so i know what it’s like to deal with chips, but i wanted insight as to how much it costs to keep up with bedding and how much work it’ll take
Seconded! My little guy is a burrower, but bedding is quite expensive and I'm wondering if there's a way I can compromise because I have so much fleece and adore the easy cleanup!

I live in the UK, I have a critter nation cage (one level) and well in the summer I have the windows open and fans on because I’m hot. I have three heat lamps under the cage so it’s hot all over the cage and not just the one side that’s hot from just the one. And I add extra blanket when playtime and I have hand warmer pad things lol and extra fleece, warm bed/hut. Is that okay? Will they still get cold? I’m just worried and suffer from anxiety (fun fact my hedgehog is a support animal) and so glad if you could reply?
For the heat lamp situation it should be fine but keep in mind if you are keeping a hedgehog in a room with a fan or something then you might want a thermostat because the temperature is changing a lot. For example I live in florida and keep my hedgehog in my room and when I turn the fan on after a few mins I can hear the heat lamp turn on afterwards but the temperature in the cage always stays near 76-78
@@friendlyneighbor7221 Hey! I know this comment is old but perhaps you're still active to give me feedback. I'm fairly new to the hedgehog world and a bit confused. I usually like to keep my room at 70°F. Question #1: Do i need to put two heating lamps on either side of my Hedgehogs enclosure or is one in the center just fine? Question #2: Since I do keep my room at 70°F, which is very cold, would the heating lamps be enough to up the heat levels in the cage to 74-80°F?
Typical Pixel To answer your first question you could just have one in the center because even if the ends of the cage are 70 he shouldn’t hibernate at all! If you want to make sure you could buy a cheep thermometer and set it at the end of the cage but that’s not necessary If you have a thermostat. For question #2 a heating lamp will be perfect for that! It sounds like you are very well prepared and I’m sorry my response was so long and late! Also keep in mind I’m not a vet just going off of my having a hedgehog for over a year now so do what you want with this info 😊😊
So recently I bought a hedge hog from someone who was planning on putting her down if they couldn’t sell her within a week so I impulsively bought her, I don’t know much about them but I really want to make sure I’m taking care of her properly. My sister has a bearded dragon and had a 10 gallon tank she didn’t need so I’ve been using it(I’ll be getting a new one hopefully within the week), she loves to run around but it’s super small.
I was going to get a dog kennel cage but now im considering a storage box/a bin cage just because i live in england and its usually colder and im going to get a themometer and a heat lamp
My husband and I are torn between getting a hedgehog or a chinchilla first. We aren't planning on getting a pet anytime soon, but we want to maybe start doing research on how much of a financial investment both animals will be.
Hi! Noob here. Currently preparing for our hedgie and Ihave a question...when using a bin cage, is the light ok to just sit on the wiring like that? Can we use the thermometer/thermostat you posted about in your heating video in these bin cages? Thank you in advance!
i am thinking of getting a hedgehog and i would like to know if i can make a homemade hedgehog cage out of wood and put a cage wire of some sort on top for the hedgehogs heat lamp because i do live in a cold place in the wintertime also i have a cat and the cat doesn't come into the room where im thinking of putting the hedgehogs cage in but my cat will be curious and shes not as big of a hunter for mice or rodents she likes mice most of the time so its not a big worry for me but i was wondering if that could possibly be do able
So I was going to ask, I live in the south so it’s pretty hot, and I have a blood flow issue that causes me to get super cold. So typically we keep the house at 72- 73 degrees Fahrenheit on average. Is that okay or is the house too like- open of a space?
My friend used to have a hedgehog and I don't think they really researched that much before getting him, but I don't know enough about hedgehog care to say wether their care was okay. They kept him in one of those under bed storage bins on the bathroom floor with the floor heating on. I'm kind of doubting this was this safe? I don't think they ever really measured how warm it kept the floor, so idk how they would have known if it was alright for the hedgehog. They also only had a wooden hide and a (thankfully big) hamster wheel in his bin, so the hedgehog used to always climb out (the bin had very low edges so it was very easy for it to do) and wander around the bathroom floor. They kept detergents and other cleaning stuff in the under the sink cabin, so at least I would have been very concerned about it getting to them. They never bothered to get him a new bin or give him more enrichment, so they just let him do this when ever he felt like it. They fed him cat food with corn and rice in it and and sometimes gave him a couple superworms as a treat. To my understanding at least corn isn't really good for them (don't know about rice?) and shouldn't they have more insects? The hedgehog has already passed away a long time ago, and I'm not thinking of getting one (at least right now) so this isn't really important anymore, just something I've been thinking about, so if someone more experienced could let me know what they think I'd appreciate it :)
I was thinking of upgrading to a 2x3 c&c cage and my house is usually around 72°-74° and I do have a heat lamp....would that be a good cage for my home?
