    It's unlikely that Ganondorf was aware of Calamity Ganon, or at least that he wasn't seeing Hyrule through Calamity Ganon's eyes. My evidence? At the very beginning, he seemingly recognizes Zelda by her face (only logical since he knew Zelda in the ancient past and may have even conversed with her while he was still feigning allegiance to King Rauru), but he only seems to recognize Link by the fact that he carries the Master Sword. He knows that the name of the one who wields the Master Sword is named Link, but doesn't seem to know what he looks like until that moment.
    Surely, if Calamity Ganon was acting as Ganondorf's eyes and ears, he would've been able to recognize Link by his face, rather than just the fact that he carries the Master Sword.

    There is one addendum I'd like to make to this: even after Ganondorf breaks the seal, he never really seems to recover from it. Obviously for the majority of time he spends in Link's time, he looks really decayed and withered, but even during the final boss fight, where he rehydrates and turns hot again, there are hints (just one, really) that the seal may have some subtle, lingering effect on him yet. After you defeat his demon king form, he wails in agony and, seemingly inadvertently, returns to the pose Zelda and Link found him in beneath Hyrule castle, arched back and all. It only lasts for a moment before he snaps himself out of it and eats his secret stone, but he has to actively and arduously struggle against it, almost like it's some kind of reflex or muscle memory he's fighting. I doubt it's terribly meaningful in terms of lore, but it is an interesting observation and a fun tidbit.

    A hint of Ganondorf's Conciousness actually being transfered into Calamity Ganon is one Dialogue we get when confronting the Fake-Zelda in Hyrule Castle's Throne Room...
    She completely restored that place with every single detail, even the Floor with the Triforce-Mark on it which became fragile after Laser came out of the Cocoon and collapsed when the Manifested Body of the Calamity crashed right onto it.
    This Fake Zelda is a Puppet of Ganondorf, there is no possible way that Ganondorf somehow could extract her Memories of everything she saw.
    And the Scentence she said afterwards is also very interesting:
    "Does it awaken memories? Memories of our Time here?"
    It could technically be that Ganondorf is Assuming Link and Zelda spent some time in the Throne Room, but... what if he is actually referring to the Time when he actually was somehow inside of the Calamity?
    Even if this Line isnt Solid proof enough, the Illusion he created has to proof that he remembers the exact look.

    • @ExtraBurntToast
      @ExtraBurntToast 9 місяців тому +28

      Another way to look at it is that Gannondorf was just drawing from Link's memories to create the reconstruction. The only flaw in this idea, however, is that he makes the puppet look like past Zelda. He wouldn't do this if he was able to draw memories from other people.
      I'm of the opinion that Gannondorf had no idea that the calamities were occurring, but the fact he perfectly recreated that room does pose some interesting questions.

    • @spicysquire3521

      It could also be the way Ganondorfs illusion magic works could be that it taps into the observers memories to create a convincing illusion. The line about their time could also be a guess like you said, or could be an extension of that memory tapping idea.

      The thing is that, although Ganondorf refers to Phantom Ganon as his "puppet", there is evidence to suggest that it does have a mind of its own: it talks to characters, it acknowledges Link as a potential threat even though Ganondorf is dismissive of him, it sabotaging the various regions goes against Ganondorf's desire to win through overwhelming force, and Ganondorf didn't know until the throne room fight that Link was the one interfering with what Phantom Ganon was doing.
      I think the more likely answer is that Fake Zelda did its research while Ganondorf stayed underground.

    The sad part is that we can assume from the verbiage of Demise's curse that if his reincarnation is defeated by the ones bearing the blood of the goddess and the soul of the hero, that he will return again, making the cycle begin anew. This means that if Rauru succeeded in draining and purifying all of Ganondorf's magic he might have broken Demise's curse of hatred.

      @@braydenbanks4228 This may be what ended up happening in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity's timeline. In that split timeline, thanks to the butterfly effect created both by a tiny egg-shaped robot, and a shard of BOTW's Calamity Gannon, even though Age of Calamity's Calamity grew far stronger than the one in the original timeline, Hyrule was not defeated this time, but destroyed the monster 100 years ahead of time!
      This means that although the surface-level structures of the castle were damaged in the war, the deeper layers were not destroyed because the Calamity of that world did not have enough time to do so. Thus, Raru's seal was likely unaffected by the war, therefore allowing him to continue slowly draining away Ganondorf's strength and power, until the king of darkness gradually turns to dust and dies at the hands of the king of light.
      As such, no future games are likely to be set in the Age of Calamity timeline, because Demise's curse ends up broken save for a few tremendously weaker incarnations that will likely be easily defeated by a stronger Hyrule alone.

    • @CircusFoxxo
      @CircusFoxxo 3 дні тому +1

      Demise is Capital-D Dead after Skyward Sword, there is no "curse" and no reincarnation. He's sealed in the Master Sword and destroyed. The "verbiage of his curse" is that evil will always rise and fight against good. He says the conflict in general is eternal, not that he himself will return and that his personal beef with the spirits of Hylia and the Hero is eternal.

