I live in Port Elizabeth and stay faithful to a very established, well stocked pet store. Why are shrimp varieties so limited. The only types they stock are Red and Yellow Neocaridina and Cristal Reds. There is such a variety of shrimp for Aquaria. Apparently, they are supplied only by local breeders???
Most aquatic pet shops will stock red and yellow Neos. If you're lucky you'll find blue ones. This is because these are the most popular colours among the average client. People who just want a few shrimp for their fish tank. And the reason why they stock only Crystal red Caridina is because it's considered one of the easiest caridina species to keep so people might be able to keep them successfully in their aquariums with little knowledge. It doesn't make sense for pet shops to stock very expensive and fancy shrimp because the average person won't ever pay that much for a single shrimp, and secondly, they have no idea how to care for them, so it looks bad for the store if the animals keep dying once you buy them.
So if you are looking for a wide variety, you'll need to go to a pet store that specializes in aquatic animals. Or better yet, order some online and have them delivered to your door. The two pet shops closest to my home don't even stock shrimp. But luckily I'm not far from Art of Aqua, and they have a huge variety of shrimp to choose from. I would highly recommend them if you're looking to expand. 🙂
Any chance you could run through the water testing kit you use and all the various water conditioning products you use? As always thanks for the awesome vid!
Hi Adrian! I use JBL's liquid test kits: pH, gH, kH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. For water conditioners I use Seachem Prime and I also add Seachem Stability after every water change. 🙂
Just found you, very nicely done.
Thank you very much for the feedback. I really appreciate it! 😊

Hi. Waar kan mens shrimps by jou bestel?
Thank you for your video -
When buying 1st group of shrimp to breed, how many do you reccomend to start with also should my supplier be able to provide 10females and 10 males or does this generally not happen (i asked a supplier and they responded they do not do selective breed sales)??
Also shouuld i purchase juvenille or adult shrimp to start with?
Thanks
I have a single 20 gallon tank, I’m getting at least 4 different colors of shrimp, could I counteract interbreeding with isolation boxes? Or is it ok to sell mixed shrimp?
It's okay to sell mixed shrimp if you specify to your clients that they are mixed. Otherwise you might get a bad reputation if people are under the impression that they're buying pure bloodlines. Mixed shrimp are also much cheaper than selling pure lines. But if you're fine with that, then it's not a problem.
You earned yourself a sub, great vid with useful info! I was looking at getting 4-6 blue bolts to start a colony in a 40L tank and I am wondering is there anything that they need to thrive? Like anything else to other caridinas?
Aaw thank you so much! I really appreciate it 😊 No, Blue Bolts don't need anything special to thrive. As long as your parameters are favourable to Caridinas and you do small water changes weekly or bi-weekly, they will thrive. With only 6 shrimp in the tank you can do water changes every 2-4 weeks. As soon as the colony gets bigger, you can do it slightly more often. Good luck!
do you think tap water will be fine?
@@BettaShrimps no you cannot keep Caridinas in tap water unfortunately. The general hardness of tap water is too much for them. You can keep them in remineralized RO water.
Thanks for the reply although I will do a test for everything if it is in their range will it be OK or is it better to invest in an RO system
@@BettaShrimps it's very risky to try tap water. You will most likely end up killing them all. It's much better investing in an RO system.
I was thinking of a 40 gallon breeder tank how many shrimp would you suggest putting in the tank?
I've had over 300 shrimp in a smaller tank, so you can easily add 250+ shrimp if you want. Just remember that you might run into issues with ammonia levels if your tank is heavily stocked with shrimp who will also be breeding, so you'll have to keep an eye on your parameters. My 55 gallon tank probably had around 1000 shrimp in there, but it was heavily planted.
@@ellies_exotics I was thinking of putting 40 crystal reds in the tank and planting the tank with moss and buce on Malaysian driftwood and moss ledges. Dose that sound like that might work?
@@Wulfenite295 I think it's going to be perfect. They'll love it!
Hi - this is one of the best vids I have seen. Just interested what are the cones you are using? Great channel.
Thank you so much, Jack! It means a lot to me 😊 what cones are you referring to? If you can give me a time in the video where I use them I can quickly check.
@@ellies_exotics The cone might have been from a Magnolia plant.
From 4:28 in your video, it reminds me of something produced from my parent's Magnolia tree.
@@johnthomas2743 you're right. It's a Magnolia cone 🙂
You have black beard algea in your bluedream tank on the pelia moss and bucephalandra.Reason of overfeeding :)
I used to have, yes. I luckily won that battle. Reason wasn't overfeeding but overfertilizing. I have since adjusted the amount I fertilize in those tanks.
What are your thoughts for using Fluval Stratum as a substrate for Neos and Caridinia?
It will work for Caridina. For Neocaridina you can use any substrate as they don't require a buffering substrate. If it's mainly because you want a planted tank, Fluval Stratum will work well. I've never used it myself but I've heard of others using it with success.
How about TDS? PH? GH? KH? Been hearing these terms…
You can check out my other video where I explain what GH, KH, TDS and PH are:

Hi, just subscribed. Where in SA are you and how can one purchase shrimp from you, I am in Cape Town.
Hi Derek. Thank you for subscribing! I really appreciate it!
I'm from Pretoria 🙂 unfortunately I don't ship livestock at this time and only allow local pick-ups. But if you're looking for a great place to get shrimp from I would definitely recommend Art of Aqua. Most of my shrimp are from them originally.

😍
what tanks do you use?
Those are custom 50L tanks 🙂
Hi Ellie, do you also sell shrimp?
Hi Dawie, I sell if I have an abundance of shrimp available. At the moment I only have lots of newly hatched Caridina that won't be available for a while. But unfortunately I don't ship livestock. Only available for collection in Pretoria.
How do we buy from you?
Where are you based?