With the Midwest guinea pig habit why not change out the canvas bottom for a coroplast bottom? (I am planning on doing that with mine for my guinea pigs)
I have a couple questions lol 1) Would a cage for a rabbit work? 2) Do they use small ramps? 3) Could I make the cage longer than wide if I decide to make one? 4) Would you recommend online bought or could I get one from a store?
1. If is big enough and the bar spacing is correct, yes. 2. They typically do best with all one level. 3. You can make the cage whatever dimensions you’d like as long as they meet 4sqft minimum. 4. You can do either! :)
I love watching these videos they help me a lot! But before I get a hedgehog I have a question. So my mom is making me keep my hedgehog in my room and I’m totally okay with it but my room gets really hot in the summer and the temperature would be good for the animal but not so much me so I was wondering if it’ll be okay to have an AC on while the heat lamp is on aswell? Will the heat heat up my room with a bin cage or will the AC make it so the heat won’t do much? 😕🤔
@@jean-mariemorrone5145 you can take the lid and cut a square in it and use mesh (I personally use the top of a locker shelf and sit it over the hole) and get a heat lamp and sit it on top
@@kaythx oh ok great thank you!! Picking up 2 hedgehogs on the 23rd and was going back an forth on wire or bin cage but I really wanted the bin and I was going to buy from the breeder but her bin set up is 120(no heat lamp and smaller wheel, 20 extra for the larger one so ultimately 140) and 180 for wire cage with heat lamp and larger wheel(160 with smaller wheel)..so I'm just getting the stuff myself so much cheaper but I just want to make sure I have the proper heating with the bin!! Thanks so much!!!! Oh an ps I need 2 since I'm getting 2 babies lol so double all that I just mentioned lol
I know you have to heat the cage but if you take it out of the cage in a around 60 room for a little while to play with them cuddle etc would that be ok or will that be bad for them?
Hey Tori! As you’re other hedgehogs grew older did they have any issues with controlling their bodily functions? Such as peeing and pooping? My hedgehog Nala is 4&1/2 and isn’t using her potty area anymore but I can’t figure out if she’s actively choosing to poop and pee everywhere (including her bed) or if she can’t control where she goes. I plan on taking her to the vet soon anyways for her check up but I was just wondering if you had experienced anything similar with your boys. Thanks.
I didn’t notice much of a difference with my boys but neither of them were potty trained so they were already going wherever they wanted to begin with. I’ve heard of elderly hedgehogs getting messier as they age, but I don’t have a lot of personal experience with it
I have a critter nation cage. I am getting my hedgehog this weekend I have the same heating system you have but I chose the 10 inch lamp dome. My question is my house is always a little drafty and I don’t want the cage to get cold. Can’t I just put fleece or something on the sides of the cage on the outside to try and help hold the heat in?
Hey girl, if I have an open top cage how deep do you think it has to be? Because i have deep, long, and tall flower planters I was thinking I can convert into a hedgehog cage, just because they’re really big and roomy. It’s about 10 inches deep
What happens if the temperature goes over 28 celcius degrees? Summer hasn’t even begun in Chile and today outside the temperature was 33°C, I got really concerned and kept it below 28ºC inside my hedgehogs cage. It wasn’t a big deal because I was at home all day long, but I’m worried that this could happen while I’m away. Thanks!