    That’s interesting that logically Rauru is still alive and whole in the Age of Calamity timeline. Also, the ‘purification unit’ all the way up to the castle and Sheika pillars were probably each installed after cycles of Calamities as well, each one trying to prevent future calamities.

    It is kind of ironic that king Rauru may have been on the verge of finally defeating the demon king thru his seal and time, but that due to the calamity seizing control of the shiekah tech and hyrule castle falling to ruin caused Rauru to finally succumb to decay and eventually losing to the demon king in the end. And Ganondorf seemingly had no control or awareness of the calamity that his gloom/malice had released at all. If this all eventually gets tied back to Demise's hatred/curse somehow, maybe it turns out that demise was incontrol of the calamity thru Ganondorf's sealed power causing the eventually release of Ganondorf, and therefore the incarnation of his hatred to be revived once more. Maybe Demise sensed that Rauru was winning and that could have broken Demise's curse, which was what prompted demise to act thru the calamity in the first place. Gives you alot to think about.

    When you think about it; the Age Of Calamity split of the story may have proven your point about Rauru being able to purify Ganondorf's darkness, if not win given that the Castle was still mostly intact unlike in Breath of the Wild where it was greatly damaged and decayed. Since in AOC the Calamity was defeated and Hyrule still stood united, preserved Rauru's hold on Ganondorf in where eventually he and his darkness would eventually be purified, ending the cycle.

Botw mentions the demon king attempting to reincarnate, and indeed it seems the calamity was trying in a very haphazard way to create a new vessel for ganondorfs soul to inhabit. Essentially create a loophole for him to escape the seal. Was he doing this consciously? Based on the boar imagery and bestial nature of the calamity, I see it more so as a manifestation of his subconscious or “dreaming mind” doing what it could in the state it was trapped in.

    I'm glad you made this video, I saw so many people on twitter go mad with this new interview "why didn't they mention this lore of the shrines in the game??", "Why didn't they mention the seal on Ganondorf was like a Shrine??". But the answer WAS in the game, and the similarities between the seal and the Shrines are apparent visually. I swear people want anything to be mad at this game because it didn't fulfill their crazy unfounded expectations

      It's pretty clear Rauru's seal is acting as an infinite Light of Blessing, constantly draining Gloom from Ganondorf, but the castle's role in the seal is pretty unclear. I think this is due to a bit of a translation error on the tablet in the Royal Hidden Passage. The English version makes it seem like the castle was built to block the entrance to the seal and prevent someone from going in and screwing with it, but I then went to read the French version and that basically says the castle was built to sustain the seal and give it a foundation, and that makes way more sense based on the lore stated in this video. That's the kind of thing I would've read and immediately had an epiphany on why the seal fell apart.

  • @chrispork1443
    @chrispork1443 9 місяців тому +3

    Makes me wonder about Age of Calamity. If the seal was disturbed by Calamity Ganon ravaging Hyrule Castle, and since Hyrule won in that timeline and rebuilt Hyrule Castle after the Calamity, does that mean either they stopped the seal on Ganondorf from breaking, or was it too late and the damage was done?

    • @speedude0164
      @speedude0164 9 місяців тому +1

      It feels weird to me that the castle being damaged would directly weaken Rauru's magic. My two theories are that tremors from the Great Calamity reached the Imprisoning Chamber and loosened his grip, or that Calamity Ganon's presence in the castle over 100 years decayed his body and weakened the seal. If the latter is true, then the seal definitely doesn't break. I however lean more towards the former, as there seemingly wasn't much Malice in the castle throughout most of the 100 years, and I'd imagine Rauru can survive that if he survived Ganon rushing out from Ganondorf's corpse all those times. If this theory is true, I'd wager the massive battle in the castle was enough to break the seal, but it wouldn't fail until Link and Zelda are the same age as Impa in the original timeline.

  • @bagofshhh

    So, since the shrines were seals made by Rauru and Sonya, how do the light roots factor in? We’re the shrines specifically chosen due to their proximity to the light root, or did the light root grow downward from the shrine? I’d assume the shrines came first, and the roots grew down after (since the sky island shrines don’t have a corresponding light root).
    Separately, what about the shrines that are just crystals disconnected from their supposed location? I wonder what happened there.

    • @ggholdengo
      @ggholdengo 9 місяців тому

      my theory is that the light roots were an unintentional product from the zonai shrines; resulting from their light energy channeling to the underground and forming these plant-like structures. People eventually discovered them while exploring the depths and used what's left of the zonai magic to activate them and provide luminescence to the underground, explaining why a lot of the mines were built near them. The mines on the sky islands (or wherever they're located before they rose into the sky) probably didn't have the same kind of connection, thus there are no light roots underneath. The best I could say for the crystal shrines is that the green shrine crystals were probably some sort of dormant mode for the shrines, this is either used for transportation or some other means.

