"you can get the fx3 for only 2k$ more" well it's the price of the fx30. This, and the price of full frame lenses.
In the right scenario it can be worth it. 👍
Right. That's why I'm going with the 30
Curious - would this be a good podcasting and travel compact camera? Could internal LUTs bypass grading needs to get similar looks to this ?

@@drew.schettler how do you upload this to UA-cam in 4k my settings are set to highest upload on UA-cam but it’s always in 480p
Thanks for the review Drew. I recently purchased an FX30 to use as an occasional B-cam and to have on hand as a back-up camera. But, I just shot three projects with the camera as the main camera and am truly blown away with its performance. I also used it on a multi-camera shoot -- as the lockdown wide -- and discovered that the FX30 accepts time code! Anyway, the small size has allowed me to put the camera in my carry-on luggage, easily switch between tripod and gimble, plus be inconspicuous while filming run-n-gun. Oh...and the auto follow focus is crazy good.
Thanks Charlie! Yeah, it’s a pretty sick camera for sure! 🤙🏽
Love my FX30- and the small form factor of the Super35 lenses makes shooting with it on the go so much easier! I find I rarely ever need an ISO above 2500- and pushing the FX30 to ISO 6400 when needed still provides a great image!
Same! Love mine too!
totally agree, i have used 6400 iso many times and my videos still good
Agreed
I love my FX30! I’ve played around with faster lens to compensate for low light situations and it works for my purposes. The affordable price allows me to buy more lens which is key. When I buy lenses I buy full frame so I can use it when I ever step up to full frame cameras.
Great idea! 🤙🏽
Can you use it as A cam, professionally?
This review makes me fall in-love more with my Fx-30!
There’s so much to love about it, especially for the price.
I own the fx30 and a7iii. I think that from what I've seen footage-wise there's not that much difference. Yes FF is better for low light and depth of field but I like the versatility of super35. for price, you can't go wrong with the FX30. If budget is no option then yes go for the fx3. I use it as a B cam.
Exactly my feelings! 🤙🏽
so you would go for fx30 over the A7iii? Looking for my first camera and mostly gonna do weddings but want to get into other client work as well and practice film making.
Yes sir, For video of course@@Offgridyurtliving
@@Offgridyurtlivinga7iii is only 8bits and many many years older in technology.
@@NARRASSAFilmes The fx30 is on its way 😁
just bought an FX30 on sale for $1598 from Adorama/Amazon and at that price this camera is a no-brainer.
I can’t believe they dropped the price again. Definitely a no brainer.
this video might make me buy an fx30. theres a slightly used one at a store near me and its marked down a little bit. great video!
Go for it! I recommend it!
for only 2000 dollars more, i dont know how he could say it so casually haha. Great video!
😁 thanks 🤙🏽
*Love My FX30 as I replaced my A6400 & ZV-1 for this. The fact that it's still APS-C I don't have to switch to an entirely new line up of lens. I can still use my trusty Sigma 16mm an my Sony 11mm My First Cine Lens the SLR Magic f2.8 And My Newest Lens the Kit Lens 16-50mm and Now I shoot at 59.95fps as shooting in true 60fps doesn't work on PPro but it looks AMAZING in 60 and I'm STILL lookin to get my First G lens, just have to figure out the equivalent Lens if there's G lens for APS-C cameras But I love it because it's more focused on Video which is what I personally Want and not a hybrid*
I thought Sony had a cooler color palette but everything I’ve seen with this camera is leaning heavily towards yellow/brown. very similar I ammo to the Panasonic color tones. Is that just the “in” look that people are using to color grade?
I think my scenario is the same as yours. I have the 6k Pro and that thing is TOO big to do run and fun/videography shoots with. I want something smaller with better IBIS and auto-focus. I love my Blackmagic, but this looks like the way to go. Plus I can’t afford the FX3 right now 😢😭
Yeah same! Go for it!