I love you and your animals so much😊😘❤️. You have helped me a lot. Thank you so much for all your very helpful videos❤️❤️❤️you definitely deserve sooo much more subscribers🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️😍😍😘😘😊😊
your videos are always helpful! instead of a heat lamp, could I use a heat pad? the one i have is called "K&H Deluxe Heated Animal Pad Cover, 9" L x 12" W"
So i just binge watched your entire hedgehog care playlist and i sent all the links in your description for cage wheel ect... to my mom including the critor nation cage and also a lot of snacks for my future hedgie and alot of accessories and toys ect.. and i am fully prepared to own a hedgehog i know all the risks plus care tips thx very much my hedgie is coming in in the summer around jully prolly
I thought you needed a 48 X 48 enclosure, I’m referring more specifically to a wire cage. I absolutely can not find one with those dimensions. Are there any links to a reference? I didn’t see any in description :/
I can not find a critter nation that's 4ft I only see the one that's 36in wide and has a wire step. Been trying to find a cage for the longest time....
If my room only gets maybe slightly cold during the winter, should I consider a more enclosed cage rather than a wire cage so that the heat doesn't escape or is that okay? I'll still have a heating source no matter what, just wanna be sure :> Edit: Because my room isn't too cold at all, I just wanna be cautious
Ya missed one thing... Hedgehogs have tiny lungs. That's why they're prone to respiratory infections. I'm building an enclosure so that's how I ended up here but looks like I already knew this stuff 😅 thank you regardless
Hey I’m thinking about getting a hedge hog and am just a little worried about the heating aspect. Im wondering if I were to buy a wire cage some what similar to yours and then decided to modify it so that that there was plastic on all three sides then a shorter set of plastic on the front would that retain enough heat but also enough ventilation?
I live in Arizona and am really debating between a solid cage and a wire cage. I prefer the look of wire, but am concerned about heating it in winter when the temps drop at night. However, would a solid cage get too hot in the summer?
My hedgie poops ALL THE TIME, on me, on everything in his cage...healthy poop yes. In his litter tes but on all the fleece, the tubes, everything. Any suggestions? He is almost a yr old, male.
I use a plastic bin cage for Toad and have recently got a heat lamp for him. Unfortunately, I had to use the clamp to attach it because I was afraid the plastic would melt(it doesn't have any metal on the lid) so I had to take off the lid. My house is pretty drafty so what would you recommend to keep the heating well in my hedgie's cage
I am getting a hedgehog soon and I am having a hard time finding where to buy cages. I want my hedgehog to have plenty of room but I have a cat and I would like a raised option.
Is a Tortoise Habitat 38 x 24 x 11.8 inches A good cage? Our home gets pretty cold and no were online recommends anything for warmer cage that is 1 level. 2 levels make me nervous about hedgehog falling off ladder or something.
Hello, I am getting my first hedge hog and I was looking into the critter nation cage, however I was wondering what you use for the sides (walls) looks like some kind of board covered with fleece? I just wanted to know what you use ! (:
Oml this helped so much! For my first hedgehog I got a wired cage but I started thinking of what would of happened if the heat wasn’t enough but now I know! I might get a plastic bin cage but we will see ty ❤️
I am looking at getting a critter nation double unit and was wondering if you could explain how you would heat both levels? I understand the top unit but am struggling to figure out the bottom level.
Im getting a hedgie. My room is normally at 69 degrees. I've looked at vivariums, but the one I saw is no longer available, so I've been considering wire cages. Would a heat lamp on a wire cage be sufficient enough for the correct temperature? I know you talked about this in the video, but I just don't know anymore. Or do you have any other suggestions for cages? Thanks.
I have been wanting a hedgehog, but I worry greatly about heating the cage during the winter. Are heat lamps suitable for 24/7 use if needed? How do I provide a heat source during lose outages? There have been times where we have lost power for 4 to 7 days before.
You should join "African pygmy hedgehog club UK" on Facebook. I'm in Northern Ireland and the standerd practice in the UK is vavariums. Because of the soild walls to keep in heat. However some use ZooZone2s but they are no where near as good as you can't even have a bucket wheel stand upright. What I will be doing when I move out is getting a custom made "tvt vavarium" you should look at there page on Facebook! It's great!
I have a question abou heating. Where I live it's literally never cold or even chilly, it's actually pretty hot if you don't have the AC on so... do I need to have something that will make the cage a little cooler or do I need a heat setup, or do I just leave it like that?
My heggie uses her sandbox, I was so surprised, im in love with her my daughter got her for me for my birthday, I've wanted her for So long ,I really Really appreciate your videos thank-you 😊
What kind of flooring do you recommend for a hedgehog? I've heard some people say wood shaving, some people say carpet, etc. also, do hedgehogs have a certain smell to them? would you recommend keeping them in a bedroom?
