Welcome back everyone! Today I'm reading "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by the eminent science fiction author Philip K. Dick. This is actually the short story that the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Total Recall and it's 2012 remake starring Colin Farrell are based on. I am pushing my luck here, but there are a few references to alien lifeforms that grow on the moon (known here as Luna) and Mars, so I am considering this to be speculative evolution/biology 😉 I will also quickly mention: There are, as per usual, a few small mistakes. The main character of the story is named Douglas Quail, for some reason I refer to him at one point as "Dale" and another as "Quill". No idea why, just my dumb brain not registering words properly. Other than that there's a few *very* minor mistakes but nothing too egregious 🤦♂️ Thanks again for watching, don't forget to like, comment, share and subscribe and become a Patron to help me out! Take it easy, BtQ.
I am LOVING all the audio book readings. I came here originally for the All Tomorrows content but I'm very glad I subscribed and stuck around. Thank you for all that you do!
@@BewareCast the reviews of the movies iv watched all said the movies take a drastic turn from the short story, and they were right. Although that was a great story, and the way you present it is amazing. Im gonna see about watching the Arnold version again now
Really? Reeeeeaaaally? Into that huh? I mean sure, they use paper and typewriter rather than computers. Why not. All that advanced tech and no AI in sight. Okay sure. Or is this not one of the stories the interdimensional being told him?
Nicely done my dude👍 Loving the new content, as I was wondering what (if anything) you would decide to cover after/other than the “all tomorrow’s” and “man after man” type stuff Also, Idk why but I find your voice sorta calming, tho not in a asmr type way, like….🤔…..soothing I quess?🤦♀️No? Wtf ever, hopefully you get me😅 But anyways, please keep the great content coming! ….btw, on a side note, I wonder if there’s anybody who listens to this who has no clue about it inspiring the movie/movies? I mean I doubt that it would be that many considering that the people who are into your channel are most likely gonna be into sci-fi so?🤨 Tho if there are some, then after listening they might go watch it and get into the genre. The world could always use more Sci-fi nerds after all!😅 Just a thought😏
Ha thanks. Yeah I've decided to go the way of interesting sci-fi in general, the channel is sort of big enough to take the algorithmic hit if a video doesn't do so well now lol. I'm glad you don't find my voice annoying haha and yes, more sci-fi fans is always good :) thank you for watching!
Well, this story was a total mindfuck. And also pretty compelling, too! EDIT: No, really. From the opening words, the story sucks you in, delivering a mind-bending thriller-cum-comedy of errors like no other. The final twist wherein Quail's second, more improbable fake memory turns out to be another real memory of his is also both shocking and provoking: How many memories does Quail know and how many lives has he lead prior to this point? It's good stuff, and as my first story from Philip K. Dick, it's a good one.
If so worried about straying too far from the BtQ brand, why not start an audiobook channel that allows you to produce these videos separately from BtQ content? I enjoy these and don't mind the difference in themes, but understand and agree with keeping things consistent for the BtQ channel
Nah I'm not too worried to be honest, I always wanted to branch out more anyway and a second channel without any All Tomorrows stuff wont do well (UA-cam is already over-saturated with general sci-fi channels). Theres really nothing else to say about All Tomorrows at this point so it's a case of finding new things to do here to keep BtQ going. I appreciate the suggestion though and thanks for sticking around :)
That was a fun wacky old story. I loved it! Wish the women were better written but I'm guessing this a very old book so I've come to expect that. It was fun!
I'm afraid I don't really get the twist, can you explain? So the last thing I understand is that while implanting the fantasy that he saves the world from aliens simply by existing, he still keeps talking about Mars?
@@lfgang9994 to my understanding, its all true. He went to mars and made a pact with the small alians. It was seen as a childish fantasy but was actually what really happened.
There's something that always bothered me about this story. Assuming it was always the plan to rewrite Quail's memory after the fact, why did they turn him into a middle class office worker?
I just want to hear” we can build you”. Can you read that? I’m sure it’s not that hard, it’s a relatively short novella. It is selfish that no one will😕. Just like no one has yet read Aldous Huxley’s second novel, Ape and Essence. I’m just gonna listen to do androids dream of electric sheep again and wish you would read the right things
@@BewareCast I know..I was just hoping it was going to be that one. I was being obnoxious but facetious 😊If you ever read it though, you will be revered and well loved😄
I'm very uncomfortable with the casual sexism on display in this otherwise very good story. The only females in this story are either presented as clueless and vain or malicious and cruel albeit in a limited capacity :-/
My thoughts exactly!! And the way Shirley's breasts were such a focus?? Like really?? You couldn't have done without mentioning that?💀 Though the story IS pretty old so there's that. And I agree that apart from that it was really good, same for the narrator