Hey awesome video! I really love how you color grade your clips, please make a tutorial video on how you color grade!
min 1:22 cuando te da para la cámara pero no para el parasol 🤣
Excellent footage! Gonna keep watching
The camera don't give you the ever so overly used "cinematic" look... your settings, experience, technique, exposure, editing, editing technique and lenses do. Aside from a tad more dynamic range of my A7Rii and it being a aps-c. It's a no brainer to pick this up. "For only $2,000 more"? bruh lol. Nah for me on that my guy. For LESS than that, I will end up with the Lumix S5iiX first. Now on this video... 1:40 looks bad ass bro! Love the look on that. Prime example right there lol
Thanks for the video! Looking into stepping up from my ZV-E10 🎉
Good choice! 🤙🏽
Same I just bought one after using the ZV-E10
Hi Drew, thanks for your advice. I would love to know if you have a course or a video where you explain how to achieve that cinematic look, that is, that soft and natural color. Do you achieve it from an in-camera or editing setup 🧑🏻💻? I have an fX3 and I record Slog3 + Gamut cinema.
Hi thank you for this video. Could you please tell us what lens you used for the b-roll you show at the beginning of the video?
It's the Sigma 18-50 f2.8
@@drew.schettler any thoughts on the sigma 18-35 art lens 1.8 for this camera? TY
Love the color of the footage, you get the full dynamic range of the camera, can you explain how do you achieve this? any video or tips about color grade the footage like this? Thank you, love the content
ND filter is a way to start!
It's fantastic. I have two as B and C cameras for my FX6.
With the FX6 and FX30 I get the best of both worlds and they match beautifully.
That’s awesome! Great cameras for sure.
That intro soundtrack had quite the Cristobal Tapia De Veer feel
🤙🏽👍🏽
What lenses did you use??
Was that Zeek’s dad at 1:17?
I like using Primes lens Manual focus that has F2.8 or less. What focal lenght would you suggest me? I like 28mm in Full frame version
That’s a great lens. I’d probably go with 35mm
Great B cam to my F55. Great work.
What codec did you use? 4k intra? Shots are fire!
This was shot in XAVC S 4K. Thanks man!
Do you guys know what is the crop form factor of FX30 When [SteadyShot] is set to [Active] ?
2.75x
Most people will be very happy with FX30 as it is 80% of fx3 at 50% of the price. Until you need to shoot in uncontrollable low light situation, you wish you have gotten FX3.
It’s definitely a perfect camera for most people
I always make sure to bring lights anywhere. If people do this is a perfect camera for them. But I understand some times people do not want to have to bring lights all time or if the shoot doesn’t need much light.
i can do slog3 6400 iso with fx30 and the footage is still good for all of my clients, it's 100% perfect for me for at least 2 yrs more
@@rohnjossright lol
I have the FX6 and FX30. In my experience, the FX6 really made a huge difference in extreme low light situations at parties and such. But this is rare. At ISO 2500 and an F1.8 lens, you pretty much get very clean exposure equivalent of what your eye can see.
The FX6 can achieve super-human low light performance. The FX30 can match human vision in low light.
Sometimes you don't want the depth of field of 1.8 though. So using my FX6 at ISO 12800 and F4 gives me about the human vision in low light.
Very nice video 👏 thanks
Speaking of practical, can we get a review on that torn off brown paper bag and masking tape as a sunshade? haha!
Haha 😂 yeah, that needs a whole video for just that 😂
Great video! What do you think of the new BMCC 6K FF? I am a solo film maker looking to get my first camera and I love the blackmagic image quality.
I think full frame is the way to go but there’s a lot of features missing from bmff that the bmpcc6k pro has that I would go with the pro over the full frame
@@drew.schettler Appreciate your thoughts!
What about Mic setup for interview? Ty
also what about pocket 4k as a interview camera compared to FX30?
DCI 4K used?
Beautiful video and great explanations.
Thanks so much for the straightforward, practical review. I've been considering the FX30 for a while now and I'm looking for a suitable gimbal. Which Ronin gimbal are you using @ 1:47 if you don't mind me asking?
DJI Ronin S. I believe it's discontinued, but for now gets the job done.
Thanks for your video! Your Opinion, as a filmmaker, is greatly appreciated!!! Cheers.
Thanks for watching! Cheers! 🤙🏽
Great video. Im getting this camera! 😄
I love it! Great camera! 💪🏼
Does the fx30 work with the rs4 gimbal & raveneye?