I’m no hedgehog expert, but i’ve has alot of small animals and wood shavings can affect their respiratory systems negatively, Id say repti-carpet or paper bedding.
PLEASE ANSWER ME... so I have a new hedgehog, my room is naturally the temp. They need but her cage is about 2.3 square feet and the pet store said that it was the top notch cage.... Do I need to buy a new cage then is it needs a minimum of 4 square feet cage??
I never hear people talking about when a room is too hot, or how to cool it down. So I was wondering how to keep a hedgehog cool if it gets too hot? My room lacks insulation, so it can get up to 85 degrees in the summer (it’s mostly at 78 though) Also, is it okay to point a fan at a cage?
So I’m planning on getting a hedgehog in the near future and wanna research as much as possible first. When searching on Pinterest for diy hedgehog cages, I see a lot of Guinea pig cages pop up. Would one of those designs be ok for a hedgehog?
Im planning on getting a hedgehog in about a year. I'm putting the cage in the basement due to spacr complications but our basement is the coldest part of the jouse during winter. Would a dpace heater and a heating system work well with for this?

I keep my house at 68°F and i am using a heat lamp and i am wondering if its ok to have a critter nation
Sugerr Cookie that perfect.
I'm so happy you're uploading these days! I'm getting a hedgehog soon so your channel has seriously helped me a ton right now
So recently I bought a hedge hog from someone who was planning on putting her down if they couldn’t sell her within a week so I impulsively bought her, I don’t know much about them but I really want to make sure I’m taking care of her properly.
Thank you in advance!
my house is not cold, but I do have a wired cage....I want to just put a blanket around my cage to help retain warmth, would you reccomend this?
i am thinking of getting a hedgehog and i would like to know if i can make a homemade hedgehog cage out of wood and put a cage wire of some sort on top for the hedgehogs heat lamp because i do live in a cold place in the wintertime also i have a cat and the cat doesn't come into the room where im thinking of putting the hedgehogs cage in but my cat will be curious and shes not as big of a hunter for mice or rodents she likes mice most of the time so its not a big worry for me but i was wondering if that could possibly be do able
This helped so much I’m getting a hedgehog for Christmas
Stay safe Tori 🙏 rip Draco and blaze like this if you wish they were still alive 😢
Tori talking about the greatness of open front terrariums...😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’m a big fan 😅
You should do a video on Handling a hedgehog. I just got my baby and she is so precious, but I’m having trouble figuring out how to properly hold her.
Hoping to have that out next week! :D
Yikes. Sounds like they could’ve benefitted from a bit more research!
You could if you already have the cage :) If you don’t own it already though or aren’t getting it second hand, C&C grids are typically cheaper.
Your videos are so so helpful! I’ve actually just got my hedgehog today, and you help me so much!! Thank you, life’s a lot easier now🙏🏼💖
I have a couple questions lol
1) Would a cage for a rabbit work?
2) Do they use small ramps?
3) Could I make the cage longer than wide if I decide to make one?
4) Would you recommend online bought or could I get one from a store?
1. If is big enough and the bar spacing is correct, yes.
2. They typically do best with all one level.
3. You can make the cage whatever dimensions you’d like as long as they meet 4sqft minimum.
4. You can do either! :)
all of the cages I saw had those ladders and I could not find one like yours which would be perfect
I found an abandoned hedgehog outside and I'm keeping it. Thank you for this
How do you heat a bin cage??
@@jean-mariemorrone5145 you're welcome! I'm so glad I could help!
I know you have to heat the cage but if you take it out of the cage in a around 60 room for a little while to play with them cuddle etc would that be ok or will that be bad for them?
The one you’ve got is that minimal size? Just curious since it doesn’t look at much as I thought
Thanks!
Helps so much my dad is getting me a hedgehog for christmas
I love you and your animals so much😊😘❤️. You have helped me a lot. Thank you so much for all your very helpful videos❤️❤️❤️you definitely deserve sooo much more subscribers🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️😍😍😘😘😊😊
I just got a hedgehog and your videos help so much
Hello 👋🏻 question regarding the cage bin.. did you make the lid to the cage bin? For the heat lamp? If so how did you do that?
your videos are always helpful! instead of a heat lamp, could I use a heat pad? the one i have is called "K&H Deluxe Heated Animal Pad Cover, 9" L x 12" W"
Rose * I think heatpads are fine, as long as you set the right temperature. My hedgehog is nearly 2 and she’s had one all her life.
