  • Good Morning, Reptilians! This week, we're talking about the things you need to buy in order to prepare for a new bearded dragon.
    Did I forgot to add food to the list? Yes. Yes I did. Your bearded dragon will need bugs (ex. dubia roaches, crickets, BSFL, waxworms, hornworms, silkworms, etc.) and veggies (ex. collard green, mustard greens, dandelion greens, turnip greens, squash, bell peppers, etc.) every day, and multiple times a day for babies. So make sure you're stocked up on food. You'll also need a container for the feeder bugs. I like to use sterilite bins for this.

    I just realized that I forgot to include food. You'll definitely need to feed your bearded dragon as well. 😅
    Example Bugs: dubia roaches, crickets, BSFL, waxworms, hornworms, silkworms
    Example Veggies: collard green, mustard greens, dandelion greens, turnip greens, squash, bell peppers
    You also need a place to put the bugs - I like to use sterlite bins. 😊

      Hey!!! After years of wanting a breaded dragon I am finally ready....enough!!!😁
      I do have other reptiles but breaded's have always been my favorite!
      But I have a question and I am hoping you can clarify it for me!!
      So, the basking spot: does this need to be a rock, wood, slate, could I make my own out of insulation, or a store bought platform?
      I have been watching like almost every video you have done about breaded dragons, then the other day I watched one you done about not letting you be the only place I get my info from and I was so glad that I heard that because I been watching all kinds and finally found the enclosure the other day I wanted!! Thank you so much for all the info and I love you reptile room!!☺

    Our Bearded Dragon is 2 years old now and she's very attached to her blankie. We have a set of 4 thick Terry cloths and we just swap them out every so often for cleaning. She's had a blankie in her enclosure since she was a baby and always sleeps on it. She'll even kick it down from her hammock and drag it into her cave with her.

      Fabric harbours bacteria, so it’s not recommended to have it in reptile enclosures. Also, I strongly recommend switching to a suitable loose substrate mix, burrowing enrichment is extremely important for bearded dragons. A deep layer of a soil/sand/clay mix is ideal.

It's like 4" long by 2" wide and you can run it along your beardo's nails literally once or twice and take those little razors down a bit. I get so much less scratched up when I handle her and she's still able to climb with no issues.

    Hi Elle! Just want to say that I love your videos on bearded dragons and I think your bearded dragon is beautiful. Mine is the same color, I read its called a Citrus. Mine is about 3 months old and I think he's a male. His name is Makaiah and he's not fond of being held, but I'm working on it. Today after his first meal of mealworms, he let me stroke him down his back 4 times without running away. I was amazed! Usually if my hand comes toward him without something edible and squirming in it, he runs away. Last night, he bearded up at me for the first time. My husband and I had to laugh, it was like a 2 yr old child saying, " I'm gonna get you!"
    Thank you, Elle, for your valuable teaching! You've given me more confidence in raising this little guy! Kay

    Oh a good suggestion I would think especially for people that live where it gets really cold in the winter and you can’t take them out side having a designated window where you have like a heat lamp I actually just set one up and it’s easy to take down so like it’s not always set up but I’ve been putting her Up there once a day and the first two days she sat there for three hours plus and then finally on the third day she was like “OK I wanna go do something else now” so I took her down before she could jump off lol … if I had a bigger house where it wasn’t literally the window right over my bed I would put stairs on the side so that she could go up and down whenever she wanted… because even though they do have the UVB lights it is still important that they get the natural sunlight

    Just so u know u r absolutely correct they can't see standing water however once u teach them something and they get it they will continue to do it I have 6 beardies and have had up to 43 at once and when I tell u everyone drank from a water bowl I legit mean everyone some didn't like it but wud do it but those were baby's they are. Little harder to train however all 6 of my dragons drink there water they usually run thru it the best thing is to put a container big enough for them to swim in they will go in and out of it and see the moving water and drink it so like the dog bowl get one from Walmart with the rubber bottom they will absolutely use it spray water into it to fill it and make them see u that is how I trained all of mine p.s I love u if it wasn't for u I wouldn't have had as much confidence as I did coming into this

    There are people saying half the tank length for uvb is all they need. But I found you first, so my light stretches almost the whole way. That is all I will ever do. Nature doesn't just go half way. If they need away from the light, that's what hides are for. I set a reminder on my calendar for light changing day. The only thing I don't have on you list is the uv tester and a second food dish. And that's because I tong feed her bugs. On the days I work that's the only attention I can give her, so we make a game out of it.

    Yeah I went from a timer switch to a smart outlet where I can control it from anywhere on my phone because sometimes during the winter it gets too cold and I need to turn on the ceramic bulb at night so that she doesn’t freeze… That being said my mom also has a bearded dragon it’s a family bearded dragon with my sister and brother and they do not have a timer even though I suggested they take the one I’m not using anymore because I upgraded and it’s just very frustrating to know that that bearded dragon is being neglected sometimes he gets like 20 hours of sunlight sometimes they forget to turn it off at all and they wonder why he’s crazy lol … I have always kind of thought that the tank that I use a small even though it’s the largest one you can get at the pet store and now that I know that people are suggesting 4 foot tanks I’m going to have to measure mine and see and maybe build one myself because I have no idea where to get a bigger one… also there bearded dragon Doesn’t have an actual hide they have one of those rope hammock things and because he hides under it all the time they say no it’s fine… He has nowhere to get away from the light I just thought I should mention that because like it just breaks my heart… If this was a child CPS would be called but people don’t care as much about animals as they do about other stuff

    I have various reptiles but I've always held back from beardies. I'm terrified of MBD and I've seen so many dragons with awful mbd from care mistakes. Maybe one day I'll get one.

      @ellesreptiles  2 роки тому

      That's understandable! It's very easy to prevent, though, as long as you have the correct lighting and dust their bugs with supplements 🥰

      If you are prepared to give them the proper lighting and supplements, please don't let this scare you. They are amazing animals. I'm pretty sure my girl was starting to have issues with mbd before I got her. Her jaw is slightly crooked and she has a toe that is twisted. Her supplements get stuck on her mouth and I have to keep it clean. But she has all the correct lighting now so I don't worry about it progressing.

    Thank you for this video. Very helpful. I got my 7y/o a beardie and all has been well, but today I noticed her shedding and she started waving her hand really fast. Wondering if i should be worried or do they flicker in this way to remove shed? 🤔

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  2 роки тому

      That sounds normal. They do all kind of weird movements when they're shedding, just because they're uncomfortable and trying to get the shed off 😊

    Amazing video! I recently got my bearded dragon around a week ago and was wondering if I should change my substrate I'm using rabbit pellets right now. He seems to be doing well but I wouldn't want it to cause problems in the future.

      By rabbit pellets do you mean the food? Like alfalfa pellets? If so, I definitely wouldn't use that. These can break down and cause mold if they get wet, whether from water or your beardie going to the bathroom. And if your beardie is using the bathroom on it, and they decide to try a pellet - they're now at a greater parasite risk.

      The brand I’m using right now is called Kaytee supreme rabbit food. It’s what the reptile place recommended when I got my bearded dragon.

      As long as you keep the tank cleaned out they don't. There are also several brand of bearded dragon safe soap now that can make them smell good 😊

    For my first time having a beardie is it ok to have a non front opening tank to start off with??

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 Рік тому

      You can, but it’s not ideal. You’ll need to move the lights every time you open the enclosure (which can get annoying) and it may make taming more difficult, since coming from above can make you seem like a predator.
