When did the web turn boring? In search of texture, color, and personality in digital spaces

This is something I've been thinking about lately... why are all the digital spaces so boring today? Yes they are sleek, reliable, and accessible. But why are they lacking so much personality? I've been building my website from scratch in an attempt to express myself with more creativity and control.