I personally don’t recommend heat pads because hedgehogs do best with ambient heating.
I can not find a critter nation that's 4ft
I only see the one that's 36in wide and has a wire step. Been trying to find a cage for the longest time....
If my room only gets maybe slightly cold during the winter, should I consider a more enclosed cage rather than a wire cage so that the heat doesn't escape or is that okay? I'll still have a heating source no matter what, just wanna be sure :>
Edit: Because my room isn't too cold at all, I just wanna be cautious
Ya missed one thing... Hedgehogs have tiny lungs. That's why they're prone to respiratory infections. I'm building an enclosure so that's how I ended up here but looks like I already knew this stuff 😅 thank you regardless
Hey I’m thinking about getting a hedge hog and am just a little worried about the heating aspect. Im wondering if I were to buy a wire cage some what similar to yours and then decided to modify it so that that there was plastic on all three sides then a shorter set of plastic on the front would that retain enough heat but also enough ventilation?
Hi there!
What is the name of the plastic you put along the edges of the wire cages? And where can I find it?
I live in Arizona and am really debating between a solid cage and a wire cage. I prefer the look of wire, but am concerned about heating it in winter when the temps drop at night. However, would a solid cage get too hot in the summer?
If it gets to hot you could take away the heat lamp
This is so comprehensive, really helpful. Thanks so much!
Sense my house is 75 in temperature then do I still have to use a heat lamp I might get the supplies today along with my hedgehog
Is a Tortoise Habitat
38 x 24 x 11.8 inches
A good cage?
Love your vids!!! Helps me a lot with my boy milton
It's great!
That's crazy!! I'm in Northern Ireland as well and I'm really worried about my hedgehog going into hibernation or dying from the cold, any tips?
What size terrarium should you get for a hedgehog
I have a question abou heating. Where I live it's literally never cold or even chilly, it's actually pretty hot if you don't have the AC on so... do I need to have something that will make the cage a little cooler or do I need a heat setup, or do I just leave it like that?
I’m getting a hedgehog and I’ve been watching all of your videos
should i get a bin cage?? im really debating what kind of cage to get.I do need a cheap alternative.Any ideas??
With the C&C cage what can you use to cover the sides and what size would you buy
PLEASE ANSWER ME... so I have a new hedgehog, my room is naturally the temp. They need but her cage is about 2.3 square feet and the pet store said that it was the top notch cage.... Do I need to buy a new cage then is it needs a minimum of 4 square feet cage??
Yes, I would recommend upgrading. 2.3sqft is very small for a hedgehog.
Yeah you definitely need a bigger cage. While pet store employees have good intentions their information is generally wrong.
My bedroom usually stays up to 70 to 75 degrees it’s always hot in here
I live in Arizona. It's super hot here even indoors. Usually never under 75° F. Does she still need a heat lamp?
Following this thread. Pls help 😊
You should be fine without one until winter comes
Down here in the south, I have never had to heat my hedgehogs cage.
If you live in Florida, you know what I mean...
Em & Em dame here in Las Vegas lol
Oh yup. Im in Florida, I know what you mean
Try dubai 🔥🥵
How do you feel about sand baths for hedgehogs?
How often do you have to buy your hedgehogs food?🙂🦔
Holly Woolford probably right before the food runs out
So I’m planning on getting a hedgehog in the near future and wanna research as much as possible first. When searching on Pinterest for diy hedgehog cages, I see a lot of Guinea pig cages pop up. Would one of those designs be ok for a hedgehog?
If you have a cage and opt to have a pen for them to run around in aswell - would you also need to heat the pen for any amount of time they are in it?
I was wondering myself for a new cage yesterday!! Oh thanks this video is on the right time
Im planning on getting a hedgehog in about a year. I'm putting the cage in the basement due to spacr complications but our basement is the coldest part of the jouse during winter. Would a dpace heater and a heating system work well with for this?
I love the way critter nations look. What would you consider a "pretty cage"
Hahah, I don’t mind them personally but I get a lot of comments about them looking like prisons 😅
Were do you get the fleece sets?
Question, what is the white tray in the critter nation cage for your hedgy?
Thank you tori your the best to tell us what cage tq very much