    • @bagofshhh
      @bagofshhh 9 місяців тому

      @@ggholdengo Rght, so if the light root came after the shrines, which I think is feasible, it means they also came well after the Zonai would have established all of the underground mines and structures though. Because by the time Rauru and Sonia would have clearing out Hyrule, he and his sister would have been either the last, or one of the very few Zonai left, so well after the Zonai flourished. If I am remembering what the game said correctly, the sky islands weren’t even created until after Rauru’s death, because it was something that Zelda suggested Mineru and the sages do. So those sky island shrines would have been ground level when they were created, so it would probably reinforce the idea that the light roots grew down form the shrines.
      I think there is a lot more going on with the Zonai history than what has been letting on. Because for all the talk of them coming from the sky, it sure seems they actually came from underneath Hyrule. Because all of their ancient history is from below, and the sky islands didn’t seem to exist until after their demise. There wasn’t even a way to easily access the underworld until Ganondorf blew holes in the ground during his return. The only Zonai connected means of travel were those underground Zonai towers, but those only take you up, not down.

      Arguably you could call other major conflicts in the timeline "Imprisoning Wars" due to the similar circumstances surrounding an evil being been sealed away for hundreds of years: The sealing of Demise in Skyward Sword, the sealing of the "great darkness" in The Minish Cap, the sealing of Ganondorf underneath the Great Sea in The Wind Waker, the sealing of the Interlopers in Twilight Princess and the sealing of Malladus in Spirit Tracks. They all deal with a powerful demonic being been trapped inside a prison following a conflict of some kind so technically the term Imprisioning War can be used as a common Zelda word to refer to any past event where a demonic being was sealed prior to the events of a current game.

    We do know that this story happened in the ancient past. Then throught centuries enough Malices was escaping out of the body of Ganondorf to form the Calamity Ganon that forge the legend. Once it was sealed away, another one was emerging centuries after. I cannot avoid the fact that Ganondorf couln’t learn from his past tentative of malice’s incarnations, simply because when he was easy to defeat him with an army of gardians 10,000 years ago, when he came back, he used a new trick strategy to overcome them.
    Ganondorf dont know the identity of each heroes who were facing his calamity incarnation, because they were many and differents. But he know for sure that the one who will be standing with the legendary sword when he will awaken, will be Link.
    When we enter at the begenning of the game at the imprisonning chamber, we can notice that the ancients stairs were closed by a lot of doors. We can observe on the walls the prints and dammage caused by the malice coming out to form the new calamity for several ages. Its only during the last 100 years that we can assist about a great concentration of gloom coming out of the mummy because of the weakening seal. Before that, I am sure that there were not a lot coming out of him to be able to cumulate enough magic to create a new incarnation.

    It's interesting to me that Ganondrof's first action upon being released (aside from trash-talking Link for losing instantly) is to completely ignore Zelda and Link and instead focus on removing the castle above him.
    Obviously, this is to spread his influence over Hyrule, as we can see the gloom rising from the hole he made and flying off in every direction, presumably to become monsters like in the cutscene where he first turns into the Demon King. But, I also think it may be because of the seal -- and the 'purification stone'. Think about it, he just woke up, and he's incredibly weak. After figuring out that Link is no threat to him, he'd move on to eliminating the next biggest threat: the stone that kept him bound for millenia and the castle it is attached to.
    This isn't really a 'theory' so much as an interpretation of Ganondorf's actions, though. Anyways, this video was very cool! I like all of your videos.

A potencial DLC for ToTK could explain w 5 or 4 more cinematics about Link n Zelda expeditions, more about the distant past, more about sheikah tech whereabouts (most likely the devine beasts), more about the new/old sages. For the record the Purification unit does not actually physically connect to the castle. If it did it would be cutting through hallways in the castle and/or the Astral Observatory built by the Ancient Sheikah. Ergo there's no contradictions placing the memories before OOT in regards to the castle.
    Also Calamity Ganon is deliberately described as being OOT Ganondorf in both BOTW and TotK. BOTW states that Calamity Ganon once assumed a form known as the "Great Demon King" a title only used in OOT and TP to refer to the same person, OOT Ganondorf, if we say Calamity Ganon is sourced from TotK Ganondorf and is thus the hatred of the original Demon King Ganondorf beneath the Castle, than the logical assumption would be that OOT Ganondorf is a manifestation of Calamity Ganon and was in some way born from TotK Ganondorfs hatred.

    That is an incredibly amount of lore in that interview. And it is amazing how much of the lore has been predicted in theories.
    But how many years ago did Rauru live? It must have been more than 10000 years since 10000 years ago, the Sheikah fought Calamity Ganon and nothing was known about Ganondorf or Rauru. The battle 10000 years ago must have been a different one.

    Like always, a brilliant explanation, but I have some things to say. the fact that raurus body decayed recently is odd considering that the gloom had just started to reappear. If the gloom came around the times that Ganondorf was in full power then what is the malice? well considering that the malice is less deadly than the gloom only doing temporary damage the gloom might have been somewhat filtered/combined with raurus body creating a sort of weaker but more organic corruption, this could represent the death of rauru symbolizing his blood and flesh. But thats just a quick guess i made on the spot so there's probs some flaws
