    Harvey Haddix pitched a perfect game for 12 innings against the Braves who had the best offense in the major leagues at the time. The heart of the order for Milwaukee Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, and Joe Adcock had more than 1600 career home runs between them and they couldn't get a base runner for 12 innings despite the fact that the Braves bullpen was stealing signs. Haddix ultimately lost the game, but when you listen to what other players said about his performance that night to me that ranks as one of the single greatest pitched games ever.

      @@ottismymann It was the greatest game ever pitched. A 12 inning perfect game! In the 13th, Adcock hit a home run with two out and 2 on (by an error, then an intentional walk). But Aaron (on first base) thought the ball was caught, and ran off the field, causing Adcock to be called out when he passed up Aaron - 3 outs. The next day, the commissioner called Adcock's home run a ground rule double. This allowed the runner from second base to score and win the game.

    • @dgchristensen771
      @dgchristensen771 Рік тому +1

      The box score reads 12 2/3 because Adcock was the 2nd out. It went Matilla on by Hoak's error, Mathews sacrifices him to 2nd, they intentionally walk Aaron to set up the force and possible DP. Adcock homered, Aaron touched 2nd and left the field because Mantilla had scored. Adcock is called out for passing Aaron on the bases, somewhere between 2nd and 3rd.
      But think about that game, 4 times through the 1959 Braves lineup perfectly. Certainly more impressive than a lot of strkeouts while giving up hits and runs.
      BTW, the winning pitcher also threw a complete game, which reminds me of the 16 inning 1-0 game between Spahn and Marichal, that may also deserve this list.

    July 2, 1963: SF Giants 25 year old Juan Marichal vs Milwaukee Braves 42 year old Warren Spahn? Both started and finished this 16 inning game. Marichal threw 227 pitches while holding Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews hitless. The Braves scattered five hits but failed to score. Spahn threw 201 pitches and gave up hits to Mays (2), McCovey, Cepeda(2) and Bowman (2) but kept the Giants scoreless for 15 1/3. After retiring 16 in a row, with two outs in the 13th, Braves’ second baseman Frank Bolling singled off Marichal, but Bolling was left stranded Hank Aaron, who fouled out to first baseman Cepeda. Marichal was scheduled to bat third in the bottom of the 13th and Manager Alvin Dark considered pinch hitting for him, but when he asked the Dominican Dandy if he had enough, Marichal replied "If that old man is still pitching I'm not coming out!" The game ended when Willie Mays hit a walkoff homer to left with one out in the bottom of the sixteenth. Two tremendous individual performances and certainly the greatest pitching duel of all time.

Throwing a 10-inning shutout in Game 7 of the World Series qualifies as the most clutch pitching performance of all time, but in terms of how "great" he pitched, he allowed 9 baserunners and gave up a lot of hard hit balls that fortunately went right to his fielders.
