Zane meets legendary music producer Rick Rubin, one of the most important musical figures of all time. Facilities courtesy of Amos Clarke & Eric Lynn Produced by Lee Edmenson
Some people have talent, others are hard workers. Both get to the goal and none is necessarily better than the other. Rick is both, which is what makes him special.
Zane Lowe is a great interviewer. He's not one of those read questions off of a paper interviewer. His interviews are always so organic, just good conversations.
It's a lot easier to be organic when you've got an hour of time. Usually, you have to get your buzz quotes, the standard questions, all of the boring stuff, and by the time you've done that, you've already eaten up 5 of your 10 allotted minutes.
@@monicaangelini3324 This guy is single-handedly responsible for ruining RHPC's Californiacation album, one of the objectively worst mastered albums of all time. It's one of my favorite albums by them but it sounds like dogshit with good headphones where you can hear the distortion because the guy utterly destroyed the dynamic range on all the tracks. He also had a hand in their later albums which also sound noticeably worse as a result. It's so bad that fans have had to circulate a leaked Pre-mastered version of the album which sounds a hundred times better.
Some of the best interviewing skills I've seen. I never knew Rick was basically Bob Ross mixed with Socrates and a wide eyed kid in a music store, he seems much cooler than I had previously thought, very much on the same wavelength with how I view the world.
I appreciate the fact that he knows the history and had read other interviews. I hate when they ask a guy like Rubin, “So, tell us how you got involved in music”.
Rick is that dude... I could listen to his stories all day. So much music history has passed through his ear canal. To use his favorite word... "Unbelievable"
I literally googled: "Rick Ruben interview" just to find out who this person that all my musical idols have credited over the decades. He Co-founded Def Jam? What?!? He gave up Def Jam because friendship meant more? What?!? Mind blowing interview!
This interview is incredible. Born in '75 I was raised around the beginnings of hip hop, break-dancing and everything in between. This interview is incredible because the "Master" is so laid back and just awesome at not only talking about music, but creativity, and life. Massive thumbs up and thank you so much for sharing this.
What a great interview of Rick Rubin, an absolutely brilliant man who before has never really talked about his endeavors publicly. I have to say that Zane does one of the best interviews I have ever seen.
BBC needs a new sound engineer. Having the sound coming from both sides is rather annoying for people using headphones. Both vocal tracks should've been panned to the center. Hit me up if you're hiring :P
Its nice, it means they have Sound Engineers who actually know what they're doing and want to create a a nice sonic experience, the EQs were also very nice, i really liked the sound.
yeah, I can imagine. but it's the internet. If you're uploading a video to youtube, you should consider that the percentage of people watching it through a laptop or other mobile device, is way bigger than the percentage of people watching on a surround sound system. On top of that, in a film like this you'd always keep things panned to the center, unless you're mixing "Gravity", or other exceptions that did benefit from this type of mix. It's not a matter of right or wrong, it's about providing a pleasant experience for every user.
Thank you Rick Rubin and Thank you Zane Lowe. Rick Rubin is like a peaceful guru. This is a interview about music and yet this is one of the most life inspirational interviews I have ever heard. I get an incredibly inspired and positive rejuvenation no matter how many times I watch this. I have watched this video in the 100's of times.
Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin two geniuses in one room. Johnny was special to our family as a friend and father of my sister’s best friend. He was a god believing, kind and generous man who many had signed off on. He deserved Rick Rubin to help him reinvigorate his music career. Thank you Zane for this fantastic interview.
Hey mate.. I you want to start something that's cool! I've got a jackpot ready for you.. and it\s general direction is aimed at your arse! So just shut your gob.. and no harm will come to ya! CAPICE!?
Well done! I'm very happy to see people taking the time to do interviews of this nature with people who were influential in the *early* hip hop era. Unfortunately, not everyone from that time is still around; but every little bit helps. This interview had a great vibe and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Rick's success as a producer must be tied to his humility in some way. With love from St. Louis -Meaga
just watching this conversation ....I have been a music head for over 20 years and have been a fan of RR and his catalog. it's amazing to hear the man talk about his experiences from Johnny cash to kanye. it's one of the best interviews I have ever witnessed.
There is so much of a connection between Psychology and Music Making that's insane. It fascinates me like crazy and Rick Rubin has an incredible innate grasp of this that sets him apart from everyone else and that has put him in this position to begin with. Fucking period.
This man, Rick Rubin, is aligned with the universe and completely in the moment. This is a big reason why he is able to help create great records. Great interview.
Living 30 minutes from where he's at id have to say That would be the pacific ocean and sunshine. The salt from the water does good things to the skin. The So Cal life.
wow i'm left with such a feeling of gratitude for Rick Rubin, his vibe, his approach, his life. he's given us so much! we're so lucky to be able to hear his music and the effect he's had on the lives and process of so much talent. he's a modern day siddha!
This man here is one of few people who are able to seamlesly make records in different genres and be great at it. Not many people can say the same and not every one understands. He is a true musical genius
Such a humble guy. Can you imagine the people he’s met and the music he’s been a part of. As a kid I remember seeing his name on so many records and wondering who he was and how he traversed so many genres. Rick, if you ever want someone to come and sit in the booth at one of your recordings. I’d happily put my hand up.
It was such a wonderful experience getting to watch this. Thank you and hopefully one day Ill be able to do some work with you and other wonderful artist. Thank you again Rick much love and blessings to you peace and love
I will never forget witnessing Rick Rubin onstage at the Last Rage Against the Machine concert at the LA Wrestling Arena. Banging his head on stage the whole set. He was producing the liver recording I guess. I love Rick Rubin.
What a fantastic interview with one of popular music's most influential producers. Zane Lowe once again gets underneath the surface of his subject. When someone who is an absolute master in their craft cares enough to raise the veil on process, it's a gift for the rest of us. Thank you, Rick!

Rick Rubin looks like he produced the ten commandments as well.

He’s a musical genius when it comes to finding talent and creating most people that are artistic are abstract

Probably the worst headphone experience ever
one of rick rubins primary tenets of mixing. hard left, hard right, or dead center.

I always knew of him didn't see any interviews but read about him in Anthony Keidis autobiography and then I was hooked
that interview is like a guided mediation. thank you very much.
Exactly like the Kendrick Lamar interview, beyond soothing to the ears
Long live the spirit of putting artistic integrity before business success.
and ironically it's paid off in the biggest way
I apperciate how confident the interviewer is makes it much eaiser on both ends
colton griffiths confident, though very humble. Check how he bows at both the handshakes.
He got better. He has ruined a lot of interviews earlier in his career
I appreciate the fact that he knows the history and had read other interviews. I hate when they ask a guy like Rubin, “So, tell us how you got involved in music”.
Fuck Zane Lowe. He's seems so much more interested in hearing his own voice even in the presence of a man who many consider to be a deity.
Surprising that radio people would mix sound so poorly.
indeed
too much panning
