In 1993 in the Battle of Mogadishu, depicted partially in the movie 'Blackhawk Down', one of the task force sent in to rescue the Americans was the Malaysians, the result of that encounter for the Malaysian forces is one fatality and 7 wounded. The Malaysian rescue task forces acted under the auspices of the UN banner. You don't get to read that in the papers.
Blackhawk Down played down role of Malaysian & Pakistani army. The 1st army that went in to help the Americans were 19th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment of the Malaysian Army and 11th Regiment, Grup Gerak Khas (few GGK operators during rescue the Super 6-1 crews)[7th Battalion, Frontier Force Regiment of the Pakistan Army. Without the Malaysian and Pakistani army, more Americans soldier may not be saved!

Malaysia is small nation and still in the rank as development country. Our military doctrine is to defend our sovereignty just that. Those military hardware, software and equipment is to defend not to attack any one and not to become us as an aggressor to the our neighbors. Malaysia is NAM members and if any conflicts we believe the diplomatic way is the best solution. Our economy is not allowed us to have war with any one. However, Malaysia actively involved in many UN peace missions and across the continents up to the Balkan. Currently, our force also participated in UN mission in Lebanon, some countries in Africa. We also experience guerrilla warfare against the communist during the Soviet era. Our military foundation is setup by the British and no wonder our doctrine is more to the west not to the east doctrine. Not to mention we also gain combat experience in abroad and the most popular is battle of Bakara Market together with the US Delta force against hundreds of Somalia gunmans. Beside that our navy also joined the international efforts to combat the international pirates in the Eden Gulf. We friend with every one. We have bilateral military training with the world super power air force Cope Taufan and other regular join force training such as pitch black autralia and FPDA. Those friendly traininng significantly develop our force strengh. Malaysis spending on defense only about 5% from our GDP. Our force is not the great force, but we dare to challenge any threat and we will fight until the last man stand..

Angkatan Tentera means Armed Forces. The Army's GGK was formed with the assistance of the Royal Marines Commando. Hence the Green berets. One of the police's special operations unit was also formed with the UK's help, the VAT69 Commando was trained by the SAS, which also showed in their choice of beret colour, the sand/tan beret.

FYI, sand yellow beret in 6:02, is actually VAT 69 (Very Able Trooper 69) or simply called as '69 Komando'. They are belongs to Royal Malaysian Police, not the Army. The nucleus team were trained by British SAS in 1969. For the past of early 20 years, they are more focusing in jungle warfare but now, they are much capable to operate in any kind of situations. That's why they are wearing same beret color as British SAS.