Hey Drew. I currently shoot for brands. Mostly personal branding, car delivery and car related shoots. Mostly video production. Past years working with my canon 200d m2 (india). it is doing good, but now i want to upgrade my gear. I need log formats, 4k 60 shootings and a better battery than my 200d xd. i dont think spending L on full frame like fx3 or a7s3 is good. I can do lot with my basic capabilities gear which helps me. I shoot at iso 400-1000 in night times. fx30 has 800 and 2500 native iso which is more than enough. Request u to address my queries. Also I want to know what more is fx30 capable of. My upcoming projects are documentary, more n more of personal brandings, and short films in the future. Thank you bro :)
Yea man the fx30 is a great camera that would fit the bill for what you're looking for. I've also heard great things about the Lumix S5IIX
which lens was used during 0.27 to 1.20 please?
Mostly the 18-50
@@drew.schettler sigma?

What lens do you recommend to go with the fx30 ?
The sigma f2.8 18-50
Wondering your thoughts on the Sony A6700. I’m looking for my first camera for videography mostly weddings but want to get into other client work and film making down the road. I shot 5 weddings with my iphone 11 and a gimble and now have been researching cameras for last 2 months every day. Right now the options I have for used in the surround area is Sony A7iii body for 1750$ CAD, Black magic pocket cinema camera 6k for 1800$ CAD and possibly a Sony A7c for around 1600$ CAD but I’m very drawn to the FX30 but the cheapest I found was an open box deal from best buy at 2450$ CAD taxes in. These are all body only. Of course these are all full frame except the fx30 and A6700 which I would also have to buy new.
a6700 is an okay camera. I’d say keep looking cause I believe the fx30 is now $1,500 usd and about $2,000 cad.
I use the bmpcc6k as my main camera and it's a mazing. You probably will need to rig it out more. THe full frame of the sony a7iii is a great option too. My rec would be either of those or even the a7iv. The fx30 will work but might get a better value out of the others.
what kind of luts did you used in this demovideo?
A rec709 conversion lut I picked up from Tropic Colour and then color graded after that.
Great video! i got FX30 with 18-50 but idk why footage are choppy a bit when i use 24 or 23fps. any recommendation ?
It may be a hardware or software issue. I’d call tech support cause I haven’t noticed that.
Why not the ZVE1 😁 I love it 😍 my new b-cam to my bigger Fx6 👍🏻 by the way very good video
Thanks my friend! 🤙🏽 I don’t have any experience with the ZVE1. Any good?
@@drew.schettler definitely a creator beast 💪🏻 not good for long time filming but for filmmaker perfect 😉 small size but big sensor
I think I am going to get this one.
I'm wondering if there would be any image quality benefit of getting the a7cii over this camera. They're both close in the price range. Does the fx30 have any image quality advantages? For example highlight roll off colors etc? thanks
That’s a good question. I don’t know the exact specs of the a7cii but given that the fx30 is part of the “cinema line” could indicate a spec bump.
I want a good entry cinema camera. Would you go with the full frame Sigma FP with 45mm kit lens for $1600, or the FX30 body for $1600? I know the Sigma is older but for the price of the FX30 body I can get a decent lens kit that normally costs $400 for basically free. Or do you think the FX30 is the better camera despite having a Super 35 sensor and being a bit more expensive? My use case is on a tripod recording objects in relatively low light in a controlled studio environment.
I don’t have any experience with the Sigma so it’s hard to say but I can full recommend the FX30. If you’re in a completely controlled environment then most cameras will be just fine since your “look” is mostly defined by how your shaping your light.
Question do you think the Sony f30 can match well with the pocket 6k meaning using both camera in a scene I’m working on a film looking for a second camera I have the pocket 6k I could get another but the F30 looks sweet
That's a good question! I own a 6k and I have used both of these cameras together on a shoot. They do match well, but not perfect. Since they have different sensors and a different color science they will differ but overall, great to use together.
@@drew.schettler thank you
Love the video and the BTS, nicely done! Question. Im shooting on a Canon R6. Mostly photography, but growing the video side of things a lot lately. I need a solid video camera/s with better dynamic range, video features etc. I'm pretty set on buying a blackmagic camera, then growing to 2 or 3. With your experience of BM cameras, would you say its eco solid system to invest and grow in to? (I have considered canon and sony cine cameras, but braw is pulling me toward BM (and the price!))
You honestly can’t go wrong with BM. The price point is solid and for that price it’s a fantastic camera, especially building out a multi cam operation in the future. With a solid OS combined with frequent updates and paired with Davinci Resolve 18, it’s a filmmakers pot of gold.
Having that said, Sony is great! That’s why I bought this cam. Until client budgets call for a RED or an Arri, BM is my preference.
@@drew.schettler Appreciate your opinion! Totally agree, 2 BM cameras have more use and value than one Canon or Sony for my current level and budget. Thanks again. Keep the great content coming, enjoying your videos :)
@@drew.schettler I needed to see/hear this! Thanks Matt for asking this question and thank Resonatefilm for responding.
Awesome review on the FX30. I’ve actually been thinking about getting the FX3 as you say, it’s for anyone thinking about a long term investment. To correct for exposure with the base ISO at 800 or 2500, do you ever adjust the shutter speed or Aperture? I suspect you would want to keep the 180 rule but just wondered if you ever deviate.
Unless there’s a “special effect” I’m looking to create with it, no! 180° rule is firm here.
This question is not for me, but I will say my VERY IMPORTANT opinion)
Personally, I'm not too worried about this rule when it comes to shutter angles shorter than 180. Yes, sometimes it's not so smooth, but most of the time it's not noticeable.
I mean, I try to keep to it, but for me it's more of a recommendation than a strong rule
But I never use longer shutter angles than 180 (270/360), because the motion blur effect shows up too much and it looks awful
@@Alexandr_Egorov_3003 If I shoot in 24fps using NTSC in Europe, if near artificial light sources, flicker is very noticeable and very annoying. I use anti-flicker on the Sony A7IV, which means I have to reduce the shutter to a lower number. I should probably just shoot in 25fps but as you're probably aware, there are many variables that come with shooting in Pal vs NTSC.
The clip at 00:33 seconds is actually shot at 1/100 for less motion blur.
Sorry, you've probably said in the review, or another comment, but what lens did you shoot the NYC stuff with?
Mainly the 18-50 Sigma lens. Great little budget lens. Also the sigma 24-70
How does the fz30 pair with the bmpk6k? How does the edit look on davinci resolve?
It honestly doesn’t look me that bad. Definitely a little extra time in the color grade to get it to match but I’ve been pleased with it.
FX30 or A6700 ? Which one you recommend
For video definitely the FX30
hello what do u use for take the sharpness on video ?
A lot of times I use Dehancer. For these shots, nothing was applied besides a simple color grade.
I meant u have sigma lens right ? and it is sharp lens but ur skin more softer but its not looking like mist filter cus of your back light I just wonder how did u make it with just color grading @@drew.schettler
If you turn down the Mid/detail in the hdr wheels in Resolve, you can get a nice look on the skin tones. Also helps if you key out the skin and then decrease the mid/detail@@thesinsinner01

On sale where?
Time code???
Haven’t used timecode with the fx30 yet.
if Sony made the sensor 12MP to improve the lowlight on the FX30...they would never sell another FX3...I thought about buying an FX3 but the only advantage I saw from all the reviews is the lowlight..even the dynamic range is non-existent...so I bought a pair of FX30 units..very happy...the upgrade from 8 bit is huge...
Some people just buy the ZV-E1 and slap an external fan to it, it's basically a budget FX3 at that point for like $1600 less since both use the same full frame 12mp sensor and can record in slog3. It's still a little more expensive than the FX30 but not by a whole lot.
I don't see anything special in the footage. I see amazing footage from panasonic, canon, fuji...I guess it's up to the user to pick the one that works best for them. FX30 is solid that's for sure!
Fair enough! The idea behind the review wasn’t to say “Wow! Look at this footage“ but to show that it’s a capable camera. Besides, there’s more to capturing footage than the sensor itself. Lenses play a huge role here.
@@drew.schettler Yes I agree. Great review btw.
